Corrections to the energy levels of a spin-zero particle bound in a strong field

Formulas for the corrections to the energy levels and wave functions of a spin-zero particle bound in a strong field are derived. General case of the sum of a Lorentz-scalar potential and zero component of a Lorentz-vector potential is considered. The forms of the corrections differ essentially from those for spin-1/2 particles. As an example of application of our results, we evaluated the electric polarizability of a ground state of a spin-zero particle bound in a strong Coulomb field.

The $g$ factor of an electron or muon bound by an arbitrary central potential

We consider the $g$ factor of a spin-1/2 particle (electron or muon) bound by an arbitrary central field. We present an approach which allows one to express the relativistic $g$ factor in terms of the binding energy. We derive the general expression for the correction to the $g$ factor caused by a deviation of the central potential from the Coulomb one. As the application of this method, we consider the corrections to the $g$ factor due to the finite nuclear size, including vacuum polarization radiative correction. The effect of the anomalous magnetic moment is also taken into account.

Frequency comparisons and absolute frequency measurements of 171Yb+ single-ion optical frequency standards

We describe experiments with an optical frequency standard based on a laser cooled $^{171}$Yb$^+$ ion confined in a radiofrequency Paul trap. The electric-quadrupole transition from the $^2S_{1/2}(F=0)$ ground state to the $^2D_{3/2}(F=2)$ state at the wavelength of 436 nm is used as the reference transition. In order to compare two $^{171}$Yb$^+$ standards, separate frequency servo systems are employed to stabilize two probe laser frequencies to the reference transition line centers of two independently stored ions. The experimental results indicate a relative instability (Allan standard deviation) of the optical frequency difference between the two systems of $σ_y(1000 {\rm s})=5\cdot 10^{-16}$ only, so that shifts in the sub-hertz range can be resolved. Shifts of several hertz are observed if a stationary electric field gradient is superimposed on the radiofrequency trap field. The absolute optical transition frequency of Yb$^+$ at 688 THz was measured with a cesium atomic clock at two times separated by 2.8 years. A temporal variation of this frequency can be excluded within a $1σ$ relative uncertainty of $4.4\cdot 10^{-15}$ yr$^{-1}$. Combined with recently published values for the constancy of other transition frequencies this measurement provides a limit on the present variability of the fine structure constant $α$ at the level of $2.0\cdot 10^{-15}$ yr$^{-1}$.

Virtual light-by-light scattering and the g factor of a bound electron

The contribution of the light-by-light diagram to the g factor of electron and muon bound in Coulomb field is obtained. For electron in a ground state, our results are in good agreement with the results of other authors obtained numerically for large Z. For relatively small Z our results have essentially higher accuracy as compared to the previous ones. For muonic atoms, the contribution is obtained for the first time with the high accuracy in whole region of Z.

New limit on the present temporal variation of the fine structure constant

The comparison of different atomic transition frequencies over time can be used to determine the present value of the temporal derivative of the fine structure constant alpha in a model-independent way without assumptions on constancy or variability of other parameters. We have measured an optical transition frequency at 688 THz in ^{171}Yb+ with a cesium atomic clock at two times separated by 2.8 years and find a value for the fractional variation of the frequency ratio $f_{\rm Yb}/f_{\rm Cs}$ of $(-1.2\pm 4.4)\cdot 10^{-15}$ yr$^{-1}$, consistent with zero. Combined with recently published values for the constancy of other transition frequencies this measurement sets an upper limit on the present variability of alpha at the level of $2.0\cdot 10^{-15}$ yr$^{-1}$, corresponding so far to the most stringent limit from laboratory experiments.

Limits on a Dynamically Varying Fine Structure Constant

We show that using the modified form of the Dirac Hamiltonian as suggested by Bekenstein, does not affect the analysis in [1-4] of QSO data pertaining to a measurement of alpha variation. We obtain the present time limit on Bekenstein's parameter, tan^{2}chi =(0.2 \pm 0.7)\times10^{-6}, from the measurement of the hydrogen 2p fine structure using value of alpha obtained from different experiments.

2S hyperfine structure of atomic deuterium

We have measured the frequency splitting between the $(2S, F=1/2)$ and $(2S, F=3/2)$ hyperfine sublevels in atomic deuterium by an optical differential method based on two-photon Doppler-free spectroscopy on a cold atomic beam. The result $f_{\rm HFS}^{(D)}(2S)= 40 924 454(7)$ Hz is the most precise value for this interval to date. In comparison to the previous radio-frequency measurement we have improved the accuracy by the factor of three. The specific combination of hyperfine frequency intervals for metastable- and ground states in deuterium atom $D_{21}=8f_{\rm HFS}^{(D)}(2S)-f_{\rm HFS}^{(D)}(1S)$ derived from our measurement is in a good agreement with $D_{21}$ calculated from quantum-electrodynamics theory.

High-Precision Optical Measurement of the 2S Hyperfine Interval in Atomic Hydrogen

We have applied an optical method to the measurement of the 2S hyperfine interval in atomic hydrogen. The interval has been measured by means of two-photon spectroscopy of the 1S-2S transition on a hydrogen atomic beam shielded from external magnetic fields. The measured value of the 2S hyperfine interval is equal to 177 556 860(15) Hz and represents the most precise measurement of this interval to date. The theoretical evaluation of the specific combination of 1S and 2S hyperfine intervals D_21 is in moderately good agreement with the value for D_21 deduced from our measurement.

g factor in a light two body atomic system: a determination of fundamental constants to test QED

Energy levels of a two-body atomic system in an external homogeneous magnetic field can be presented in terms of magnetic moments of their components, however, those magnetic moments being related to bound particles differ from their free values. Study of bound g factors in simple atomic systems are now of interest because of a recent progress in experiments on medium Z ions and of a new generation of muonium experiments possible with upcoming intensive muon sources. We consider bound corrections to the g factors in several atomic systems, experimental data for which are available in literature: hydrogen, helium-3 ion, muonium, hydrogen-like ions with spinless nuclei with medium Z.

Production of bound {$μ^{+}μ^{-}$}-systems in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Dimuonium (the bound system of two muons, $μ^+μ^-$-atom) has not been observed yet. In this paper we discuss the electromagnetic production of dimuonium at RHIC and LHC in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The production of parastates is analyzed in the equivalent photon approximation. For the treatment of orthostates, we develop a three photon formalism. We determine the production rates at RHIC and LHC with an accuracy of a few percent and discuss problems related to the observation of dimuonium.

Corrections to Hyperfine Splitting and Lamb Shift Induced by the Overlapping Two-Loop Electron Self-Energy Insertion in the Electron Line

Contributions to HFS and to the Lamb shift intervals of order $α^2(Zα)^5$ induced by the graph with the two-loop overlapping electron self-energy diagram inserted in the electron line are considered. Explicit expression for the overlapping two-loop self-energy diagram in the Fried-Yennie gauge is obtained. Contributions both to HFS and Lamb shift induced by the diagram containing such subgraph are calculated.
