Structured x-ray beams from twisted electrons by inverse Compton scattering of laser light

The inverse Compton scattering of laser light on high-energetic twisted electrons is investigated with the aim to construct spatially structured x-ray beams. In particular, we analyze how the properties of the twisted electrons, such as the topological charge and aperture angle of the electron Bessel beam, affects the energy and angular distribution of scattered x-rays. We show that with suitably chosen initial twisted electron states one can synthesize tailor-made x-ray beam profiles with a well-defined spatial structure, in a way not possible with ordinary plane-wave electron beams.

Spins, Electromagnetic Moments, and Isomers of 107-129Cd

The neutron-rich isotopes of cadmium up to the N=82 shell closure have been investigated by high-resolution laser spectroscopy. Deep-UV excitation at 214.5 nm and radioactive-beam bunching provided the required experimental sensitivity. Long-lived isomers are observed in 127Cd and 129Cd for the first time. One essential feature of the spherical shell model is unambiguously confirmed by a linear increase of the 11/2- quadrupole moments. Remarkably, this mechanism is found to act well beyond the h11/2 shell.

Parametrization of the angular correlation and degree of linear polarization in two-photon decays of hydrogen-like ions

The two-photon decay in hydrogen-like ions is investigated within the framework of second order perturbation theory and Dirac's relativistic equation. Special attention is paid to the angular correlation of the emitted photons as well as to the degree of linear polarization of one of the two photons, if the second is just observed under given angles. Expressions for the angular correlation and the degree of linear polarization are expanded in terms of $\cosθ$-polynomials, whose coefficients depend on the atomic number and the energy sharing of the emitted photons. The effects of including higher (electric and magnetic) multipoles upon the emitted photon pairs beyond the electric-dipole approximation are also discussed. Calculations of the coefficients are performed for the transitions $2s_{1/2}\rightarrow1s_{1/2}$, $3d_{3/2}\rightarrow1s_{1/2}$ and $3d_{5/2}\rightarrow1s_{1/2}$, along the entire hydrogen isoelectronic sequence ($1\le Z \le 100$).

Magnetic Sublevel Population and Alignment for the Excitation of H- and He-like Uranium in Relativistic Collisions

We have measured the alignment of the L-shell magnetic-substates following the K-shell excitation of hydrogen- and helium-like uranium in relativistic collisions with a low-Z gaseous target. Within this experiment the population distribution for the L-shell magnetic sublevels has been obtained via an angular differential study of the decay photons associated with the subsequent de-excitation process. The results show a very distinctive behavior for the H- and He-like heavy systems. In particular for $K \rightarrow L$ excitation of He-like uranium, a considerable alignment of the L-shell levels was observed. A comparison of our experimental findings with recent rigorous relativistic predictions provides a good qualitative and a reasonable quantitative agreement, emphasizing the importance of the magnetic-interaction and many-body effects in the strong-field domain of high-Z ions.

Angular correlations in the two--photon decay of helium--like heavy ions

The two-photon decay of heavy, helium-like ions is investigated based on second-order perturbation theory and Dirac's relativistic equation. Special attention has been paid to the angular emission of the two photons, i.e., how the angular correlation function depends on the shell structure of the ions in their initial and final states. Moreover, the effects from the (electric and magnetic) non-dipole terms in the expansion of the electron-photon interaction are discussed. Detailed calculations have been carried out for the two-photon decay of the $1s2s \, ^1S_0$, $1s2s \, ^3S_1$ and $1s2p \, ^3P_0$ states of helium-like xenon Xe$^{52+}$, gold Au$^{77+}$ and uranium U$^{90+}$ ions.

Electron loss of fast heavy projectiles in collision with neutral targets

The multiple electron loss of heavy projectiles in fast ion-atom collisions has been studied in the framework of the sudden perturbation approximation. Especially, a model is developed to calculate the cross sections for the loss of any number of electrons from the projectile ion, including the ionization of a single electron and up to the complete stripping of the projectile. For a given collision system, that is specified by the (type and charge state of the) projectile and target as well as the collision energy, in fact, the experimental cross sections for just three final states of the projectile are required by this model in order to predict the loss of any number, $N$, of electrons for the same collision system, or for any similar system that differs only in the energy or the initial charge state of the projectile ion. The model is simple and can be utilized for both, the projectile and target ionization, and without that large computer resources are requested. Detailed computation have been carried out for the multiple electron loss of Xe$^{18+}$ and U$^{6+,\, 10+,\, 28+}$ projectiles in collision with neutral Ar and Ne gas targets.

Early onset of ground-state deformation in the neutron-deficient polonium isotopes

In-source resonant ionization laser spectroscopy of the even-$A$ polonium isotopes $^{192-210,216,218}$Po has been performed using the $6p^37s$ $^5S_2$ to $6p^37p$ $^5P_2$ ($λ=843.38$ nm) transition in the polonium atom (Po-I) at the CERN ISOLDE facility. The comparison of the measured isotope shifts in $^{200-210}$Po with a previous data set allows to test for the first time recent large-scale atomic calculations that are essential to extract the changes in the mean-square charge radius of the atomic nucleus. When going to lighter masses, a surprisingly large and early departure from sphericity is observed, which is only partly reproduced by Beyond Mean Field calculations.

Multipartite W states for chains of atoms conveyed through an optical cavity

We propose and work out a scheme to generate the entangled W states for a chain of N four-level atoms which are transported through an optical cavity by means of an optical lattice. This scheme is based on the combined laser-cavity mediated interaction between distant and equally separated atoms and works in a completely deterministic way for qubits encoded by two hyperfine levels of the atoms. Only two parameters, namely the distance between the atoms and the velocity of the chain, determine the effective interaction among the atoms and, therefore, the degree of entanglement that is obtained for the overall chain of N qubits. In particular, we work out the parameter regions for which the W states are generated most reliably for chains of N = 2,3,4 and 5 atoms. In addition, we analyze the sensitivity in the formation of entanglement for such chains of qubits due to uncertainties produced by the oscillations of atoms in optical lattices.

Bound-Free Electron-Positron Pair Production in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

The bound-free electron-positron pair production is considered for relativistic heavy ion collisions. In particular, cross sections are calculated for the pair production with the simultaneous capture of the electron into the 1s ground state of one of the ions and for energies that are relevant for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Colliders (LHC). In the framework of perturbation theory, we applied Monte-Carlo integration techniques to compute the lowest-order Feynman diagrams amplitudes by using Darwin wave functions for the bound states of the elec- trons and Sommerfeld-Maue wave functions for the continuum states of the positrons. Calculations were performed especially for the collision of Au + Au at 100 GeV/nucleon and Pb + Pb at 3400 GeV/nucleon.

Control of entanglement and two-qubit quantum gates with atoms crossing a detuned optical cavity

A scheme is proposed to generate an entangled state between two (Lambda-type) four-level atoms that interact effectively by means of a detuned optical cavity and a laser beam that acts perpendicularly to the cavity axis. It is shown how the degree of entanglement for two atoms passing through the cavity can be controlled by manipulating their velocity and the (initial) distance between the atoms. In addition, three realistic schemes are suggested to implement the two-qubit gates within the framework of the suggested atom-cavity-laser setup, namely, the i-swap gate, controlled-Z gate and the controlled-NOT gate. For all these schemes, we analyze and discuss the atomic velocities and inter-atomic distances for which these gates are realized most reliably.

Generation of two-dimensional cluster states by using high-finesse bimodal cavities

We propose two novel schemes to generate the two-dimensional 2xN and 3xN cluster states by using a chain of (two-level) Rydberg atoms in the framework of cavity QED. These schemes work in a completely deterministic way and are based on the resonant interaction of the atoms in a chain with a bimodal cavity that supports two independent modes of the photon field. We demonstrate that a 2xN cluster state can be generated efficiently with only a single bimodal cavity, while two such cavities are needed in order to construct a 3xN cluster state. It is shown, moreover, how these schemes can be extended towards the generation of MxN two-dimensional cluster states.

Polarization studies on the two-step radiative recombination of highly-charged, heavy ions

The radiative recombination of a free electron into an excited state of a bare, high-Z ion is studied, together with its subsequent decay, within the framework of the density matrix theory and Dirac's relativistic equation. Special attention is paid to the polarization and angular correlations between the recombination and the decay photons. In order to perform a systematic analysis of these correlations the general expression for the double-differential recombination cross section is obtained by making use of the resonance approximation. Based on this expression, detailed computations for the linear polarization of x-ray photons emitted in the (e, 2γ) two-step recombination of uranium ions U^92+ are carried out for a wide range of projectile energies.

Generation of four-partite GHZ and W states by using a high-finesse bimodal cavity

We propose two novel schemes to engineer four-partite entangled Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and W states in a deterministic way by using chains of (two-level) Rydberg atoms within the framework of cavity QED. These schemes are based on the resonant interaction of the atoms with a bimodal cavity that simultaneously supports, in contrast to a single-mode cavity, two independent modes of the photon field. In addition, we suggest the schemes to reveal the non-classical correlations for the engineered GHZ and W states. It is shown how these schemes can be extended in order to produce general N-partite entangled GHZ and W states.

The role of the atom-cavity detuning in bimodal cavity experiments

The coherent evolution of the atom-cavity state in bimodal (cavity) experiments has been analyzed for a realistic time-dependence in detuning the atomic transition frequency. Apart from a `smooth switch' of the atomic resonance from one to the second mode of a bimodal cavity, we considered also an additional (effective) interaction between the field modes of the cavity, known as `communication channel'. Comparison of our model computations has been made especially with the measurements by Rauschenbeutel et al., [2001 Phys. Rev. A 64 050301] who demonstrated for the first time the entanglement of the field modes in a bimodal cavity. It is shown that the agreement between the (theoretically) predicted and experimental phase shifts can be improved by allowing a `communication' between the two field modes during a short but finite switch of the atomic transition frequency from one mode to the other. We therefore suggest that the details of the atom-cavity detuning should be taken into account for the future interpretation of bimodal cavity experiments.

Electron-ion recombination of Si IV forming Si III: Storage-ring measurement and multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations

The electron-ion recombination rate coefficient for Si IV forming Si III was measured at the heavy-ion storage-ring TSR. The experimental electron-ion collision energy range of 0-186 eV encompassed the 2p(6) nl n'l' dielectronic recombination (DR) resonances associated with 3s to nl core excitations, 2s 2p(6) 3s nl n'l' resonances associated with 2s to nl (n=3,4) core excitations, and 2p(5) 3s nl n'l' resonances associated with 2p to nl (n=3,...,infinity) core excitations. The experimental DR results are compared with theoretical calculations using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) method for DR via the 3s to 3p n'l' and 3s to 3d n'l' (both n'=3,...,6) and 2p(5) 3s 3l n'l' (n'=3,4) capture channels. Finally, the experimental and theoretical plasma DR rate coefficients for Si IV forming Si III are derived and compared with previously available results.

Extended Cluster Model for Light, and Medium Nuclei

The structures, the electromagnetic transitions, and the beta decay strengths of exotic nuclei are investigated within an extended cluster model. We start by deriving an effective nuclear Hamiltonian within the $S_2$ correlation operator. Tensor forces are introduced in a perturbative expansion which includes up to the second order terms. Within this Hamiltonian we calculate the distributions and the radii of A=3,~4 nuclei. For exotic nuclei characterized by n valence protons/neutrons we excite the structure of the closed shell nuclei via mixed modes formed by considering correlations operators of higher order. Good results have been obtained for the calculated transitions and for the beta decay transition probabilities.

Correlation Effects on the Charge Radii of Exotic Nuclei

The structures and distributions of light nuclei are investigated within a microscopic correlation model. Two particle correlations are responsible for the scattering of model particles either to low momentum- or to high momentum-states. The low momentum states form the model space while the high momentum states are used to calculate the G-matrix. The three and higher order particle correlations do not play a role in the latter calculation especially if the correlations induced by the scattering operator are of sufficient short range. They modify however, via the long tail of the nuclear potential, the Slater determinant of the (A) particles by generating excited Slater's determinants.

Correlations in Many Electron Systems: Theory and Applications

In this contribution we present calculations performed for interacting electron systems within a non-perturbative formulation of the cluster theory. Extrapolation of the model to describe the time dependence of the interacting systems is feasible and planed. The theory is based on the unitary operator $e^{iS}$ ({\it S} is the correlation operator) formalism which, in this paper, is treated non perturbatively within many-particle correlations. The application of the derived equations to few-body systems is realized in terms of Generalized Linearization Approximations (GLA) and via the Cluster Factorization Theory (CFT). To check the reliability of the model we present two different applications. In the first we evaluate the transitions energies in Helium-, Lithium-, Beryllium-, and Boron-like Oxygen. The calculation aims to a precise determination of the satellite transitions which play an important role in plasma diagnostics. In a second we investigate a non-perturbative method to evaluate the charge radii of the Helium and Lithium isotopes by using the Isotopic Shift theory. We have found that our model leads naturally to components of $e^--e^+$ pair in the two-electron wave functions of the Helium isotopes and three-electron wave functions of the Lithium isotopes. The possible connection of these terms to the QED leading diagrams is postulated.
