Spin-Triplet Superconductivity Induced by Longitudinal Ferromagnetic Fluctuations in UCoGe: Theoretical Aspect

Identification of pairing mechanisms leading to the unconventional superconductivity realized in copper-oxide, heavy-fermions, and organic compounds is one of the most challenging issues in condensed-matter physics. Clear evidence for an electron-phonon mechanism in conventional superconductors is seen by the isotope effect on the superconducting transition temperatures $T_{\rm SC}$, since isotopic substitution varies the phonon frequency without affecting the electronic states. In unconventional superconductors, magnetic fluctuations have been proposed to mediate superconductivity, and considerable efforts have been made to unravel relationships between normal-state magnetic fluctuations and superconductivity. Here, we show that characteristic experimental results on the ferromagnetic (FM) superconductor UCoGe ($T_{\rm Curie} \sim 2.5 $ K and $T_{\rm SC} \sim 0.6$ K) can be understood consistently within a scenario of the spin-triplet superconductivity induced by FM spin fluctuations. Temperature and angle dependencies of the upper critical magnetic field of the superconductivity ($H_{c2}$) are calculated on the basis of the above scenario by solving the Eliashberg equation. Calculated $H_{c2}$ well agrees with the characteristic experimental results observed in UCoGe. This is a first example that FM fluctuations are shown to be a pairing glue of superconductivity.

Bulk-edge correspondence for Chern topological phases: A viewpoint from a generalized index theorem

We explore the bulk-edge correspondence for topological insulators (superconductors) without time-reversal symmetry from the point of view of the index theorem for open spaces. We assume generic Hamiltonians not only with a linear dispersion but also with higher order derivatives arising from generic band structures. Using a generalized index theorem valid for such systems, we show the equivalence between the spectral flow of the edge states and the Chern numbers specifying the bulk systems.

A study on correlation effects in two dimensional topological insulators

We investigate correlation effects in two dimensional topological insulators (TI). In the first part, we discuss finite size effects for interacting systems of different sizes in a ribbon geometry. For large systems, there are two pairs of well separated massless modes on both edges. For these systems, we analyze the finite size effects using a standard bosonization approach. For small systems, where the edge states are massive Dirac fermions, we use the inhomogeneous dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) combined with iterative perturbation theory as an impurity solver to study interaction effects. We show that the finite size gap in the edge states is renormalized for weak interactions, which is consistent with a Fermi-liquid picture for small size TIs. In the second part, we investigate phase transitions in finite size TIs at zero temperature focusing on the effects of possible inter-edge Umklapp scattering for the edge states within the inhomogeneous DMFT using the numerical renormalization group. We show that correlation effects are effectively stronger near the edge sites because the coordination number is smaller than in the bulk. Therefore, the localization of the edge states around the edge sites, which is a fundamental property in TIs, is weakened for strong coupling strengths. However, we find no signs for "edge Mott insulating states" and the system stays in the topological insulating state, which is adiabatically connected to the non-interacting state, for all interaction strengths smaller than the critical value. Increasing the interaction further, a nearly homogeneous Mott insulating state is stabilized.

Superconductivity induced by longitudinal ferromagnetic fluctuations in UCoGe

From detailed angle-resolved NMR and Meissner measurements on a ferromagnetic (FM) superconductor UCoGe (T_Curie ~ 2.5 K and T_SC ~ 0.6 K), we show that superconductivity in UCoGe is tightly coupled with longitudinal FM spin fluctuations along the c axis. We found that magnetic fields along the c axis (H || c) strongly suppress the FM fluctuations and that the superconductivity is observed in the limited magnetic field region where the longitudinal FM spin fluctuations are active. These results combined with model calculations strongly suggest that the longitudinal FM spin fluctuations tuned by H || c induce the unique spin-triplet superconductivity in UCoGe. This is the first clear example that FM fluctuations are intimately related with superconductivity.

Spin fluctuations and superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion systems CeRhSi$_3$ and CeIrSi$_3$

We study the normal and the superconducting properties in noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductors CeRhSi$_3$ and CeIrSi$_3$. For the normal state, we show that experimentally observed linear temperature dependence of the resistivity is understood through the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations near the quantum critical point (QCP) in three dimensions. For the superconducting state, we derive a general formula to calculate the upper critical field $H_{c2}$, with which we can treat the Pauli and the orbital depairing effect on an equal footing. The strong coupling effect for general electronic structures is also taken into account. We show that the experimentally observed features in $H_{c2}\parallel \hat{z}$, the huge value up to 30(T), the downward curvatures, and the strong pressure dependence, are naturally understood as an interplay of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction due to the lack of inversion symmetry and the spin fluctuations near the QCP. The large anisotropy between $H_{c2}\parallel \hat{z}$ and $H_{c2}\perp \hat{z}$ is explained in terms of the spin-orbit interaction. Furthermore, a possible realization of the Fulde-Ferrell- Larkin-Ovchinnikov state for $H\perp \hat{z}$ is studied. We also examine effects of spin-flip scattering processes in the pairing interaction and those of the applied magnetic field on the spin fluctuations. We find that the above mentioned results are robust against these effects. The consistency of our results strongly supports the scenario that the superconductivity in CeRhSi$_3$ and CeIrSi$_3$ is mediated by the spin fluctuations near the QCP.

Colossal enhancement of upper critical fields in noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductors near quantum criticality: CeRhSi$_3$ and CeIrSi$_3$

Strong coupling effects on the upper critical fields $H_{c2}$ along the c-axis in the noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductors near quantum criticality CeRhSi$_3$ and CeIrSi$_3$ are examined. For sufficiently large spin-orbit interactions due to the lack of inversion symmetry, $H_{c2}$ is mainly determined by the orbital depairing effects. From microscopic calculations taking into account the strong spin fluctuations, we show that $H_{c2}$ is extremely enhanced as the system approaches the quantum critical point, resulting in $H_{c2}\sim 30$T even in the case with the low transition temperature $T_c(H=0)\sim 1$K, which well explains the huge $H_{c2}$ observed in the recent experiments. Our results reveal intrinsic and universal properties common to strong coupling superconductivity caused by spin fluctuations near quantum criticality.

Fractional flux quanta at intrinsic metallic interfaces of noncentrosymmetric superconductors

We examine intrinsic interfaces separating crystalline twin domains of opposite spin-orbit coupling in a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si. At these interfaces, low-energy Andreev bound states occur as a consequence of parity-mixed Cooper pairing, and a superconducting phase which violates time reversal symmetry can be realized. This provides an environment allowing flux lines with fractional flux quanta to be formed at the interface. Their presence could have strong implications on the flux creep behavior in such superconductors.

Thermodynamics of impurities in the anisotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain

The thermodynamics of finite open antiferromagnetic XXZ chains is studied using field theory, Bethe Ansatz and quantum Monte Carlo methods. For the susceptibility a parameter-free result as a function of the number of sites L and temperature T beyond the scaling limit is derived. The limiting cases T/J >> 1/L (J being the exchange constant), where the boundary correction shows a logarithmically suppressed Curie behaviour, and T/J << 1/L, where a crossover to the ground state behaviour takes place, are discussed in detail. Based on this analysis we present a simple formula for the averaged susceptibility of a spin-1/2 chain doped with non-magnetic impurities. We show that the effective Curie constant has a highly non-trivial temperature dependence and shows scaling in the low-temperature limit. Finally, corrections due to intra- and interchain couplings and implications for experiments on Sr_2 Cu_{1-x}Pd_x O_{3+δ} and related compounds are discussed.

Chain breaks and the susceptibility of Sr_2Cu_{1-x}Pd_xO_{3+δ} and other doped quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnets

We study the magnetic susceptibility of one-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnets containing non-magnetic impurities which cut the chain into finite segments. For the susceptibility of long anisotropic Heisenberg chain-segments with open boundaries we derive a parameter-free result at low temperatures using field theory methods and the Bethe Ansatz. The analytical result is verified by comparing with Quantum-Monte-Carlo calculations. We then show that the partitioning of the chain into finite segments can explain the Curie-like contribution observed in recent experiments on Sr_2Cu_{1-x}Pd_xO_{3+δ}. Possible additional paramagnetic impurities seem to play only a minor role.

Heavy Element Production in Inhomogeneous Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

We present a new astrophysical site of the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) that are very peculiar compared with the standard BBN. Some models of the baryogenesis suggest that very high baryon density regions were formed in the early universe. On the other hand, recent observations suggest that heavy elements already exist in high red-shifts and the origin of these elements become a big puzzle. Motivated by these, we investigate BBN in very high baryon density regions. BBN proceeds in proton-rich environment, which is known to be like the p-process. However, by taking very heavy nuclei into account, we find that BBN proceeds through both the p-process and the r-process simultaneously. P-nuclei such as 92Mo, 94Mo, 96Ru, 98Ru whose origin is not well known are also synthesized.

Nucleosynthesis inside Gamma-Ray Burst Accretion Disks

We investigate nucleosynthesis inside both a gamma-ray burst accretion disk and a wind launched from an inner region of the disk using one-dimensional models of the disk and wind and a nuclear reaction network. Far from a central black hole, the composition of accreting gas is taken to be that of an O-rich layer of a massive star before core collapse. We find that the disk consists of five layers characterized by dominant elements: O16, Si28, Fe54 (and Ni56), He4, and nucleons, and the individual layers shift inward with keeping the overall profiles of compositions as the accretion rate decreases. Ni56 are abundantly ejected through the wind from the inner region of the disk with the electron fraction \simeq 0.5. In addition to iron group, elements heavier than Cu, in particular Cu63 and Zn64, are massively produced through the wind. Various neutron-rich nuclei can be also produced in the wind from neutron-rich regions of the disk, though the estimated yields have large uncertainties.

P-Process Nucleosynthesis inside Supernova-Driven Supercritical Accretion Disks

We investigate p-process nucleosynthesis in a supercritical accretion disk around a compact object of 1.4 M_solar, using the self-similar solution of an optically thick advection dominated flow. Supercritical accretion is expected to occur in a supernova with fallback material accreting onto a new-born compact object. It is found that appreciable amounts of p-nuclei are synthesized via the p-process in supernova-driven supercritical accretion disks (SSADs) when the accretion rate m_dot = M_dot c^2/(16 L_Edd) >10^5, where L_Edd is the Eddington luminosity. Abundance profiles of p-nuclei ejected from SSADs have similar feature to those of the oxygen/neon layers in Type II supernovae when the abundance of the fallback gas far from the compact object is that of the oxygen/neon layers in the progenitor. The overall abundance profile is in agreement with that of the solar system. Some p-nuclei, such as Mo, Ru, Sn, and La, are underproduced in the SSADs as in Type II supernovae. If the fallback gas is mixed with a small fraction of proton through Rayleigh-Taylor instability during the explosion, significant amounts of Mo92 are produced inside the SSADs. Ru96 and La138 are also produced when the fallback gas contains abundant proton though the overall abundance profile of p-nuclei is rather different from that of the solar system. The p-process nucleosynthesis in SSADs contributes to chemical evolution of p-nuclei, in particular Mo92, if several percents of fallback matter are ejected via jets and/or winds.

An Almost Perfect Quantum Lattice Action for Low-energy SU(2) Gluodynamics

We study various representations of infrared effective theory of SU(2) Gluodynamics as a (quantum) perfect lattice action. In particular we derive a monopole action and a string model of hadrons from SU(2) Gluodynamics. These are lattice actions which give almost cut-off independent physical quantities even on coarse lattices. The monopole action is determined by numerical simulations in the infrared region of SU(2) Gluodynamics. The string model of hadrons is derived from the monopole action by using BKT transformation. We illustrate the method and evaluate physical quantities such as the string tension and the mass of the lowest state of the glueball analytically using the string model of hadrons. It turns out that the classical results in the string model is near to the one in quantum SU(2) Gluodynamics.

A Quantum Perfect Lattice Action for Monopoles and Strings

A quantum perfect lattice action in four dimensions can be derived analytically as a renormalized trajectory when we perform a block spin transformation of monopole currents in a simple but non-trivial case of quadratic monopole interactions. The spectrum of the lattice theory is identical to that of the continuum theory. The perfect monopole action is transformed exactly into a lattice action of a string model. A perfect operator evaluating a static potential between electric charges is also derived explicitly. If the monopole interactions are weak as in the case of infrared SU(2) QCD, the string interactions become strong. The static potential and the string tension is estimated analytically by the use of the strong coupling expansion and the continuum rotational invariance is restored completely.

Recent topics of infrared effective lattice QCD

Three topics concerning infrared effective lattice QCD are discussed. (1)Perfect lattice action of infrared SU(3) QCD and perfect operators for the static potential are analytically given when we assume two-point monopole interactions alone. The assumption seems to be justified from numerical analyses of pure SU(3) QCD in maximally abelian gauge. (2)Gauge invariance of monopole dominance can be proved theoretically if the gauge invariance of abelian dominance is proved. The gauge invariance of monopole condensation leads us to confinement of abelian neutral but color octet states after abelian projection. (3)A stochastic gauge fixing method is developed to study the gauge dependence of the Abelian projection, which interpolates between the maximally abelian (MA) gauge and no gauge fixing. Abelian dominance for the heavy quark potential holds even in the gauge which is far from Maximally Abelian one.

String tension and glueball masses of SU(2) QCD from perfect action for monopoles and strings

We study the perfect monopole action as an infrared effective theory of SU(2) QCD. It is transformed exactly into a lattice string model. Since the monopole interactions are weak in the infrared SU(2) QCD, the string interactions become strong. The strong coupling expansion of string model shows the quantum fluctuation is small. The classical string tension is estimated analytically, and we see it is very close to the quantum one in the SU(2) QCD. We also discuss how to calculate the glueball mass in our model.

On the perfect lattice actions of abelian-projected SU(2) QCD

We study the perfect lattice actions of abelian-projected SU(2) gluodynamics. Using the BKT and duality transformations on the lattice, an effective string model is derived from the direction-dependent quadratic monopole action, obtained numerically from SU(2) gluodynamics in maximally abelian gauge. The string tension and the restoration of continuum rotational invariance are investigated using strong coupling expansion of lattice string model analytically. We also found that the block spin transformation can be performed analytically for the quadratic monopole action.

Transport Properties of the One Dimensional Ferromagnetic Kondo Lattice Model : A Qualitative Approach to Oxide Manganites

The transport properties of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model in one dimension are studied via bosonization methods. The antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which normally appear because of the RKKY interactions, are explicitly taken into account as a direct exchange between the ``core'' spins. It is shown that in the paramagnetic regime with the local antiferromagnetic fluctuations, the resistivity decays exponentially as the temperature increases while in the ferromagnetic regime the system is an almost perfect conductor. %A non-perturbative description of localized spin polarons %in the paramagnetic region is obtained. The effect of a weak applied field is discussed to be reduced to the case of the ferromagnetic state leading to band splitting. The qualitative relevance of the results for the problem of the Oxide Manganites is emphasized.
