First evaluation of the tracking performance of the ARCADIA Fully Depleted MAPS with 120 GeV proton beam

This work presents test beam characterization of the ARCADIA Main Demonstrator 3, a 200 $μ$m thick Fully Depleted MAPS developed using a custom LFoundry 110 nm CIS process on a high-resistivity substrate. Measurements using a 120 GeV proton beam demonstrate a detection efficiency exceeding 99% and a spatial resolution down to 3.8 $μ$m. The study evaluates cluster size, spatial resolution, and efficiency as a function of the threshold, front-end currents, and backside bias voltage.

POEMMA-Balloon with Radio: A multi-messenger, multi-detector balloon payload

A review of the current status of the field of Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) including a summary of remaining open questions was presented in the white paper "Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays: at the Intersection of the Cosmic and Energy Frontiers" (Astropart. Phys. 147 (2023) 102794; arXiv:2205.05845). The authors concluded that two types of next-generation detectors are needed to answer these questions: high-accuracy instruments and detectors that maximize exposure at the highest energies. The Probe Of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (POEMMA), a proposed dual-satellite observatory, exemplifies the latter class and is designed to increase statistics of the highest-energy cosmic rays and to detect very-high-energy neutrinos following multi-messenger alerts. POEMMA-Balloon with Radio (PBR) implements a compact, balloon-borne version of the POEMMA concept, adapted for a Super-Pressure Balloon flight from Wanaka, New Zealand, with an expected campaign exceeding 20 days. PBR couples a wide field-of-view Schmidt telescope and a hybrid optical focal surface with a dedicated radio instrument to deliver simultaneous, complementary measurements of extensive air showers. The mission will validate the fluorescence detection strategy from space and raise technology readiness for a POEMMA-like space mission by observing UHECR-induced fluorescence light from suborbital altitudes, obtaining the first simultaneous optical Cherenkov and radio observations of high-altitude horizontal air showers above the cosmic-ray knee (E>3PeV), enabling energy-spectrum and composition studies at the PeV scale, and performing follow-ups of multi-messenger alerts to search for very-high-energy neutrinos via upward-going air showers. This paper summarizes the PBR payload and its expected performance.

Improved measurement of the branching fraction of $D_s^+\toμ^+ν_μ$

Using $e^+e^-$ collision data with an integrated luminosity of $7.33~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, the branching fraction of the leptonic decay $D_s^+\toμ^+ν_μ$ is measured to be $(0.5294\pm0.0108_{\rm stat}\pm0.0085_{\rm syst})$\%. Based on this, the product of the $D_s^+$ decay constant $f_{D_s^+}$ and the magnitude of the $c\to s$ quark mixing matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ is determined to be $f_{D_s^+}|V_{cs}|=241.8\pm2.5_{\rm stat}\pm2.2_{\rm syst}~\mathrm{MeV}$. Using the value of $|V_{cs}|$ given by the global standard model fit, $f_{D_s^+}$ is found to be $248.4\pm2.5_{\rm stat}\pm2.2_{\rm syst}$\,MeV. Alternatively, using the value of $f_{D_s^+}$ from a recent lattice quantum chromodynamics calculation, $|V_{cs}|$ is determined to be $0.968\pm0.010_{\rm stat}\pm0.009_{\rm syst}$.

Study of the $f_{0}(980)$ and $f_{0}(500)$ Scalar Mesons through the Decay $D_{s}^{+} \to π^{+} π^{-} e^{+} ν_{e}$

Using $e^+e^-$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.33~${\rm fb^{-1}}$ recorded by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226~${\rm GeV}$, we present an analysis of the decay $D_{s}^{+} \to π^{+}π^{-} e^{+}ν_{e}$, where the $D_s^+$ is produced via the process $e^+e^- \to D_{s}^{*\pm}D_{s}^{\mp}$. We observe the $f_{0}(980)$ in the $π^+π^-$ system and the branching fraction of the decay $D_{s}^{+} \to f_{0}(980)e^{+}ν_{e}$ with $f_0(980)\toπ^+π^-$ measured to be $(1.72 \pm 0.13_{\rm stat} \pm 0.10_{\rm syst}) \times10^{-3}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The dynamics of the $D_{s}^{+} \to f_{0}(980)e^{+}ν_{e}$ decay are studied with the simple pole parametrization of the hadronic form factor and the Flatté formula describing the $f_0(980)$ in the differential decay rate, and the product of the form factor $f^{f_0}_{+}(0)$ and the $c\to s$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cs}|$ is determined for the first time to be $f^{f_0}_+(0)|V_{cs}|=0.504\pm0.017_{\rm stat}\pm0.035_{\rm syst}$. Furthermore, the decay $D^+_s\to f_0(500) e^+ν_e$ is searched for the first time but no signal is found. The upper limit on the branching fraction of $D^+_s\to f_0(500) e^+ν_e,~f_0(500)\toπ^+π^-$ decay is set to be $3.3 \times 10^{-4}$ at 90\% confidence level.

Impact of front-end parameters of the ARCADIA MD3 on charged particle detection

The ARCADIA INFN R&D project developed a Fully Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (FD-MAPS) using a customized LFoundry 110 nm CIS process. The first in-beam characterization of the ARCADIA Main Demonstrator 3 (MD3) sensor with 200 $μ$m active thickness has been performed at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility with a 120 GeV proton beam. The Device Under Test (DUT) is tested with a trigger-less telescope composed of two ARCADIA MD3 tracking planes. This early study investigates the effect of the front-end parameters on the tracking performance.

Pixel response characterization of the ARCADIA Fully Depleted MAPS

Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) achieved widespread use in several scientific applications, thanks to their properties, such as low material budget and high granularity. The ARCADIA INFN project developed a Fully-Depleted MAPS (FD-MAPS), using a modified LFoundry 110 nm CIS process. This work presents the first laboratory characterization of the ARCADIA MD3 prototype. Measurements include threshold uniformity studies using both test-pulse injection and a $^{55}$Fe source, as well as threshold and noise calibration achieved thanks to monochromatic X-ray sources. Ultimately, charge-collection efficiency is evaluated using an infrared laser setup.

Measurement of the hyperon weak radiative decay $Ξ^0\toγΣ^0$ at BESIII

The hyperon weak radiative decay $Ξ^0\toγΣ^0$ is measured via the process $J/ψ\toΞ^0\barΞ^0$. The absolute branching fraction of $Ξ^0\toγΣ^0$ is determined to be $(3.69\pm 0.21_{\text{stat}}\pm0.12_{\text{syst}})\times 10^{-3}$, based on $(10.087\pm 0.044)\times 10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The decay asymmetry parameter is measured, with a complete angular analysis of the cascade decay chain, to be $α_γ = -0.807\pm 0.095_{\text{stat}}\pm 0.011_{\text{syst}}$.

The simulation chain for the Terzina Cherenkov telescope on board the NUSES space mission

The Terzina telescope is designed to detect ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and Earth-skimming neutrinos from a 550 km low-Earth orbit (LEO) by observing Cherenkov light emitted by Extensive Air Showers (EAS) in the Earth's atmosphere pointing towards the telescope and in the field of view. In this contribution, a simulation chain for the Terzina telescope on board the NUSES mission will be presented. The chain encompasses all stages of the detection process, from event generation and EAS modelling with CORSIKA and EASCherSim to Geant4-based simulations of the telescope's geometry and optics, followed by modelling of the trigger system and silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) response. The Geant4 module includes the real CAD model of the telescope structure and optical components, with aspherical lenses manually implemented to ensure accurate representation of the optical efficiency and point spread function in Geant4. This comprehensive pipeline, developed using modular C++ code and Python tools for event analysis and reconstruction, produces detailed performance assessments of a telescope operating in a LEO mission but can be adapted for any high altitude Cherenkov telescope, making it a versatile tool for future observatory designs. The possibility of modelling balloons in the atmosphere has also been developed.

Test of local realism via entangled $Λ\barΛ$ system

The non-locality of quantum correlations is a fundamental feature of quantum theory. The Bell inequality serves as a benchmark for distinguishing between predictions made by quantum theory and local hidden variable theory (LHVT). Recent advancements in photon-entanglement experiments have addressed potential loopholes and have observed significant violations of variants of Bell inequality. However, examples of Bell inequalities violation in high energy physics are scarce. In this study, we utilize $(10.087\pm0.044)\times10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BES-III detector at the BEPCII collider, performing non-local correlation tests using the entangled hyperon pairs. The massive-entangled $Λ\barΛ$ systems are formed and decay through strong and weak interactions, respectively. Through measurements of the angular distribution of $p\bar{p}$ in $J/ψ\to γη_c$ and subsequent $η_c\toΛ(pπ^-)\barΛ(\bar{p}π^{+})$ cascade decays, a significant violation of LHVT predictions is observed. The exclusion of LHVT is found to be statistically significant at a level exceeding $5.2σ$ in the testing of three Bell-like inequalities.

Observation and branching fraction measurement of the decay $J\!/\!ψ\rightarrow \bar{p} Σ^{+} K_{S}^{0} + c.c.$

The first observation of the decays $J\!/\!ψ\rightarrow \bar{p} Σ^{+} K_{S}^{0}$ and $J\!/\!ψ\rightarrow p \barΣ^{-} K_{S}^{0}$ is reported using $(10087\pm44)\times10^{6}$ $J\!/\!ψ$ events recorded by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The branching fractions of each channel are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(J\!/\!ψ\rightarrow \bar{p} Σ^{+} K_{S}^{0})=(1.361 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.025) \times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J\!/\!ψ\rightarrow p \barΣ^{-} K_{S}^{0})=(1.352 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.025) \times 10^{-4}$. The combined result is $\mathcal{B}(J\!/\!ψ\rightarrow \bar{p} Σ^{+} K_{S}^{0} +c.c.)=(2.725 \pm 0.009 \pm 0.050) \times 10^{-4}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The results presented are in good agreement with the branching fractions of the isospin partner decay $J\!/\!ψ\rightarrow p K^- \barΣ^0 + c.c.$.

Measurement of Branching Fractions for $Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow n K_{S}^{0} π^{+}$ and $Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow n K_{S}^{0} K^{+}$

Based on 4.5 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data accumulated at center-of-mass energies between $4.600\,\mathrm{GeV}$ and $4.699\,\mathrm{GeV}$ with the BESIII detector, we measure the absolute branching fraction of the Cabibbo-favored decay $Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow n K_{S}^{0} π^{+}$ with the precision improved by a factor of 2.8 and report the first evidence for the singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decay $Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow n K_{S}^{0} K^{+}$. The branching fractions for $Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow n K_{S}^{0} π^{+}$ and $Λ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow n K_{S}^{0} K^{+}$ are determined to be $(1.86\pm0.08\pm0.04)\times10^{-2}$ and $\left(3.9^{+1.7}_{-1.4}\pm0.3\right)\times10^{-4}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic.

Measurement of the Inclusive Cross Sections of Prompt $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ Production in $e^{+}e^{-}$ Annihilation from $\sqrt{s}=3.808$ to $4.951$ GeV

The inclusive cross sections of prompt $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ production are measured at center-of-mass energies from 3.808 to 4.951 GeV. The dataset used is 22 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. The results obtained are in agreement with the previous BESIII measurements of exclusive $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ production. The average values obtained for the cross sections measured in the center-of-mass energy ranges from 4.527 to 4.951 GeV for $J/ψ$ and from 4.843 to 4.951 GeV for $ψ(3686)$, where the impact of known resonances is negligible, are $14.0\pm1.7\pm3.1$ pb and $15.3\pm3.0$ pb, respectively. For $J/ψ$, the first and the second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. For $ψ(3686)$, the uncertainty is total. These values are useful for testing charmonium production models.

Search for the decay $χ_{c1}(3872)\toπ^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}$

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.9 fb$^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.16 to 4.34 GeV with the BESIII detector, we search for the decay $χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}$ in the radiative production $e^{+}e^{-} \to γχ_{c1}(3872)$. No significant signal is observed, and the ratio for the branching fraction of $χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}$ to $χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-}J/ψ$ is measured as $\mathcal{R}\equiv\frac{\mathcal{B}[χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}]}{\mathcal{B}[χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-} J/ψ]}<0.18$ at 90$\%$ confidence level. The upper limit on the product of the cross section $σ[e^{+}e^{-}\toγχ_{c1}(3872)]$ and the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}[χ_{c1}(3872)\toπ^{+}π^{-}χ_{c1}]$ at each center-of-mass energy is also given. These measurements favor the non-conventional charmonium nature of the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ state.

Partial Wave Analysis of $J/ψ\rightarrow γγϕ$

Using a sample of $(10087\pm44)\times10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ events collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, a partial-wave analysis of the decay $γγϕ$ is performed to investigate the intermediate resonances in $J/ψ\rightarrowγR, R\arγϕ$. Resonances including $f_{1}(1285)$, $η(1405)$, $f_{1}(1420)$, $f_{1}(1510)$, $f_{2}(1525)$, $X(1835)$, $f_{2}(1950)$, $f_{2}(2010)$, $f_{0}(2200)$ and $η_{c}$ have been detected with statistical significance greater than 5$σ$. The product branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\rightarrowγR, R\ar γϕ)$ are reported, and the resonance parameters of $η(1405)$ and $X(1835)$ have been precisely determined. It is more probable that $η(1405)$ and $X(1835)$ act as the first - and second - excited states of $η^{\prime}$, respectively. The observation of $η_{c}\rightarrowγϕ$ holds great significance for the in depth study of charmonium properties. No evidence of $η(1295)$, $η_{1}(1855)$ or X(2370) is found. The measured upper limits of relevant BF products do not conflict with theoretical expectations for X(2370) as a pseudoscalar glueball and $η_{1}(1855)$ as a hybrid state.

$\mathcal R(3780)$ Resonance Interpreted as the $1^3D_1$-Wave Dominant State of Charmonium from Precise Measurements of the Cross Section of $e^+e^-\rightarrow$ Hadrons

We report the precise measurements of the cross section of $e^+e^-\rightarrow$ hadrons at center-of-mass energies from 3.645 to 3.871 GeV. We thereby perform the most precise study of the cross sections and find a complex system composed of three resonances of $\mathcal R(3760)$, $\mathcal R(3780)$, and $\mathcal R(3810)$. For the first time, we measure the $\mathcal R(3810)$ electronic width to be $(19.4 \pm 7.4 \pm 12.1)$ eV. For the $\mathcal R(3760)$ resonance, we measure the mass to be $(3751.9\pm 3.8\pm 2.8)$ MeV/$c^2$, the total width to be $(32.8 \pm 5.8 \pm 8.7)$ MeV, and the electronic width to be $(184\pm 75\pm 86)$ eV. For the $\mathcal R(3780)$ resonance, we measure its mass to be $(3778.7\pm 0.5\pm 0.3)$ MeV/$c^2$, total width to be $(20.3 \pm 0.8 \pm 1.7)$ MeV, and electronic width to be $(265\pm 67\pm 83)$ eV. Forty-seven years ago, the $ψ(3770)$ resonance was discovered, and was subsequently interpreted as the $1^3D_1$-wave dominant state of charmonium. However, our analysis of the total-hadron cross sections indicates that the $ψ(3770)$ is not a single state, but a complex system composed of the $\mathcal R(3760)$, $\mathcal R(3780)$, and $\mathcal R(3810)$ resonances. Among these, we interpret the $\mathcal R(3780)$ is a resonance dominated by the $1^3D_1$ charmonium state.

Observation of $D^+\to f_0(500)μ^+ν_μ$ and study of $D^+\to π^+π^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ decay dynamics

Using $2.93~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV,we investigate the semileptonic decays $D^+\to π^+π^- \ell^+ν_\ell$ ($\ell=e$ and $μ$). The $D^+\to f_0(500)μ^+ν_μ$ decay is observed for the first time. By analyzing simultaneously the differential decay rates of $D^+\to f_0(500) μ^+ν_μ$ and $D^+\to f_0(500) e^+ν_e$ in different $\ell^+ν_\ell$ four-momentum transfer intervals, the product of the relevant hadronic form factor $f^{f_0}_{+}(0)$ and the magnitude of the $c\to d$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cd}|$ is determined to be $f_{+}^{f_0} (0)|V_{cd}|=0.143\pm0.014_{\rm stat}\pm0.011_{\rm syst}$ for the first time. With the input of $|V_{cd}|$ from the global fit in the standard model, we determine $f_{+}^{f_0} (0)=0.63\pm0.06_{\rm stat}\pm0.05_{\rm syst}$. The absolute branching fractions of $D^+\to f_0(500)_{(π^+π^-)}μ^+ν_μ$ and $D^+\to ρ^0_{(π^+π^-)} μ^+ν_μ$ are determined as $(0.72\pm0.13_{\rm stat}\pm0.08_{\rm syst})\times10^{-3}$ and $(1.64\pm0.13_{\rm stat}\pm0.10_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-3}$. Combining these results with those of previous BESIII measurements on their semielectronic counterparts from the same data sample, we test lepton flavor universality by measuring the branching fraction ratios ${\mathcal B}_{D^+\to ρ^0 μ^+ν_μ}/{\mathcal B}_{D^+\to ρ^0 e^+ν_e}=0.88\pm0.10$ and ${\mathcal B}_{D^+\to f_0(500) μ^+ν_μ}/{\mathcal B}_{D^+\to f_0(500) e^+ν_e}=1.14\pm0.26$, which are compatible with the standard model expectation.

Precise Measurement of Born Cross Sections for $e^+e^-\to D\bar{D}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 3.80-4.95$ GeV

Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies ranging from 3.80 to 4.95 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 fb$^{-1}$, a measurement of Born cross sections for the $e^+e^-\to D^{0}\bar{D}^{0}$ and $D^{+}D^{-}$ processes is presented with unprecedented precision. Many clear peaks in the line shape of $e^+e^-\to D^{0}\bar{D}^{0}$ and $D^{+}D^{-}$ around the mass range of $G(3900)$, $ψ(4040)$, $ψ(4160)$, $Y(4260)$, and $ψ(4415)$, etc., are foreseen. These results offer crucial experimental insights into the nature of hadron production in the open-charm region.
