Structural Origin of Recovered Ferroelectricity in BaTiO$_3$ Nanoparticles

Nanoscale BaTiO3 particles (approximately 10 nm) prepared by ball-milling a mixture of oleic acid and heptane have been reported to have an electric polarization several times larger than that for bulk BaTiO3. In this work, detailed local, intermediate, and long-range structural studies are combined with spectroscopic measurements to develop a model structure of these materials. The X-ray spectroscopic measurements reveal large Ti off-centering as the key factor producing the large spontaneous polarization in the nanoparticles. Temperature-dependent lattice parameter changes reveal the sharpening of the structural phase transitions in these BaTiO3 nanoparticles compared to the pure nanoparticle systems. Sharp crystalline-type peaks in the barium oleate Raman spectra suggest that this component in the composite core-shell matrix, a product of mechanochemical synthesis, stabilizes an enhanced polar structural phase of the BaTiO3 core nanoparticles.

Interacting and Non-interacting Re\'{n}yi Holographic Dark Energy Models in DGP Braneworld

We investigate both the interacting and non-interacting R\'{e}nyi Holographic Dark Energy (RHDE) models in DGP brane world framework. Cosmological parameters and their evolutions are probed to obtain realistic cosmological models. We note that both the models accommodate the present accelerating phase of expansion with the observed dark energy density. Classical stability of the cosmological model and $Om$- diagnostic are also studied to test the suitability of the cosmological models obtained in the presence of RHDE in DGP braneworld.

R\'enyi Holographic Dark Energy Models In Multidimensional Universe

R\'enyi Holographic Dark Energy (RHDE) Models has been studied in different dimensions considering a flat FRW metric, subsequently exploring the nature of evolution of different cosmological parameters. It is seen that the number of dimensions affect the evolution of the cosmological parameters and the transition of the universe from decelerating to accelerating phase. The statefinder diagnosis has been performed and it is seen that the model corresponds to the $\Lambda CDM$ model for the present and future universe.

Interacting Tsallis holographic dark energy in higher dimensional Cosmology

We discuss Tsallis holographic dark energy (THDE) model in higher dimension. An interacting dark energy model is proposed with Generalized Chaplygin Gas (GCG) in the framework of Compact Kaluza-Klein gravity. It is shown that a stable configuration can be found in the present epoch which is also compatible with the observed value of the density parameter. It is noted that dark energy (DE) might have evolved from a phantom phase in the past. Nature of dark energy is found to depend on the coupling parameter of the interaction. Classical stability consideration is also found to put an upper bound on the model parameter.

High-Resolution In-situ Synchrotron X-ray Studies of Inorganic Perovskite CsPbBr$_3$: New Symmetry Assignments and Structural Phase Transitions

Perovskite photovoltaic ABX$_3$ systems are being studied due to their high energy-conversion efficiencies with current emphasis placed on pure inorganic systems. In this work, synchrotron single-crystal diffraction measurements combined with second harmonic generation measurements reveal the absence of inversion symmetry below room temperature in CsPbBr$_3$. Local structural analysis by pair distribution function and X-ray absorption fine structure methods are performed to ascertain the local ordering, atomic pair correlations, and phase evolution in a broad range of temperatures. The currently accepted space group assignments for CsPbBr$_3$ are found to be incorrect in a manner that profoundly impacts physical properties. New assignments are obtained for the bulk structure: $Im$$\bar{3}$ (above $\sim$ 410 K), $P$2$_1$/$m$ (between $\sim$ 300 K and $\sim$ 410 K), and the polar group $Pm$ (below $\sim$ 300 K), respectively. The newly observed structural distortions exist in the bulk structure consistent with the expectation of previous photoluminescence and Raman measurements. High-pressure measurements reveal multiple low-pressure phases, one of which exists as a metastable phase at ambient pressure. This work should help guide research in the perovskite photovoltaic community to better control the structure under operational conditions and further improve transport and optical properties.

Nature of the Structural Symmetries Associated with Hybrid Improper Ferroelectricity in Ca3X2O7

In hybrid improper ferroelectric systems, polarization arises from the onset of successive nonpolar lattice modes. In this work, measurements and modeling were performed to determine the spatial symmetries of the phases involved in the transitions to these modes. Structural and optical measurements reveal that the tilt and rotation distortions of the MnO6 or TiO6 polyhedra relative to the high symmetry phases driving ferroelectricity in the hybrid improper Ca3X2O7 system (X=Mn and Ti) condense at different temperatures. The tilt angle vanishes abruptly at T$_T$ ~ 400 K for Ca3Mn2O7 (and continuously for X=Ti) and the rotation mode amplitude is suppressed at much higher temperatures T$_R$ ~1060 K. Moreover, Raman measurements in Ca3Mn2O7 under isotropic pressure reveal that the polyhedral tilts can be suppressed by very low pressures (between 1.4 and2.3 GPa) indicating their softness. These results indicate that the Ca3Mn2O7 system provides a new platform for strain engineering of ferroelectric properties in film based systems with substrate induced strain.

Radiation damage and thermal shock response of carbon-fiber-reinforced materials to intense high-energy proton beams

A comprehensive study on the effects of energetic protons on carbon-fiber composites and compounds under consideration for use as low-Z pion production targets in future high-power accelerators and low-impedance collimating elements for intercepting TeV-level protons at the Large Hadron Collider has been undertaken addressing two key areas, namely, thermal shock absorption and resistance to irradiation damage.

Large Thermal Motion in Halide Perovskites

Solar cells based on hybrid perovskites have shown high efficiency while possessing simple processing methods. To gain a fundamental understanding of their properties on an atomic level, we investigate single crystals of CH3NH3PbI3 with a narrow transition (~5 K) near 327 K. Temperature dependent structural measurements reveal a persistent tetragonal structure with smooth changes in the atomic displacement parameters (ADPs) on crossing T*. We show that the ADPs for I ions yield extended flat regions in the potential wells consistent with the measured large thermal expansion parameter. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that this material exhibits significant high asymmetries in the Pb-I pair distribution functions. We also show that the intrinsically enhanced freedom of motion of the iodine atoms enables large deformations. This flexibility (softness) of the atomic structure results in highly localized atomic relaxation about defects and hence accounts for both the high carrier mobility as well as the structural instability.

Structural Changes Related to the Magnetic Transitions in Hexagonal InMnO3

Two magnetic ordering transitions are found in InMnO3, the paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition near ~118 K and a lower possible spin rotation transition near ~42 K. Multiple length scale structural measurements reveal enhanced local distortion found to be connected with tilting of the MnO5 polyhedra as temperature is reduced. Strong coupling is observed between the lattice and the spin manifested as changes in the structure near both of the magnetic ordering temperatures (at ~42 K and ~ 118 K). External parameters such as pressure are expected to modify the coupling.

Interacting Holographic Generalized Chaplygin Gas in compact Kaluza-Klein cosmology

We investigate Holographic Dark Energy Correspondence of Interacting Generalized Chaplygin Gas model in the framework of compact Kaluza-Klein cosmology. The evolution of the modified holographic dark energy and the equation of state parameter is obtained here.Using the present observational value of density parameter a stable configuration is formed which accommodates Dark Energy. we note a connection between Dark Energy and Phantom field and have shown that Dark Energy might have evolved from a Phantom state in the past.

On the viability of some Emergent Universe models

A particular class of flat Emergent Universe scenario is studied in light of recent observational data. Observationally permissible ranges of values are obtained for the model parameters. The class of model studied here can accommodate different composition of matter-energy as cosmic fluid. It is found that recent observations favour some compositions over others while some compositions can be ruled out with some level of confidence.

Observational Constraints on the Model Parameters of a Class of Emergent Universe

A class of Emergent Universe (EU) model is studied in the light of recent observational data. Significant constraints on model parameters are obtained from the observational data. Density parameter for a class of model is evaluated. Some of the models are in favour of the recent observations. Some models have been found which are not interesting yielding unrealistic present day value of the density parameter.

Emergent Universe from A Composition of Matter, Exotic Matter and Dark Energy

A specific class of flat Emergent Universe (EU) is considered and its viability is tested in view of the recent observations. Model parameters are constrained from Stern data for Hubble Parameter and Redshift ($H(z)$ vs. $z$) and from a model independent measurement of BAO peak parameter. It is noted that a composition of Exotic matter, dust and dark energy, capable of producing an EU, can not be ruled out with present data. Evolution of other relevant cosmological parameters, viz. density parameter ($Ω$), effective equation of state (EOS) parameter ($ω_{eff}$) are also shown.

Constraints on Exotic Matter for An Emergent Universe

We study a composition of normal and exotic matter which is required for a flat Emergent Universe scenario permitted by the equation of state (EOS)($p=Aρ-Bρ^{1/2}$) and predict the range of the permissible values for the parameters $A$ and $B$ to explore a physically viable cosmological model. The permitted values of the parameters are determined taking into account the $H(z)-z$ data obtained from observations, a model independent BAO peak parameter and CMB shift parameter (WMAP7 data). It is found that although $A$ can be very close to zero, most of the observations favours a small and negative $A$. As a consequence, the effective Equation of State parameter for this class of Emergent Universe solutions remains negative always. We also compared the magnitude ($μ(z)$) vs. redshift($z$) curve obtained in the model with that obtained from the union compilation data. According to our analysis the class of Emergent Universe solutions considered here is not ruled out by the observations.

Modified Chaplygin Gas and Constraints on its B parameter from CDM and UDME Cosmological models

We study Modified Chaplygin Gas (MCG) as a candidate for dark energy and predict the values of parameters of the gas for a physically viable cosmological model. The equation of state of MCG ($p=B ρ- \frac {A}{ρ^α} $) involves three parameters: $B$, $A$ and $α$. The permitted values of these parameters are determined with the help of dimensionless age parameter ($H_{o}t_{o}$) and $H(z)-z$ Data. Specifically we study the allowed ranges of values of B parameter in terms of $α$ and $A_{s}$ ($A_{s}$ is defined in terms of the constants in the theory). We explore the constraints of the parameters in Cold Dark Matter(CDM) model and UDME(Unified Dark Matter Energy) model respectively.

Tripartite entanglement versus tripartite nonlocality in 3-qubit GHZ-class states

We analyze the relationship between tripartite entanglement and genuine tripartite nonlocality for 3-qubit pure states in the GHZ class. We consider a family of states known as the generalized GHZ states and derive an analytical expression relating the 3-tangle, which quantifies tripartite entanglement, to the Svetlichny inequality, which is a Bell-type inequality that is violated only when all three qubits are nonlocally correlated. We show that states with 3-tangle less than 1/2 do not violate the Svetlichny inequality. On the other hand, a set of states known as the maximal slice states do violate the Svetlichny inequality, and exactly analogous to the two-qubit case, the amount of violation is directly related to the degree of tripartite entanglement. We discuss further interesting properties of the generalized GHZ and maximal slice states.

Accelerating Universe in Modified Theories of Gravity

We study cosmologies in modified theories of gravity considering Lagrangian density $f(R)$ which is a polynomial function of scalar curvature ($R$) in the Einstein-Hilbert action in vacuum. The field equation obtained from the modified action corresponding to a Robertson-Walker metric is highly non-linear and not simple enough to obtain analytic solution. Consequently we adopt a numerical technique to study the evolution of the FRW universe. A number of evolutionary phases of the universe including the present accelerating phase are found to exist in the higher derivative theories of gravity. The cosmological solutions obtained here are new and interesting. We study modified theory of gravity as a toy model to explore the past, the present and predict the future evolution. It is found that all the models analyzed here can reproduce the current accelerating phase of expansion of the universe. The duration of the present accelerating phase is found to depend on the coupling constants of the gravitational action. The physical importance of the coupling parameters those considered in the action are also discussed.

Chaos, entanglement and decoherence in the quantum kicked top

We analyze the interplay of chaos, entanglement and decoherence in a system of qubits whose collective behaviour is that of a quantum kicked top. The dynamical entanglement between a single qubit and the rest can be calculated from the mean of the collective spin operators. This allows the possibility of efficiently measuring entanglement dynamics in an experimental setting. We consider a deeply quantum regime and show that signatures of chaos are present in the dynamical entanglement for parameters accessible in an experiment that we propose using cold atoms. The evolution of the entanglement depends on the support of the initial state on regular versus chaotic Floquet eigenstates, whose phase-space distributions are concentrated on the corresponding regular or chaotic eigenstructures. We include the effect of decoherence via a realistic model and show that the signatures of chaos in the entanglement dynamics persist in the presence of decoherence. In addition, the classical chaos affects the decoherence rate itself.
