Perturbation spreading in many-particle systems: a random walk approach

The propagation of an initially localized perturbation via an interacting many-particle Hamiltonian dynamics is investigated. We argue that the propagation of the perturbation can be captured by the use of a continuous-time random walk where a single particle is traveling through an active, fluctuating medium. Employing two archetype ergodic many-particle systems, namely (i) a hard-point gas composed of two unequal masses and (ii) a Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain we demonstrate that the corresponding perturbation profiles coincide with the diffusion profiles of the single-particle Lévy walk approach. The parameters of the random walk can be related through elementary algebraic expressions to the physical parameters of the corresponding test many-body systems.

Oscillons: an encounter with dynamical chaos in 1953?

We present evidences that Ben F. Laposky (1914-2000) might have been the first person who created a family of nonlinear analog circuits that allowed him to observe chaotic attractors and other trademarks of nonlinear science as early as 1953.

Comment on "Coherent Ratchets in Driven Bose-Einstein Condensates"

C. E. Creffield and F. Sols (Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 200601 (2009)) recently reported finite, directed time-averaged ratchet current, for a noninteracting quantum particle in a periodic potential even when time-reversal symmetry holds. As we explain in this Comment, this result is incorrect, that is, time-reversal symmetry implies a vanishing current.

Levy distribution in many-particle quantum systems

Levy distribution, previously used to describe complex behavior of classical systems, is shown to characterize that of quantum many-body systems. Using two complimentary approaches, the canonical and grand-canonical formalisms, we discovered that the momentum profile of a Tonks-Girardeau gas, -- a one-dimensional gas of $N$ impenetrable (hard-core) bosons, harmonically confined on a lattice at finite temperatures, obeys Levy distribution. Finally, we extend our analysis to different confinement setups and demonstrate that the tunable Levy distribution properly reproduces momentum profiles in experimentally accessible regions. Our finding allows for calibration of complex many-body quantum states by using a unique scaling exponent.

ac-driven atomic quantum motor

We invent an ac-driven quantum motor consisting of two different, interacting ultracold atoms placed into a ring-shaped optical lattice and submerged in a pulsating magnetic field. While the first atom carries a current, the second one serves as a quantum starter. For fixed zero-momentum initial conditions the asymptotic carrier velocity converges to a unique non-zero value. We also demonstrate that this quantum motor performs work against a constant load.

Underdamped quantum ratchets

We investigate the quantum ratchet effect under the influence of weak dissipation which we treat within a Floquet-Markov master equation approach. A ratchet current emerges when all relevant symmetries are violated. Using time-reversal symmetric driving we predict a purely dissipation-induced quantum ratchet current. This directed quantum transport results from bath-induced superpositions of non-transporting Floquet states.

ac-driven Brownian motors: a Fokker-Planck treatment

We consider a primary model of ac-driven Brownian motors, i.e., a classical particle placed in a spatial-time periodic potential and coupled to a heat bath. The effects of fluctuations and dissipations are studied by a time-dependent Fokker-Planck equation. The approach allows us to map the original stochastic problem onto a system of ordinary linear algebraic equations. The solution of the system provides complete information about ratchet transport, avoiding such disadvantages of direct stochastic calculations as long transients and large statistical fluctuations. The Fokker-Planck approach to dynamical ratchets is instructive and opens the space for further generalizations.

Transporting cold atoms in optical lattices with ratchets: Symmetries and Mechanisms

The objective of this work is to provide a general introduction into the symmetry analysis of the rachet effect using a simple, non-interacting one-particle dynamics. Despite its simplicity, this model contains all the basic aspects of classical and quantum ratchet dynamics, and may be used also as a starting point of incorporating atom-atom interactions.

Vortex and translational currents due to broken time-space symmetries

We consider the classical dynamics of a particle in a $d=2,3$-dimensional space-periodic potential under the influence of time-periodic external fields with zero mean. We perform a general time-space symmetry analysis and identify conditions, when the particle will generate a nonzero averaged translational and vortex currents. We perform computational studies of the equations of motion and of corresponding Fokker-Planck equations, which confirm the symmetry predictions. We address the experimentally important issue of current control. Cold atoms in optical potentials and magnetic traps are among possible candidates to observe these findings experimentally.

Ratchet transport with subdiffusion

We introduce a model which incorporate the subdiffusive dynamics and the ratchet effect. Using a subordination ideology, we show that the resulting directed transport is sublinear, $ \simeq Jt^β$, $β< 1$. The proposed model may be relevant to a phenomenon of saltatory microbiological motility.

Quantum paraelectric behavior of pyrochlore PMN

Pb_1.83Mg_0.29Nb_1.71O_6.39 (PMN) crystallizing in a cubic pyrochlore structure exhibits, as the first dielectrics with pyrochlore structure, typical feature of quantum paraelectrics - its permittivity continuously increases on cooling and levels off below ~ 30K, without any signature of a structural phase transition. Broad-band dielectric spectra do not show any dielectric dispersion in the real part of permittivity up to 8.8 GHz. THz and infrared spectra reveal a soft polar optic mode which is responsible for the temperature dependence of the permittivity. The leveling-off of the permittivity at low temperatures obeys the Barrett formula and the fitted vibrational zero-point energy 1/(2*k_B*T_1) corresponds to the measured soft mode frequency. The number of observed infrared phonons exceeds that predicted from the factor-group analysis which indicates that the structure is at least locally non-cubic.

Periodically driven Quantum Ratchets: Symmetries and Resonances

We study the quantum version of a tilting and flashing Hamiltonian ratchets, consisting of a periodic potential and a time-periodic driving field. The system dynamics is governed by a Floquet evolution matrix bearing the symmetry of the corresponding Hamiltonian. The dc-current appears due to the desymmetrization of Floquet eigenstates, which become transporting when all the relevant symmetries are violated. Those eigenstates which mostly contribute to a directed transport reside in phase space regions corresponding to classical resonances. Quantum dynamics leads to the dependence of the average velocity on the initial phase of the ac-field. A resonant enhancement (or suppression) of the dc-current, due to avoided crossings between different Floquet states takes place upon tuning some control parameters. Our studies are predominantly aimed at experimental realizations of ac-driven quantum ratchets with cold atoms.

Energy diffusion in hard-point systems

We investigate the diffusive properties of energy fluctuations in a one-dimensional diatomic chain of hard-point particles interacting through a square--well potential. The evolution of initially localized infinitesimal and finite perturbations is numerically investigated for different density values. All cases belong to the same universality class which can be also interpreted as a Levy walk of the energy with scaling exponent 3/5. The zero-pressure limit is nevertheless exceptional in that normal diffusion is found in tangent space and yet anomalous diffusion with a different rate for perturbations of finite amplitude. The different behaviour of the two classes of perturbations is traced back to the "stable chaos" type of dynamics exhibited by this model. Finally, the effect of an additional internal degree of freedom is investigated, finding that it does not modify the overall scenario

Collective Current Rectification

We consider a network of coupled underdamped ac-driven dynamical units exposed to a heat bath. The topology of connections defines the absence/presence of certain spatial symmetries, which in turn cause nonzero/zero value of a mean dc-output. We discuss dynamical mechanisms of the rectification and identify dc-current reversals with synchronization/desynchronization transitions in the network dynamics.

Quasiperiodically driven ratchets for cold atoms

We investigate experimentally the route to quasiperiodicity in a driven ratchet for cold atoms, and examine the relationship between symmetries and transport while approaching the quasiperiodic limit. Depending on the specific form of driving, quasiperiodicity results in the complete suppression of transport, or into the restoration of the symmetries which hold for a periodic driving.

Quantum resonances and rectification of driven cold atoms in optical lattices

Classical Hamiltonian ratchets have been recently successfully realized using cold atoms in driven optical lattices. Here we study the current rectification of the motion of a quantum particle in a periodic potential exposed to an external ac field. The dc current appears due to the desymmetrization of Floquet eigenstates, which become transporting. Quantum dynamics enhances the dependence of the current on the initial phase of the driving field. By changing the laser field parameters which control the degree of space-time asymmetry, Floquet eigenstates are tuned through avoided crossings. These quantum resonances induce resonant changes of the resulting current. The width, strength and position of these quantum resonances are tunable using control parameters of the experimental realization with cold atoms.

Energy flow of moving dissipative topological solitons

We study the energy flow due to the motion of topological solitons in nonlinear extended systems in the presence of damping and driving. The total field momentum contribution to the energy flux, which reduces the soliton motion to that of a point particle, is insufficient. We identify an additional exchange energy flux channel mediated by the spatial and temporal inhomogeneity of the system state. In the well-known case of a DC external force the corresponding exchange current is shown to be small but non-zero. For the case of AC driving forces, which lead to a soliton ratchet, the exchange energy flux mediates the complete energy flow of the system. We also consider the case of combination of AC and DC external forces, as well as spatial discretization effects.
