Massive Gravity Acausality Redux

Massive gravity (mGR) is a 5(=2s+1) degree of freedom, finite range extension of GR. However, amongst other problems, it is plagued by superluminal propagation, first uncovered via a second order shock analysis. First order mGR shock structures have also been studied, but the existence of superluminal propagation in that context was left open. We present here a concordance of these methods, by an explicit (first order) characteristic matrix computation, which confirms mGR's superluminal propagation as well as acausality.

No consistent bimetric gravity?

We discuss the prospects for a consistent, nonlinear, partially massless (PM), gauge symmetry of bimetric gravity (BMG). Just as for single metric massive gravity, we show that consistency of BMG relies on it having a PM extension; we then argue that it cannot.

Stressless Schwarzschild

This self-contained pedagogical derivation of the Schwarzchild solution, in "3 + 1" formulation and conformal spatial gauge, (almost) avoids all affinity, curvature and index gymnastics.

Acausality of Massive Gravity

We show, by analyzing its characteristics, that the ghost-free, 5 degree of freedom, Wess--Zumino massive gravity model admits superluminal shock wave solutions and thus is acausal. Ironically, this pathology arises from the very constraint that removes the (sixth) Boulware-Deser ghost mode.

Nonlinear Partially Massless from Massive Gravity?

We show that consistent nonlinear Partially Massless models cannot be obtained starting from "f-g" massive gravity, with "f" the embedding de Sitter space. The obstruction, which is also the source of f-g acausality, is the very same fifth constraint that removes the notorious sixth ghost excitation. Here, however, it blocks extension of the mass to cosmological background tuned gauge invariance that took away the helicity zero mode at linear level. Separately, our methods allow us to almost complete the class of acausal f-g models.

PM = EM: Partially Massless Duality Invariance

In d=4 de Sitter space, novel conformally invariant photon-like theories consistently couple to charged matter. We show that these higher spin, maximal depth, partially massless systems enjoy a Maxwellian, "electric-magnetic" duality.

Canonical bifurcation in higher derivative, higher spin, theories

We present a non-perturbative canonical analysis of the D=3 quadratic-curvature, yet ghost-free, model to exemplify a novel, "constraint bifurcation", effect. Consequences include a jump in excitation count: a linearized level gauge variable is promoted to a dynamical one in the full theory. We illustrate these results with their concrete perturbative counterparts. They are of course mutually consistent, as are perturbative findings in related models. A geometrical interpretation in terms of propagating torsion reveals the model's relation to an (improved) version of Einstein-Weyl gravity at the linearized level. Finally, we list some necessary conditions for triggering the bifurcation phenomenon in general interacting gauge systems.

Symmetrically reduced Galileon equations and solutions

The maximally complicated arbitrary-dimensional "maximal" Galileon field equations simplify dramatically for symmetric configurations. Thus, spherical symmetry reduces the equations from the D- to the two-dimensional Monge-Ampere equation, axial symmetry to its cubic extension etc. We can then obtain explicit solutions, such as spherical or axial waves, and relate them to the (known) general, but highly implicit, lower-D solutions.

Partial Masslessness and Conformal Gravity

We use conformal, but ghostful, Weyl gravity to study its ghost-free, second derivative, partially massless (PM) spin 2 component in presence of Einstein gravity with positive cosmological constant. Specifically, we consider both gravitational- and self- interactions of PM via the fully non-linear factorization of conformal gravity's Bach tensor into Einstein times Schouten operators. We find that extending PM beyond linear order suffers from familiar higher-spin consistency obstructions: it propagates only in Einstein backgrounds, and the conformal gravity route generates only the usual safe, Noether, cubic order vertices.

Canonical Analysis and Stability of Lanczos-Lovelock Gravity

We perform a space-time analysis of the D>4 quadratic curvature Lanczos-Lovelock (LL) model, exhibiting its dependence on intrinsic/extrinsic curvatures, lapse and shifts. As expected from general covariance, the field equations include D constraints, of zeroth and first time derivative order. In the "linearized" - here necessarily cubic - limit, we give an explicit formulation in terms of the usual ADM metric decomposition, incidentally showing that time derivatives act only on its transverse-traceless spatial components. Unsurprisingly, pure LL has no Hamiltonian formulation, nor are even its - quadratic - weak field constraints easily soluble. Separately, we point out that the extended, more physical R+LL, model is stable - its energy is positive - due to its supersymmetric origin and ghost-freedom.

No Bel-Robinson Tensor for Quadratic Curvature Theories

We attempt to generalize the familiar covariantly conserved Bel-Robinson tensor B_{mnab} ~ R R of GR and its recent topologically massive third derivative order counterpart B ~ RDR, to quadratic curvature actions. Two very different models of current interest are examined: fourth order D=3 "new massive", and second order D>4 Lanczos-Lovelock, gravity. On dimensional grounds, the candidates here become B ~ DRDR+RRR. For the D=3 model, there indeed exist conserved B ~ dRdR in the linearized limit. However, despite a plethora of available cubic terms, B cannot be extended to the full theory. The D>4 models are not even linearizable about flat space, since their field equations are quadratic in curvature; they also have no viable B, a fact that persists even if one includes cosmological or Einstein terms to allow linearization about the resulting dS vacua. These results are an unexpected, if hardly unique, example of linearization instability.

No local Maxwell duality invariance

I show, in canonical formulation of flat space Maxwell theory, that its duality rotation invariance must have constant parameter, cannot be promoted to a local one by adding a compensating field, and that these conclusions hold in the curved space Maxwell-Einstein extension.

Critical Points of D-Dimensional Extended Gravities

We study the parameter space of D-dimensional cosmological Einstein gravity together with quadratic curvature terms. In D>4 there are in general two distinct (anti)-de Sitter vacua. We show that for appropriate choice of the parameters there exists a critical point for one of the vacua, for which there are only massless tensor, but neither massive tensor nor scalar, gravitons. At criticality, the linearized excitations have vanishing energy (as do black hole solutions). A further restriction of the parameters gives a one-parameter cosmological Einstein plus Weyl^2 model with a unique vacuum, whose Λis determined.

Is BTZ a separate superselection sector of CTMG?

We exhibit exact solutions of (positive) matter coupled to cosmological TMG; they necessarily evolve to conical singularity/negative mass, rather than physical black hole, BTZ. By providing evidence that the latter constitutes a separate, "superselection", sector not reachable from the physical one, they also provide justification for retaining TMG's original "wrong" G-sign to ensure excitation stability here as well.

Arbitrary p-form Galileons

We show that scalar, 0-form, Galileon actions --models whose field equations contain only second derivatives-- can be generalized to arbitrary even p-forms. More generally, they need not even depend on a single form, but may involve mixed p combinations, including equal p multiplets, where odd p-fields are also permitted: We construct, for given dimension D, general actions depending on scalars, vectors and higher p-form field strengths, whose field equations are of exactly second derivative order. We also discuss and illustrate their curved-space generalizations, especially the delicate non-minimal couplings required to maintain this order. Concrete examples of pure and mixed actions, field equations and their curved space extensions are presented.

Circular Symmetry in Topologically Massive Gravity

We re-derive, compactly, a TMG decoupling theorem: source-free TMG separates into its Einstein and Cotton sectors for spaces with a hypersurface-orthogonal Killing vector, here concretely for circular symmetry. We can then generalize it to include matter, which is necessarily null.
