On the radiation field of a linearly accelerated charged particle in Born-Infeld theory

The electric potential and the electromagnetic field for a linearly accelerated Born-Infeld charged particle are obtained in an inertial frame by a method that can, in principle, be applied to any electromagnetic theory. The method is based on (i) the fact that the metric near the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole is equivalent to that of Rindler spacetime, and (ii) a theorem that guarantees that the electrostatic potential for a given nonlinear theory in a static, spherically symmetric spacetime is entirely specified by the Maxwellian electrostatic potential in the same background. Using analytical and numerical methods, the features of the radiation field and the radiation-reaction for such an accelerated particle are discussed in detail.

Quantum relaxation in a system of harmonic oscillators with time-dependent coupling

In the context of the de Broglie-Bohm pilot wave theory, numerical simulations for simple systems have shown that states that are initially out of quantum equilibrium - thus violating the Born rule - usually relax over time to the expected $|ψ|^2$ distribution on a coarse-grained level. We analyze the relaxation of nonequilibrium initial distributions for a system of coupled one-dimensional harmonic oscillators in which the coupling depends explicitly on time through numerical simulations, focusing in the influence of different parameters such as the number of modes, the coarse-graining length and the coupling constant. We show that in general the system studied here tends to equilibrium, but the relaxation can be retarded depending on the values of the parameters, particularly to the one related to the strength of the interaction. Possible implications on the detection of relic nonequilibrium systems are discussed.

Primordial Magnetogenesis in a Bouncing Universe

We investigate primordial magnetogenesis and the evolution of the electromagnetic field through a quantum bounce, in a model that starts in the far past from a contracting phase where only dust is present and the electromagnetic field is in the adiabatic quantum vacuum state. By including a coupling between curvature and electromagnetism of the form $RF_{μν}F^{μν}$, we find acceptable magnetic field seeds within the current observational constraints at 1 mega-parsec (Mpc), and that the magnetic power spectrum evolves as a power-law with spectral index $n_B=6$. It is also shown that the electromagnetic backreaction is not an issue in the model under scrutiny.

Cosmography and the redshift drift in Palatini $f({\cal R})$ theories

We present an application to cosmological models in $f({\cal R})$ theories within the Palatini formalism of a method that combines cosmography and the explicit form of the field equations in the calculation of the redshift drift. The method yields a sequence of constraint equations which lead to limits on the parameter space of a given $f({\cal R})$-model. Two particular families of $f({\cal R})$-cosmologies capable of describing the current dynamics of the universe are explored here: (i) power law theories of the type $f({\cal R})={\cal R}-β/{\cal R}^n$, and (ii) theories of the form $f({\cal R})={\cal R}+α\ln{\cal R} -β$. The constraints on $(n,β)$ and $(α,β)$, respectively, limit the values to intervals that are narrower than the ones previously obtained. As a byproduct, we show that when applied to General Relativity, the method yields values of the kinematic parameters with much smaller errors that those obtained directly from observations.

Evolution of Vacuum Bubbles Embeded in Inhomogeneous Spacetimes

We study the propagation of bubbles of new vacuum in a radially inhomogeneous background filled with dust or radiation, and including a cosmological constant, as a first step in the analysis of the influence of inhomogeneities in the evolution of an inflating region. We also compare the cases with dust and radiation backgrounds and show that the evolution of the bubble in radiation environments is notably different from that in the corresponding dust cases, both for homogeneous and inhomogeneous ambients, leading to appreciable differences in the evolution of the proper radius of the bubble.

Structure of Compact Stars in R-squared Palatini Gravity

We analyse configurations of compact stars in the so-called R-squared gravity in the Palatini formalism. Using a realistic equation of state we show that the mass-radius configurations are lighter than their counterparts in General Relativity. We also obtain the internal profiles, which run in strong correlation with the derivatives of the equation of state, leading to regions where the mass parameter decreases with the radial coordinate in a counter-intuitive way. In order to analyse such correlation, we introduce a parametrisation of the equation of state given by multiple polytropes, which allows us to explicitly control its derivatives. We show that, even in a limiting case where hard phase transitions in matter are allowed, the internal profile of the mass parameter still presents strange features and the calculated M-R configurations also yield NSs lighter than those obtained in General Relativity.

A Born-Infeld-like f(R) gravity

Several features of an $f(R)$ theory in which there is a maximum value for the curvature are analyzed. The theory admits the vaccuum solutions of GR, and also the radiation evolution for the scale factor of the standard cosmological model. Working in the Jordan frame, a complete analysis of the phase space is performed, and its results supported with examples obtainted by numerical integration. In particular, we showed that theory has nonsingular cosmological solutions which after the bounce enter a phase of de Sitter expansion and subsequently relax to a GR-like radiation-dominated evolution.

Bouncing Cosmologies

We review the general features of nonsingular universes ({\em i.e.} those that go from an era of accelerated collapse to an expanding era without displaying a singularity) as well as cyclic universes. We discuss the mechanisms behind the bounce, and analyze examples of solutions that implement these mechanisms. Observational consequences of such regular cosmologies are also considered, with emphasis in the behavior of the perturbations.

Creation of cosmological magnetic fields in a bouncing cosmology

We show (in a completely analytical and exact manner) that an efficient magnetic field amplification method is operative during the bounce in a time-dependent gauge coupling model. The cosmological magnetic fields so generated have particular spectral features, and may be observed by future CMB measurements and by direct cluster measurements.

Cosmological Effects of Nonlinear Electrodynamics

It will be shown that a given realization of nonlinear electrodynamics, used as source of Einstein's equations, generates a cosmological model with interesting features, namely a phase of current cosmic acceleration, and the absence of an initial singularity, thus pointing to a way to solve two important problems in cosmology.

Production of photons in a bouncing universe

Using a new non-singular solution,it is shown that the production of photons in dilaton electrodynamics in a cosmological setting is increased if the effect of matter creation on the geometry is taken into account. This increment may be related to the problem of the origin of magnetic fields in the universe.

Non-linear electrodynamics and the acceleration of the universe

It is shown that the addition of a non-linear term to the Lagrangian of the electromagnetic field yields a fluid with an asymptotically super-negative equation of state, causing an accelerated expansion of the universe. Some general properties of nonlinear electromagnetism in cosmology are also discussed.

Causality and charged spin-2 fields in an electromagnetic background

We show that, contrary to common belief, the propagation of a spin-2 field in an electromagnetic background is {\em causal}. The proof will be given in the Fierz formalism which, as we shall see, is free of the ambiguity present in the more usual Einstein representation. We shall also review the proof in this latter representation.

Effective Geometry

We introduce the concept of effective geometry by studying several systems in which it arises naturally. As an example of the power and conciseness of the method, it is shown that a flowing dielectric medium with a linear response to an external electric field can be used to generate an analog geometry that has many of the formal properties of a \Sch black hole for light rays, in spite of birefringence. The surface gravity of this analog black hole has a contribution that depends only on the dielectric properties of the fluid (in addition to the usual term dependent on the acceleration). This term may be give a hint to a new mechanism to increase the temperature of Hawking radiation.

Analysis of static and spherically-symmetric solutions in NDL theory of gravitation

We investigate a static solution with spherical symmetry of a recently proposed field theory of gravitation. In this so-called NDL theory, matter interacts with gravity in accordance with the Weak Equivalence Principle, while gravitons have a nonlinear self-interaction. It is shown that the predictions of NDL agree with those of General Relativity in the three classic tests. However, there are potential differences in the strong-field limit, which we illustrate by proving that this theory does not allow the existence of static and spherically symmetric black holes.

On the stress-energy tensor of a rotating wormhole

We analyze the stress-energy tensor necessary to generate a general stationary and axisymmetric spacetime. The constraints on the geometry arising from considering a perfect fluid as a source are derived. For a fluid with a nonzero stress tensor, we obtain two necessary conditions on the metric. As an example, we show that the rotating wormhole presented in the literature can not be described by either a perfect fluid or by a fluid with anisotropic stresses.

A nongravitational wormhole

Using the effective metric formalism for photons in a nonlinear electromagnetic theory, we show that a certain field configuration in Born-Infeld electromagnetism in flat spacetime can be interpreted as an ultrastatic spherically symmetric wormhole. We also discuss some properties of the effective metric that are valid for any field configuration.
