Shedding Light on Dark Matter: A Faraday Rotation Experiment to Limit a Dark Magnetic Moment

A Faraday rotation experiment can set limits on the magnetic moment of a electrically-neutral, dark-matter particle, and the limits increase in stringency as the candidate-particle mass decreases. Consequently, if we assume the dark-matter particle to be a thermal relic, our most stringent constraints emerge at the keV mass scale. We discuss how such an experiment could be realized and determine the limits on the magnetic moment as a function of mass which follow given demonstrated experimental capacities.

Observing Dark Matter via the Gyromagnetic Faraday Effect

If dark matter consists of cold, neutral particles with a non-zero magnetic moment, then, in the presence of an external magnetic field, a measurable gyromagnetic Faraday effect becomes possible. This enables direct constraints on the nature and distribution of such dark matter through detailed measurements of the polarization and temperature of the cosmic microwave background radiation.

Evidence for the Absence of Gluon Orbital Angular Momentum in the Nucleon

The Sivers mechanism for the single-spin asymmetry in unpolarized lepton scattering from a transversely polarized nucleon is driven by the orbital angular momentum carried by its quark and gluon constituents, combined with QCD final-state interactions. Both quark and gluon mechanisms can generate such a single-spin asymmetry, though only the quark mechanism can explain the small single-spin asymmetry measured by the COMPASS collaboration on the deuteron, suggesting the gluon mechanism is small relative to the quark mechanism. We detail empirical studies through which the gluon and quark orbital angular momentum contributions, quark-flavor by quark-flavor, can be elucidated.

Discrete Symmetries on the Light Front and a General Relation Connecting Nucleon Electric Dipole and Anomalous Magnetic Moments

We consider the electric dipole form factor, F_3(q^2), as well as the Dirac and Pauli form factors, F_1(q^2) and F_2(q^2), of the nucleon in the light-front formalism. We derive an exact formula for F_3(q^2) to complement those known for F_1(q^2) and F_2(q^2). We derive the light-front representation of the discrete symmetry transformations and show that time-reversal- and parity-odd effects are captured by phases in the light-front wave functions. We thus determine that the contributions to F_2(q^2) and F_3(q^2), Fock state by Fock state, are related, independent of the fundamental mechanism through which CP violation is generated. Our relation is not specific to the nucleon, but, rather, is true of spin-1/2 systems in general, be they lepton or baryon. The empirical values of the anomalous magnetic moments, in concert with empirical bounds on the associated electric dipole moments, can better constrain theories of CP violation. In particular, we find that the neutron and proton electric dipole moments echo the isospin structure of the anomalous magnetic moments, kappa^n ~ - kappa^p.

Radiative tritium beta-decay and the neutrino mass

The shape of the electron energy spectrum in 3H beta-decay permits a direct assay of the absolute scale of the neutrino mass; a highly accurate theoretical description of the electron energy spectrum is necessary to the empirical task. We update Sirlin's calculation of the outer radiative correction to nuclear beta-decay to take into account the non-zero energy resolution of the electron detector. In previous 3H beta-decay studies the outer radiative corrections were neglected all together; only Coulomb corrections to the spectrum were included. This neglect artificially pushes m_nu^2 < 0 in a potentially significant way. We present a computation of the theoretical spectrum appropriate to the extraction of the neutrino mass in the sub-eV regime.

Radiative neutron beta-decay in effective field theory

We consider radiative β--decay of the neutron in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory, with an extension including explicit Δdegrees of freedom. We compute the photon energy spectrum as well as the photon polarization; both observables are dominated by the electron bremsstrahlung contribution. Nucleon-structure effects not encoded in the weak coupling constants g_A and g_V are determined at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, and enter at the {\cal O}(0.5%)-level, making a sensitive test of the Dirac structure of the weak currents possible.

Observing Direct CP Violation in Untagged B-Meson Decays

Direct CP violation can exist in untagged B-meson decays to self-conjugate, three-particle final states; it would be realized as a population asymmetry in the untagged decay rate across the mirror line of the Dalitz plot of the three-body decay. We explore the numerical size of this direct CP-violating effect in a variety of B-meson decays to three pseudoscalar mesons; we show that the resulting asymmetry is comparable to the partial rate asymmetry in the analogous tagged decays, making the search for direct CP violation in the untagged decay rate, for which greater statistics accrue, advantageous.

Direct CP Violation in Untagged B-Meson Decays

Direct CP violation can exist in untagged, neutral B-meson decays to certain self-conjugate, hadronic final states. It can occur if the resonances which appear therein permit the identification of distinct, CP-conjugate states -- in analogy to stereochemistry, we term such states ``CP-enantiomers.'' These states permit the construction of a CP-odd amplitude combination in the untagged decay rate, which is non-zero if direct CP violation is present. The decay B\to π^+π^-π^0, containing the distinct CP-conjugate states ρ^+ π^- and ρ^- π^+, provides one such example of a CP-enantiomeric pair. We illustrate the possibilities in various multi-particle final states.

Intrinsic Charm in B-Meson Decays

Light cone hadron wave functions support Fock states of arbitrarily high particle number: their heavy quark content arises naturally through QCD interactions. We discuss what role c\bar c pairs, intrinsic to a hadron's structure, can play in B-meson decays. The effects can be prominent in hadronic decays for which the tree-level contributions are Cabibbo-suppressed, as in B\to πK decay, and they mimic ``charming penguin'' contributions.

Nonresonant Contributions in B->rho pi Decay

We consider nonresonant contributions in the Dalitz plot analysis of B->rho pi->pi^+ pi^- pi^0 decay and their potential impact on the extraction of the CKM parameter alpha. In particular, we examine the role of the heavy mesons B^* and B_0, via the process B->pi (B^*, B_0)->pi^+ pi^- pi^0, and their interference with resonant contributions in the rho-mass region. We discuss the inherent uncertainties and suggest that the effects may be substantially smaller than previously indicated.

Rescattering and chiral dynamics in B\to ρπdecay

We examine the role of B^0(\bar B^0) \to σπ^0 \to π^+π^- π^0 decay in the Dalitz plot analysis of B^0 (\bar B^0) \to ρπ\to π^+π^-π^0 decays, employed to extract the CKM parameter α. The σπchannel is significant because it can break the relationship between the penguin contributions in B\toρ^0π^0, B\toρ^+π^-, and B\toρ^-π^+ decays consequent to an assumption of isospin symmetry. Its presence thus mimics the effect of isospin violation. The σπ^0 state is of definite CP, however; we demonstrate that the B\toρπanalysis can be generalized to include this channel without difficulty. The σor f_0(400-1200) ``meson'' is a broad I=J=0 enhancement driven by strong ππrescattering; a suitable scalar form factor is constrained by the chiral dynamics of low-energy hadron-hadron interactions - it is rather different from the relativistic Breit-Wigner form adopted in earlier B\toσπand D\toσπanalyses. We show that the use of this scalar form factor leads to an improved theoretical understanding of the measured ratio Br(\bar B^0 \to ρ^\mp π^\pm) / Br(B^-\to ρ^0 π^-).

Evading the CKM Hierarchy: Intrinsic Charm in B Decays

We show that the presence of intrinsic charm in the hadrons' light-cone wave functions, even at a few percent level, provides new, competitive decay mechanisms for B decays which are nominally CKM-suppressed. For example, the weak decays of the B-meson to two-body exclusive states consisting of strange plus light hadrons, such as B\toπK, are expected to be dominated by penguin contributions since the tree-level b\to s u\bar u decay is CKM suppressed. However, higher Fock states in the B wave function containing charm quark pairs can mediate the decay via a CKM-favored b\to s c\bar c tree-level transition. Such intrinsic charm contributions can be phenomenologically significant. Since they mimic the amplitude structure of ``charming'' penguin contributions, charming penguins need not be penguins at all.

Sharpening Low-Energy, Standard-Model Tests via Correlation Coefficients in Neutron Beta-Decay

The correlation coefficients a, A, and B in neutron beta-decay are proportional to the ratio of the axial-vector to vector weak coupling constants, g_A/g_V, to leading recoil order. With the advent of the next generation of neutron decay experiments, the recoil-order corrections to these expressions become experimentally accessible, admitting a plurality of Standard Model (SM) tests. The measurement of both a and A, e.g., allows one to test the conserved-vector-current (CVC) hypothesis and to search for second-class currents (SCC) independently. The anticipated precision of these measurements suggests that the bounds on CVC violation and SCC from studies of nuclear beta-decay can be qualitatively bettered. Departures from SM expectations can be interpreted as evidence for non-V-A currents.

Watson's theorem and electromagnetism in K -> pi pi decay

We consider what constraints unitarity and CPT invariance yield on the strong and electromagnetic phases entering K -> pi pi decay. In particular, we show that the relative size of the electromagnetically-induced changes in the I=0 and I=2 phase shifts in the two--pion final state do not depend on the explicit coupling to the pi^+ pi^- gamma channel. This demonstrates that Watson's theorem can be extended to include the presence of electromagnetism. We point out the consequences for the general structure of the K -> pi pi decay amplitudes in the presence of isospin violation.

The Impact of |Delta I|=5/2 Transitions in K-> pi pi Decays

We consider the impact of isospin violation on the analysis of K-> pi pi decays. We scrutinize, in particular, the phenomenological role played by the additional weak amplitude, of |Delta I|=5/2 in character, incurred by the presence of isospin violation. We show that Watson's theorem is appropriate in O(m_d-m_u), so that the inferred pi-pi phase shift at sqrt{s}=m_K determines the strong phase difference between the I=0 and I=2 amplitudes in K-> pi pi decay. We find the magnitude of the |Delta I|=5/2 amplitude thus implied by the empirical branching ratios to be larger than expected from estimates of isospin-violating strong and electromagnetic effects. We effect a new determination of the octet and 27-plet coupling constants with strong-interaction isospin violation and with electromagnetic effects, as computed by Cirigliano, Donoghue, and Golowich, and find that we are unable to resolve the difficulty. Exploring the role of |Delta I|=5/2 transitions in the CP-violating observable epsilon'/epsilon, we determine that the presence of a |Delta I|=5/2 amplitude impacts the empirical determination of omega, the ratio of the real parts of the |Delta I|=3/2 to |Delta I|=1/2 amplitudes, and that it generates a decrease in the estimation of epsilon'/epsilon.

Additional Isospin-Breaking Effects in epsilon'/epsilon

Isospin-breaking effects, in particular those associated with electroweak-penguin contributions and pi0-eta,eta' mixing, have long been known to affect the Standard Model prediction of Re(epsilon'/epsilon) in a significant manner. We have found an heretofore unconsidered isospin-violating effect of importance; namely, the u-d quark mass difference can spawn |Delta I|=3/2 components in the matrix elements of the gluonic penguin operators. Using chiral perturbation theory and the factorization approximation for the hadronic matrix elements, we find within a specific model for the low-energy constants that we can readily accommodate an increase in Re(epsilon'/epsilon) by a factor of two.
