Fast Separable Non-Local Means

We propose a simple and fast algorithm called PatchLift for computing distances between patches (contiguous block of samples) extracted from a given one-dimensional signal. PatchLift is based on the observation that the patch distances can be efficiently computed from a matrix that is derived from the one-dimensional signal using lifting; importantly, the number of operations required to compute the patch distances using this approach does not scale with the patch length. We next demonstrate how PatchLift can be used for patch-based denoising of images corrupted with Gaussian noise. In particular, we propose a separable formulation of the classical Non-Local Means (NLM) algorithm that can be implemented using PatchLift. We demonstrate that the PatchLift-based implementation of separable NLM is few orders faster than standard NLM, and is competitive with existing fast implementations of NLM. Moreover, its denoising performance is shown to be consistently superior to that of NLM and some of its variants, both in terms of PSNR/SSIM and visual quality.

Compact star in pseudo-spheroidal spacetime

We investigate perfect fluid stars in $(2+1)$ dimension in pseudo spheroidal spacetime with the help of Vaidya-Tikekar metric where the physical $3$-space ($t=$ constant) is described by pseudo-spheroidal geometry. Here the spheroidicity parameter $a$, plays an important role for determining the properties of a compact star. In the present work a class of interior solutions corresponding to the Ba$\tilde{n}$ados-Teitelboim-Zanelli $(BTZ)$ (Bañados et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 69:1849, 1992) exterior metric has been provided which describes a static circularly symmetric star with negative cosmological constant in equilibrium. It is shown that asymptotically anti-de Sitter $(2+1)$ dimensional spacetime described by BTZ admits a compact star solution with reasonable physical features.

Charged gravastars in higher dimensions

We explore possibility to find out a new model of gravastars in the extended $D$-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell spacetime. The class of solutions as obtained by Mazur and Mottola of a neutral gravastar \cite{Mazur2001,Mazur2004} have been observed as an alternative to $D$-dimensional versions of the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole. To tackle the spherical system in a convenient way we have configured that the gravastar consists of three distinct regions with different equations of state as follows: [I] Interior region $0 \leq r < r_1$,$ρ= -p$, [II] Thin shell region $r_1 \leq r < r_2$,$ρ= p$, and [III] Exterior region $r_2 < r$,$ρ= p =0$. The outer region of this gravastar model therefore corresponds to a higher dimensional Reissner-Nordstr{ö}m black hole. In connection to this junction conditions are provided and therefore we have formulated mass and the related Equation of State of the gravastar. It has been shown that the model satisfies all the requirements of the physical features. However, overall observational survey of the results also provide probable indication of non-applicability of higher dimensional approach for construction of a gravastar with or without charge from an ordinary $4$-dimensional seed as far as physical ground is concerned.

Colloidal CuFeS2 Nanocrystals: Intermediate Fe d-Band Leads to High Photothermal Conversion Efficiency

We describe the colloidal hot-injection synthesis of phase-pure nanocrystals (NCs) of a highly abundant mineral, chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). Absorption bands centered at around 480 and 950 nm, spanning almost the entire visible and near infrared regions, encompass their optical extinction characteristics. These peaks are ascribable to electronic transitions from the valence band (VB) to the empty intermediate band (IB), located in the fundamental gap and mainly composed of Fe 3d orbitals. Laser-irradiation (at 808 nm) of an aqueous suspension of CuFeS2 NCs exhibited significant heating, with a photothermal conversion efficiency of 49%. Such efficient heating is ascribable to the carrier relaxation within the broad IB band (owing to the indirect VB-IB gap), as corroborated by transient absorption measurements. The intense absorption and high photothermal transduction efficiency (PTE) of these NCs in the so-called biological window (650-900 nm) makes them suitable for photothermal therapy as demonstrated by tumor cell annihilation upon laser irradiation. The otherwise harmless nature of these NCs in dark conditions was confirmed by in vitro toxicity tests on two different cell lines. The presence of the deep Fe levels constituting the IB is the origin of such enhanced PTE, which can be used to design other high performing NC photothermal agents.

Proposed low-energy absolute calibration of nuclear recoils in a dual-phase noble element TPC using D-D neutron scattering kinematics

We propose a new technique for the calibration of nuclear recoils in large noble element dual-phase time projection chambers used to search for WIMP dark matter in the local galactic halo. This technique provides an $\textit{in situ}$ measurement of the low-energy nuclear recoil response of the target media using the measured scattering angle between multiple neutron interactions within the detector volume. The low-energy reach and reduced systematics of this calibration have particular significance for the low-mass WIMP sensitivity of several leading dark matter experiments. Multiple strategies for improving this calibration technique are discussed, including the creation of a new type of quasi-monoenergetic 272 keV neutron source. We report results from a time-of-flight based measurement of the neutron energy spectrum produced by an Adelphi Technology, Inc. DD108 neutron generator, confirming its suitability for the proposed nuclear recoil calibration.

The young cluster NGC 2282 : a multi-wavelength perspective

We present the analysis of the stellar content of NGC~2282, a young cluster in the Monoceros constellation, using deep optical $BVI$ and IPHAS photometry along with infrared (IR) data from UKIDSS and $Spitzer$-IRAC. Based on the stellar surface density analysis using nearest neighborhood method, the radius of the cluster is estimated as $\sim$ 3.15$\arcmin$. From optical spectroscopic analysis of 8 bright sources, we have classified three early B-type members in the cluster, which includes, HD 289120, a previously known B2V type star, a Herbig Ae/Be star (B0.5 Ve) and a B5 V star. From spectrophotometric analyses, the distance to the cluster has been estimated as $\sim$ 1.65 kpc. The $K$-band extinction map is estimated using nearest neighborhood technique, and the mean extinction within the cluster area is found to be A$_V$ $\sim$ 3.9 mag. Using IR colour-colour criteria and H$_α$-emission properties, we have identified a total of 152 candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) in the region, of which, 75 are classified as Class II, 9 are Class I YSOs. Our YSO catalog also includes 50 H$_α$-emission line sources, identified using slitless spectroscopy and IPHAS photometry data. Based on the optical and near-IR colour-magnitude diagram analyses, the cluster age has been estimated to be in the range of 2 $-$ 5 Myr, which is in agreement with the estimated age from disc fraction ($\sim$ 58\%). Masses of these YSOs are found to be $\sim$ 0.1$-$2.0 M$_\odot$. Spatial distribution of the candidate YSOs shows spherical morphology, more or less similar to the surface density map.

Interplay of disorder and geometrical frustration in doped Gadolinium Gallium Garnet

The geometrically-frustrated, triangular antiferromagnet GGG exhibits a rich mix of short-range order and isolated quantum states. We investigate the effects of up to 1% Neodymium substitution for Gallium on the ac magnetic response at temperatures below 1 K in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. Substitutional disorder actually drives the system towards a more perfectly frustrated state, apparently compensating for the effect of imperfect Gadolinium/Gallium stoichiometry, while at the same time more closely demarcating the boundaries of isolated, coherent clusters composed of hundreds of spins. Optical measurements of the local Nd environment substantiate the picture of an increased frustration index with doping.

Intrinsic Noise Induced Coherence Resonance in a Glow discharge Plasma

Experimental evidence of intrinsic noise induced coherence resonance in a glow discharge plasma is being reported. Initially the system is started at a discharge voltage (DV) where it exhibited fixed point dynamics, and then with the subsequent increase in the DV spikes were excited which were few in number and with further increase of DV the number of spikes as well as their regularity increased. The regularity in the interspike interval of the spikes is estimated using normalized variance (NV). Coherence resonance was determined using normalized variance curve and also corroborated by Hurst exponent and power spectrum plots. We show that the regularity of the excitable spikes in the floating potential fluctuation increases with the increase in the DV, upto a particular value of DV. Using a Wiener filter, we separated the noise component which was observed to increase with DV and hence conjectured that noise can be playing an important role in the generation of the coherence resonance. From an anharmonic oscillator equation describing ion acoustic oscillations, we have been able to obtain a FHN like model which has been used to understand the excitable dynamics of glow discharge plasma in the presence of noise. The numerical results agree quite well with the experimental results.

Coherent forward scattering in 2D disordered systems

We present a detailed numerical and theoretical analysis of the recently discovered phenomenon of coherent forward scattering. This effect manifests itself as a macroscopic interference peak in the forward direction of the momentum distribution of a matter wave launched with finite velocity in a random potential. Focusing on the two-dimensional case, we show that coherent forward scattering generally arises due the confinement of the wave in a finite region of space, and explain under which conditions it can be seen as a genuine signature of Anderson localization.

Transport measurements of the spin wave gap of thin Mn films

Temperature dependent transport measurements on ultrathin antiferromagnetic Mn films reveal a heretofore unknown non-universal weak localization correction to the conductivity which extends to disorder strengths greater than 100 k$Ω$ per square. The inelastic scattering of electrons off of gapped antiferromagnetic spin waves gives rise to an inelastic scattering length which is short enough to place the system in the 3d regime. The extracted fitting parameters provide estimates of the energy gap ($Δ= 16$ K) and exchange energy ($\bar{J} = 320$ K).

On the Construction and the Cardinality of Finite $σ$-Fields

In this note, we first discuss some properties of generated $σ$-fields and a simple approach to the construction of finite $σ$-fields. It is shown that the $σ$-field generated by a finite class of $σ$-distinct sets which are also atoms, is the same as the one generated by the partition induced by them. The range of the cardinality of such a generated $σ$-field is explicitly obtained. Some typical examples and their complete forms are discussed. We discuss also a simple algorithm to find the exact cardinality of some particular finite $σ$-fields. Finally, an application of our results to statistics, with regard to independence of events, is pointed out.

New nonlinear structures in a degenerate one-dimensional electron gas

The collective dynamics of nonlinear electron waves in an one-dimensional degenerate electron gas is treated using the Lagrangian fluid approach. A new class of solutions with a nontrivial space and time dependence is derived. Both analytical and numerical results demonstrate the formation of stable, breather-like modes, provided certain conditions are meet. For large amplitude of the initial density perturbation, a catastrophic collapse of the plasma density is predicted, even in the presence of the quantum statistical pressure and quantum diffraction dispersive effects. The results are useful for the understanding of the properties of general nonlinear structures in dense plasmas.

A Tapered Chalcogenide Microstructured Optical Fiber for Mid-IR Parabolic Pulse Generation: Design and Performance Study

This paper presents a theoretical design of chalcogenide glass based tapered microstructured optical fiber (MOF) to generate high power parabolic pulses (PPs) at the mid-IR wavelength (~ 2 μm). We optimize fiber cross-section by the multipole method and studied pulse evolution by well known Symmetrized Split-Step Fourier Method. Our numerical investigation reveals the possibility of highly efficient PP generation within a very short length (~ 18 cm) of this MOF for a Gaussian input pulse of 60 W peak power and FWHM of 3.5 ps. We examined quality of the generated PP by calculating the misfit parameter including the third order dispersion and fiber loss. Further, the effects of variations in input pulse power, pulse width and pulse energy on generated PP were also studied.

An efficient broad-band mid-wave IR fiber optic light source: Design and performance simulation

Design of a mid-wave IR (MWIR) broad-band fiber-based light source exploiting four-wave mixing (FWM) in a meter long suitably designed highly nonlinear (NL) chalcogenide microstructured optical fiber (MOF) is reported. This superior FWM bandwidth (BW) was obtained through precise tailoring of the fibers dispersion profile so as to realize positive quartic dispersion at the pump wavelength. We consider an Erbium (Er3+) doped continuous wave (CW) ZBLAN fiber laser emitting at 2.8 micron as the pump source with an average power of 5 W. Amplification factor as high as 25 dB is achievable in the 3 to 3.9 microns spectral range with average power conversion efficiency more than 32 percent.

Design of an efficient Mid-IR light source using As2S3 based highly nonlinear microstructured optical fibers

We report on the design of a highly-nonlinear specialty fiber as a mid-infrared light source at 4.3 μm. A meter length of the designed solid-core chalcogenide based index-guided microstructured optical fiber (MOF) with circular air holes has been exploited to translate wavelength via four wave mixing using a thulium-doped fiber laser as the pump with a relatively low peak power of 5 W. A peak gain value of around 37 dB with full width at half maxima (FWHM) less than 3 nm is achieved.
