Hard probes in heavy ion collisions at the LHC: heavy flavour physics

We present the results from the heavy quarks and quarkonia working group. This report gives benchmark heavy quark and quarkonium cross sections for $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at the LHC against which the $AA$ rates can be compared in the study of the quark-gluon plasma. We also provide an assessment of the theoretical uncertainties in these benchmarks. We then discuss some of the cold matter effects on quarkonia production, including nuclear absorption, scattering by produced hadrons, and energy loss in the medium. Hot matter effects that could reduce the observed quarkonium rates such as color screening and thermal activation are then discussed. Possible quarkonium enhancement through coalescence of uncorrelated heavy quarks and antiquarks is also described. Finally, we discuss the capabilities of the LHC detectors to measure heavy quarks and quarkonia as well as the Monte Carlo generators used in the data analysis.

Matching NLO QCD and parton showers in heavy flavour production

We apply the MC@NLO approach to the process of heavy flavour hadroproduction. MC@NLO is a method for matching next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations and parton shower Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, with the following features: fully exclusive events are generated, with hadronisation according to the MC model; total rates are accurate to NLO; NLO results for distributions are recovered upon expansion in $\as$; hard emissions are treated as in NLO computations while soft/collinear emissions are handled by the MC simulation, with the same logarithmic accuracy as the MC; matching between the hard and soft regions is smooth, and no intermediate integration steps are necessary. The method was applied previously to the hadroproduction of gauge boson pairs, which at NLO involves only initial-state QCD radiation and a unique colour structure. In heavy flavour production, it is necessary to include contributions from final-state QCD radiation and different colour flows. We present illustrative results on top and bottom production at the Tevatron and LHC.

QCD at high energy

I review recent results in QCD at high energy, emphasizing the role of higher-order computations, power corrections, and Monte Carlo simulations in the study of a few discrepancies between data and perturbative predictions, and discussing future prospects.

The MC@NLO Event Generator

This is the user's manual of MC@NLO.1.0. This package is a practical implementation, based upon the HERWIG event generator, of the recently proposed MC@NLO formalism for matching the next-to-leading order calculation of a QCD process with a parton-shower Monte Carlo simulation. The processes of standard-model vector boson pair production in hadronic collisions are available.

Matching NLO QCD computations and parton shower simulations

We propose a method for matching the next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation of a given QCD process with a parton shower Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. The method has the following features: fully exclusive events are generated, with hadronization according to the MC model; total exclusive rates are accurate to NLO; NLO results for distributions are recovered upon expansion in $α_S$; hard emissions are treated as in NLO computations while soft/collinear emissions are handled by the MC simulation, with the same logarithmic accuracy as the MC; and matching between the hard- and soft/collinear-emission regions is smooth. A fraction of events with negative weight is generated, but unweighting remains possible with reasonable efficiency. The method is clarified using a simple toy model, and illustrated by application to the hadroproduction of W$^+$W$^-$ pairs.

Phenomenological study of charm photoproduction at HERA

We present predictions for single inclusive distributions of charmed mesons, relevant to the HERA experiments. Our results are based upon a computation that correctly incorporates mass effects up to the next-to-leading order level, and the resummation of transverse momentum logarithms up to next-to-leading-logarithmic level. We apply the same acceptance cuts as the H1 and Zeus experiments, and compare our results to their data. We perform a study of the sensitivity of our predictions on the charm mass, $\LambdaQCD$, factorization scale, renormalization scale, and fragmentation parameters.

QCD radiative corrections to $γ^*γ^* \to$ hadrons at LEP2

In this talk we describe the order-$\as$ corrections to the total cross section and to jet rates in $γ^* γ^* \to$ hadrons for the process $\epem\to\epem +$ hadrons. We use a next-to-leading order general-purpose partonic Monte Carlo event generator that allows the computation of a rate differential in the produced leptons and hadrons. We compare our results with the experimental data for $\epem\to\epem +$ hadrons at LEP2.

Theory versus experiments in heavy flavour production

I discuss the current status of the comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental data, relevant to the production of open charm and bottom quarks in photon-hadron and photon-photon collisions. I advocate the use of a formalism that matches fixed-order computations to resummed computations in order to make firm statements on heavy flavour production as described by perturbative QCD.

Forward jets and forward $W$-boson production at hadron colliders

In this talk we give a short review of forward jets and forward $W$-boson production at hadron colliders, in view of the extraction of footprints of BFKL physics. We argue that at Tevatron energies, dijet production at large rapidity intervals is still subasymptotic with respect to the BFKL regime, thus the cross section is strongly dependent on the various cuts applied in the experimental setup. In addition, the choice of equal transverse momentum cuts on the tagging jets makes the cross section dependent on large logarithms of non-BFKL origin, and thus may spoil the BFKL analysis. For vector boson production in association with two jets, we argue that the configurations that are kinematically favoured tend to have the vector boson forward in rapidity. Thus $W + 2$ jet production lends itself naturally to extensions to the high-energy limit.

The $\pt$ spectrum of heavy quarks in photoproduction

We illustrate a formalism that allows to match the next-to-leading order cross section for the photoproduction of heavy quarks to the cross section obtained by resumming logarithms of $\pt/m$ to the next-to-leading accuracy, thus giving a sensible prediction for any value of $\pt$. We present a comparison between our predictions and H1 and ZEUS data.

We compute the order-$\as$ corrections to the total cross section and to jet rates in $γ^* γ^* \to$ hadrons for the process $\epem\to\epem +$ hadrons. We use a NLO order general-purpose partonic Monte Carlo event generator that allows the computation of a rate differential in the produced leptons and hadrons. The p_T Spectrum in Heavy-Flavour Photoproduction

We consider the transverse-momentum distribution of heavy flavours in photon-hadron collisions. We present a formalism in which large transverse-momentum logarithms are resummed to the next-to-leading level, and mass effects are included exactly up to order alpha_em alpha_s^2, so as to retain predictivity at both small and large transverse momenta. Phenomenological applications relevant to charm photoproduction at HERA are given.

Mueller-Navelet Jets at Hadron Colliders

We critically examine the definition of dijet cross sections at large rapidity intervals in hadron-hadron collisions, taking proper account of the various cuts applied in a realistic experimental setup. We argue that the dependence of the cross section on the precise definition of the parton momentum fractions and the presence of an upper bound on the momentum transfer cannot be neglected, and we provide the relevant modifications to the analytical formulae by Mueller and Navelet. We also point out that the choice of equal transverse momentum cuts on the tagging jets can spoil the possibility of a clean extraction of signals of BFKL physics.

QCD radiative corrections to $γ^*γ^* \to$ hadrons

We compute the order-$\as$ corrections to the total cross section and to jet rates for the process $\epem\to\epem +$ hadrons, where the hadrons are produced through crossed-channel quark exchange in the hard scattering of two off-shell photons originating from the incoming leptons. We use a next-to-leading order general-purpose partonic Monte Carlo event generator that allows the computation of a rate differential in the produced leptons and hadrons. We compare our results with the available experimental data for $\epem\to\epem +$ hadrons at LEP2.

I illustrate the techniques and the results of the computation of order-$\as$ corrections to the production of hadrons in the collision of two virtual photons, that originate from the incoming leptons at $\epem$ colliders.
