The backward problem for time fractional evolution equations

In this paper, we consider the backward problem for fractional in time evolution equations $\partial_t^αu(t)= A u(t)$ with the Caputo derivative of order $0<α\le 1$, where $A$ is a self-adjoint and bounded above operator on a Hilbert space $H$. First, we extend the logarithmic convexity technique to the fractional framework by analyzing the properties of the Mittag-Leffler functions. Then we prove conditional stability estimates of Hölder type for initial conditions under a weaker norm of the final data. Finally, we give several applications to show the applicability of our abstract results.

Numerical identification of initial temperatures in heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions

We investigate the inverse problem of numerically identifying unknown initial temperatures in a heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions whenever some overdetermination data is provided after a final time. This is a backward parabolic problem which is severely ill-posed. As a first step, the problem is reformulated as an optimization problem with an associated cost functional. Using the weak solution approach, an explicit formula for the Fréchet gradient of the cost functional is derived from the corresponding sensitivity and adjoint problems. Then the Lipschitz continuity of the gradient is proved. Next, further spectral properties of the input-output operator are established. Finally, the numerical results for noisy measured data are performed using the regularization framework and the conjugate gradient method. We consider both one- and two-dimensional numerical experiments using finite difference discretization to illustrate the efficiency of the designed algorithm. Aside from dealing with a time derivative on the boundary, the presence of a boundary diffusion makes the analysis more complicated. This issue is handled in the 2-D case by considering the polar coordinate system. The presented method implies fast numerical results.

Stable determination of coefficients in semilinear parabolic system with dynamic boundary conditions

In this work, we study the stable determination of four space-dependent coefficients appearing in a coupled semilinear parabolic system with variable diffusion matrices subject to dynamic boundary conditions which couple intern-boundary phenomena. We prove a Lipschitz stability result for interior and boundary potentials by means of only one observation component, localized in any arbitrary open subset of the physical domain. The proof mainly relies on some new Carleman estimates for dynamic boundary conditions of surface diffusion type.

Boundary null controllability for the heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions

In this paper, we are concerned with the boundary controllability of heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions. More precisely, we prove that the equation is null controllable at any positive time by means of a boundary control supported on an arbitrary subboundary. The proof of the main result combines a new boundary Carleman estimate and some regularity estimates for the adjoint system, with an explicit dependence with respect to the final time. This technique allows us to overcome a new difficulty that arises when absorbing a normal derivative term.

Logarithmic convexity and impulsive controllability for the 1-D heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions

In this paper, we prove a logarithmic convexity that reflects an observability estimate at a single point of time for 1-D heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions. Consequently, we establish the impulse approximate controllability for the impulsive heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions. Moreover, we obtain an explicit upper bound of the cost of impulse control. At the end, we give a constructive algorithm for computing the impulsive control of minimal $L^2$-norm. We also present some numerical tests to validate the theoretical results and show the efficiency of the designed algorithm.

Inverse problems for general parabolic systems and application to Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equation

We investigate the link between inverse problems and final state observability for a general class of parabolic systems. We generalize a stability result for initial data due to García and Takahashi [16], known for the case of self-adjoint dissipative operators. More precisely, we consider a system governed by an analytic semigroup. Under the assumption of final state observability, we prove a logarithmic stability estimate depending on the analyticity angle of the semigroup. This is done by using a general logarithmic convexity result. The abstract result is illustrated by considering the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equation.

Identification of source terms in wave equation with dynamic boundary conditions

This paper studies an inverse hyperbolic problem for the wave equation with dynamic boundary conditions. It consists of determining some forcing terms from the final overdetermination of the displacement. First, the Fréchet differentiability of the Tikhonov functional is studied, and a gradient formula is obtained via the solution of an associated adjoint problem. Then, the Lipschitz continuity of the gradient is proved. Furthermore, the existence and the uniqueness for the minimization problem are discussed. Finally, some numerical experiments for the reconstruction of an internal wave force are implemented via a conjugate gradient algorithm.

Identification of source terms in heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions

We study an inverse parabolic problem of identifying two source terms in heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions from a final time overdetermination data. Using a weak solution approach by Hasanov, the associated cost functional is analyzed, especially a gradient formula of the functional is proved and given in terms of the solution of an adjoint problem. Next, the existence and uniqueness of a quasi-solution are also investigated. Finally, the numerical reconstruction of some heat sources in a 1-D equation is presented to show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

An inverse problem of radiative potentials and initial temperatures in parabolic equations with dynamic boundary conditions

We study an inverse problem involving the restoration of two radiative potentials, not necessarily smooth, simultaneously with initial temperatures in parabolic equations with dynamic boundary conditions. We prove a Lipschitz stability estimate for the relevant potentials using a recent Carleman estimate, and a logarithmic stability result for the initial temperatures by a logarithmic convexity method, based on observations in an arbitrary subdomain.

The cost of approximate controllability of heat equation with dynamical boundary conditions

We consider the heat equation with dynamic bounary conditions involving gradient terms in a bounded domain. In this paper we study the cost of approximate controllability for this equation. Combining new developed Carleman estimates and some optimization techniques, we obtain explicit bounds of the minimal norm control. We consider the linear and the semilinear cases.

Lipschitz stability for an inverse source problem in anisotropic parabolic equations with dynamic boundary conditions

In this paper, we study an inverse problem for linear parabolic system with variable diffusion coefficients subject to dynamic boundary conditions. We prove a global Lipschitz stability for the inverse problem involving a simultaneous recovery of two source terms from a single measurement and interior observations, based on a recent Carleman estimate for such problems.
