The London theory of the crossing-vortex lattice in highly anisotropic layered superconductors

A novel description of Josephson vortices (JVs) crossed by the pancake vortices (PVs) is proposed on the basis of the anisotropic London theory. The field distribution of a JV and its energy have been calculated for both dense ($a<λ_J$) and dilute ($a>λ_J$) PV lattices with distance $a$ between PVs, and the nonlinear JV core size $λ_J$. It is shown that the ``shifted'' PV lattice (PVs displaced mainly along JVs in the crossing vortex lattice structure), formed in high out-of-plane magnetic fields transforms into the PV lattice ``trapped'' by the JV sublattice at a certain field, lower than $Φ_0/γ^2s^2$, where $Φ_0$ is the flux quantum, $γ$ is the anisotropy parameter and $s$ is the distance between CuO$_2$ planes. With further decreasing $B_z$, the free energy of the crossing vortex lattice structure (PV and JV sublattices coexist separately) can exceed the free energy of the tilted lattice (common PV-JV vortex structure) in the case of $γs<λ_{ab}$ with the in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ if the low ($B_x<γΦ_0/λ_{ab}^2$) or high ($B_x\gtrsim Φ_0/γs^2$) in-plane magnetic field is applied. It means that the crossing vortex structure is realized in the intermediate field orientations, while the tilted vortex lattice can exist if the magnetic field is aligned near the $c$-axis and the $ab$-plane as well. In the intermediate in-plane fields $γΦ_0/λ_{ab}^2\lesssim B_x \lesssim Φ_0/γs^2$, the crossing vortex structure with the ``trapped'' PV sublattice seems to settle in until the lock-in transition occurs since this structure has the lower energy with respect to the tilted vortex structure in the magnetic field ${\vec H}$ oriented near the $ab$-plane.

A generalized spherical version of the Blume-Emery-Griffits model with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions

We have investigated analitycally the phase diagram of a generalized spherical version of the Blume-Emery-Griffiths model that includes ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic spin interactions as well as quadrupole interactions in zero and nonzero magnetic field. We show that in three dimensions and zero magnetic field a regular paramagnetic-ferromagnetic (PM-FM) or a paramagnetic-antiferromagnetic (PM-AFM) phase transition occurs whenever the magnetic spin interactions dominate over the quadrupole interactions. However, when spin and quadrupole interactions are important, there appears a reentrant FM-PM or AFM-PM phase transition at low temperatures, in addition to the regular PM-FM or PM-AFM phase transitions. On the other hand, in a nonzero homogeneous external magnetic field $H$, we find no evidence of a transition to the state with spontaneous magnetization for FM interactions in three dimensions. Nonethelesss, for AFM interactions we do get a scenario similar to that described above for zero external magnetic field, except that the critical temperatures are now functions of $H$. We also find two critical field values, $H_{c1}$, at which the reentrance phenomenon dissapears and $H_{c2}$ ($H_{c1}\approx 0.5H_{c2}$), above which the PM-AFM transition temperature vanishes.

Step-wise Behavior of Vortex-Lattice Melting Transition in Tilted Magnetic Fields in Single Crystals Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

The vortex lattice melting transition in single crystals Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d was studied by the in-plane resistivity measurements in magnetic fields tilted away from the c-axis to the ab-plane. In order to avoid the surface barrier effect which hinders the melting transition in the conventional transport measurements, we used the Corbino geometry of electric contacts. For the first time, the complete Hc-Hab phase diagram of the melting-transition in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d is obtained. The c-axis melting field component Hc-melt exhibits the novel, step-wise dependence on the in-plane magnetic fields Hab which is discussed on the base of the crossing vortex lattice structure. The sharp change of resistance behavior observed near the ab-plane suggests transformation from first-order to second-order phase transition.
