Survival of magnetic correlations above ordering temperature in a ferromagnetically ordered classical kagomé magnet: Li9Cr3(P2O7)3(PO4)2

Motivated by the recent discovery of a semiclassical nematic spin liquid state in a Heisenberg kagomé antiferromagnet Li9Fe3(P2O7)3(PO4)2 (LFPO) with S=5/2 [Kermarrec et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 157202 (2021)], we now investigate the impact of spin quantum number S on the ground state properties by studying the isostructural kagomé magnet Li9Cr3(P2O7)3(PO4)2 (LCPO) with active t2g orbitals and S = 3/2. Thermodynamic measurements reveal that the ground state properties of LCPO is dominated by the ferromagnetic interactions with a mean-field temperature $θ\sim$ 3 K (J < 1 K) and the ordering temperature, Tc ~ 2.7 K, and the size of the ordered moment $\sim 1.05 \pm 0.25 $ ~$μ_B$ is significantly reduced from that of a fully ordered moment. The ab initio electronic structure calculations nicely corroborate the thermodynamic results and suggest the presence of additional in and out-of-plane further neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings, though significantly weaker in comparison to the dominant first-nearest neighbor ferromagnetic coupling. The spin-lattice relaxation rate measured with fields larger than the saturation field shows a magnetic field induced gap ($Δ\propto B$) in the excitation spectrum, and in $B \rightarrow 0$ limit the gap has a finite intercept ~ 3 K, equivalent to the mean-field scale. We interpret the origin of this gap is associated with the magnetic interactions inherent to the material. With our experimental results, we establish the stabilization of a ferromagnetic like ground state and the persistence of magnetic-correlations above the ordering temperature in LCPO.

Dynamics of ethylene groups and hyperfine interactions between donor and anion molecules in $λ$-type organic conductors studied by $^{69,71}$Ga-NMR spectroscopy

We present the results of $^{69,71}$Ga-NMR measurements on an organic antiferromagnet $λ$-(BEDSe-TTF)$_2$GaCl$_4$ [BEDSe-TTF=bis(ethylenediseleno)tetrathiafulvalene], with comparison to reports on $λ$-(BETS)$_2$GaCl$_4$ [BETS=bis(ethylenedithio)tetraselenafulvalene] [T. Kobayashi et al., Phys. Rev. B 102, 235131 (2020)]. We found that the dynamics of two crystallographically independent ethylene groups induce two types of quadrupolar relaxation in the high-temperature region. As the ethylene motion freezes, hyperfine (HF) interactions develop between $π$ spin and Ga nuclear spin below 100 K, and thereby magnetic fluctuations of the $π$-spin system are detected even from the Ga site. The HF interaction in $λ$-(BETS)$_2$GaCl$_4$ was more than twice as large as in $λ$-(BEDSe-TTF)$_2$GaCl$_4$, implying that the short contacts between Cl atoms and the chalcogens of fulvalene part are essential for the transferred HF interaction. We propose that NMR using nuclei in anion layers is useful for studying interlayer interactions in organic conductors, which have not been studied experimentally. In addition, because the mechanism of the transferred HF interaction is considered to be the same as $π$-$d$ interaction in isostructural Fe-containing $λ$-type salts, our findings aid in the understanding of their physical properties.

Disordered quantum spin state in the stripe lattice system consisting of triangular and square tilings

Quantum fluctuations originating phase competition or geometrical frustration of spins lead to novel states such as a quantum critical point and a quantum spin liquid where the strong quantum fluctuations suppress any ordered states even at 0 K. Utilizing site-selective NMR for a quasi-two dimensional organic conductor $λ$-(STF)$_2$GaCl$_4$, we investigate the non-magnetic insulating phase of the stripe lattice system consisting of triangular and square tilings. We found development of AF spin fluctuations with decreasing temperature. Regardless of large enhancement of spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ owing to critical slowing down below 10 K, no long-range magnetic ordering was observed down to 1.63 K two orders of magnitude less than the exchange interaction $J/k_{\rm B} \simeq$ 194 K. Moreover, $1/T_1$ saturated below 3.5 K. These results are in stark contrast to observed behaviors so far in other non-magnetic ground states discussed in terms of spin liquids, demonstrating realization of an exotic quantum state accompanying quantum criticality.

Nuclear structure of 30S and its implications for nucleosynthesis in classical novae

The uncertainty in the 29P(p,gamma)30S reaction rate over the temperature range of 0.1 - 1.3 GK was previously determined to span ~4 orders of magnitude due to the uncertain location of two previously unobserved 3+ and 2+ resonances in the 4.7 - 4.8 MeV excitation region in 30S. Therefore, the abundances of silicon isotopes synthesized in novae, which are relevant for the identification of presolar grains of putative nova origin, were uncertain by a factor of 3. To investigate the level structure of 30S above the proton threshold (4394.9(7) keV), a charged-particle spectroscopy and an in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy experiments were performed. Differential cross sections of the 32S(p,t)30S reaction were measured at 34.5 MeV. Distorted wave Born approximation calculations were performed to constrain the spin-parity assignments of the observed levels. An energy level scheme was deduced from gamma-gamma coincidence measurements using the 28Si(3He,n-gamma)30S reaction. Spin-parity assignments based on measurements of gamma-ray angular distributions and gamma-gamma directional correlation from oriented nuclei were made for most of the observed levels of 30S. As a result, the resonance energies corresponding to the excited states in 4.5 MeV - 6 MeV region, including the two astrophysically important states predicted previously, are measured with significantly better precision than before. The uncertainty in the rate of the 29P(p,gamma)30S reaction is substantially reduced over the temperature range of interest. Finally, the influence of this rate on the abundance ratios of silicon isotopes synthesized in novae are obtained via 1D hydrodynamic nova simulations.
