Coherent heavy quasiparticles in CePt5 surface alloy

We report on the results of a high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) study on the ordered surface alloy CePt5. The temperature dependence of the spectra show the formation of the coherent low-energy heavy-fermion band near the Fermi level. This experimental data is supported by a multi-band model calculation in the framework of the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT).

Colors of a Second Earth: Estimating the fractional areas of ocean, land, and vegetation of Earth-like exoplanets

Characterizing the surfaces of rocky exoplanets via the scattered light will be an essential challenge to investigate the existence of life on habitable exoplanets. We present a simple reconstruction method for fractional areas of different surface types from photometric variations, or colors, of a second Earth. We create mock light curves for Earth without clouds using empirical data. Then these light curves are fitted to the isotropic scattering model consisting of 4 surface types: ocean, soil, snow and vegetation. In an idealized situation where the photometric errors are only photon shot noise, we are able to reproduce the fractional areas of those components fairly well. We may be even able to detect a signature of vegetation from the distinct feature of photosynthesis on the Earth, known as the red edge. In our reconstruction method, Rayleigh scattering due to the atmosphere has an important effect, and for terrestrial exoplanets with atmosphere similar to our Earth, it is possible to estimate the presence of oceans and an atmosphere simultaneously.

Compensation of the Crossing Angle with Crab Cavities at KEKB

Crab cavities have been installed in the KEKB B--Factory rings to compensate the crossing angle at the collision point and thus increase luminosity. The beam operation with crab crossing has been done since February 2007. This is the first experience with such cavities in colliders or storage rings. The crab cavities have been working without serious issues. While higher specific luminosity than the geometrical gain has been achieved, further study is necessary and under way to reach the prediction of simulation.

Search for Dark Matter WIMPs using Upward Through-going Muons in Super-Kamiokande

We present the results of indirect searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with 1679.6 live days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector using neutrino-induced upward through-going muons. The search is performed by looking for an excess of high energy muon neutrinos from WIMP annihilations in the Sun, the core of the Earth, and the Galactic Center, as compared to the number expected from the atmospheric neutrino background. No statistically significant excess was seen. We calculate flux limits in various angular cones around each of the above celestial objects. We obtain conservative model-independent upper limits on WIMP-nucleon cross-section as a function of WIMP mass and compare these results with the corresponding results from direct dark matter detection experiments.

Simulation of Returning Electrons from a Klystron Collector

Spurious oscillations in klystrons due to returning electrons from the collector into the drift tube were observed and studied at KEK. Simulations of returning electrons using EGS4 Monte Carlo method have been performed. And the oscillation conditions are described in this paper.

The RF source of the 60-MeV Linac for the KEK/JAERI Joint Project

The construction of the 60-MeV proton linac has started as a low-energy front of the KEK/JAERI Joint Project for a high-intensity proton accelerator facility at KEK. The accelerating frequency is 324 MHz. Five UHF klystrons are used as an rf source; their ratings have a maximum power of 3 MW, a beam pulse width of a 700 micro-sec (an rf pulse width is 650 micro-sec) and a repetition rate of 50 pps. We have manufactured a proto-type rf source (a power-supply system with a modulating-anode pulse modulator and prototype klystrons). In this paper, the specifications and developments of the rf source, including the WR-2300 waveguide system, are summarized. During the manufacturing process, strong oscillations due to back-going electrons from the collector were observed. This phenomenon was analyzed both experimentally and theoretically. We have tested up to an output power of nearly 3 MW, and succeeded to test the DTL hot-model structure.
