dc-biased stationary transport in the absence of dissipation

We obtain stationary transport in a Hamiltonian system with ac driving in the presence of a dc bias. A particle in a periodic potential under the influence of a time-periodic field possesses a mixed phase space with regular and chaotic components. An additional external dc bias allows to separate effectively these structures. We show the existence of a stationary current which originates from the persisting invariant manifolds (regular islands, periodic orbits, and cantori). The transient dynamics of the accelerated chaotic domain separates fast chaotic motion from ballistic type trajectories which stick to the vicinity of the invariant submanifold. Experimental studies with cold atoms in laser-induced optical lattices are ideal candidates for the observation of these unexpected findings.

Resonant light-light interaction in slab waveguides: angular filters and spectral hole burning

We consider the process of low-power light scattering by optical solitons in a slab waveguide with homogeneous and inhomogeneous refractive index core. We observe resonant reflection (Fano resonance) as well as resonant transmission of light by optical solitons at certain incident angles. The resonance position can be controlled experimentally by changing the soliton intensity and the relative frequency detuning between the soliton and the probe light beams.

q-Breathers in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chains: existence, localization and stability

The Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) problem consists of the nonequipartition of energy among normal modes of a weakly anharmonic atomic chain model. In the harmonic limit each normal mode corresponds to a periodic orbit in phase space and is characterized by its wave number q. We continue normal modes from the harmonic limit into the FPU parameter regime and obtain persistence of these periodic orbits, termed here q-Breathers (QB). They are characterized by time periodicity, exponential localization in the q-space of normal modes and linear stability up to a size-dependent threshold amplitude. Trajectories computed in the original FPU setting are perturbations around these exact QB solutions. The QB concept is applicable to other nonlinear lattices as well.

Resonant light scattering by optical solitons

We consider the process of light scattering by optical solitons in a planar waveguide with homogeneous and inhomogeneous refractive index core. We observe resonant reflection (Fano resonances) as well as resonant transmission of light by optical solitons. All resonant effects can be controlled in experiment by changing the soliton intensity.

q-Breathers and the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam Problem

The Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) paradox consists of the nonequipartition of energy among normal modes of a weakly anharmonic atomic chain model. In the harmonic limit each normal mode corresponds to a periodic orbit in phase space and is characterized by its wave number $q$. We continue normal modes from the harmonic limit into the FPU parameter regime and obtain persistence of these periodic orbits, termed here $q$-Breathers (QB). They are characterized by time periodicity, exponential localization in the $q$-space of normal modes and linear stability up to a size-dependent threshold amplitude. Trajectories computed in the original FPU setting are perturbations around these exact QB solutions. The QB concept is applicable to other nonlinear lattices as well.

Nonlinear response and discrete breather excitation in driven micro-mechanical cantilever arrays

We explain the origin of the generation of discrete breathers (DBs) in experiments on damped and driven micromechanical cantilever arrays (M.Sato et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 90}, 044102, 2003). Using the concept of the nonlinear response manifold (NLRM) we provide a systematic way to find the optimal parameter regime in damped and driven lattices where DBs exist. Our results show that DBs appear via a new instability of the NLRM different from the anticipated modulational instability (MI) known for conservative systems. We present several ways of exciting DBs, and compare also to experimental studies of exciting and destroying DBs in antiferromagnetic layered systems.

Energy Flow Puzzle of Soliton Ratchets

We study the mechanism of directed energy transport for soliton ratchets. The energy flow appears due to the progressive motion of a soliton (kink) which is an energy carrier. However, the energy current formed by internal system deformations (the total field momentum) is zero. We solve the underlying puzzle by showing that the energy flow is realized via an {\it inhomogeneous} energy exchange between the system and the external ac driving. Internal kink modes are unambiguously shown to be crucial for that transport process to take place. We also discuss effects of spatial discretization and combination of ac and dc external drivings.

Resonant plasmon scattering by discrete breathers in Josephson junction ladders

We study the resonant scattering of plasmons (linear waves) by discrete breather excitations in Josephson junction ladders. We predict the existence of Fano resonances, and find them by computing the resonant vanishing of the transmission coefficient. We propose an experimental setup of detecting these resonances, and conduct numerical simulations which demonstrate the possibility to observe Fano resonances in the plasmon scattering by discrete breathers in Josephson junction ladders.

Discrete breathers in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattices

The Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) paradox was observed fifty years ago. The surprising finding was a localization of energy in the reciprocal q-space of a model with discrete translational invariance, despite the presence of interaction between extended normal modes. Thirty three years later Takeno, Kisoda and Sievers reported on the observation of energy localization in real space for the same class of FPU models, which is as surprising since these excitations, called discrete breathers or intrinsic localized modes, violate the underlying discrete translational symmetry of the model. The past decade has whitnessed a tremendous progress in the theory and applications of discrete breathers, which goes much beyond the scope of the original FPU frame. We use the modern theory of discrete breathers to investigate the properties of these solutions in FPU models, paying special attention to the issues of stability, resonances, wave scattering and energy thresholds.

Isochronism and tangent bifurcation of band edge modes in Hamiltonian lattices

In {\em Physica D} {\bf 91}, 223 (1996), results were obtained regarding the tangent bifurcation of the band edge modes ($q=0,π$) of nonlinear Hamiltonian lattices made of $N$ coupled oscillators. Introducing the concept of {\em partial isochronism} which characterises the way the frequency of a mode, $ω$, depends on its energy, $ε$, we generalize these results and show how the bifurcation energies of these modes are intimately connected to their degree of isochronism. In particular we prove that in a lattice of coupled purely isochronous oscillators ($ω(ε)$ strictly constant), the in-phase mode ($q=0$) never undergoes a tangent bifurcation whereas the out-of-phase mode ($q=π$) does, provided the strength of the nonlinearity in the coupling is sufficient. We derive a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation governing the slow modulations of small-amplitude band edge modes and show that its nonlinear exponent is proportional to the degree of isochronism of the corresponding orbits. This equation may be seen as a link between the tangent bifurcation of band edge modes and the possible emergence of localized modes such as discrete breathers.

Classical and quantum radiation of perturbed discrete breathers

We show that the linearized phase space flow around a discrete breather solution is not capable of generating persistent energy flow away from the breather even in the case of instabilities of extended states. This holds both for the classical and quantized description of the flow. The main reason for that is the parametric driving the breather provides to the flow. Corresponding scaling arguments are derived for both classical and quantum cases. Numerical simulations of the classical flow support our findings.

Spin filters with Fano dots

We compute the zero bias conductance of electrons through a single ballistic channel weakly coupled to a side quantum dot with Coulomb interaction. In contrast to the standard setup which is designed to measure the transport through the dot, the channel conductance reveals Coulomb blockade dips rather then peaks due to the Fano-like backscattering. At zero temperature the Kondo effect leads to the formation of broad valleys of small conductance corresponding to an odd number of electrons on the dot. By applying a magnetic field in the dot region we find two dips corresponding to a total suppression in the conductance of spins up and down separated by an energy of the order of the Coulomb interaction. This provides a possibility of a perfect spin filter.

AC field induced quantum rectification effect in tunnel junctions

We study the appearance of directed current in tunnel junctions, quantum ratchet effect, in the presence of an external ac field f(t). The current is established in a one-dimensional discrete inhomogeneous "tight-binding model". By making use of a symmetry analysis we predict the right choice of f(t) and obtain the directed current as a difference between electron transmission coefficients in opposite directions, $ΔT = T^{LR}-T^{RL}$. Numerical simulations confirm the predictions of the symmetry analysis and moreover, show that the directed current can be drastically increased by a proper choice of frequency and amplitudes of the ac field f(t).

Resonant scattering of solitons

We study the scattering of solitons in the nonlinear Schroedinger equation on local inhomogeneities which may give rise to resonant transmission and reflection. In both cases, we derive resonance conditions for the soliton's velocity. The analytical predictions are tested numerically in regimes characterized by various time scales. Special attention is paid to intermode interactions and their effect on coherence, decoherence and dephasing of plane-wave modes which build up the soliton.

Fano resonances with discrete breathers

A theoretical study of linear wave scattering by time-periodic spatially localized excitations (discrete breathers (DB)) is presented. We obtain that the wave propagation is strongly influenced by a local coupling between an open and closed channels generated by the DB. A peculiar effect of total reflection occurs due to a Fano resonance when a localized state originating from closed channels resonates with the open channel. For the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger chain we provide with an analytical result for the frequency dependence of the transmission coefficient, including the possibility of resonant reflection. We extend the analysis to chains of weakly coupled anharmonic oscillators and discuss the relevance of the effect for electronic transport spectroscopy of mesoscopic systems.

On the correllation effect in Peierls-Hubbard chains

We reexamine the dimerization, the charge and the spin gaps of a half-filled Peierls-Hubbard chain by means of the incremental expansion technique. Our numerical findings are in significant quantitative conflict with recently obtained results by M. Sugiura and Y. Suzumura [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. v. 71 (2002) 697] based on a bosonization and a renormalization group method, especially with respect to the charge gap. Their approach seems to be valid only in the weakly correlated case.

Wave scattering by discrete breathers

We present a theoretical study of linear wave scattering in one-dimensional nonlinear lattices by intrinsic spatially localized dynamic excitations or discrete breathers. These states appear in various nonlinear systems and present a time-periodic localized scattering potential for plane waves. We consider the case of elastic one-channel scattering, when the frequencies of incoming and transmitted waves coincide, but the breather provides with additional spatially localized ac channels whose presence may lead to various interference patterns. The dependence of the transmission coefficient on the wave number q and the breather frequency Omega_b is studied for different types of breathers: acoustic and optical breathers, and rotobreathers. We identify several typical scattering setups where the internal time dependence of the breather is of crucial importance for the observed transmission properties.

Broken space-time symmetries and mechanisms of rectification of ac fields by nonlinear (non)adiabatic response

We consider low-dimensional dynamical systems exposed to a heat bath and to additional ac fields. The presence of these ac fields may lead to a breaking of certain spatial or temporal symmetries which in turn cause nonzero averages of relevant observables. Nonlinear (non)adiabatic response is employed to explain the effect. We consider a case of a particle in a periodic potential as an example and discuss the relevant symmetry breakings and the mechanisms of rectification of the current in such a system.
