Absence of first order magnetic transition, a curious case of Mn3InC

The volume expanding magnetostructural transition in Mn$_3$GaC and Mn$_3$SnC has been identified to be due to distortion of Mn$_6$C octahedra. Despite a similar lattice volume as Mn$_3$SnC and similar valence electron contribution to the density of states as in Mn$_3$GaC, Mn$_3$InC does not undergo a first order magnetostructural transformation like the Ga and Sn antiperovskite counterparts. A systematic investigation of its structure and magnetic properties using probes like x-ray diffraction, magnetization measurements, neutron diffraction and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) reveal that though the octahedra are distorted resulting in long and short Mn -- Mn bonds and different magnetic moments on Mn atoms, the interaction between them remains ferromagnetic. This has been attributed to the strain on the Mn$_6$C octahedra produced due to the relatively larger size of In atom compared to Sn and Ga. The size of In atom constricts the deformation of Mn$_6$C octahedra giving rise to Mn -- Mn distances that favor only ferromagnetic interactions in the compound.

Phase separation and effect of strain on magnetic properties of Mn$_3$Ga$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$C

While the unit cell volume of compounds belonging to the Mn$_3$Ga$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$C, (0 $ \le x \le $ 1) series shows a conformity with Vegard's law, their magnetic and magnetocaloric properties behave differently from those of parent compounds Mn$_3$GaC and Mn$_3$SnC. A correlation between the observed magnetic properties and underlying magnetic and local structure suggests that replacing Ga atoms by larger atoms of Sn results in the formation of Ga-rich and Sn-rich clusters. As a result, even though the long range structure appears to be cubic, Mn atoms find themselves in two different local environments. The packing of these two different local structures into a single global structure induces tensile/compressive strains on the Mn$_{6}$C functional unit and is responsible for the observed magnetic properties across the entire solid solution range.

Mechanism of magnetostructural transformation in multifunctional Mn$_3$GaC

Mn$_3$GaC undergoes a ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic, volume discontinuous cubic-cubic phase transition as a function of temperature, pressure and magnetic field. Through a series of temperature dependent x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy experiments at the Mn K and Ga K edge, it is shown that the first order magnetic transformation in Mn$_3$GaC is entirely due to distortions in Mn sub-lattice and with a very little role for Mn-C interactions. The distortion in Mn sub-lattice results in long and short Mn-Mn bonds with the longer Mn-Mn bonds favoring ferromagnetic interactions and the shorter Mn-Mn bonds favoring antiferromagnetic interactions. At the first order transition, the shorter Mn-Mn bonds exhibit an abrupt decrease in their length resulting in an antiferromagnetic ground state and a strained lattice.

Effect of site occupancy disorder on Martensitic properties of Mn$_{2}$NiIn type alloys: x-ray absorption fine structure study

We have carried out \textit{ab-initio} calculations of local structure of Mn and Ni in Mn$_{2}$Ni$_{1.5}$In$_{0.5}$ alloy with different site occupancies in order to understand the similarities in martensitic and magnetic properties of Mn$_{2}$Ni$_{1+x}$In$_{1-x}$ and Ni$_2$Mn$_{1+x}$In$_{1-x}$ alloys. Our results show that in Mn$_{2}$Ni$_{1+x}$In$_{1-x}$ alloys there is a strong possibility of Mn atoms occupying all the three, X, Y and Z sites of X$_2$YZ Heusler structure while Ni atoms preferentially occupy the X sites. Such a site occupancy disorder of Mn atoms is in addition to a local structural disorder due to size differences between Mn and In atoms which is also present in Ni$_2$Mn$_{1+x}$In$_{1-x}$ alloys. Further, a comparison of the calculations with experimental XAFS at the Mn and Ni K edges in Mn$_{2-y}$Ni$_{1.6+y}$In$_{0.4}$ ($-0.08 \le y \le 0.08$) indicate a strong connection between martensitic transformation and occupancy of Z sites by Mn atoms.

Ferromagnetic interactions and martensitic transformation in Fe doped Ni-Mn-In shape memory alloys

The structure, magnetic and martensitic properties of Fe doped Ni-Mn-In magnetic shape memory alloys have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry, magnetization, resistivity, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and EXAFS. While Ni$_{2}$MnIn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$ ($0 \le x \le 0.6$) alloys are ferromagnetic and non martensitic, the martensitic transformation temperature in Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1.5} $In$_{1-y}$Fe$_{y}$ and Ni$_{2}$Mn$ _{1.6} $In$_{1-y}$Fe$_{y}$ increases for lower Fe concentrations ($y \le 0.05$) before decreasing sharply for higher Fe concentrations. XRD analysis reveals presence of cubic and tetragonal structural phases in Ni$_{2}$MnIn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$ at room temperature with tetragonal phase content increasing with Fe doping. Even though the local structure around Mn and Ni in these Fe doped alloys is similar to martensitic Mn rich Ni-Mn-In alloys, presence of ferromagnetic interactions and structural disorder induced by Fe affect Mn-Ni-Mn antiferromagnetic interactions resulting in suppression of martensitic transformation in these Fe doped alloys.

Importance of structural distortions in enhancement of transition temperature in FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ superconductors

Temperature (12K $\le$ T $\le$ 300K) dependent extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies at the Fe K edge in FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ (x = 0, 0.5 and 1.0) compounds have been carried out to understand the reasons for increase in T$_C$ upon Te doping in FeSe. While local distortions are present near superconducting onset in FeSe and FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, they seem to be absent in non superconducting FeTe. Of crucial importance is the variation of anion height. In FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, near superconducting onset, the two heights, $h_{Fe-Se}$ and $h_{Fe-Te}$ show a nearly opposite behaviour. These changes indicate a possible correlation between Fe-chalcogen hybridization and the superconducting transition temperature in these Fe-chalcogenides.

Local structural distortions and their role in superconductivity in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ superconductors

EXAFS studies at the As K edge as a function of temperature have been carried out in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ ($x$ = 0 and 0.2) compounds to understand the role of local structural distortions superconductivity observed in F doped compound. A significant correlation between thermal variation of local structural parameters like anion height and superconducting onset is found in the fluorinated compound. Such a variation in anion height is absent in non-superconducting compound. Increase in Fe-As bond distance just below superconducting onset temperature indicates a similarity in distortions observed in high T$_C$ cuprates and these Fe based superconductors.

Antiferromagnetic Exchange Interactions in Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1.4}$In$_{0.6}$ ferromagnetic Heusler alloy

Magnetism in Ni-Mn-Z (Z = Ga,In,Sn,Sb) Heusler alloys has so far been predominantly attributed to Rudermann-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida type interactions between Mn atoms. We investigate magnetic interactions in one such alloy, Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1.4}$In$_{0.6}$ and attempt to explain the origin of antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions that coexist with ferromagnetic ones. Through the combination of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we find that Ni plays an important role along with Mn in the overall magnetism. A significant hybridization that develops between Mn and Ni orbitals results in a small antiferromagnetic moment at Ni sites. The shift in the XMCD hysteresis loops in the martensitic phase suggests that antiferromagnetism results from superexchange like interactions between Mn atoms mediated by Ni.

Influence of local structure on magnetic properties of Layered Cobaltites PrBaCo_2O{5+δ}, δ> 0.5

The effect of local structure on the magnetic and transport properties of the layered perovskites has been investigated. The samples PrBaCo$_{2}$O$_{5+δ}$, ($δ$ = 0.80 and 0.67) though crystallize in the same 112 type tetragonal structure have different magnetic ground states. Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy has been employed to explain the changes in magnetic interactions based on the rotation and tilting of CoO polyhedra in these oxygen rich double perovskites.

Role of Ni-Mn hybridization in magnetism of martensitic state of Ni-Mn-In shape memory alloys

Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) studies on Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{25+x}$In$_{25-x}$ have been carried out at Ni and Mn K edge as a function of temperature. Thermal evolution of nearest neighbor Ni-Mn and Mn-Mn bond distances in the martensitic phase give a clear evidence of a close relation between structural and magnetic degrees of freedom in these alloys. In particular, the study highlights the role of Ni 3d - Mn 3d hybridization in the magnetism of martensitic phase of these alloys.

Correlation between Local Structure Distortions and Martensitic Transformation in Ni-Mn-In alloys

The local structural distortions arising as a consequence of increasing Mn content in Ni_2Mn_1+xIn_1-x (x=0, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6) and its effect on martensitic transformation have been studied using Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Using the room temperature EXAFS at the Ni and Mn K-edges in the above compositions, the changes associated with respect to the local structure of these absorbing atoms are compared. It is seen that in the alloys exhibiting martensitic transformation ($x \ge 0.4$) there is a significant difference between the Ni-In and Ni-Mn bond lengths even in the austenitic phase indicating atomic volume to be the main factor in inducing martensitic transformation in Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloys.

Local structural changes in paramagnetic and charge ordered phases of Sm0.2Pr0.3Sr0.5MnO3: An EXAFS Study

Sm{0.5-x}Pr{x}Sr{0.5}MnO{3} exhibits variety of ground states as x is varied from 0 to 0.5. At an intermediate doping of x = 0.3 a charge-ordered CE type antiferromagnetic insulating (AFI) ground state is seen. The transition to this ground state is from a paramagnetic insulating (PMI) phase through a ferromagnetic metallic phase (FMM). Local structures in PMI and AFI phases of x = 0.3 sample have been investigated using Pr K-edge and Sm K-edge Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS). It can be seen that the tilting and rotation of the MnO6 octahedra about the b-axis are responsible for the charge ordered CE-type antiferromagnetic ground state at low temperatures. In addition a shift in the position of the rare earth ion along the c-axis has to be considered to account for observed distribution of bond distances around the rare earth ion.

Effect of Ti4+ substitution on structural, transport and magnetic properties of La0.67Sr0.33Mn1-xTixO3

La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$O$_{3}$ ($0 \le x \le 0.20$) polycrystalline materials are prepared by employing lower annealing temperature compared to the temperatures reported for the materials of the same composition. The transport and magnetic properties of these materials are significantly different from those compounds prepared at higher annealing temperature. Samples with $x < 0.10$, show metal-insulator transition and those with $x \ge 0.10$ exhibit insulating behavior over the entire temperature range investigated. A gradual transition occurs from ferromagnetic-metallic state to ferromagnetic-insulator state with increasing Ti substitution. Lattice parameters and bond lengths of Mn and its near neighbours however do not change appreciably with the dopant content $x$ in these materials. It is shown that Ti$^{4+}$ doping in the low temperature annealed samples is inhomogeneous resulting in isolated Mn rich regions that are connected by a variable range hopping polaron.
