Final-state interactions in the response of nuclear matter

Final-state interactions in the response of a many-body system to an external probe delivering large momentum are normally described using the eikonal approximation, for the trajectory of the struck particle, and the frozen approximation, for the positions of the spectators. We propose a generalization of this scheme, in which the initial momentum of the struck particle is explicitly taken into account. Numerical calculations of the nuclear matter response at 1 $< |{\bf q}| <$ 2 GeV/c show that the inclusion of this momentum dependence leads to a sizable effect in the low energy tail. Possible implications for the analysis of existing electron-nucleus scattering data are discussed.

$Q^2$-dependence of backward pion multiplicity in neutrino-nucleus interactions

The production of pions emitted backward in inelastic neutrino-nucleus interactions is analyzed within the impulse approximation in the framework of the dual parton model. We focus on the $Q^2$-dependence of the multiplicity of negative pions, normalized to the total cross section of the reaction $ν+ A \to μ+ X$. The inclusion of planar (one-Reggeon exchange) and cylindrical (one-Pomeron exchange) graphs leads to a multiplicity that decreases as $Q^2$ increases, in agreement with recent measurements carried out at CERN by the NOMAD collaboration. A realistic treatment of the high momentum tail of the nucleon distribution in a nucleus also allows for a satisfactory description of the semi-inclusive spectrum of backward pions.

Spin susceptibility of neutron matter at zero temperature

The Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo method is applied to compute the spin susceptibility and the compressibility of neutron matter at zero temperature. Results are given for realistic interactions which include both a two-body potential of the Argonne type and the Urbana IX three-body potential. Simulations have been carried out for about 60 neutrons. We find an overall reduction of the spin susceptibilty by about a factor 3 with respect to the Pauli susceptibility for a wide range of densities. Results for the compressibility of neutron matter are also presented and compared with other available estimates obtained for semirealistic nucleon-nucleon interactions by using other techniques.

Deuteron distribution in nuclear matter

We analyze the properties of deuteron-like structures in infinite, correlated nuclear matter, described by a realistic hamiltonian containing the Urbana $v_{14}$ two-nucleon and the Urbana TNI many-body potentials. The distribution of neutron-proton pairs, carrying the deuteron quantum numbers, is obtained as a function of the total momentum by computing the overlap between the nuclear matter in its ground state and the deuteron wave functions in correlated basis functions theory. We study the differences between the S- and D-wave components of the deuteron and those of the deuteron-like pair in the nuclear medium. The total number of deuteron type pairs is computed and compared with the predictions of Levinger's quasideuteron model. The resulting Levinger's factor in nuclear matter at equilibrium densityis 11.63. We use the local density approximation to estimate the Levinger's factor for heavy nuclei, obtaining results which are consistent with the available experimental data from photoreactions.

Ambiguities in the implementation of the impulse approximation for the response of many-fermion systems

Within the impulse approximation the response of a many body system at large momentum tranfer can be written in a simple and transparent form, allowing to directly relate the inclusive scattering cross section to the properties of the target ground state. Although the physics assumptions underlying impulse approximation are well defined, their implementation involves ambiguities that may cause significant differences in the calculated responses. We show that, while minimal use of the impulse approximation assumptions naturally leads to write the response in terms of the target spectral function, the widely used alternative definition in terms of the momentum distribution involves a more extended use of the same assumtpions. The difference between the responses resulting from the two procedures is illustrated by two examples.

Nuclear structure functions and off-shell corrections

The $n$-th moments of the nuclear structure function $F_2^A(x,Q^2)$ are analyzed using the off-shell kinematics appropriate to describe deep inelastic electron-nucleus scattering within the impulse approximation. It is shown that off-shell effects are sensitive to the form of both the nuclear spectral function and the nucleon structure function $F_2^N(x,Q^2)$, and can be as large as $\sim 10%$ at Q$^2~\sim~2$~(GeV/c)$^2$.

Phase oscillations in superfluid 3He-B weak links

Oscillations in quantum phase about a mean value of $π$, observed across micropores connecting two \helium baths, are explained in a Ginzburg-Landau phenomenology. The dynamics arises from the Josephson phase relation, the interbath continuity equation, and helium boundary conditions. The pores are shown to act as Josephson tunnel junctions, and the dynamic variables are the inter bath phase difference and fractional difference in superfluid density at micropores. The system maps onto a non-rigid, momentum-shortened pendulum, with inverted-orientation oscillations about a vertical tilt angle $ϕ= π$, and other modes are predicted.

Josephson effects in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose an experiment that would demonstrate the ``dc'' and ``ac'' Josephson effects in two weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates. We consider a time-dependent barrier, moving adiabatically across the trapping potential. The phase dynamics are governed by a ``driven-pendulum'' equation, as in current-driven superconducting Josephson junctions. At a critical velocity of the barrier (proportional to the critical tunneling current), there is a sharp transition between the ``dc'' and ``ac'' regimes. The signature is a sudden jump of a large fraction of the relative condensate population. Analytical predictions are compared with a full numerical solution of the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, in an experimentally realistic situation.

Backward hadron production in neutrino-nucleus interactions

The production of backward pions in lepton-nucleus collisions is analyzed. We show that a large yield of high momentum backward pions can be explained by the Regge asymptotic of the distribution of nucleons carrying a large momentum fraction in the nuclear target. The calculated spectra of pions emitted in the neutrino + Ne --> muon + pion + X reaction are in satisfactory agreement with the available experimental data.

Coherent oscillations between two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates: Josephson effects, $π$-oscillations, and macroscopic quantum self trapping

We discuss the coherent atomic oscillations between two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. The weak link is provided by a laser barrier in a (possibly asymmetric) double-well trap or by Raman coupling between two condensates in different hyperfine levels. The Boson Josephson Junction (BJJ) dynamics is described by the two-mode non-linear Gross-Pitaevskii equation, that is solved analytically in terms of elliptic functions. The BJJ, being a $neutral$, isolated system, allows the investigations of new dynamical regimes for the phase difference across the junction and for the population imbalance, that are not accessible with Superconductor Josephson Junctions (SJJ). These include oscillations with either, or both of the following properties: 1) the time-averaged value of the phase is equal to $π$ ($π-phase$ oscillations); 2) the average population imbalance is nonzero, in states with ``macroscopic quantum self-trapping'' (MQST). The (non-sinusoidal) generalization of the SJJ `ac' and `plasma' oscillations and the Shapiro resonance can also be observed. We predict the collapse of experimental data (corresponding to different trap geometries and total number of condensate atoms) onto a single universal curve, for the inverse period of oscillations. Analogies with Josephson oscillations between two weakly coupled reservoirs of $^3$He-B and the internal Josephson effect in $^3$He-A are also discussed.

Macroscopic Angular Momentum States of Bose-Einstein Condensates in Toroidal Traps

We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of $N$ atoms of repulsive interaction $\sim U_0$, in an elliptical trap, axially pierced by a Gaussian-intensity laser beam, forming an effective (quasi-2D) toroidal trap with minimum at radial distance $ρ= ρ_p$. The macroscopic angular momentum states $Ψ_l(ρ,θ) \sim \sqrt{N}Φ_l(ρ) e^{i l θ}$ for integer $l$ spread up to $ρ\lesssim ρ_{max} \sim (NU_0)^{1/4} \gg ρ_p$. The spreading lowers rotational energies, so estimated low metastability barriers can support large $l \lesssim l_{max} \sim (NU_0)^{1/4}, \lesssim 10$ for typical parameters. The $l$-dependent density profile $|Φ_l(ρ)|^2 - |Φ_0(ρ)|^2$ is a signature of BEC rotation. Results are insensitive to off-axis laser displacements $ρ_0$, for $ρ_0/ρ_{max} \ll 1$.

Quantum Coherent Atomic Tunneling between Two Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study the coherent atomic tunneling between two zero-temperature Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) confined in a double-well magnetic trap. Two Gross-Pitaevskii equations for the self-interacting BEC amplitudes, coupled by a transfer matrix element, describe the dynamics in terms of the inter-well phase-difference and population imbalance. In addition to the anharmonic generalization of the familiar $ac$ Josephson effect and plasma oscillations occurring in superconductor junctions, the non-linear BEC tunneling dynamics sustains a self-maintained population imbalance: a novel "macroscopic quantum self-trapping effect".

Q**2-dependence of deep inelastic lepton scattering off nuclear targets

Deep inelastic scattering of leptons off nuclear targets is analized within the convolution model taking into account nucleon-nucleon correlations. We show that in the nuclear medium nucleons are distributed according to a function that exhibits a sizeable Q**2-dependence and reduces to the ordinary light-cone distribution in the Bjorken limit. At Q**2 < 50 (GeV/c)**2 and x > 1 this Q**2-dependence turns out to be stronger than the one associated with the nucleon structure function, predicted by pertubative quantum chromodynamics.

On the missing momentum dependence of the color transparency effects in (e,e'p) scattering

We explore the missing momentum dependence of the CT effects in quasielastic (e,e'p) scattering. We develop the coupled-channel multiple-scattering theory (CCMST) description of final-state interaction including both the coherent and incoherent rescatterings of the ejectile state. We demonstrate that the contribution of the off-diagonal incoherent rescattering does not vanish at low Q^{2} which is a novel correction to the conventional Glauber theory evaluation of nuclear transparency. We comment on the nontrivial impact of this correction on the onset of CT. The sensitivity of the onset of CT to the 3q-nucleon reggeon amplitudes is discussed for the first time. We present numerical results for nuclear transparency as a function of the missing momentum for exclusive (e,e'p) reaction in the kinematical region of Q^{2} \le 40 GeV^{2} and p_{m} \le 250$ MeV/c. Our evaluations show that at Q^{2}\sim 10 CT effects are substantial only in antiparallel kinematics at p_{m,z}\sim -250 MeV/c. The effect is enhanced on light nuclei and could be observed in a high precision experiment.

Glauber theory of initial- and final-state interactions in (p,2p) scattering

We develop the Glauber theory description of initial- and final-state interactions (IFSI) in quasielastic A(p,2p) scattering. We study the IFSI-distortion effects both for the inclusive and exclusive conditions. In inclusive reaction the important new effect is an interaction between the two sets of the trajectories which enter the calculation of IFSI-distorted one-body density matrix for inclusive (p,2p) scattering and are connected with incoherent elastic rescatterings of the initial and final protons on spectator nucleons. We demonstrate that IFSI-distortions of the missing momentum distribution are large over the whole range of missing momentum both for inclusive and exclusive reactions and affect in a crucial way the interpretation of the BNL data on (p,2p) scattering. Our numerical results show that in the region of missing momentum $p_{m}\lsim 100-150$ MeV/c the incoherent IFSI increase nuclear transparency by 5-10\%. The incoherent IFSI become dominant at $p_{m}\gsim 200$ MeV/c.

Path Integral Variational Methods for Strongly Correlated Systems

We introduce a new approach to highly correlated systems which generalizes the Fermi Hypernetted Chain and Correlated Basis Function techniques. While the latter approaches can only be applied to systems for which a nonrelativistic wave function can be defined, the new approach is based on the variation of a trial hamiltonian within a path integral framework and thus can also be applied to relativistic and field theoretical problems. We derive a diagrammatic scheme for the new approach and show how a particular choice of the trial hamiltonian corresponds exactly to the use of a Jastrow correlated ansatz for the wave function in the Fermi Hypernetted Chain approach. We show how our new approach can be used to find upper bounds to ground state energies in systems which the FHNC cannot handle, including those described by an energy-dependent effective hamiltonian. We demonstrate our approach by applying it to a quantum field theoretical system of interacting pions and nucleons.

Model calculations of doubly closed shell nuclei in CBF theory III. j-j coupling and isospin dependence

Correlated Basis Function theory and Fermi Hypernetted Chain technique are extended to study medium-heavy, doubly closed shell nuclei in j-j coupling scheme, with different single particle wave functions for protons and neutrons and isospin dependent two-body correlations. Central semirealistic interactions are used. Ground state energies, one-body densities, distribution functions and momentum distributions are calculated for 12C, 16O, 40Ca, 48Ca and 208Pb nuclei. The values of the ground state energies provided by isospin dependent correlations are lower than those obtained with isospin independent correlations. In finite nuclear systems, the two--body Euler equations provide correlation functions variationally more effective than those obtained with the same technique in infinite nuclear matter.
