Circular polarization measurement for individual gamma rays in capture reactions with intense pulsed neutrons

Measurements of circular polarization of $\gamma$-ray emitted from neutron capture reactions provide valuable information for nuclear physics studies. The spin and parity of excited states can be determined by measuring the circular polarization from polarized neutron capture reactions. Furthermore, the $\gamma$-ray circular polarization in a neutron capture resonance is crucial for studying the enhancement effect of parity nonconservation in compound nuclei. The $\gamma$-ray circular polarization can be measured using a polarimeter based on magnetic Compton scattering. A polarimeter was constructed, and its performance indicators were evaluated using a circularly polarized $\gamma$-ray beam. Furthermore, as a demonstration, the $\gamma$-ray circular polarization was measured in $^{32}$S($\vec{\textrm{n}}$,$\gamma$)$^{33}$S reactions with polarized neutrons.

Transverse asymmetry of individual $\gamma$-rays in the $^{139}$La($\vec{n}$, $\gamma$)$^{140}$La reaction

The enhancement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the vicinity of $p$-wave compound nuclear resonances was observed for a variety of medium-heavy nuclei. The enhanced parity-violating asymmetry can be understood using the $s$-$p$ mixing model. The $s$-$p$ mixing model predicts several neutron energy-dependent angular correlations between the neutron momentum $\vec k_n$, neutron spin $\vec\sigma_n$, $\gamma$-ray momentum $\vec k_\gamma$, and $\gamma$-ray polarization $\vec\sigma_\gamma$ in the $(n,\gamma)$ reaction. In this paper, the improved value of the transverse asymmetry of $\gamma$-ray emissions, corresponding to a correlation term $\vec{\sigma}_n\cdot(\vec k_n\times\vec k_\gamma)$ in the $^{139}\mathrm{La}(\vec n,\gamma)^{140}\mathrm{La}$ reaction, and the transverse asymmetries in the transitions to several low excited states of $^{140}\mathrm{La}$ are reported.

High sensitivity of a future search for P-odd/T-odd interactions on the 0.75 eV $p$-wave resonance in $\vec{n}+^{139}\vec{\rm La}$ forward transmission determined using pulsed neutron beam

Neutron transmission experiments can offer a new type of highly sensitive search for time-reversal invariance violating (TRIV) effects in nucleon-nucleon interactions via the same enhancement mechanism observed for large parity violating (PV) effects in neutron-induced compound nuclear processes. In these compound processes, the TRIV cross-section is given as the product of the PV cross-section, a spin-factor $\kappa$, and a ratio of TRIV and PV matrix elements. We determined $\kappa$ to be $0.59\pm0.05$ for $^{139}$La+$n$ using both $(n, \gamma)$ spectroscopy and ($\vec{n}+^{139}\vec{\rm La}$) transmission. This result quantifies for the first time the high sensitivity of the $^{139}$La 0.75~eV $p$-wave resonance in a future search for P-odd/T-odd interactions in ($\vec{n}+^{139}\vec{\rm La}$) forward transmission.

Spin dependence in the $p$-wave resonance of ${^{139}\vec{\rm{La}}+\vec{n}}$

We measured the spin dependence in a neutron-induced $p$-wave resonance by using a polarized epithermal neutron beam and a polarized nuclear target. Our study focuses on the 0.75~eV $p$-wave resonance state of $^{139}$La+$n$, where largely enhanced parity violation has been observed. We determined the partial neutron width of the $p$-wave resonance by measuring the spin dependence of the neutron absorption cross section between polarized $^{139}\rm{La}$ and polarized neutrons. Our findings serve as a foundation for the quantitative study of the enhancement effect of the discrete symmetry violations caused by mixing between partial amplitudes in the compound nuclei.

Angular distribution of $\gamma$-rays from a neutron-induced $p$-wave resonance of $^{132}$Xe

A neutron-energy dependent angular distribution was measured for individual $\gamma$-rays from the 3.2 eV $p$-wave resonance of $^{131}$Xe+$n$, that shows enhanced parity violation owing to a mixing between $s$- and $p$-wave amplitudes. The $\gamma$-ray transitions from the $p$-wave resonance were identified, and the angular distribution with respect to the neutron momentum was evaluated as a function of the neutron energy for 7132 keV $\gamma$-rays, which correspond to a transition to the 1807 keV excited state of $^{132}$Xe. The angular distribution is considered to originate from the interference between $s$- and $p$-wave amplitudes, and will provide a basis for a quantitative understanding of the enhancement mechanism of the fundamental parity violation in compound nuclei.

Measurement of the transverse asymmetry of $\gamma$-rays in the $^{117}$Sn(n,$\gamma$)$^{118}$Sn reaction

Largely enhanced parity-violating effects observed in compound resonances induced by epithermal neutrons are currently attributed to the mixing of parity-unfavored partial amplitudes in the entrance channel of the compound states. Furthermore, it is proposed that the same mechanism that enhances the parity-violation also enhances the breaking of time-reversal-invariance in the compound nucleus. The entrance-channel mixing induces energy-dependent spin-angular correlations of individual $\gamma$-rays emitted from the compound nuclear state. For a detailed study of the mixing model, a $\gamma$-ray yield in the reaction of $^{117}$Sn(n,$\gamma$)$^{118}$Sn was measured using the pulsed beam of polarized epithermal neutrons and Ge detectors. An angular dependence of asymmetric $\gamma$-ray yields for the orientation of the neutron polarization was observed.

Angular distribution of $\gamma$ rays from the p-wave resonance of $^{118}$Sn

The neutron energy-dependent angular distribution of $\gamma$ rays from $^{117}{\rm Sn}(n,\gamma)$ reaction was measured with germanium detectors and a pulsed neutron beam. The angular distribution was clearly observed in $\gamma$-ray emissions with an energy of 9327 keV which corresponds to the transition from a neutron resonance of $^{117}{\rm Sn}+n$ to the ground state of $^{118}{\rm Sn}$. The angular distribution causes an angular-dependent asymmetric resonance shape. An asymmetry $A_{\rm LH}$ was defined as $(N_{\rm L}-N_{\rm H})/(N_{\rm L}+N_{\rm H})$, where $N_{\rm L}$ and $N_{\rm H}$ are integrated values for lower- and higher-energy regions of a neutron resonance, respectively. We found that the $A_{\rm LH}$ has the angular dependence of $(A \cos \theta_\gamma +B)$, where $\theta_\gamma$ is the $\gamma$-ray emission angle with respect to the incident neutron momentum, with $A=0.394 \pm 0.073$ and $B = 0.118 \pm 0.029$ in the 1.33 eV p-wave resonance.

Energy dependent angular distribution of individual $\gamma$-rays in the $^{139}$La($n$, $\gamma$)$^{140}$La* reaction

Neutron energy-dependent angular distributions were observed for individual $\gamma$-rays from the 0.74 eV p-wave resonance of $^{139}$La+$n$ to several lower excited states of $^{140}$La. The $\gamma$-ray signals were analyzed in a two dimensional histogram of the $\gamma$-ray energy, measured with distributed germanium detectors, and neutron energy, determined with the time-of-flight of pulsed neutrons, to identify the neutron energy dependence of the angular distribution for each individual $\gamma$-rays. The angular distribution was also found for a photopeak accompanied with a faint p-wave resonance component in the neutron energy spectrum. Our results can be interpreted as interference between s- and p-wave amplitudes which may be used to study discrete symmetries of fundamental interactions.

Development and application of a $^3$He Neutron Spin Filter at J-PARC

We are developing a neutron polarizer with polarized $^3$He gas, referred to as a $^3$He spin filter, based on the Spin Exchange Optical Pumping (SEOP) for polarized neutron scattering experiments at Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). A $^3$He gas-filling station was constructed at J-PARC, and several $^3$He cells with long spin relaxation times have been fabricated using the gas-filling station. A laboratory has been prepared in the MLF beam hall for polarizing $^3$He cells, and compact pumping systems with laser powers of 30~W and 110~W, which can be installed onto a neutron beamline, have been developed. A $^3$He polarization of 85% was achieved at a neutron beamline by using the pumping system with the 110~W laser. Recently, the first user experiment utilizing the $^3$He spin filter was conducted, and there have been several more since then. The development and utilization of $^3$He spin filters at MLF of J-PARC are reported.

Photo-production of neutral kaons on 12C in the threshold region

Kaon photo-production process on $^{12}$C has been studied by measuring neutral kaons in a photon energy range of 0.8$-$1.1 GeV. Neutral kaons were identified by the invariant mass constructed from two charged pions emitted in the $K^{0}_{S}\toπ^{+}π^{-}$ decay channel. The differential cross sections as well as the integrated ones in the threshold photon energy region were obtained. The obtained momentum spectra were compared with a Spectator model calculation using elementary amplitudes of kaon photo-production given by recent isobar models. Present result provides, for the first time, the information on $n(γ,K^{0})Λ$ reaction which is expected to play an important role to construct models for strangeness production by the electromagnetic interaction. Experimental results show that cross section of $^{12}{\rm C}(γ,K^0)$ is of the same order to that of $^{12}{\rm C}(γ,K^+)$ and suggest that slightly backward $K^0$ angular distribution is favored in the $γn\to K^0Λ$ process.

Probing the DeltaNN component of 3He

The 3He(gamma,pi^+/- p) reactions were measured simultaneously over a tagged photon energy range of 800<E_gamma<1120 MeV, well above the Delta resonance region. An analysis was performed to kinematically isolate Delta knockout events from conventional Delta photoproduction events, and a statistically significant excess of pi+p events was identified, consistent with Delta++ knockout. Two methods were used to estimate the DeltaNN probability in the 3He ground state, corresponding to the observed knockout cross section. The first gave a lower probability limit of 1.5+/-0.6+/-0.5%; the second yielded an upper limit of about 2.6%.

Subthreshold rho^0 photoproduction on 3He

A large reduction of the rho^0 mass in the nuclear medium is reported, inferred from dipion photoproduction spectra in the 1 GeV region, for the reaction 3He(gamma,pi+ pi-)X with a 10% duty factor tagged-photon beam and the TAGX multi-particle spectrometer. The energy range covered (800 < E(gamma) < 1120 MeV) lies mostly below the free rho^0 production threshold, a region which is believed sensitive to modifications of light vector-meson properties at nuclear-matter densities. The rho^0 masses extracted from the MC fitting of the data, m*(rho^0) = 642 +/- 40, 669 +/- 32, and 682 +/- 56 MeV/c^2 for E(gamma) in the 800-880, 880-960, and 960-1040 MeV regions respectively, are independently corroborated by a measured, assumption-free, kinematical observable. This mass shift, far exceeding current mean-field driven theoretical predictions, may be suggestive of rho^0 decay within the range of the nucleonic field.
