The QCD transition temperature: results with physical masses in the continuum limit II.

We extend our previous study [Phys. Lett. B643 (2006) 46] of the cross-over temperatures (T_c) of QCD. We improve our zero temperature analysis by using physical quark masses and finer lattices. In addition to the kaon decay constant used for scale setting we determine four quantities (masses of the Ωbaryon, K^*(892) and ϕ(1020) mesons and the pion decay constant) which are found to agree with experiment. This implies that --independently of which of these quantities is used to set the overall scale-- the same results are obtained within a few percent. At finite temperature we use finer lattices down to a <= 0.1 fm (N_t=12 and N_t=16 at one point). Our new results confirm completely our previous findings. We compare the results with those of the 'hotQCD' collaboration.

Scaling study of dynamical smeared-link clover fermions

We present a framework for phenomenological lattice QCD calculations which makes use of a tree level Symanzink improved action for gluons and stout-link Wilson fermions. We give details of our efficient HMC/RHMC algorithm and present a scaling study of the low-lying N_f=3 baryon spectrum. We find a scaling region that extends to a~<0.16fm and conclude that our action and algorithm are suitable for large scale phenomenological investigations of N_f=2+1 QCD. We expect this conclusion to hold for other comparable actions.

B, D and K decays

With the advent of the LHC, we will be able to probe New Physics (NP) up to energy scales almost one order of magnitude larger than it has been possible with present accelerator facilities. While direct detection of new particles will be the main avenue to establish the presence of NP at the LHC, indirect searches will provide precious complementary information, since most probably it will not be possible to measure the full spectrum of new particles and their couplings through direct production. In particular, precision measurements and computations in the realm of flavour physics are expected to play a key role in constraining the unknown parameters of the Lagrangian of any NP model emerging from direct searches at the LHC. The aim of Working Group 2 was twofold: on one hand, to provide a coherent, up-to-date picture of the status of flavour physics before the start of the LHC; on the other hand, to initiate activities on the path towards integrating information on NP from high-pT and flavour data.

Chiral behavior of pseudo-Goldstone boson masses and decay constants in 2+1 flavor QCD

We present preliminary results for the chiral behavior of charged pseudo-Goldstone-boson masses and decay constants. These are obtained in simulations with N_f=2+1 flavors of tree-level, O(a)-improved Wilson sea quarks. In these simulations, mesons are composed of either valence quarks discretized in the same way as the sea quarks (unitary simulations) or of overlap valence quarks (mixed-action simulations). We find that the chiral behavior of the pseudoscalar meson masses in the mixed-action calculations cannot be explained with continuum, partially-quenched chiral perturbation theory. We show that the inclusion of O(a^2) unitarity violations in the chiral expansion resolves this discrepancy and that the size of the unitarity violations required are consistent with those which we observe in the zero-momentum, scalar-isotriplet-meson propagator.

Lattice HQET with exponentially improved statistical precision

We introduce an alternative discretization for static quarks on the lattice retaining the O(a) improvement properties of the Eichten-Hill action. In this formulation, statistical fluctuations are reduced by a factor which grows exponentially with Euclidean time, x_0. For the first time, B-meson correlation functions are computed with good statistical precision in the static approximation for x_0>1 fm. At lattice spacings a \approx 0.1 fm, a \approx 0.08 fm and a \approx 0.07 fm the B_s-meson decay constant is determined in static and quenched approximations. A correction due to the finite mass of the b-quark is estimated by combining these static results with a recent determination of F_Ds.

Towards a precision computation of f_Bs in quenched QCD

We present a computation of the decay constant f_Bs in quenched QCD. Our strategy is to combine new precise data from the static approximation with an interpolation of the decay constant around the charm quark mass region. This computation is the first step in demonstrating the feasability of a strategy for f_B in full QCD. The continuum limits in the static theory and at finite mass are taken separately and will be further improved.

Static quarks with improved statistical precision

We present a numerical study for different discretisations of the static action, concerning cut-off effects and the growth of statistical errors with Euclidean time. An error reduction by an order of magnitude can be obtained with respect to the Eichten-Hill action, for time separations beyond 1.3 fm, keeping discretization errors small. The best actions lead to a big improvement on the precision of the quark mass Mb and F_Bs in the static approximation.
