Microwave Properties of Ba(0.6)K(0.4)BiO(3) Crystals

We report on field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance at 9.6 GHz of Ba(0.6)K(0.4)BiO(3) crystals. Energy losses have been investigated as a function of the static magnetic field in the range of temperatures 4.2 K - Tc. By analyzing the experimental results in the framework of the Coffey and Clem model we determine the temperature dependence of the first-penetration field, upper critical field and depinning frequency. The results show that the pinning energy of this bismuthate superconductor is weaker than those of cuprates.

Microwave Response of Ceramic MgB2 Samples

The microwave response of ceramic MgB2 has been investigated as a function of temperature and external magnetic field by two different techniques: microwave surface impedance and second-harmonic emission measurements. The measurements of the surface resistance have shown that microwave losses in MgB2 are strongly affected by the magnetic field in the whole range of temperatures below Tc, even for relatively low field values. The results have been accounted for in the framework of the Coffey and Clem model hypothesizing that in different temperature ranges the microwave current induces fluxons to move in different regimes. In particular, the results at temperatures close to Tc have been quantitatively justified by assuming that fluxons move in the flux-flow regime and taking into account the anisotropy of the upper critical field. At low temperatures, the field dependence of the surface resistance follows the law expected in the pinning limit; however, an unusually enhanced field variation has been detected, which could be due to the peculiar fluxon structure of MgB2, related to the presence of the two gaps. The measurements of the second-harmonic signals have highlighted several mechanisms responsible for the nonlinear response. At low magnetic fields and low temperatures, the nonlinear response is due to processes involving weak links. At temperatures close to Tc, a further contribution to the harmonic emission is present; it arises from the modulation of the order parameter by the microwave field and gives rise to a peak in the temperature dependence of the harmonic-signal intensity.

Fluxon dynamics by microwave surface resistance measurements in MgB2

Field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance, Rs(H), have been investigated in high-density ceramic MgB2. At low temperatures, several peculiarities of the Rs(H) curves cannot be justified in the framework of models reported in the literature. We suggest that they are ascribable to the unconventional vortex structure in MgB2, related to the presence of two gaps. On the contrary, the results near Tc can be accounted for by the Coffey and Clem model, with fluxons moving in the flux-flow regime, provided that the anisotropy of the upper critical field is taken into due account.

Microwave Surface Resistance and Upper-Critical-Field Anisotropy of MgB2 Superconductor

The field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance are investigated in two different samples of powdered MgB2. The experimental results can be justified in the framework of the Coffey and Clem model with fluxons moving in the flux-flow regime, provided that the anisotropy of the upper critical field is taken into due account. Assuming the angular dependence of the upper critical field expected from the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory, we determine the anisotropy factor by fitting the experimental data of the field dependence of the microwave surface resistance. We show that the anisotropy factor is constant in a range of temperatures of about 3 K below Tc and it takes on different values for the two samples, even though they have similar shape.

Characteristic features of the temperature dependence of the surface impedance in polycrystalline MgB$_2$ samples

The real $R_s(T)$ and imaginary $X_s(T)$ parts of the surface impedance $Z_s(T)=R_s(T)+iX_s(T)$ in polycrystalline MgB$_2$ samples of different density with the critical temperature $T_c\approx 38$ K are measured at the frequency of 9.4 GHz and in the temperature range $5\le T<200$ K. The normal skin-effect condition $R_s(T)=X_s(T)$ at $T\ge T_c$ holds only for the samples of the highest density with roughness sizes not more than 0.1 $μ$m. For such samples extrapolation $T\to 0$ of the linear at $T<T_c/2$ temperature dependences $λ_L(T)=X_s(T)/ωμ_0$ and $R_s(T)$ results in values of the London penetration depth $λ_L(0)\approx 600$ Åand residual surface resistance $R_{res}\approx 0.8$ m$Ω$. In the entire temperature range the dependences $R_s(T)$ and $X_s(T)$ are well described by the modified two-fluid model.
