POEMMA: Probe Of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics

The Probe Of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (POEMMA) mission is being designed to establish charged-particle astronomy with ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and to observe cosmogenic tau neutrinos (CTNs). The study of UHECRs and CTNs from space will yield orders-of-magnitude increase in statistics of observed UHECRs at the highest energies, and the observation of the cosmogenic flux of neutrinos for a range of UHECR models. These observations should solve the long-standing puzzle of the origin of the highest energy particles ever observed, providing a new window onto the most energetic environments and events in the Universe, while studying particle interactions well beyond accelerator energies. The discovery of CTNs will help solve the puzzle of the origin of UHECRs and begin a new field of Astroparticle Physics with the study of neutrino properties at ultra-high energies.

Ground Truth calibration for the JEM-EUSO Mission

The Extreme Universe Space Observatory is an experiment to investigate the highest energy cosmic rays by recording the extensive air showers they create in the atmosphere. This will be done by recording video clips of the development of these showers using a large high-speed video camera to be located on the Japanese Experiment Module of the International Space Station. The video clips will be used to determine the energies and arrival directions of these cosmic rays. The accuracy of these measurements depends on measuring the intrinsic luminosity and the direction of each shower accurately. This paper describes how the accuracy of these measurements will be tested and improved during the mission using a global light system consisting of calibrated flash lamps and lasers located deep in the atmosphere.

Summary Report of JEM-EUSO Workshop at KICP in Chicago

This document contains a summary of the workshop which took place on 22 - 24 February 2012 at the Kavli Institute of Cosmological Physics in the University of Chicago. The goal of the workshop was to discuss the physics reach of the JEM-EUSO mission and how best to implement a global ground based calibration system for the instrument to realize the physics goal of unveiling the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays.

Moments of the B Meson Inclusive Semileptonic Decay Rate using Neutrino Reconstruction

We present a measurement of the composition of B meson inclusive semileptonic decays using 9.4 fb^-1 of e^+e^- data taken with the CLEO detector at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. In addition to measuring the charged lepton kinematics, the neutrino four-vector is inferred using the hermiticity of the detector. We perform a maximum likelihood fit over the full three-dimensional differential decay distribution for the fractional contributions from the B -> X_c l nu processes with X_c = D, D*, D**, and nonresonant X_c, and the process B -> X_u l nu. From the fit results we extract the first and second moments of the M_X^2 and q^2 distributions with minimum lepton-energy requirements of 1.0 GeV and 1.5 GeV. We find = 0.456 +- 0.014 +- 0.045 +- 0.109 (GeV/c^2)^2 with a minimum lepton energy of 1.0 GeV and = 0.293 +- 0.012 +- 0.033 +- 0.048 (GeV/c^2)^2 with minimum lepton energy of 1.5 GeV. The uncertainties are from statistics, detector systematic effects, and model dependence, respectively. As a test of the HQET and OPE calculations, the results for the M^X_c moment as a function of the minimum lepton energy requirement are compared to the predictions.

Measurements of the Branching Fractions and Helicity Amplitudes in B --> D* rho Decays

Using 9.1 fb-1 of e+ e- data collected at the Upsilon(4S) with the CLEO detector using the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, measurements are reported for both the branching fractions and the helicity amplitudes for the decays B- -> D*0 rho- and B0bar -> D*+ rho-. The fraction of longitudinal polarization in B0bar -> D*+ rho- is found to be consistent with that in B0bar -> D*+ l- nubar at q^2 = M^2_rho, indicating that the factorization approximation works well. The longitudinal polarization in the B- mode is similar. The measurements also show evidence of non-trivial final-state interaction phases for the helicity amplitudes.

First Observation of Upsilon(1D) States

The CLEO III experiment has recently accumulated a large statistics sample of 4.73 x 10^6 Upsilon(3S) decays. We present the first evidence for the production of the triplet Upsilon(1D) states in the four-photon cascade, Upslion(3S) -> gamma chi_b(2P), chi_b(2P) -> gamma Upsilon(1D), Upsilon(1D) -> gamma chi_b(1P), chi_b(1P) -> gamma Upsilon(1S), followed by the Upsilon(1S) annihilation to e+ e- or mu+ mu-. The signal has a significance of 9.7 standard deviations. The measured product branching ratio for these five decays, (3.3 +- 0.6 +- 0.5) x 10^{-5}, is consistent with the theoretical estimates. We see a 6.8 standard deviation signal for a state with a mass of 10162.2 +- 1.6 MeV/c^2, consistent with the Upsilon(1D_2) assignment. We also present improved measurements of the Upsilon(3S) -> pi0 pi0 Upsilon(1S) branching ratio and the associated di-pion mass distribution.

Lifetime Differences, direct CP Violation and Partial Widths in D0 Meson Decays to K+K- and pi+pi-

We describe several measurements using the decays D0->K+K- and pi+pi-. We find the ratio of partial widths, Gamma(D0->K+K-)/Gamma(D0->pi+pi-), to be 2.96+/-0.16+/-0.15, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. We observe no evidence for direct CP violation, obtaining A_CP(KK) = (0.0+/-2.2+/-0.8)% and A_CP(pipi = (1.9+/-3.2+/-0.8)%. In the limit of no CP violation we measure the mixing parameter y_CP = -0.012+/-0.025+/-0.014 by measuring the lifetime difference between D0->K+ K- or pi+pi- and the CP neutral state, D0->K-pi+. We see no evidence for mixing.

Evidence of New States Decaying into $Ξ^{\prime}_{c}π$

Using 13.7 $fb^{-1}$ of data recorded by the CLEO detector at CESR, we report evidence for two new charmed baryons: one decaying into $Ξ_c^{0 \prime}π^+$ with the subsequent decay $Ξ_c^{0 \prime} \to Ξ_c^0 γ$, and its isospin partner decaying into $Ξ_c^{+ \prime} π^-$ followed by $Ξ_c^{+\prime} \to Ξ_c^+γ$. We measure the following mass differences for the two states: $M(Ξ_c^0 γπ^+)-M(Ξ_c^0)$=318.2+-1.3+-2.9 MeV, and $M(Ξ_c^+ γπ^-)-M(Ξ_c^+)$=324.0+-1.3+-3.0 MeV. We interpret these new states as the $J^P = 1/2^- Ξ_{c1}$ particles, the charmed-strange analogs of the $Λ_{c1}^+(2593)$.

Measurement of the B0 and B+ meson masses from B0 -> psi(') K_S and B+ -> psi(') K+ decays

Using 9.6 million B meson pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we have fully reconstructed 135 B0 -> psi(') K_S and 526 B+ -> psi(') K+ candidates with very low background. We fitted the psi(')K invariant mass distributions of these B meson candidates and measured the masses of the neutral and charged B mesons to be M(B0)=5279.1+-0.7[stat]+-0.3[syst] MeV/c^2 and M(B+)=5279.1+-0.4[stat]+-0.4[syst] MeV/c^2. The precision is a significant improvement over previous measurements.
