Critical temperature of interacting Bose gases in two and three dimensions

We calculate the superfluid transition temperature of homogeneous interacting Bose gases in three and two spatial dimensions using large-scale Path Integral Monte Carlo simulations (with up to $N=10^5$ particles). In 3D we investigate the limits of the universal critical behavior in terms of the scattering length alone by using different models for the interatomic potential. We find that this type of universality sets in at small values of the gas parameter $na^3 \lesssim 10^{-4}$. This value is different from the estimate $na^3 \lesssim 10^{-6}$ for the validity of the asymptotic expansion in the limit of vanishing $na^3$. In 2D we study the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition of a gas with hard-core interactions. For this system we find good agreement with the classical lattice $|ψ|^4$ model up to very large densities. We also explain the origin of the existing discrepancy between previous studies of the same problem.

Phase separation in a polarized Fermi gas at zero temperature

We investigate the phase diagram of asymmetric two-component Fermi gases at zero temperature as a function of polarization and interaction strength. The equations of state of the uniform superfluid and normal phase are determined using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We find three different mixed states, where the superfluid and the normal phase coexist in equilibrium, corresponding to phase separation between: (a) the polarized superfluid and the fully polarized normal gas, (b) the polarized superfluid and the partially polarized normal gas and (c) the unpolarized superfluid and the partially polarized normal gas.

Equation of state of an interacting Bose gas at finite temperature: a Path Integral Monte Carlo study

By using exact Path Integral Monte Carlo methods we calculate the equation of state of an interacting Bose gas as a function of temperature both below and above the superfluid transition. The universal character of the equation of state for dilute systems and low temperatures is investigated by modeling the interatomic interactions using different repulsive potentials corresponding to the same s-wave scattering length. The results obtained for the energy and the pressure are compared to the virial expansion for temperatures larger than the critical temperature. At very low temperatures we find agreement with the ground-state energy calculated using the diffusion Monte Carlo method.

Normal state of a polarized Fermi gas at unitarity

We study the Fermi gas at unitarity and at T=0 by assuming that, at high polarizations, it is a normal Fermi liquid composed of weakly interacting quasiparticles associated with the minority spin atoms. With a quantum Monte Carlo approach we calculate their effective mass and binding energy, as well as the full equation of state of the normal phase as a function of the concentration x=n_\down/n_\up of minority atoms. We predict a first order phase transition from normal to superfluid at x_c=0.44 corresponding, in the presence of harmonic trapping, to a critical polarization P_c=(N_\up-N_\down)/ (N_\up+N_\down)=77%. We calculate the radii and the density profiles in the trap and predict that the frequency of the spin dipole mode will be increased by a factor of 1.23 due to interactions.

Pair correlations of an expanding superfluid Fermi gas

The pair correlation function of an expanding gas is investigated with an emphasis on the BEC-BCS crossover of a superfluid Fermi gas at zero temperature. At unitarity quantum Monte Carlo simulations reveal the occurrence of a sizable bunching effect due to interactions in the spin up-down channel which, at short distances, is larger than that exhibited by thermal bosons in the Hanbury-Brown and Twiss effect. We propose a local equilibrium ansatz for the pair correlation function which we predict will remain isotropic during the expansion even if the trapping potential is anisotropic, contrary to what happens for non-interacting gases. This behavior is understood to be a consequence of the violation of scaling of the pair correlation function due to interactions.

Released momentum distribution of a Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover

We develop a time-dependent mean-field theory to investigate the released momentum distribution and the released energy of an ultracold Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover after the scattering length has been set to zero by a fast magnetic-field ramp. For a homogeneous gas we analyze the non-equilibrium dynamics of the system as a function of the interaction strength and of the ramp speed. For a trapped gas the theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results.

Molecular signatures in the structure factor of an interacting Fermi gas

The static and dynamic structure factors of an interacting Fermi gas along the BCS-BEC crossover are calculated at momentum transfer $\hbar{\bf k}$ higher than the Fermi momentum. The spin structure factor is found to be very sensitive to the correlations associated with the formation of molecules. On the BEC side of the crossover, even close to unitarity, clear evidence is found for a molecular excitation at $\hbar^2 k^2 /4m$, where $m$ is the atomic mass. Both quantum Monte Carlo and dynamic mean-field results are presented.

Correlation functions of a Lieb-Liniger Bose gas

The ground-state correlation functions of a one-dimensional homogeneous Bose system described by the Lieb-Liniger Hamiltonian are investigated by using exact quantum Monte Carlo techniques. This article is an extension of a previous study published in Phys. Rev. A {\bf 68}, 031602 (2003). New results on the local three-body correlator as a function of the interaction strength are included and compared with the measured value from three-body loss experiments. We also carry out a thorough study of the short- and long-range behavior of the one-body density matrix.

Momentum distribution of a Fermi gas of atoms in the BCS-BEC crossover

We observe dramatic changes in the atomic momentum distribution of a Fermi gas in the region of the BCS-BEC crossover. We study the shape of the momentum distribution and the kinetic energy as a function of interaction strength. The momentum distributions are compared to a mean-field crossover theory, and the kinetic energy is compared to theories for the two weakly interacting limits. The temperature dependence of the distribution is also presented.

Momentum distribution and condensate fraction of a Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover

By using the diffusion Monte Carlo method we calculate the one- and two-body density matrix of an interacting Fermi gas at T=0 in the BCS-BEC crossover. Results for the momentum distribution of the atoms, as obtained from the Fourier transform of the one-body density matrix, are reported as a function of the interaction strength. Off-diagonal long-range order in the system is investigated through the asymptotic behavior of the two-body density matrix. The condensate fraction of fermionic pairs is calculated in the unitary limit and on both sides of the BCS-BEC crossover.

Quantum Monte Carlo simulation of a two-dimensional Bose gas

The equation of state of a homogeneous two-dimensional Bose gas is calculated using quantum Monte Carlo methods. The low-density universal behavior is investigated using different interatomic model potentials, both finite-ranged and strictly repulsive and zero-ranged supporting a bound state. The condensate fraction and the pair distribution function are calculated as a function of the gas parameter, ranging from the dilute to the strongly correlated regime. In the case of the zero-range pseudopotential we discuss the stability of the gas-like state for large values of the two-dimensional scattering length, and we calculate the critical density where the system becomes unstable against cluster formation.

Equation of state of a Fermi gas in the BEC-BCS crossover: a quantum Monte Carlo study

We calculate the equation of state of a two-component Fermi gas with attractive short-range interspecies interactions using the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo method. The interaction strength is varied over a wide range by tuning the value $a$ of the s-wave scattering length of the two-body potential. For $a>0$ and $a$ smaller than the inverse Fermi wavevector our results show a molecular regime with repulsive interactions well described by the dimer-dimer scattering length $a_m=0.6 a$. The pair correlation functions of parallel and opposite spins are also discussed as a function of the interaction strength.

Beyond Tonks-Girardeau: strongly correlated regime in quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases

We consider a homogeneous 1D Bose gas with contact interactions and large attractive coupling constant. This system can be realized in tight waveguides by exploiting a confinement induced resonance of the effective 1D scattering amplitude. By using a variational {\it ansatz} for the many-body wavefunction, we show that for small densities the gas-like state is stable and the corresponding equation of state is well described by a gas of hard rods. By calculating the compressibility of the system, we provide an estimate of the critical density at which the gas-like state becomes unstable against cluster formation. Within the hard-rod model we calculate the one-body density matrix and the static structure factor of the gas. The results show that in this regime the system is more strongly correlated than a Tonks-Girardeau gas. The frequency of the lowest breathing mode for harmonically trapped systems is also discussed as a function of the interaction strength.

Interacting fermions in quasi-one-dimensional harmonic traps

Quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1d) two-component Fermi gases with effectively attractive and repulsive interactions are characterized for arbitrary interaction strength. The ground-state properties of the gas confined in highly elongated harmonic traps are determined within the local density approximation. For strong attractive effective interactions the existence of a molecular Tonks-Girardeau gas is predicted. The frequency of the lowest breathing mode is calculated as a function of the coupling strength for both attractive and repulsive interactions.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases

We study the behavior of quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1d) Bose gases by Monte Carlo techniques, i.e., by the variational Monte Carlo, the diffusion Monte Carlo, and the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo technique. Our calculations confirm and extend our results of an earlier study [Astrakharchik et al., cond-mat/0308585]. We find that a quasi-1d Bose gas i) is well described by a 1d model Hamiltonian with contact interactions and renormalized coupling constant; ii) reaches the Tonks-Girardeau regime for a critical value of the 3d scattering length a_3d; iii) enters a unitary regime for |a_3d| -> infinity, where the properties of the gas are independent of a_3d and are similar to those of a 1d gas of hard-rods; and iv) becomes unstable against cluster formation for a critical value of the 1d gas parameter. The accuracy and implications of our results are discussed in detail.

Quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases with large scattering length

Bose gases confined in highly-elongated harmonic traps are investigated over a wide range of interaction strengths using quantum Monte Carlo techniques. We find that the properties of a Bose gas under tight transverse confinement are well reproduced by a 1d model Hamiltonian with contact interactions. We point out the existence of a unitary regime, where the properties of the quasi-1d Bose gas become independent of the actual value of the 3d scattering length. In this unitary regime, the energy of the system is well described by a hard rod equation of state. We investigate the stability of quasi-1d Bose gases with positive and negative 3d scattering length.

Momentum distribution of a trapped Fermi gas with large scattering length

Using a scattering length parametrization of the BCS-BEC crossover as well as the local density approximation for the density profile, we calculate the momentum distribution of a harmonically trapped atomic Fermi gas at zero temperature. Various interaction regimes are considered, including the BCS phase, the unitarity limit and the molecular regime. We show that the relevant parameter which characterizes the crossover is given by the dimensionless combination $N^{1/6}a/a_{ho}$, where $N$ is the number of atoms, $a$ is the scattering length and $a_{ho}$ is the oscillator length. The width of the momentum distribution is shown to depend in a crucial way on the value and sign of this parameter. Our predictions can be relevant for experiments on ultracold atomic Fermi gases near a Feshbach resonance.

Correlation functions and momentum distribution of one-dimensional Bose systems

The ground-state correlation properties of a one-dimensional Bose system described by the Lieb-Liniger Hamiltonian are investigated by using exact quantum Monte Carlo techniques. The pair distribution function, static structure factor, one-body density matrix and momentum distribution of a homogeneous system are calculated for different values of the gas parameter ranging from the Tonks-Girardeau to the mean-field regime. Results for the momentum distribution of a harmonically trapped gas in configurations relevant to experiments are also presented.
