Heavy B Hadrons

The CDF and D0 experiments have successfully collected data since start of the Run II at the Tevatron Collider in 2001. The large B-meson production cross-section and the possibility to produce all kind of B hadron states, opened to the two collaborations the possibility to study with high precision the tiny effects of CP-violation in the Heavy B hadrons system, and to search for new physics effects in rare decays, in a way unavailable to the previous generation experiments. A new and largely unknown sector of the Heavy Flavor physics, complementary to the one already tested with precision at the B-factories, as recently pointed out by I. Bigi, has begun to be explored in search of possible signs of new physics. In this short note a selection of the most recent results on heavy B hadrons (mostly Bs mesons) from the Fermilab Tevatron, and from the Belle experiment running at the Y(5S) are reviewed.

Search for long-lived particles in ATLAS and CMS

The ATLAS and CMS detectors can be used to search for heavy long-lived particles which might signal physics beyond the Standard Model. Such new states can be distinguished from Standard Model particles by exploiting their unique signatures, ranging from multi-leptons and/or jets pro- duction anywhere within the detector volume, to minimum ionizing particles with low velocity and high momentum. Here are reviewed the strategies proposed by ATLAS and CMS to search for these signals, with particular emphasis on possible challenges to the trigger and detector operations.

Observation of $B_s^0-\bar{B}_s^0$ Oscillations and Measurement of $Δm_s$ in CDF

We report the observation of $\B_s^0-\bar{B}_s^0$ oscillations performed by the CDF II detector using a data sample of 1 $fb^{-1}$ of $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96 \TeV$. We measure the probability as a function of proper decay time that the $B_s$ decays with the same, or opposite, flavor as the flavor at production, and we find a signal for $\B_s^0-\bar{B}_s^0$ oscillations. The probability that random fluctuations could produce a comparable signal is $8 \times 10^{-8}$, which exceeds $5σ$ significance. We measure $Δm_s = 17.77 \pm{0.10} ({\rm stat}) \pm{0.07} ({\rm syst}) ps^{-1}$. A very important update has been presented by the CDF collaboration after I gave my talk, the latest available results on $B_s$ mixing are included here.

The CDFII Time-Of-Flight Detector and Impact on Beauty Flavor Tagging

The new CDFII detector incorporates a Time-of-Flight detector (TOF), employing plastic scintillator bars and fine-mesh photomultipliers. Since August 2001 the TOF system has been fully instrumented and integrated into the CDFII data acquisition system. With a design goal of $100 ps$ resolution the TOF system will provide at least two standard deviations separation between $K^{\pm}$ and $π^{\pm}$ for momenta $p<1.6 GeV/c$, complementing low momentum particle identification by means of the specific ionization energy loss measured in the drift chamber. We describe the design of the TOF detector and discuss the current status of its calibration and initial performances. Finally we review the expected impact of the TOF detector in the flavor tagging of neutral $B_S$ meson.
