Spin waves in the Frustrated Kagome Lattice Antiferromagnet KFe3(OH)6(SO4)2

The spin wave excitations of the ideal S=5/2 Kagome lattice antiferromagnet KFe3(OH)6(SO4)2 have been measured using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. We directly observe a flat mode which corresponds to a lifted "zero energy mode," verifying a fundamental prediction for the Kagome lattice. A simple Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian provides an excellent fit to our spin wave data. The antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is the primary source of anisotropy and explains the low temperature magnetization and spin structure.

Temperature dependent bilayer ferromagnetism in Sr3Ru2O7

The Ruthenium based perovskites exhibit a wide variety of interesting collective phenomena related to magnetism originating from the Ru 4d electrons. Much remains unknown concerning the nature of magnetic fluctuations and excitations in these systems. We present results of detailed inelastic neutron scattering measurements of Sr3Ru2O7 as a function of temperature, probing the ferromagnetic fluctuations of the bilayer structure. A magnetic response is clearly visible for a range of temperatures, T = 3.8 K up to T = 100 K, and for energy transfers between 2 and 14 meV. These measurements indicate that the ferromagnetic fluctuations manifest in the bilayer structure factor persist to surprisingly large temperatures. This behavior may be related to the proximity of the system in zero magnetic field to the metamagnetic/ferromagnetic transition.

Spin-dynamics of the low-dimensional magnet (CH3)2NH2CuCl3

Dimethylammonium copper (II) chloride (also known as DMACuCl3 or MCCL) is a low dimensional S=1/2 quantum spin system proposed to be an alternating ferro-antiferromagnetic chain with similar magnitude ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange interactions. Subsequently, it was shown that the existing bulk measurements could be adequately modeled by considering DMACuCl3 as independent AFM and FM dimer spin pairs. We present here new inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the spin-excitations in single crystals of DMACuCl3. These results show significant quasi-one-dimensional coupling, however the magnetic excitations do not propagate along the expected direction. We observe a band of excitations with a gap of 0.95 meV and a bandwidth of 0.82 meV.

Field Dependent Phase Diagram of the Quantum Spin Chain (CH3)2NH2CuCl3

Although (CH3)2NH2CuCl3 (MCCL) was first examined in the 1930's [1], there are open questions regarding the magnetic dimensionality and nature of the magnetic properties. MCCL is proposed to be a S=1/2 alternating ferromagnetic antiferromagnetic spin chain alternating along the crystalline a-axis [2,3]. Proposed ferromagnetic (JFM =1.3 meV) and antiferromagnetic (JAFM =1.1 meV) exchange constants make this system particularly interesting for experimental study. Because JFM and JAFM are nearly identical, the system should show competing behavior between S=1/2 (AFM) and S=1(FM) effects. We report low temperature magnetic field dependent susceptibility, chi(H), and specific heat, Cp, of MCCL. These provide an initial magnetic-field versus temperature phase diagram. A zero-field phase transition consistent with long range magnetic order is observed at T=0.9 K. The transition temperature can be reduced via application of a magnetic field. We also present comparisons to a FM/AFM dimer model that accounts for chi(T,H=0) and Cp(H,T).

Magnetic excitations in {Mo72Fe30}

We report cold-neutron inelastic neutron scattering measurements on deuterated samples of the giant polyoxomolybdate magnetic molecule {Mo72Fe30}. The 30 s = 5/2 Fe+3 ions occupy the vertices of an icosidodecahedron, and interact via antiferromagnetic nearest neighbor coupling. The measurements reveal a band of magnetic excitations near E ~ 0.6 meV. The spectrum broadens and shifts to lower energy as the temperature is increased, and also is strongly affected by magnetic fields. The results can be interpreted within the context of an effective three-sublattice spin Hamiltonian.

Longitudinal Magnetic Dynamics and Dimensional Crossover in the Quasi-One-Dimensional, Spin-1/2, Heisenberg Antiferromagnet KCuF3

The spin dynamics of coupled spin-1/2, antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains is predicted to exhibit a novel longitudinal mode at low energies and temperatures below the Neel temperature. This mode is a dimensional crossover effect and reveals the presence of a limited amount of long-range antiferromagnetic order co-existing with quantum fluctuations. In this paper the existence of such a mode is confirmed in the model material KCuF3 using polarized and unpolarized inelastic neutron scattering and the longitudinal polarization of the mode is definitively established. The lineshape is broadened suggesting a reduced lifetime due to decay into spin-waves. In addition the data shows evidence of continuum scattering with a lower edge greater than the longitudinal mode energy. A detailed comparison is made with theoretical predictions and experimental work on other model materials.

Quantum criticality and universal scaling of a quantum antiferromagnet

Quantum effects dominate the behaviour of many diverse materials. Of particular current interest are those systems in the vicinity of a quantum critical point (QCP). Their physical properties are predicted to reflect those of the nearby QCP with universal features independent of the microscopic details. The prototypical QCP is the Luttinger liquid (LL) which is of relevance to many quasi-one-dimensional materials. The magnetic material KCuF3 realizes an array of weakly-coupled spin chains (or LLs) and thus lies close to but not exactly at the Luttinger liquid quantum critical point. By using inelastic neutron scattering we have collected a complete data set of the magnetic correlations of KCuF3 as a function of momentum, energy, and temperature. The LL description is found to be valid over an extensive range of these parameters, and departures from this behaviour at high and low energies and temperatures have been identified and explained.

A neutron scattering study of two-magnon states in the quantum magnet copper nitrate

We report measurements of the two-magnon states in a dimerized antiferromagnetic chain material, copper nitrate (Cu(NO3)2*2.5D2O). Using inelastic neutron scattering we have measured the one and two magnon excitation spectra in a large single crystal. The data are in excellent agreement with a perturbative expansion of the alternating Heisenberg Hamiltonian from the strongly dimerized limit. The expansion predicts a two-magnon bound state for q ~ (2n+1)pi*d which is consistent with the neutron scattering data.

Structural Ordering and Symmetry Breaking in Cd_2Re_2O_7

Single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements have been carried out on Cd_2Re_2O_7 near and below the phase transition it exhibits at Tc' ~195 K. Cd_2Re_2O_7 was recently discovered as the first, and to date only, superconductor with the cubic pyrochlore structure. Superlattice Bragg peaks show an apparently continuous structural transition at Tc', however the order parameter displays anomalously slow growth to ~Tc'/10, and resolution limited critical-like scattering is seen above Tc'. High resolution measurements show the high temperature cubic Bragg peaks to split on entering the low temperature phase, indicating a (likely tetragonal) lowering of symmetry below Tc'.

Zone-boundary excitations in coupled Haldane spin chain compounds PbNi2V2O8 and SrNi2V2O8

Magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets PbNi2V2O8 and SrNi2V2O8 are measured all the way up to the zone boundary energy using inelastic neutron scattering from powder samples. An estimate for next-nearest-neighbor in-chain interactions is obtained. The role played by these interactions in spin-vacancy induced magnetic ordering in PbNi2V2O8 is discussed.

The Magnetic Spin Ladder (C_{5}H_{12}N)_{2}CuBr_{4}: High Field Magnetization and Scaling Near Quantum Criticality

The magnetization, $M(H \leq 30$ T, 0.7 K $\leq T \leq 300$ K), from single crystals and powder samples of (C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ has been used to identify this system as an $S=1/2$ Heisenberg two-leg ladder in the strong coupling limit, $J_{\perp} = 13.3$ K and $J_{\parallel} = 3.8$ K, with $H_{c1} = 6.6$ T and $H_{c2} = 14.6$ T. An inflection point in $M(H, T = 0.7$ K) at half-saturation, $M_{s}/2$, is described by an effective \emph{XXZ} chain. The data exhibit universal scaling behavior in the vicinity of $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$, indicating the system is near a quantum critical point.

Weak ferromagnetism and field-induced spin reorientation in K2V3O8

Magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements indicate long-range antiferromagnetic ordering below TN=4 K in the 2D, S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet K2V3O8. The ordered state exhibits ``weak ferromagnetism'' and novel, field-induced spin reorientations. These experimental observations are well described by a classical, two-spin Heisenberg model incorporating Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and an additional c-axis anisotropy. This additional anisotropy can be accounted for by inclusion of the symmetric anisotropy term recently described by Kaplan, Shekhtman, Entin-Wohlman, and Aharony. This suggests that K2V3O8 may be a very unique system where the qualitative behavior relies on the presence of this symmetric anisotropy.

Quantum and classical dynamics in complex one-dimensional antiferromagnets

Of great recent interest in condensed matter physics are phenomena of coexistence of quantum and classical properties in the same material. Such duality occurs in certain mixed-spin antiferromagnets composed of quantum spin chains interacting through ``auxiliary'' magnetic ions. In this category are linear-chain rare earth nickelates that exhibit a seemingly paradoxical co-existence of long-range magnetic order and one-dimensional gapped quantum spin excitations at low temperatures. In the present paper we propose a unified physical description of these compounds, supported by recent neutron diffraction and inelastic scattering studies. Our basic concept is the effective separation between low-frequency classical and high-frequency quantum spin correlations. This interpretation enables experimental measurements of some previously inaccessible fundamental properties of quantum spin chains, and predicts new exotic magnetic excitations and mechanisms of long-range ordering in complex quantum magnets.

Long-range antiferromagnetic order in the S=1 chain compound LiVGe2O6

The phase transition in the compound LiVGe2O6 has been proposed as a unique example of a spin-Peierls transition in an S=1 antiferromagnetic chain. We report neutron and x-ray diffraction measurements of LiVGe2O6 above and below the phase transition at T=24 K. No evidence is seen for any structural distortion associated with the transition. The neutron results indicate that the low temperature state is antiferromagnetic, driven by ferromagnetic interchain couplings.

Two-magnon states in Cu(NO3)2*2.5D2O using inelastic neutron scattering

We report measurements of the two-magnon states in a dimerized antiferromagnetic chain material, copper nitrate (\QTR{group}{Cu(NO$_{3}$)$_{2}\cdot 2.5$D$_{2}$O}). Using inelastic neutron scattering, we have studied the one- and two-magnon excitation spectra in a large single crystal of this material. We compare this new data with perturbative expansions of the alternating Heisenberg chain and find good agreement with these calculations. The data may also show evidence for the recently proposed S=1 two-magnon bound state (Phys. Rev. B54, R9624 (1996)).

A Novel Longitudinal Mode in the Coupled Quantum Chain Compound KCuF3

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are reported that show a new longitudinal mode in the antiferromagnetically ordered phase of the spin-1/2 quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuF3. This mode signals the cross-over from one-dimensional to three-dimensional behavior and indicates a reduction in the ordered spin moment of a spin-1/2 antiferromagnet. The measurements are compared with recent quantum field theory results and are found to be in excellent agreement. A feature of the data not predicted by theory is a damping of the mode by decay processes to the transverse spin-wave branches.

The role of single-ion excitations in the mixed-spin quasi-1-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet Nd_2BaNiO_5

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on Nd2BaNiO5 single-crystals and powder samples are used to study the dynamic coupling of 1-dimensional Haldane-gap excitations in the S=1 Ni2+ -chains to local crystal-field transitions, associated with the rare earth ions. Substantial interference between the two types of excitations is observed even in the 1-dimensional paramagnetic phase. Despite that, the results provide solid justification for the previously proposed ``static staggered field'' model for R2BaNiO5 nickelates. The observed behaviour is qualitatively explained by a simple chain-Random-Phase-Approximation (chain-RPA) model.

The Origin of Extra Modes in (VO)_2P_2O_7

Recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments on (VO)_2P_2O_7 (VOPO) have seen previously unanticipated sharp peaks in the dynamic structure factor in addition to the pair of triplet modes observed earlier. We argue that the additional features are in essence `shadows' of the previously studied features arising due to umklapp scattering, and suggest experimental tests of this proposal. The basic point is illustrated by some elementary calculations within a strong-coupling expansion for the alternating chain with the right geometry (on which the matrix element for umklapp scattering depends sensitively) taken fully into account.
