Four-fermion production at gamma gamma colliders: 2. Radiative corrections in double-pole approximation

The O(alpha) electroweak radiative corrections to gamma gamma --> WW --> 4f within the electroweak Standard Model are calculated in double-pole approximation (DPA). Virtual corrections are treated in DPA, leading to a classification into factorizable and non-factorizable contributions, and real-photonic corrections are based on complete lowest-order matrix elements for gamma gamma --> 4f + gamma. Soft and collinear singularities appearing in the virtual and real corrections are combined alternatively in two different ways, namely by using the dipole subtraction method or by applying phase-space slicing. The radiative corrections are implemented in a Monte Carlo generator called COFFERgammagamma, which optionally includes anomalous triple and quartic gauge-boson couplings in addition and performs a convolution over realistic spectra of the photon beams. A detailed survey of numerical results comprises O(alpha) corrections to integrated cross sections as well as to angular, energy, and invariant-mass distributions. Particular attention is paid to the issue of collinear-safety in the observables.

Electroweak Corrections to Four-Fermion Production in e+e- Annihilation

The recently completed calculation of the full electroweak O(alpha) corrections to the charged-current four-fermion production processes e+e- --> nu_tau tau+ mu- anti-nu_mu, u anti-d mu- anti-nu_mu, and u anti-d s anti-c is briefly reviewed. The calculation is performed using complex gauge-boson masses, supplemented by complex couplings to restore gauge invariance. The evaluation of the occurring one-loop tensor integrals, which include 5- and 6-point functions, requires new techniques. The effects of the complete O(alpha) corrections to the total cross section and to some differential cross sections of physical interest are discussed and compared to predictions based on the double-pole approximation, revealing that the latter approximation is not sufficient to fully exploit the potential of a future linear collider in an analysis of W-boson pairs at high energies.

A Precise Measurement of the Tau Lifetime

The tau lepton lifetime has been measured with the e+e- -> tau+tau- events collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP in the years 1991-1995. Three different methods have been exploited, using both one-prong and three-prong tau decay channels. Two measurements have been made using events in which both taus decay to a single charged particle. Combining these measurements gave tau_tau (1 prong) = 291.8 +/- 2.3 (stat) +/- 1.5 (sys) fs. A third measurement using taus which decayed to three charged particles yielded tau_tau (3 prong) = 288.6 +/- 2.4 (stat) +/- 1.3 (sys) fs. These were combined with previous DELPHI results to measure the tau lifetime, using the full LEP1 data sample, to be tau_tau = 290.9 +/- 1.4 (stat) +/- 1.0 (sys) fs.

Top quark pair + jet production at next-to-leading order: NLO QCD corrections to gg -> t tbar g

The reaction pp/pbar p -> t tbar jet+X is an important background process for Higgs boson searches in the mass range below 200 GeV. Apart from that it is also an ideal laboratory for precision measurements in the top quark sector. Both applications require a solid theoretical prediction, which can be achieved only through a full next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation. In this work we describe the NLO computation of the subprocess gg -> t tbar g.

Electroweak corrections to e+ e- -> f anti-f H

Some of the most interesting Higgs-production processes at future e+ e- colliders are of the type e+ e- -> f anti-f H. We present a calculation of the complete O(alpha) corrections to these processes in the Standard Model for final-state neutrinos and top quarks. Initial-state radiation beyond O(alpha) at the leading-logarithmic level as well as QCD corrections are also included. The electroweak corrections turn out to be sizable and reach the order of +/-10% and will thus be an important part of precise theoretical predictions for future e+ e- colliders.

The Higgs Working Group: Summary Report 2003

Theoretical progress in Higgs boson production and background processes is discussed with particular emphasis on QCD corrections at and beyond next-to-leading order as well as next-to-leading order electroweak corrections. The residual theoretical uncertainties of the investigated processes are estimated in detail. Moreover, recent investigations of the MSSM Higgs sector and other extensions of the SM Higgs sector are presented. The potential of the LHC and a high-energy linear e+e- collider for the measurement of Higgs couplings is analyzed.

Higgs Boson Production in Association with Bottom Quarks

In the Standard Model, the coupling of the Higgs boson to b quarks is weak, leading to small cross sections for producing a Higgs boson in association with b quarks. However, Higgs bosons with enhanced couplings to b quarks, such as occur in supersymmetric models for large values of tan beta, will be copiously produced at both the Tevatron and the LHC in association with b quarks, which will be an important discovery channel. We investigate the connections between the production channels, bg -> bh and gg ->b bbar h, at next-to-leading order (NLO) in perturbative QCD and present results for the cases with two high p_T b jets and with one high p_T b jet at both the Tevatron the the LHC. Finally, the total cross sections without cuts are compared between gg -> b bbar h at NLO and b bbar ->h at NNLO.

Precision Calculations for Associated WH and ZH Production at Hadron Colliders

Recently the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections and the electroweak O(alpha) corrections to the Higgs-strahlung processes ppbar/pp -> WH/ZH + X have been calculated. Both types of corrections are of the order of 5-10%. In this article the various corrections are briefly discussed and combined into state-of-the-art predictions for the cross sections. The theoretical uncertainties from renormalization/factorization scales and from the parton distribution functions are discussed.

Electroweak radiative corrections to deep-inelastic neutrino scattering - implications for NuTeV ?

We calculate the O(alpha) electroweak corrections to charged- and neutral-current deep-inelastic neutrino scattering off an isoscalar target. The full one-loop-corrected cross sections, including hard photonic corrections, are evaluated and compared to an earlier result which was used in the NuTeV analysis. In particular, we compare results that differ in input-parameter scheme, treatment of real photon radiation and factorization scheme. The associated shifts in the theoretical prediction for the ratio of neutral- and charged-current cross sections can be larger than the experimental accuracy of the NuTeV result.

Electroweak corrections to e+ e- -> nu anti-nu H and e+ e- -> t anti-t H

The most interesting Higgs-production processes at future e+ e- colliders belong to the process class e+ e- -> f anti-f H. We study the full O(alpha) corrections to this reaction in the Standard Model for neutrinos and top quarks in the final state. Leading higher-order corrections from initial-state radiation and QCD corrections are also taken into account. Although cancellations between the different kinds of corrections occur, the full corrections are of the order of +/-10% and thus important ingredients in the theoretical predictions for future e+ e- colliders.

Radiative corrections to Higgs-boson production in association with top-quark pairs at e+ e- colliders

We have calculated the complete O(alpha) and O(alpha_s) radiative corrections to the Higgs-production process e+ e- -> t anti-t H in the Standard Model. This process is particularly interesting for the measurement of the top-quark Yukawa coupling at a future e+ e- collider. The calculation of the O(alpha) corrections is described in some detail including, in particular, the treatment of the soft and collinear singularities. The discussion of numerical results focuses on the total cross section as well as on angular and energy distributions of the outgoing particles. The electroweak corrections turn out to be sizable and can reach the order of +/-10%. They result from cancellations between electromagnetic, fermionic, and weak bosonic corrections, each of which are of the order of +/-10%.

Electroweak radiative corrections to e+ e- -> t anti-t H

We have calculated the complete electroweak O(alpha) radiative corrections to the Higgs-boson production process e+ e- -> t anti-t H in the electroweak Standard Model. Initial-state radiation beyond O(alpha) is included in the structure-function approach. The calculation of the corrections is briefly described, and numerical results are presented for the total cross section. Both the photonic and the genuine weak corrections reach the order of about 10% or even more and show a non-trivial dependence on the Higgs-boson mass and on the scattering energy. We compare our results with two previous calculations that obtained differing results at high energies.

Electroweak Radiative Corrections to Associated WH and ZH Production at Hadron Colliders

Higgs-boson production in association with W or Z bosons, p pbar -> WH/ZH + X, is the most promising discovery channel for a light Standard Model Higgs particle at the Fermilab Tevatron. We present the calculation of the electroweak O(alpha) corrections to these processes. The corrections decrease the theoretical prediction by up to 5-10%, depending in detail on the Higgs-boson mass and the input-parameter scheme. We update the cross-section prediction for associated WH and ZH production at the Tevatron and at the LHC, including the next-to-leading order electroweak and QCD corrections, and study the theoretical uncertainties induced by factorization and renormalization scale dependences and by the parton distribution functions.

Electroweak radiative corrections to single Higgs-boson production in e+e- annihilation

We have calculated the complete electroweak O(alpha) radiative corrections to the single Higgs-boson production processes e+ e- --> nu_l anti-nu_l H (l=e,mu,tau) in the electroweak Standard Model. Initial-state radiation beyond O(alpha) is included in the structure-function approach. The calculation of the corrections is briefly described, and numerical results are presented for the total cross section. In the G_mu scheme, the bulk of the corrections is due to initial-state radiation, which affects the cross section at the level of -7% at high energies and even more in the ZH threshold region. The remaining bosonic and fermionic corrections are at the level of a few per cent. The confusing situation in the literature regarding differing results for the fermionic corrections to this process is clarified.

Electroweak radiative corrections to e+ e- -> nu nubar H

The complete electroweak O(alpha) radiative corrections to the Higgs-boson production processes e+ e- -> nu_l anti-nu_l H (l=e,mu,tau) are calculated in the electroweak Standard Model. For e+ e- -> nu_e anti-nu_e H, where ZH production and W-boson fusion contribute, both production channels are added coherently. The calculation of the corrections is described in some detail including, in particular, the treatment of the Z-boson resonance in the ZH-production channel. The discussion of numerical results focusses on the total cross section as well as on angular and energy distributions of the Higgs boson. In the Gmu-scheme, the bulk of the corrections is due to initial-state radiation. The corrections turn out to reduce the total cross section by \sim 10% for high energies, where the W-boson fusion dominates. In this region, the corrections depend only weakly on the energy and the production angle of the Higgs boson. Based on an analysis of the leading universal corrections, a simple improved Born approximation is introduced. This approximation describes the corrected cross section within about 3%.

Reduction of one-loop tensor 5-point integrals

A new method for the reduction of one-loop tensor 5-point integrals to related 4-point integrals is proposed. In contrast to the usual Passarino-Veltman reduction and other methods used in the literature, this reduction avoids the occurrence of inverse Gram determinants, which potentially cause severe numerical instabilities in practical calculations. Explicit results for the 5-point tensor coefficients are presented up to rank 4. The expressions for the reduction of the relevant 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-point tensor coefficients to scalar integrals are also included; apart from these standard integrals no other integrals are needed.

NLO QCD corrections to t anti-t H production in hadron collisions

The Higgs boson H of the Standard Model can be searched for in the channels p pbar / pp -> t tbar H + X at the Tevatron and the LHC. The cross sections for these processes and the final-state distributions of the Higgs boson and top quarks are presented at next-to-leading order QCD. To calculate these QCD corrections, a special calculational technique for pentagon diagrams has been developed and the dipole subtraction formalism has been adopted for massive particles. The impact of the corrections on the total cross sections is characterized by K factors, the ratios of the cross sections in next-to-leading order over leading order QCD. At the central scale mu_0 = (2 m_t + M_H)/2 the K factors are found to be slightly below unity for the Tevatron (K \sim 0.8) and slightly above unity for the LHC (K \sim 1.2). Including the corrections significantly stabilizes the theoretical predictions for total cross sections and for the distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum of the Higgs boson and top quarks.
