Heavy Quarkonium Physics

This report is the result of the collaboration and research effort of the Quarkonium Working Group over the last three years. It provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in heavy-quarkonium theory and experiment, covering quarkonium spectroscopy, decay, and production, the determination of QCD parameters from quarkonium observables, quarkonia in media, and the effects on quarkonia of physics beyond the Standard Model. An introduction to common theoretical and experimental tools is included. Future opportunities for research in quarkonium physics are also discussed.

Updated Estimate of the Muon Magnetic Moment Using Revised Results from e+e- Annihilation

A new evaluation of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon magnetic moment is presented. We take into account the reanalysis of the low-energy e+e- annihilation cross section into hadrons by the CMD-2 Collaboration. The agreement between e+e- and tau spectral functions in the pi pi channel is found to be much improved. Nevertheless, significant discrepancies remain in the center-of-mass energy range between 0.85 and 1.0 GeV, so that we refrain from averaging the two data sets. The values found for the lowest-order hadronic vacuum polarization contributions are a_mu[had,LO] = (696.3 +- 6.2[exp] +- 3.6[rad])e-10 (e+e- -based) and a_mu[had,LO] = (711.0 +- 5.0[exp] +- 0.8[rad] +- 2.8[SU2])e-10 (tau-based), where the errors have been separated according to their sources: experimental, missing radiative corrections in e+e- data, and isospin breaking. The corresponding Standard Model predictions for the muon magnetic anomaly read a_mu = (11,659,180.9 +- 7.2[had] +- 3.5[LBL] +- 0.4[QED+EW])e-10 (e+e- -based) and a_mu = (11,659,195.6 +- 5.8[had] +- 3.5[LBL] +- 0.4[QED+EW])e-10 (tau-based), where the errors account for the hadronic, light-by-light (LBL) scattering and electroweak contributions. The deviations from the measurement at BNL are found to be (22.1 +- 7.2 +- 3.5 +- 8.0)e-10 (1.9 sigma) and (7.4 +- 5.8 +- 3.5 +- 8.0)e-10 (0.7 sigma) for the e+e- and tau-based estimates, respectively, where the second error is from the LBL contribution and the third one from the BNL measurement.

Monte-Carlo Simulation of Exclusive Channels in e+e- Annihilation at Low Energy

Software package for Monte-Carlo simulation of e+e- exclusive annihilation channels written in the C++ language for Linux/Solaris platforms has been developed. It incorporates matrix elements for several mechanisms of multipion production in a model of consequent two and three-body resonance decays. Possible charge states of intermediate and final particles are accounted automatically under the assumption of isospin conservation. Interference effects can be taken into acccount. Package structure allows adding new matrix elements written in a gauge-invariant form.

Confronting Spectral Functions from e+e- Annihilation and tau Decays: Consequences for the Muon Magnetic Moment

Vacuum polarization integrals involve the vector spectral functions which can be experimentally determined from two sources: (i) e+e- annihilation cross sections and (ii) hadronic tau decays. Recently results with comparable precision have become available from CMD-2 on one side, and ALEPH, CLEO and OPAL on the other. The comparison of the respective spectral functions involves a correction from isospin-breaking effects which is evaluated. After correction it is found that the dominant 2pi spectral functions do not agree within experimental and theoretical uncertainties. Some problems are also found for the 4pi spectral functions where different experiments do not agree well with each other. The consequences of these discrepancies for vacuum polarization calculations are presented, with emphasis on the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The work includes a complete reevaluation of all exclusive cross sections, taking into account the most recent data that became available in particular from the Novosibirsk experiments and applying corrections for the missing radiative corrections. The values found for the lowest-order hadronic vacuum polarization contributions are a_mu[had,LO] = (684.7 +- 6.0[exp] +- 3.6[rad])x10^(-10) [e^+e^- -based], and a_mu[had,LO] = (709.0 +- 5.1[exp] +- 1.2[rad] +- 2.8[SU(2)])x10^(-10) [tau-based]. The errors have been separated according to their sources: experimental, radiative corrections in e+e- data, and isospin-breaking. We observe deviations of the full SM prediction with the recent BNL measurement at the 3.0 (e+e-) and 0.9 (tau) sigma level, when adding experimental and theoretical errors in quadrature.

Radiative Decays, Nonet Symmetry and SU(3) Breaking

We re-examine the problem of simultaneously describing in a consistent way all radiative and leptonic decays of light mesons (V -> P gamma, P -> V gamma, P -> gamma gamma, V -> e^+ e^-). For this purpose, we rely on the Hidden Local Symmetry model in both its anomalous and non--anomalous sectors. We show that the SU(3) symmetry breaking scheme proposed by Bando, Kugo and Yamawaki, supplemented with nonet symmetry breaking in the pseudoscalar sector, allows one to reach a nice agreement with all data, except for the K^{*+/-} radiative decay. An extension of this breaking pattern allows one to account for this particular decay mode too. Considered together, the whole set of radiative decays provides a pseudoscalar mixing angle theta_P ~ -11^o and a value for theta_V which is ~ 3^o from that of ideal mixing. We also show that it is impossible, in a practical sense, to disentangle the effects of nonet symmetry breaking and those of glue inside the eta', using only light meson decays.

Testing non-perturbative strong interaction effects via the Adler function

Based on the compilation of the available e^+e^- data, we present a non-perturbative estimation of the Adler function derived from the electromagnetic current correlator, and compare it with theoretical predictions from perturbative QCD (pQCD). The comparison is presented for the Euclidean region where pQCD is supposed to work best. We emphasize that such a comparison only makes sense if one takes into account the exact mass dependence of the perturbative predictions, which are available for the leading and next to leading (two-loop) order. In order to have the correct physical mass dependence in the evolution of the strong coupling as well, we utilize the MOM scheme beta-function to two-loops calculated recently. Three-loop effects, which are available as series expansions for low and high momentum transfer, are included by using Pade improvement. We discuss possible constraints on non-perturbative effects as suggested by the operator product expansion.

New results in rho^0 meson physics

We compare the predictions of a range of existing models based on the Vector Meson Dominance hypothesis with data on e^+ e^- -> pi^+ pi^$ and e^+ e^- -> mu^+ mu^- cross-sections and the phase and near-threshold behavior of the timelike pion form factor, with the aim of determining which (if any) of these models is capable of providing an accurate representation of the full range of experimental data. We find that, of the models considered, only that proposed by Bando et al. is able to consistently account for all information, provided one allows its parameter "a" to vary from the usual value of 2 to 2.4. Our fit with this model gives a point-like coupling (gamma pi^+ π^-) of magnitude ~ -e/6, while the common formulation of VMD excludes such a term. The resulting values for the rho mass and pi^+ pi^- and e^+e^- partial widths as well as the branching ratio for the decay omega -> pi^+ pi^- obtained within the context of this model are consistent with previous results.
