Double-exciton component of the cyclotron spin-flip mode in a quantum Hall ferromagnet

We report on the calculation of the cyclotron spin-flip excitation (CSFE) in a spin-polarized quantum Hall system at unit filling. This mode has a double-exciton component which contributes to the CSFE correlation energy but can not be found by means of a mean field approach. The result is compared with available experimental data.

Collective excitations in a magnetically doped quantized Hall ferromagnet

A theory of collective states in a magnetically quantized two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with half-filled Landau level (quantized Hall ferromagnet) in the presence of magnetic 3d impurities is developed. The spectrum of bound and delocalized spin-excitons as well as the renormalization of Zeeman splitting of the impurity 3d levels due to the indirect exchange interaction with the 2DEG are studied for the specific case of n-type GaAs doped with Mn where the Lande` g-factors of impurity and 2DEG have opposite signs. If the sign of the 2DEG g-factor is changed due to external influences, then impurity related transitions to new ground state phases, presenting various spin-flip and skyrmion-like textures, are possible. Conditions for existence of these phases are discussed. PACS: 73.43.Lp, 73.21.Fg, 72.15.Rn

Zero-Momentum Cyclotron Spin-Flip Mode in a Spin-Unpolarized Quantum Hall System

We report on a study of the zero-momentum cyclotron spin-flip excitation in the V=2 quantum Hall regime. Using the excitonic representation the excitation energy is calculated up to the second order Coulomb corrections. A considerable negative exchange shift relative to the cyclotron gap is established for cyclotron spin-flip excitations in the the spin-unpolarized electronic system. Under these conditions this type of states presents the {\it lowest-energy} excitations. For a fixed filling factor V=2 the energy shift is independent of the magnetic field which is in agreement with recent experimental observations.

Bound States in a Quantized Hall Ferromagnet

We report on a study of the quasielectron-quasihole and skyrmion-antiskyrmion bound states in the $ν=1$ quantum Hall regime. The short range attraction potential is assumed to be determined by a point magnetic impurity. The calculations are performed within the strong field approximation when the binding energy and the characteristic electron-electron interaction energy are smaller than the Landau level spacing. The Excitonic Representation technique is used in that case.

Goldstone-Mode Relaxation in a Quantized Hall Ferromagnet in the Presence of Smooth Random Potential

We discuss the spin relaxation of a strongly correlated two-dimensional (2D) electron gas (2DEG) in the quantized Hall regime when the filling factor is close to an odd-integer. As the initial state we consider a coherent deviation of the spin system from the ${\bf B}$ direction and investigate a break-down of this Goldstone-mode state due to the spin-orbit (SO) coupling and smooth disorder. The spin relaxation (SR) process is considered in terms of annihilation transitions in the system of spin excitons (magnons).

Spin Relaxation in a Quantized Hall Regime in Presence of a Disorder

We study the spin relaxation (SR) of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the quantized Hall regime and discuss the role of spatial inhomogeneity effects on the relaxation. The results are obtained for small filling factors ($ν\ll 1$) or when the filling factor is close to an integer. In either case SR times are essentially determined by a smooth random potential. For small $ν$ we predict a "magneto-confinement" resonance manifested in the enhancement of the SR rate when the Zeeman energy is close to the spacing of confinement sublevels in the low-energy wing of the disorder-broadened Landau level. In the resonant region the $B$-dependence of the SR time has a peculiar non-monotonic shape. If $ν\simeq 2n+1$, the SR is going non-exponentially. Under typical conditions the calculated SR times range from $10^{-8}$ to $10^{-6} $s.

Spin relaxation in a two-electron quantum dot

We discuss the rate of relaxation of the total spin in the two-electron droplet in the vicinity of the magnetic field driven singlet-triplet transition. The total spin relaxation is attributed to spin-orbit and electron-phonon interactions. The relaxation process is found to depend on the spin of ground and excited states. This asymmetry is used to explain puzzles in recent high source-drain transport experiments.

Activation Energy in a Quantum Hall Ferromagnet and Non-Hartree-Fock Skyrmions

The energy of Skyrmions is calculated with the help of a technique based on the excitonic representation: the basic set of one-exciton states is used for the perturbation-theory formalism instead of the basic set of one-particle states. We use the approach, at which a skyrmion-type excitation (at zero Lande factor) is considered as a smooth non-uniform rotation in the 3D spin space. The result within the framework of an excitonically diagonalized part of the Coulomb Hamiltonian can be obtained by any ratio $r_{\tiny C}=(e^2/ε{}l_B)/\hbar ω_c $ [where $e^2/ε{}l_B$ is the typical Coulomb energy (${}l_B$ being the magnetic length); $ω_c$ is the cyclotron frequency], and the Landau-level mixing is thereby taken into account. In parallel with this, the result is also found exactly, to second order in terms of the $r_{\tiny C}$ (if supposing $r_{\tiny C}$ to be small) with use of the total Hamiltonian. When extrapolated to the region $r_{\tiny C}\sim 1$, our calculations show that the skyrmion gap becomes substantially reduced in comparison with the Hartree-Fock calculations. This fact brings the theory essentially closer to the available experimental data.

Sound and Heat Absorption by a 2D Electron Gas in an Odd-Integer Quantized-Hall Regime

The absorption of bulk acoustic phonons in a two-dimensional (2D) GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure is studied (in the clean limit) where the 2D electron-gas (2DEG), being in an odd-integer quantum-Hall state, is in fact a spin dielectric. Of the two channels of phonon absorption associated with excitation of spin waves, one, which is due to the spin-orbit (SO) coupling of electrons, involves a change of the spin state of the system and the other does not. We show that the phonon-absorption rate corresponding to the former channel (in the paper designated as the second absorption channel) is finite at zero temperature ($T$), whereas that corresponding to the latter (designated as the first channel) vanishes for $T\to 0$. The long-wavelength limit, being the special case of the first absorption channel, corresponds to sound (bulk and surface) attenuation by the 2DEG. At the same time, the ballistic phonon propagation and heat absorption are determined by both channels. The 2DEG overheat and the attendant spin-state change are found under the conditions of permanent nonequilibrium phonon pumping.
