Nonclassical States for Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with the Oscillator Spectrum

We show that the standard techniques that are utilized to study the classical like properties of the pure states for Hermitian systems can be adjusted to investigate the classicality of pure states for non-Hermitian systems. The method is applied to the states of complex-valued potentials that are generated by Darboux transformations and can model both non-PT-symmetric and PT-symmetric oscillators exhibiting real spectra.

Measurement of the integrated luminosity of the Phase 2 data of the Belle II experiment

From April to July 2018, a data sample at the peak energy of the $Υ(4S)$ resonance was collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. This is the first data sample of the Belle~II experiment. Using Bhabha and digamma events, we measure the integrated luminosity of the data sample to be ($496.3 \pm 0.3 \pm 3.0$)~pb$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This work provides a basis for future luminosity measurements at Belle~II.

Convolution based hybrid image processing technique for microscopic images of etch-pits in Nuclear Track Detectors

A novel image processing technique based on convolution is developed for analyzing the etch-pit images in Nuclear Track Detectors (NTDs). The outcomes of the application of the proposed method on the different types of NTDs (e.g., CR-39, PET) containing etch-pit openings of different sizes and shapes (circular and elliptical) is presented. Promising results have been obtained for both identifying and counting the etch-pits in NTDs.

A new bound on polymer quantization via an opto-mechanical setup

The existence of a minimal measurable length as a characteristic length in the Planck scale is one of the main features of quantum gravity and has been widely explored in the context. Various different deformations of spacetime have been employed successfully for the purpose. However, polymer quantization approach is a relatively new and dynamic field towards the quantum gravity phenomenology, which emerges from the symmetric sector of the loop quantum gravity. In this article, we extend the standard ideas of polymer quantization to find a new and tighter bound on the polymer deformation parameter. Our protocol relies on an opto-mechanical experimental setup that was originally proposed in Ref.\cite{ref:Igor} to explore some interesting phenomena by embedding the minimal length into the standard canonical commutation relation. We extend this scheme to probe the \emph{polymer length} deformed canonical commutation relation of the center of mass mode of a mechanical oscillator with a mass around the Planck scale. The method utilizes the novelty of exchanging the relevant mechanical information with a high intensity optical pulse inside an optical cavity. We also demonstrate that our proposal is within the reach of the current technologies and, thus, it could uncover a decent realization of quantum gravitational phenomena thorough a simple table-top experiment.

Study of radiation background at various high altitude locations in preparation for rare event search in cosmic rays

Various phenomenological models presented over the years have hinted at the possible presence of strangelets, which are nuggets of Strange Quark Matter (SQM), in cosmic rays. One way to search for such rare events is through the deployment of large area Nuclear Track Detector (NTD) arrays at high mountain altitudes. Before the deployment of any such array can begin, a detailed study of the radiation background is essential. Also a proper understanding of the response of detectors exposed to extreme weather conditions is necessary. With that aim, pilot studies were carried out at various high altitude locations in India such as Darjeeling (2200 m a.m.s.l), Ooty (2200 m a.m.s.l) and Hanle (4500 m a.m.s.l). Small arrays of CR-39 as well as high threshold Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) detectors were given open air exposures for periods ranging from three months to two years. The findings of such studies are reported in this paper.

Observation and analysis of Fano-like lineshapes in the Raman spectra of molecules adsorbed at metal interfaces

Surface enhanced Raman spectra from molecules (bipyridyl ethylene) adsorbed on gold dumbells are observed to become increasingly asymmetric (Fano-like) at higher incident light intensity. The electronic temperature (inferred from the anti-Stokes (AS) electronic Raman signal increases at the same time while no vibrational AS scattering is seen. These observations are analyzed by assuming that the molecule-metal coupling contains an intensity dependent contribution (resulting from light-induced charge transfer transitions as well as renormalization of the molecule metal tunneling barrier). We find that interference between vibrational and electronic inelastic scattering routes is possible in the presence of strong enough electron-vibrational coupling and can in principle lead to the observed Fano-like feature in the Raman scattering profile. However the best fit to the observed results, including the dependence on incident light intensity and the associated thermal response is obtained from a model that disregards this coupling and accounts for the structure of the continuous electronic component of the Raman scattering signal. The temperatures inferred from the Raman signal are argued to be only of qualitative value.

In situ XRD studies of the process dynamics during annealing in cold rolled copper

The dynamics of the release of stored energy during annealing along two different crystallographic planes i.e.{111} and {220} in deformed copper have been investigated using in-situ X-ray diffraction measurements at 458K and 473K respectively. The study has been carried out on 50% and 80% rolled Cu sheets. The microstructures of the rolled samples have been characterised using optical microscope and Electron Back Scattered Diffraction measurements. The microstructural parameters were evaluated using Scherrer equation and the modified Rietveld technique from X-ray diffractogram. The stored energy along different planes were determined using the modified Stibitz formula from the X-ray peak broadening and the bulk stored energy has been evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry. The process dynamics of recovery and recrystallization as observed through the release of stored energy has been modelled as a second order and first order process respectively.

Online interpretation of numeric sign language using 2-d skeletal model

Gesturing is one of the natural modes of human communication. Signs produced by gestures can have a basic meaning coupled with additional information that is layered over the basic meaning of the sign. Sign language is an important example of communicative gestures that are highly structured and well accepted across the world as a communication medium for deaf and dumb. In this paper, an online recognition scheme is proposed to interpret the standard numeric sign language comprising of 10 basic hand symbols. A web camera is used to capture the real time hand movements as input to the system. The basic meaning of the hand gesture is extracted from the input data frame by analysing the shape of the hand, considering its orientation, movement and location to be fixed. The input hand shape is processed to identify the palm structure, fingertips and their relative positions and the presence of the extended thumb. A 2-dimensional skeletal model is generated from the acquired shape information to represent and subsequently interpret the basic meaning of the hand gesture.

Calibration of a solid state nuclear track detector (SSNTD) with high detection threshold to search for rare events in cosmic rays

We have investigated a commercially available polymer for its suitability as a solid state nuclear track detector (SSNTD). We identified that polymer to be polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and found that it has a higher detection threshold compared to many other widely used SSNTDs which makes this detector particularly suitable for rare event search in cosmic rays as it eliminates the dominant low Z background. Systematic studies were carried out to determine its charge response which is essential before any new material can be used as an SSNTD. In this paper we describe the charge response of PET to 129Xe, 78Kr and 49Ti ions from the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN, present the calibration curve for PET and characterize it as a nuclear track detector.

Multi-pronged events from Coulomb fission of nuclei at very low energies

Multi-pronged tracks have been recorded in the polyethylene terephthalate (C$_{10}$H$_8$O$_4$)$_n$ solid state nuclear track detector by exposure to a $^{252}$Cf fission source. After chemical etching, two-prong to six-pronged tracks along with single tracks have been observed under the optical microscope. We carried out a systematic study to understand the origin of the prongs. The track detectors were coated with metals (Cu, Ag and Pb) and were exposed to $^{252}$Cf source. After chemical etching two-prong to four pronged tracks were observed in each plate. We believe that at this very low energy of the order of 1 MeV/A, Coulomb fission is the only plausible explanation for the origin of such multi-pronged tracks.

Shape Transition of Nanostructures created on Si(100) surfaces after MeV Implantation

We have studied the modification in the Surface morphology of the Si(100) surfaces after 1.5 MeV Sb implantation. Scanning Probe Microscopy has been utilized to investigate the ion implanted surfaces. We observe the formation of nano-sized defect features on the Si surfaces for various fluences. These nanostructures are elliptical in shape and inflate in sizefor higher fluences. Furthermore, these nanostructures undergo a shape transition from an elliptical shape to a circular-like at a high fluence. We will also discuss the modification in surface roughness as a function of Sb fluence.

Supersymmetric SO(10) with SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R X SU(4)_C Intermediate Gauge Symmetry

In recent analyses the existence of $SU(2)_L\times\SU(2)_R\times\SU(4)_C(g_{2L}\ne g_{2R})$ intermediate gauge symmetry has been ruled out in SUSY SO(10) model at one-loop level, although the left-right symmetric intermediate gauge group has been shown to exist with certain light scalar superfields near 1 TeV.We show, how the asymmetric gauge group is allowed with an intermediate scale $M_I=10^10- 10^13$ GeV by including two-loop and threshold effects.
