Complete set of tree-level $2\to 2$ scattering amplitudes of ghost-free bimetric theory

Bimetric theory is an extension of general relativity that perturbatively describes one massless and one massive graviton. It admits observationally viable cosmologies, passes local tests of gravity, and provides candidates for dynamical dark energy and spin-2 dark matter. Scattering amplitudes provide a complementary probe of its consistency, e.g. through analyticity, unitarity, and causality. While the tree-level $2\to2$ amplitudes of the closely related theory of massive gravity have previously been computed and analysed, the richer amplitude structure of bimetric theory has mostly been studied for selected processes and helicity sectors. We present the complete set of tree-level $2\to2$ scattering amplitudes of ghost-free bimetric theory around proportional Minkowski backgrounds. We expand the action through quartic order in the mass eigenstates and use a computer-algebra workflow to compute all of the $199$ symmetry-inequivalent helicity amplitudes. We find a clear hierarchy: amplitudes with a single massive external state vanish, those with exactly two are independent of the nonlinear bimetric parameters, and nonlinear ghost-free parameter dependence first appears with three massive external states. Taking the massive-gravity limit yields the complete set of tree-level $2\to2$ massive gravity amplitudes, which agree exactly with previous results. Finally, all amplitudes grow with energy at most as $E^6$, corresponding to the characteristic $Λ_3$ strong-coupling scale, and this maximal growth cannot be eliminated by any nontrivial choice of the theory parameters.

Existence of ghost-eliminating constraints in multivielbein theory

We perform a Hamiltonian constraint analysis of the multivielbein theory proposed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 122 (2019) 251101]. The analysis shows that the secondary constraints have the correct form to eliminate the problematic ghost fields that generally plague theories of interacting spin-2 fields. In particular, the would-be ghost fields are eliminated by the constraints associated with the lapse functions. The subsequent constraints must then determine the ghost momenta and the remaining non-dynamical variables. To establish this, we work with a restricted set of vielbeins with equal boost functions. This allows us to explicitly compute the additional constraints that eliminate the canonical momenta associated with the ghost fields and fix the remaining non-dynamical variables. Our analysis confirms that, subject to this restriction on the boosts, the theory with N interacting vielbeins propagates 2+5(N-1) modes. This corresponds to a nonlinear theory of one massless and N-1 massive spin-2 fields free of Boulware-Deser ghost instabilities.

On the Uniqueness of Ghost-Free Multi-Gravity -- II: Constraining antisymmetrised multi spin-2 interactions

So far, only a single theory of multiple spin-2 fields is known that features genuine multi-field interactions while remaining free of Boulware-Deser-type ghost instabilities. In this paper we show that this is the most general ghost-free multi spin-2 interaction type possible. We start with the general class of multivielbein interactions containing antisymmetrised products of vielbeins, considered earlier by Hinterbichler and Rosen. We formulate a necessary condition for these theories to be ghost-free. For two vielbeins the theory parameters remain unrestricted, reproducing the ghost-free bimetric theory. But for more than two vielbeins with genuine multi-field interactions, we show that the couplings are restricted precisely to yield the known ghost-free multivielbein theory, thus establishing its uniqueness. We also show that more general interactions, constructed using the ghost-free bimetric and multivielbein potentials as building blocks, satisfy the necessary ghost-free conditions provided the associated interaction graphs have a tree structure.

Mass spectrum and linear perturbations of ghost-free multi-spin-2 theory

Motivated by the spin-2 nature of gravity, we consider a theory of N interacting spin-2 fields, formulated in terms of vielbeins which have been argued to be free of the Boulware-Deser ghost. This is the only known such theory with nontrivial multi-field interactions. We develop an all-order expansion of the vielbein in terms of the metric and Lorentz field perturbations, enabling an expansion of the action in arbitrary backgrounds to any order. The mass matrix is then analysed around proportional vielbein solutions corresponding to vacuum Einstein spacetimes. It is shown that the theory exhibits a non-tachyonic spectrum with one massless and N-1 massive spin-2 modes, regardless of the sign of the cosmological constant. While the massless mode is universal, the non-zero masses cannot generally be determined analytically, but we obtain the lower and upper bounds on each mass eigenvalue in terms of the parameters of the theory.

Black holes, gravitational waves and fundamental physics: a roadmap

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics---dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem---all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. The purpose of this work is to present a concise, yet comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the relevant fields of research, summarize important open problems, and lay out a roadmap for future progress.

Interactions of multiple spin-2 fields beyond pairwise couplings

Thus far, all known ghost-free interactions of multiple spin-2 fields have involved at most pairwise couplings of the fields, which are direct generalizations of bimetric interactions. Here we present a class of spin-2 theories with genuine multi-field interactions, and explicitly demonstrate the absence of ghost instabilities. The construction involves integrating out a nondynamical field in a theory of spin-2 fields with only pairwise ghost-free interactions. The new multi-vierbein interactions generated are not always expressible in terms of the associated metrics.

Analysis of constraints and their algebra in bimetric theory

We perform a canonical analysis of the bimetric theory in the metric formulation, computing the constraints and their algebra explicitly. In particular, we compute a secondary constraint, that has been argued to exist earlier, and show that it has the correct form to eliminate the ghost. We also identify a set of four first class constraints that generate the algebra of general covariance. The covariance algebra naturally determines a spacetime metric for the theory. However, in bimetric theory, this metric is not unique but depends on how the first class constraints are identified.

On the local structure of spacetime in ghost-free bimetric theory and massive gravity

The ghost-free bimetric theory describes interactions of gravity with another spin-2 field in terms of two Lorentzian metrics. However, if the two metrics do not admit compatible notions of space and time, the formulation of the initial value problem becomes problematic. Furthermore, the interaction potential is given in terms of the square root of a matrix which is in general nonunique and possibly nonreal. In this paper we prove that the reality of the square root matrix leads to a classification of the allowed metrics in terms of the intersections of their null cones. Then, the requirement of general covariance further constrains the allowed metrics to admit compatible notions of space and time. It also leads to a unique definition of the square root matrix. The restrictions are compatible with the equations of motion. These results ensure that the ghost-free bimetric theory can be defined unambiguously and that the two metrics always admit compatible 3+1 decompositions, at least locally. In particular, these considerations rule out certain solutions of massive gravity with locally Closed Causal Curves, which have been used to argue that the theory is acausal.

Non-linear partially massless symmetry in an SO(1,5) continuation of conformal gravity

We construct a non-linear theory of interacting spin-2 fields that is invariant under the partially massless (PM) symmetry to all orders. This theory is based on the SO(1,5) group, in analogy with the SO(2,4) formulation of conformal gravity, but has a quadratic spectrum free of ghost instabilities. The action contains a vector field associated to a local SO(2) symmetry which is manifest in the vielbein formulation of the theory. We show that, in a perturbative expansion, the SO(2) symmetry transmutes into the PM transformations of a massive spin-2 field. In this context, the vector field is crucial to circumvent earlier obstructions to an order-by-order construction of PM symmetry. Although the non-linear theory lacks enough first class constraints to remove all helicity-0 modes from the spectrum, the PM transformations survive to all orders. The absence of ghosts and strong coupling effects at the non-linear level are not addressed here.

Gauge and global symmetries of the candidate partially massless bimetric gravity

In this paper we investigate a particular ghost-free bimetric theory that exhibits the partially massless (PM) symmetry at quadratic order. At this order the global SO(1,4) symmetry of the theory is enhanced to SO(1,5). We show that this global symmetry becomes inconsistent at cubic order, in agreement with a previous calculation. Furthermore, we find that the PM symmetry of this theory cannot be extended beyond cubic order in the PM field. More importantly, it is shown that the PM symmetry cannot be extended to quartic order in any theory with one massless and one massive spin-2 fields.

Extended Weyl Invariance in a Bimetric Model and Partial Masslessness

We revisit a particular ghost-free bimetric model which is related to both partial masslessness (PM) and conformal gravity. Linearly, the model propagates six instead of seven degrees of freedom not only around de Sitter but also around flat spacetime. Nonlinearly, the equations of motion can be recast in the form of expansions in powers of curvatures, and exhibit a remarkable amount of structure. In this form, the equations are shown to be invariant under scalar gauge transformations, at least up to six orders in derivatives, the lowest order term being a Weyl scaling of the metrics. The terms at two-derivative order reproduce the usual PM gauge transformations on de Sitter backgrounds. At the four-derivative order, a potential obstruction that could destroy the symmetry is shown to vanish. This in turn guarantees the gauge invariance to at least six-orders in derivatives. This is equivalent to adding up to 10-derivative corrections to conformal gravity. More generally, we outline a procedure for constructing the gauge transformations order by order as an expansion in derivatives and comment on the validity and limitations of the procedure. We also discuss recent arguments against the existence of a PM gauge symmetry in bimetric theory and show that, at least in their present form, they are evaded by the model considered here. Finally, we argue that a bimetric approach to PM theory is more promising than one based on the existence of a fundamental PM field.

On Partially Massless Bimetric Gravity

We extend the notion of the Higuchi bound and partial masslessness to ghost-free nonlinear bimetric theories. This can be achieved in a simple way by first considering linear massive spin-2 perturbations around maximally symmetric background solutions, for which the linear gauge symmetry at the Higuchi bound is easily identified. Then, requiring consistency between an appropriate subset of these transformations and the dynamical nature of the backgrounds, fixes all but one parameter in the bimetric interaction potential. This specifies the theory up to the value of the Fierz-Pauli mass and leads to the unique candidate for nonlinear partially massless bimetric theory.

Higher Derivative Gravity and Conformal Gravity From Bimetric and Partially Massless Bimetric Theory

In this paper we establish the correspondence between ghost-free bimetric theory and a class of higher derivative gravity actions, including conformal gravity and New Massive Gravity. We also characterize the relation between the respective equations of motion and classical solutions. We illustrate that, in this framework, the spin-2 ghost of higher derivative gravity is an artifact of the truncation to a 4-derivative theory. The analysis also gives a relation between the proposed partially massless (PM) bimetric theory and conformal gravity, showing, in particular, the equivalence of their equations of motion at the 4-derivative level. For the PM bimetric theory this provides further evidence for the existence of an extra gauge symmetry and the associated loss of a propagating mode away from de Sitter backgrounds. The new symmetry is an extension of Weyl symmetry which also suggests the PM bimetric theory as a ghost-free completion of conformal gravity.

Bimetric gravity is cosmologically viable

Bimetric theory describes gravitational interactions in the presence of an extra spin-2 field. Previous work has suggested that its cosmological solutions are generically plagued by instabilities. We show that by taking the Planck mass for the second metric, $M_f$, to be small, these instabilities can be pushed back to unobservably early times. In this limit, the theory approaches general relativity with an effective cosmological constant which is, remarkably, determined by the spin-2 interaction scale. This provides a late-time expansion history which is extremely close to $Λ$CDM, but with a technically-natural value for the cosmological constant. We find $M_f$ should be no larger than the electroweak scale in order for cosmological perturbations to be stable by big-bang nucleosynthesis. We further show that in this limit the helicity-0 mode is no longer strongly-coupled at low energy scales.

Particular Solutions in Bimetric Theory and Their Implications

Ghost-free bimetric theory can describe gravity in the presence of an extra spin-2 field. We study certain aspects of dynamics in this theory: (1) It is shown that if either of the metrics is an Einstein solution then the other is always forced to be Einstein, too. For a class of bimetric models this constraint is stronger and as soon as one metric is Einstein, the other metric is forced to be proportional to it. As a consequence, the models in this class avoid a branch of pathological solutions that exhibit determinant singularities or nonlinear ghosts. These constraints persists in a generalized form when sources are included, but are destroyed in the massive gravity limit of the theory. (2) For another class of bimetric models, we show the existence of solutions that do not admit a massive gravity limit. A bimetric model that could exhibit a nonlinear version of "partially massless" symmetry belongs to both these classes. It is argued that if such a model exits, its symmetry will not survive in the massive gravity limit.

Absence of ghost in a new bimetric-matter coupling

Interactions in bimetric theory, which can describe gravity in the presence of an extra spin-2 field, are severely constrained by the requirement of the absence of the Boulware-Deser ghost instability. Recently an interesting new matter coupling was proposed in terms of a composite metric but it was claimed to reintroduce the ghost. In this paper we carry out a nonlinear Hamiltonian analysis of this new matter coupling and show that it is indeed ghost-free. The analysis involves using a new set of variables that naturally appear in the relation between the metric and vielbein formulations of bimetric theory. In terms of these variables we show that the new matter coupling does not reduce the number of constraints in bimetric theory and hence does not reintroduce the Boulware-Deser ghost.

On Consistent Theories of Massive Spin-2 Fields Coupled to Gravity

We consider the issues that arise out of interpreting the ghost-free bimetric theory as a theory of a spin-2 field coupled to gravity. This requires identifying a gravitational metric and parameterizing deviations of the resulting theory from general relativity. To this end, we first consider the most general bimetric backgrounds for which a massless and a massive spin-2 fluctuation with Fierz-Pauli mass exist. These backgrounds coincide with solutions in general relativity. Based on this, we obtain nonlinear extensions of the massive and massless spin-2 fields. The background value of the nonlinear massive field parameterizes generic deviations of the bimetric theory from GR. It is also shown that the nonlinear massless field does not have standard ghost-free matter couplings, and hence cannot represent the gravitational metric. However, an appropriate gravitational metric can still be identified in the weak gravity limit. Hence in the presence of other neutral spin-2 fields, the weak gravity limit is crucial for compatibility with general relativity. We also write down the action in terms of the nonlinear massive spin-2 field and obtain its ghost-free couplings to matter. The discussion is then generalized to multimetric theories.

Bimetric Theory and Partial Masslessness with Lanczos-Lovelock Terms in Arbitrary Dimensions

Ghost-free bimetric theories describe nonlinear interactions of massive and massless spin-2 fields and, hence, provide a natural framework for investigating the phenomenon of partial masslessness for massive spin-2 fields at the nonlinear level. In this paper we analyze the spectrum of the ghost-free bimetric theory in arbitrary dimensions. Using a recently proposed construction, we identify the candidate nonlinear partially massless (PM) theories. It is shown that, in a 2-derivative setup, nonlinear PM theories can exist only in 3 and 4 dimensions. But on adding Lanczos-Lovelock terms to the bimetric action it is found that higher derivative nonlinear PM theories also exist in higher dimensions. This is consistent with existing results on the direct construction of cubic vertices with PM gauge symmetry. We obtain the candidate nonlinear PM theories in 5, 6 and 8 dimensions but show that none exist in 7 dimensions.
