MESA Technical Note: Beam Breakup Instability Threshold Current

MESA (Mainz Energy recovery Superconducting Accelerator) is an energy recovery linac (ERL) which is under construction at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. It will be operated in external beam (EB) mode with 150 $μ$A electron beam at 155 MeV and energy recovery (ER) mode with 1 mA (first stage) and later 10 mA (second stage) electron beam at 105 MeV. An important factor which may limit performance of the machine is a beam breakup (BBU) instability which may occur due to excitation of higher-order modes (HOMs) in superconducting RF cavities. This effect occurs only when the injected beam current exceeds a threshold value. The aim of the present work is to develop a software for reliable determination of the threshold current in MESA, find main factors which may change its value and finally make a decision concerning capability of MESA operation at 10 mA and need for additional measures for suppressing BBU instability.

Dynamic aperture limitation in $e^+e^-$ colliders due to synchrotron radiation in quadrupoles

In a lepton storage ring of very high energy (e.g. in the $e^+e^-$ Higgs factory) synchrotron radiation from quadrupoles constrains transverse dynamic aperture even in the absence of any magnetic nonlinearities. This was observed in tracking for LEP and the Future Circular $e^+e^-$ Collider (FCC-ee). Here we describe a new mechanism of instability created by modulation of the particle energy at the double betatron frequency by synchrotron radiation in the quadrupoles. Energy modulation varies transverse focusing strength at the same frequency and creates a parametric resonance of the betatron oscillations with unusual properties. It occurs at arbitrary betatron frequency (the resonant detuning is always zero) and the magnitude of the parameter modulation of the betatron oscillation (strength of the resonance driving term) depends on the oscillation amplitude. Equilibrium between the radiation damping and the resonant excitation gives the boundary of the stable motion. Starting from 6d equations of motion we derive and solve the relevant differential equation describing the resonance, and show good agreement between analytical results and numerical simulation.

Effect of the Sextupole Finite Length on Dynamic Aperture in the Collider Final Focus

In a collider final focus (FF) system chromaticity generated by FF quadrupoles is compensated by sextupole pairs with -I map in between to cancel geometrical aberrations. However, it works perfectly only for zero-length sextupole kicks; for realistic thick magnets only quadratic aberrations are cancelled exactly while higher order terms appear and may deteriorate the transverse dynamic aperture. The latter is particularly important for prospective projects of the future circular colliders based on the Crab-Waist collision approach where extremely low beta at IP generates very large chromatic effects. In the present paper, we study these high aberrations by the power series technique and propose the method of the dynamic aperture recover. Results of analytic study are compared with those obtained by tracking.
