The octupole collective Hamiltonian. Does it follow the example of the quadrupole case?

A general form of the octupole collective Hamiltonian is introduced and analyzed based on fundamental tensors in the seven-dimensional tensor space. Possible definitions of intrinsic frames of reference possessing cubic symmetry for the octupole tensor are considered. Cubic intrinsic octupole coordinates or deformations are introduced. Shapes of the octupoloid are investigated. The octupole collective Hamiltonian is expressed in intrinsic coordinates. An intrinsic angular momentum carried by the octupole vibrations is discovered. Small oscillations about an axially-symmetric pear shape are analyzed. Formulation of a unified quadrupole-octupole collective model is discussed.

Signatures of chirality in the core-particle-hole systems

An odd-odd nucleus is treated as the core-particle-hole system. The core is described by the Bohr Hamiltonian. Different collective potentials of the core are investigated. The odd particle and hole are assumed to be in the symmetric [proton h11/2]x[neutron hole h11/2] configuration. Signatures of chirality in the odd-odd nucleus spectra are observed. The sufficient condition for the appearance of signatures of chirality in the core-particle-hole system is the alpha-symmetry of the core provided the particle-hole configuration of the odd valence particles is symmetric.

Spatial symmetries of the local densities

Spatial symmetries of the densities appearing in the nuclear Density Functional Theory are discussed. General forms of the local densities are derived by using methods of construction of isotropic tensor fields. The spherical and axial cases are considered.

Quadrupole collective states within the Bohr collective Hamiltonian

The article reviews the general version of the Bohr collective model for the description of quadrupole collective states, including a detailed study the model's kinematics. The general form of the classical and quantum Bohr Hamiltonian is presented together with a discussion of the tensor structure of the collective wave functions and with a short review of various methods of solving the Bohr Hamiltonian eigenvalue equation. The methods of derivation of the classical and quantum Bohr Hamiltonian from the microscopic many-body theory are recalled and the microscopic approach to the Bohr Hamiltonian is applied to interpret collective properties of 12 heavy even-even nuclei in the Hf-Hg region.

Self-consistent symmetries in the proton-neutron Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach

Symmetry properties of densities and mean fields appearing in the nuclear Density Functional Theory with pairing are studied. We consider energy functionals that depend only on local densities and their derivatives. The most important self-consistent symmetries are discussed: spherical, axial, space-inversion, and mirror symmetries. In each case, the consequences of breaking or conserving the time-reversal and/or proton-neutron symmetries are discussed and summarized in a tabulated form, useful in practical applications.

Local Density Approximation for proton-neutron pairing correlations. I. Formalism

In the present study we generalize the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory formulated in the coordinate space to the case which incorporates an arbitrary mixing between protons and neutrons in the particle-hole (p-h) and particle-particle (p-p or pairing) channels. We define the HFB density matrices, discuss their spin-isospin structure, and construct the most general energy density functional that is quadratic in local densities. The consequences of the local gauge invariance are discussed and the particular case of the Skyrme energy density functional is studied. By varying the total energy with respect to the density matrices the self-consistent one-body HFB Hamiltonian is obtained and the structure of the resulting mean fields is shown. The consequences of the time-reversal symmetry, charge invariance, and proton-neutron symmetry are summarized. The complete list of expressions required to calculate total energy is presented.

Kerman-Klein-Donau-Frauendorf model for odd-odd nuclei: formal theory

The Kerman-Klein-Donau-Frauendorf (KKDF) model is a linearized version of the Kerman-Klein (equations of motion) formulation of the nuclear many-body problem. In practice, it is a generalization of the standard core-particle coupling model that, like the latter, provides a description of the spectroscopy of odd nuclei in terms of the properties of neighboring even nuclei and of single-particle properties, that are the input parameters of the model. A divers sample of recent applications attest to the usefulness of the model. In this paper, we first present a concise general review of the fundamental equations and properties of the KKDF model. We then derive a corresponding formalism for odd-odd nuclei that relates their properties to those of four neighboring even nuclei, all of which enter if one is to include both multipole and pairing forces. We treat these equations in two ways. In the first we make essential use of the solutions of the neighboring odd nucleus problem, as obtained by the KKDF method. In the second, we relate the properties of the odd-odd nuclei directly to those of the even nuclei. For both choices, we derive equations of motion, normalization conditions, and an expression for transition amplitudes. We also solve the problem of choosing the subspace of physical solutions that arises in an equations of motion approach that includes pairing interactions.

Collective Quadrupole Excitations in Transitional Nuclei

The generalized Bohr Hamiltonian was used to describe the low-lying collective excitations in even-even isotopes of Ru, Pd, Te, Ba and Nd. The Strutinsky collective potential and cranking inertial functions were obtained using the Nilsson potential. The effect of coupling with the pairing vibrations is taken into account approximately when determining the inertial functions. The calculation does not contain any free parameter.

Point symmetries in the Hartree-Fock approach: Densities, shapes and currents

Three mutually perpendicular symmetry axes of the second order, inversion, and time reversal can be used to construct a double point group denoted by D2h(TD). Properties of this group are analyzed in relation to the symmetry and symmetry-breaking effects within the mean-field (Hartree-Fock) theories, both in even and odd fermion systems. We enumerate space symmetries of local one-body densities, and symmetries of electromagnetic moments, that appear when some or all of the D2h(TD) elements represent self-consistent mean-field symmetries.

Point symmetries in the Hartree-Fock approach: Symmetry-breaking schemes

We analyze breaking of symmetries that belong to the double point group D2h(TD) (three mutually perpendicular symmetry axes of the second order, inversion, and time reversal). Subgroup structure of the D2h(TD) group indicates that there can be as much as 28 physically different, broken-symmetry mean-field schemes --- starting with solutions obeying all the symmetries of the D2h(TD) group, through 26 generic schemes in which only a non-trivial subgroup of D2h(TD) is conserved, down to solutions that break all of the D2h(TD) symmetries. Choices of single-particle bases and the corresponding structures of single-particle hermitian operators are discussed for several subgroups of D2h(TD).

The low-lying quadrupole collective excitations of Ru and Pd isotopes

Quadrupole excitations of even-even Ru and Pd isotopes are described within microscopic approach based on the general collective Bohr model which includes the effect of coupling with the pairing vibrations. The excitation energies and E2 transition probabilities observed in 104-114Ru and 106-110Pd are reproduced in the frame of the calculation containing no free parameters.

Collective quadrupole excitations in the 50<Z,N<82 nuclei with the generalized Bohr Hamiltonian

The generalized Bohr Hamiltonian is applied to a description of low-lying collective excitations in even-even isotopes of Te, Xe, Ba, Ce, Nd and Sm. The collective potential and inertial functions are determined by means of the Strutinsky method and the cranking model, respectively. A shell-dependent parametrization of the Nilsson potential is used. An approximate particle-number projection is performed in treatment of pairing correlations. The effect of coupling with the pairing vibrations is taken into account approximately when determining the inertial functions. The calculation does not contain any free parameter.
