Constraints on an optical afterglow and on supernova light following the short burst GRB 050813

We report early follow-up observations of the error box of the short burst 050813 using the telescopes at Calar Alto and at Observatorio Sierra Nevada (OSN), followed by deep VLT/FORS2 I-band observations obtained under very good seeing conditions 5.7 and 11.7 days after the event. Neither a fading afterglow, nor a rising SN component was found, so the potential GRB host galaxy has not been identified based on a comparison of the two VLT images taken at different epoches. We discuss if any of the galaxies present in the original 10 arcsec XRT error circle could be the host. In any case, the optical afterglow of GRB 050813 was of very low luminosity. We conclude that all these properties are consistent with the binary compact merger hypothesis for the progenitor of GRB 050813.

VIMOS-VLT spectroscopy of the giant Ly-alpha nebulae associated with three z~2.5 radio galaxies

The morphological and spectroscopic properties of the giant (>60 kpc) Ly-alpha nebulae associated with three radio galaxies at z~2.5 (MRC 1558-003, MRC 2025-218 and MRC 0140-257) have been investigated using integral field spectroscopic data obtained with VIMOS on VLT. The morphologies are varied. The nebula of one source has a centrally peaked, rounded appearance. In the other two objects, it consists of two spatial components. The three nebulae are aligned with the radio axis within <30 deg. The total Ly-alpha luminosities are in the range (0.3-3.4) x 1e44 erg s-1. The Ly-alpha spectral profile shows strong variation through the nebulae, with FWHM values in the range ~400-1500 km s-1 and velocity shifts V~120-600 km s-1. We present an infall model which can explain successfully most Ly-alpha morphological and spectroscopic properties of the nebula associated with MRC 1558-003. This adds further support to our previous conclusion that the _quiescent_ giant nebulae associated with this and other high redshift powerful radio galaxies are in infall. A problem for this model is the difficulty to reproduce the large Ly-alpha FWHM values. We have discovered a giant (~85 kpc) Ly-alpha nebula associated with the radio galaxy MRC 0140-257 at z=2.64. It shows strikingly relaxed kinematics (FWHM< 300 km s-1 and V<120 km s-1), unique among high z (>2) radio galaxies.

An integral field spectroscopic survey for high redshift damped Lyman-alpha galaxies

We search for galaxy counterparts to damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs) at z>2 towards nine quasars, which have 14 DLAs and 8 sub-DLAs in their spectra. We use integral field spectroscopy to search for Ly-alpha emission line objects at the redshifts of the absorption systems. Besides recovering two previously confirmed objects, we find six statistically significant candidate Ly-alpha emission line objects. The candidates are identified as having wavelengths close to the DLA line where the background quasar emission is absorbed. In comparison with the six currently known Ly-alpha emitting DLA galaxies the candidates have similar line fluxes and line widths, while velocity offsets between the emission lines and systemic DLA redshifts are larger. The impact parameters are larger than 10 kpc, and lower column density systems are found at larger impact parameters. Assuming that a single gas cloud extends from the QSO line of sight to the location of the candidate emission line, we find that the average candidate DLA galaxy is surrounded by neutral gas with an exponential scale length of ~5 kpc.

ESC observations of SN 2005cf: II. Optical Spectroscopy and the high velocity features

The ESC-RTN optical spectroscopy data-set for SN 2005cf is presented and analyzed. The observations range from -11.6 and +77.3 days with respect to B-band maximum light. The evolution of the spectral energy distribution of SN 2005cf is characterized by the presence of high velocity SiII and CaII features. SYNOW synthetic spectra are used to investigate the ejecta geometry of silicon. Based on the synthetic spectra the SiII high velocity feature appears detached at 19500 km/s. We also securely establish the presence of such feature in SN 1990N, SN 1994D, SN 2002er and SN 2003du. On a morphological study both the CaII IR Triplet and H&K absorption lines of SN 2005cf show high velocity features centered around 24000 km/s. When compared with other Type Ia SNe based on the scheme presented in Benetti et al. 2005 SN 2005cf definitely belongs to the LVG group.

PPAK Integral Field Spectroscopy survey of the Orion Nebula: Data Release

We present a low-resolution spectroscopic survey of the Orion nebula which data we release for public use. In this article, we intend to show the possible applications of this dataset analyzing some of the main properties of the nebula. We perform an integral field spectroscopy mosaic of an area of ~5' X 6' centered on the Trapezium region of the nebula, including the ionization front to the south-east. The analysis of the line fluxes and line ratios of both the individual and integrated spectra allowed us to determine the main characteristics of the ionization throughtout the nebula. The final dataset comprises 8182 individual spectra, which sample each one a circular area of \~2.7" diameter. The data can be downloaded as a single row-stacked spectra fits file plus a position table or as an interpolated datacube with a final sampling of 1.5"/pixel. The integrated spectrum across the field-of-view was used to obtain the main integrated properties of the nebula, including the electron density and temperature, the dust extinction, the Halpha integrated flux (after correcting for dust reddening), and the main diagnostic line ratios. The individual spectra were used to obtain line intensity maps of the different detected lines. These maps were used to study the distribution of the ionized hydrogen, the dust extinction, the electron density and temperature, and the helium and oxygen abundance...

Morphologies and stellar populations of galaxies in the core of Abell 2218

SUMMARIZED ABSTRACT: We present a study of the stellar populations and morphologies of galaxies in the core of the galaxy cluster Abell 2218. Integral field spectroscopy was obtained using PMAS/PPAK@3.5m CAHA to obtain a complete flux limited sample of cluster members within its field-of-view (~74"X64"). In addition of 31 galaxies with known redshifts in the outer regions, we built up a final sample of 59 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members. Multiban photometry and detailed morphologies were obtained using deep images taken with the HST/ACS camera in the BVRI and z-bands. The CM diagram shows that the E-type galaxies cover the range of brighter and redder colors. A large fraction of spiral galaxies ($\sim$50%) is found. They cover a wide range in colors. This result, together with the distributions of ages, metallicities and masses, indicates that E-type galaxies are more massive and have older stellar populations, while L-type galaxies are less massive and have a wider range of stellar Our results agree with a proposed two-step scenario for the evolution of galaxies in clusters. In addition, an extremely blue merging galaxy system is found at the core, with the nominal redshift of the cluster.

HII Galaxies with 3D Spectroscopy

We present our ongoing work on integral field spectroscopy of three prototypical HII galaxies: IIZw70, IIZw71 and IZw18. The data are mainly used to study the ionized gas and stellar clusters. Our main goal is to investigate the presence of spatial variations in ionization structure indicators, physical conditions and gaseous metal abundances, in these galaxies. Maps of the relevant emission lines and a preliminary analysis of the ionization structure are presented for IIZw70.

Extended Lyman alpha emission around bright quasars

Quasars trace the most massive structures at high redshifts and their presence may influence the evolution of the massive host galaxies. We study the extended Lyman alpha emission line regions (EELRs) around seven bright, mostly radio-quiet quasars (QSOs) at 2.7<z<4.5, and compare luminosities with EELRs around radio-loud QSOs reported in the literature. Using integral field spectroscopy, we analyse the morphology and kinematics of the quiescent Lya EELRs around the QSOs. We find evidence for the presence of EELRs around four radio-quiet and one radio-loud QSO. All EELRs appear asymmetric and the optically brightest QSOs also have the brightest Lya nebulae. For the two brightest nebulae we find velocities between ~600 km s^-1 at the QSO position to ~200 km s^-1 at a distance of 3-4 arcsec from the QSO and surface flux densities up to 2-3*10^{-16} erg cm^-2 s^-1 arcsec^-2. The five EELRs have total Lya luminosities which correspond to ~0.5% of the luminosities from the QSOs broad Lya emission lines. This fraction is an order of magnitude smaller than found for EELRs around radio-loud, steep spectrum QSOs reported in the literature. While the nebulae luminosities are correlated with the QSO Lya luminosities, we find that nebulae luminosities are not correlated with the central QSO ionising fluxes. The presence of gas in the EELRs can be interpreted based on two competing scenarios: either from quasar feedback mechanisms, or from infalling matter. Apart from these two effects, the Lya flux around radio-loud objects can be enhanced due to interactions with the radio jets. The relatively fainter nebulae around radio-quiet QSOs compared to lobe-dominated radio-loud QSOs can be ascribed to this effect, or to significant differences in the environments between the two classes.

Seeing the sky through Hubble's eye: The COSMOS SkyWalker

Large, high-resolution space-based imaging surveys produce a volume of data that is difficult to present to the public in a comprehensible way. While megapixel-sized images can still be printed out or downloaded via the World Wide Web, this is no longer feasible for images with 10^9 pixels (e.g., the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys [ACS] images of the Galaxy Evolution from Morphology and SEDs [GEMS] project) or even 10^10 pixels (for the ACS Cosmic Evolution Survey [COSMOS]). We present a Web-based utility called the COSMOS SkyWalker that allows viewing of the huge ACS image data set, even through slow Internet connections. Using standard HTML and JavaScript, the application successively loads only those portions of the image at a time that are currently being viewed on the screen. The user can move within the image by using the mouse or interacting with an overview image. Using an astrometrically registered image for the COSMOS SkyWalker allows the display of calibrated world coordinates for use in science. The SkyWalker "technique" can be applied to other data sets. This requires some customization, notably the slicing up of a data set into small (e.g., 256^2 pixel) subimages. An advantage of the SkyWalker is the use of standard Web browser components; thus, it requires no installation of any software and can therefore be viewed by anyone across many operating systems.

Techniques for reducing fiber-fed and integral-field spectroscopy data: The software package R3D

This paper describes the general characteristics of raw data from fiber-fed spectrographs in general and fiber-fed IFUs in particular. The different steps of the data reduction are presented, and the techniques used to address the unusual characteristics of these data are described in detail. These techniques have been implemented in a specialized software package, R3D, developed to reduce fiber-based integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data. The package comprises a set of command-line routines adapted for each of these steps, suitable for creating pipelines. The routines have been tested against simulations, and against real data from various integral field spectrographs (PMAS, PPAK, GMOS, VIMOS and INTEGRAL). Particular attention is paid to the treatment of cross-talk.

Recurrence of the blue wing enhancements in the high ionization lines of SDSS 1004+4112 A

We present integral field spectroscopic observations of the quadruple-lensed QSO SDSS 1004+4112 taken with the fiber system INTEGRAL at the William Herschel Telescope on 2004 January 19. In May 2003 a blueward enhancement in the high ionization lines of SDSS 1004+4112A was detected and then faded. Our observations are the first to note a second event of similar characteristics less than one year after. Although initially attributed to microlensing, the resemblance among the spectra of both events and the absence of microlensing-induced changes in the continuum of component A are puzzling. The lack of a convincing explanation under the microlensing or intrinsic variability hypotheses makes the observed enhancements particularly relevant, calling for close monitoring of this object.

A jet-cloud interaction in the 3C 196 environment

Powerful radio galaxies and radio-loud quasars at high redshifts are frequently associated with extended emission-line regions (EELRs). Here we investigate the [O II] EELR around the quasar 3C 196 at z=0.871 using integral field spectroscopy. We also detect extended [Ne II] emission at a distance of about 30 kpc from the core. The emission is aligned with the radio hot spots and shows a redshifted and a blueshifted component with a velocity difference of ~800 km s^-1. The alignment effect and large velocities support the hypothesis that the EELR is caused by a jet-cloud interaction, which is furthermore indicated by the presence of a pronounced bend in the radio emission at the location of the radio hot spots. We also report observations of two other systems which do not show as clear indications of interactions. We find a weaker alignment of an [O II] EELR from the z=0.927 quasar 3C 336, while no EELR is found around the core-dominated quasar OI 363 at z=0.63.

3D Spectroscopy of Herbig-Haro objects

HH 110 and HH 262 are two Herbig-Haro jets with rather peculiar, chaotic morphology. In the two cases, no source suitable to power the jet has been detected along the outflow, at optical or radio wavelengths. Both, previous data and theoretical models, suggest that these objects are tracing an early stage of an HH jet/dense cloud interaction. We present the first results of the integral field spectroscopy observations made with the PMAS spectrophotometer (with the PPAK configuration) of these two turbulent jets. New data of the kinematics in several characteristic HH emission lines are shown. In addition, line-ratio maps have been made, suitable to explore the spatial excitation an density conditions of the jets as a function of their kinematics.

Integral Field Spectroscopy of the core of Abell 2218

We report on integral field spectrocopy observations, performed with the PPAK module of the PMAS spectrograph, covering a field-of-view of ~74''X64'' centered on the core of the galaxy cluster Abell 2218. A total of 43 objects were detected, 27 of them galaxies at the redshift of the cluster. We deblended and extracted the integrated spectra of each of the objects in the field using an adapted version of galfit for 3D spectroscopy (galfit3d). We use these spectra, in combination with morphological parameters derived from deep HST/ACS images, to study the stellar population and evolution of galaxies in the core of this cluster.

VIMOS-VLT and Spitzer observations of a radio galaxy at z=2.5

We present: 1) a kinematic and morphological study of the giant Lya nebula associated with the radio galaxy MRC2104-242 (z = 2.49) based on integral field spectroscopic VIMOS data from VLT; 2) a photometric study of the host (proto?) galaxy based on Spitzer Space Telescope data. The galaxy appears to be embedded in a giant (>120 kpc) gas reservoir that surrounds it completely. The kinematic properties of the nebula suggest that it is a rotating structure, which would imply a lower limit to the dynamical mass of ~3 x 1e11 Msun. An alternate scenario is that the gas is infalling. Such a process would be able to initiate and sustain significant central starburst activity, although it is likely to contribute with less than 10% of the total stellar mass of the galaxy. The near- to mid-IR spectral energy distribution of the radio galaxy suggests the existence of a reddened, E(B-V)=0.4(+/-)0 .1$, evolved stellar population of age >~ 1.8 Gyr and mass 5(+/-)2 x 1e11 Msun. The implied formation redshift is z_f >~ 6. This stellar mass is similar to the stellar masses found for massive early-type galaxies at z~2 in deep, near-infrared surveys.

GEMS: which galaxies dominate the z~0.7 ultraviolet luminosity density?

We combine high-resolution images from GEMS with redshifts and spectral energy distributions from COMBO-17 to explore the morphological types of galaxies that dominate the z~0.7 UV luminosity density. We analysed rest-frame 280 nm and V-band luminosities of 1483 galaxies with 0.65<z< 0.75, combining these with visual morphological classifications from F850LP images (approximately rest-frame V-band) taken with HST/ACS on the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. We derive UV luminosity functions and j_280 luminosity densities for spheroid-dominated galaxies, spiral galaxies, Magellanic irregulars, and clearly-interacting galaxies with morphologies suggestive of ongoing major mergers. We check the reliability of GEMS morphologies against the deeper GOODS images and quantify an incompleteness of the GEMS merger identification at the faint end. We derive the fractions of the global UV luminosity density j_280 originating from the galaxy types, and find that spiral galaxies and Magellanic irregulars dominate with about 40% each. Interacting and merging galaxies account for roughly 20% of j_280, while the contribution of early types is negligible. These results imply that the strong decline in the UV luminosity density of the Universe observed from z~1 until today is dominated by the decreasing UV luminosities of normal spiral galaxies, accompanied by the migration of UV-luminous star formation in irregular galaxies to systems of progressively lower mass and luminosity.
