Dynamics of spatial coherence and momentum distribution of polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity under conditions of Bose-Einstein condensation

The dynamics of spatial coherence and momentum distribution of polaritons in the regime of Bose-Einstein condensation are investigated in a GaAs microcavity with embedded quantum wells under nonresonant excitation with picosecond laser pulses. It is shown that the onset of the condensate first order sparial coherence is accompanied by narrowing of the polariton momentum distribution. At the same time, at sufficiently high excitation densities, there is significant qualitative discrepancy between the dynamic behavior of the width of the polariton momentum distribution determined from direct measurements and that calculated from the coherence spatial distribution. This discrepancy is observed at the fast initial stage of the polariton system kinetics and, apparently, results from the strong spatial nonuniformity of the phase of the condensate wave function, which equilibrates on a much longer time scale.

Monolayer MoSe2: A candidate for room temperature polaritonics

Monolayered MoSe2 is a promising new material to investigate advanced light-matter coupling as it hosts stable and robust excitons with comparably narrow optical resonances. In this work, we investigate the evolution of the lowest lying excitonic transition, the so-called A-valley exciton, with temperature. We find a strong, phonon-induced temperature broadening of the resonance, and more importantly, a reduction of the oscillator strength for increased temperatures. Based on these experimentally extracted, temperature dependent parameters, we apply a coupled oscillator model to elucidate the possibility to observe the strong coupling regime between the A-exciton and a microcavity resonance in three prototypical photonic architectures with varying mode volumes. We find that the formation of exciton-polaritons up to ambient conditions in short, monolithic dielectric and Tamm-based structures seems feasible. In contrast, a temperature-induced transition into the weak coupling regime can be expected for structures with extended effective cavity length. Based on these findings, we calculate and draw the phase diagram of polariton Bosonic condensation in a MoSe2 cavity.

Talbot effect for exciton-polaritons

We demonstrate, experimentally and theoretically, a Talbot effect for hybrid light-matter waves -- exciton-polariton condensate formed in a semiconductor microcavity with embedded quantum wells. The characteristic 'Talbot carpet' is produced by loading the exciton-polariton condensate into a microstructured one dimensional periodic array of mesa traps, which creates an array of sources for coherent polariton flow in the plane of the quantum wells. The spatial distribution of the Talbot fringes outside the mesas mimics the near-field diffraction of a monochromatic wave on a periodic amplitude and phase grating with the grating period comparable to the wavelength. Despite the lossy nature of the polariton system, the Talbot pattern persists for distances exceeding the size of the mesas by an order of magnitude.

Photon echo transients from an inhomogeneous ensemble of semiconductor quantum dots

An ensemble of quantum dot excitons may be used for coherent information manipulation. Due to the ensemble inhomogeneity any optical information retrieval occurs in form of a photon echo. We show that the inhomogeneity can lead to a significant deviation from the conventional echo timing sequence. Variation of the area of the initial rotation pulse, which generates excitons in a dot sub-ensemble only, reveals this complex picture of photon echo formation. We observe a retarded echo for π/2 pulses, while for 3π/2 the echo is advanced in time as evidenced through monitoring the Rabi oscillations in the time-resolved photon echo amplitude from (In,Ga)As/GaAs self-assembled quantum dot structures and confirmed by detailed calculations.

Multi-Wave Coherent Control of a Solid State Single Emitter

Coherent control of individual two-level systems (TLSs) is at the basis of any implementation of quantum information. An impressive level of control is now achieved using nuclear, vacancies and charge spins. Manipulation of bright exciton transitions in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) is less advanced, principally due to the sub-nanosecond dephasing. Conversely, owing to their robust coupling to light, one can apply tools of nonlinear spectroscopy to achieve all-optical command. Here, we report on the coherent manipulation of an exciton via multi-wave mixing. Specifically, we employ three resonant pulses driving a single InAs QD. The first two induce a four-wave mixing (FWM) transient, which is projected onto a six-wave mixing (SWM) depending on the delay and area of the third pulse, in agreement with analytical predictions. Such a switch enables to demonstrate the generation of SWM on a single emitter and to engineer the spectro-temporal shape of the coherent response originating from a TLS. These results pave the way toward multi-pulse manipulations of solid state qubits via implementing the NMR-like control schemes in the optical domain.

Collective state transitions of exciton-polaritons loaded into a periodic potential

We study the loading of a nonequilibrium, dissipative system of composite bosons -- exciton polaritons -- into a one dimensional periodic lattice potential. Utilizing momentum resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, we observe a transition between an incoherent Bose gas and a polariton condensate, which undergoes further transitions between different energy states in the band-gap spectrum of the periodic potential with increasing pumping power. We demonstrate controlled loading into distinct energy bands by modifying the size and shape of the excitation beam. The observed effects are comprehensively described in the framework of a nonequilibrium model of polariton condensation. In particular, we implement a stochastic treatment of quantum and thermal fluctuations in the system and confirm that polariton-phonon scattering is a key energy relaxation mechanism enabling transitions from the highly nonequilibrium polariton condensate in the gap to the ground band condensation for large pump powers.

Controlling circular polarization of light emitted by quantum dots using chiral photonic crystal slab

We study the polarization properties of light emitted by quantum dots that are embedded in chiral photonic crystal structures made of achiral planar GaAs waveguides. A modification of the electromagnetic mode structure due to the chiral grating fabricated by partial etching of the wave\-guide layer has been shown to result in a high circular polarization degree $ρ_c$ of the quantum dot emission in the absence of external magnetic field. The physical nature of the phenomenon can be understood in terms of the reciprocity principle taking into account the structural symmetry. At the resonance wavelength, the magnitude of $|ρ_c|$ is predicted to exceed 98%. The experimentally achieved value of $|ρ_c|=81$% is smaller, which is due to the contribution of unpolarized light scattered by grating defects, thus breaking its periodicity. The achieved polarization degree estimated removing the unpolarized nonresonant background from the emission spectra can be estimated to be as high as 96%, close to the theoretical prediction.

Broadband indistinguishability from bright parametric downconversion in a semiconductor waveguide

Parametric downconversion (PDC) in semiconductor Bragg-reflection waveguides (BRW) is routinely exploited for photon-pair generation in the telecommunication range. Contrary to many conventional PDC sources, BRWs offer possibilities to create spectrally broadband but nevertheless indistinguishable photon pairs in orthogonal polarizations that simultaneously incorporate high frequency entanglement. We explore the characteristics of co-propagating twin beams created in a type-II ridge BRW. Our PDC source is bright and efficient, which serves as a benchmark of its performance and justifies its exploitation for further use in quantum photonics. We then examine the coalescence of the twin beams and investigate the effect of their inevitable multi-photon contributions on the observed photon bunching. Our results show that BRWs have a great potential for producing broadband indistinguishable photon pairs as well as multi-photon states.

Modally Resolved Fabry-Perot Experiment with Semiconductor Waveguides

Based on the interaction between different spatial modes, semiconductor Bragg-reflection waveguides provide a highly functional platform for non-linear optics. Therefore, the control and engineering of the properties of each spatial mode is essential. Despite the multimodeness of our waveguide, the well-established Fabry-Perot technique for recording fringes in the optical transmission spectrum can successfully be employed for a detailed linear optical characterization when combined with Fourier analysis. A prerequisite for the modal sensitivity is a finely resolved transmission spectrum that is recorded over a broad frequency band. Our results highlight how the features of different spatial modes, such as their loss characteristics and dispersion properties, can be separated from each other allowing their comparison. The mode-resolved measurements are important for optimizing the performance of such multimode waveguides by tailoring the properties of their spatial modes.

Observation of non-Hermitian degeneracies in a chaotic exciton-polariton billiard

Exciton-polaritons are hybrid light-matter quasiparticles formed by strongly interacting photons and excitons (electron-hole pairs) in semiconductor microcavities. They have emerged as a robust solid-state platform for next-generation optoelectronic applications as well as fundamental studies of quantum many-body physics. Importantly, exciton-polaritons are a profoundly open (i.e., non-Hermitian) quantum system: it requires constant pumping of energy and continuously decays releasing coherent radiation. Thus, the exciton-polaritons always exist in a balanced potential landscape of gain and loss. However, the inherent non-Hermitian nature of this potential has so far been largely ignored in exciton-polariton physics. Here we demonstrate that non-Hermiticity dramatically modifies the structure of modes and spectral degeneracies in exciton-polariton systems, and, therefore, will affect their quantum transport, localisation, and dynamical properties. Using a spatially-structured optical pump, we create a chaotic exciton-polariton billiard. Eigenmodes of this billiard exhibit multiple non-Hermitian spectral degeneracies -- exceptional points. These are known to cause remarkable wave phenomena, such as unidirectional transport, anomalous lasing/absorption, and chiral modes. By varying parameters of the billiard, we observe crossing and anti-crossing of energy levels and reveal the nontrivial topological modal structure exclusive to non-Hermitian systems. We also observe the mode switching and topological Berry phase for a parameter loop encircling the exceptional point. Our findings pave the way for studies of non-Hermitian quantum dynamics of exciton-polaritons, which can lead to novel functionalities of polariton-based devices.

Single Semiconductor Quantum Dots in Microcavities: Bright sources of indistinguishable Photons

In this chapter we will discuss the technology and experimental techniques to realize quantum dot (QD) single photon sources combining high outcoupling efficiencies and highest degrees of non-postselected photon indistinguishability. The system, which is based on ultra low density InAs QDs embedded in a quasi planar single sided microcavity with natural photonic traps is an ideal testbed to study quantum light emission from single QDs. We will discuss the influence of the excitation conditions on the purity of the single photon emission, and in particular on the degree of indistinguishability of the emitted photons. While high purity triggered emission of single photons is observed under all tested excitation conditions, single photon interference effects can be almost vanish in experiments relying on non-resonant pumping into the quantum dot wetting layer. In contrast, we can observe nearly perfect indistinguishability of single photons in resonance fluorescence excitation conditions, which underlines the superiority of this excitation scheme to create photon wave packets close to the Fourier limit. As a first step towards the realization of solid state quantum networks based on quantum dot single photon sources we test the overlap of photons emitted from remote QDs yielding non-postselected interference visibilities on the order of ~40% for quasi resonant excitation.

Enhanced single photon emission from positioned InP/GaInP quantum dots coupled to a confined Tamm-plasmon mode

We report on the enhancement of the spontaneous emission in the visible red spectral range from site-controlled InP/GaInP quantum dots by resonant coupling to Tammplasmon modes confined beneath gold disks in a hybrid metal/semiconductor structure. The enhancement of the emission intensity is confirmed by spatially resolved microphotoluminescence area scans and temperature dependent measurements. Single photon emission from our coupled system is verified via second order autocorrelation measurements. We observe bright single quantum dot emission of up to ~173000 detected photons per second at a repetition rate of the excitation source of 82 MHz, and calculate an extraction efficiency of our device as high as 7%.

Spatial Coherence Properties of One-Dimensional Exciton-Polariton-Condensates

In this work, we combine a systematic experimental investigation of the power- and temperaturedependent evolution of the spatial coherence function, g(1) (r), in a one-dimensional excitonpolariton channel with a modern microscopic numerical theory based on a stochastic master equation approach. The spatial coherence function g(1) (r) is extracted via high-precision Michelson interferometry, which allows us to demonstrate that in the regime of non-resonant excitation, the dependence g(1) (r) reaches a saturation value with a plateau, determined by the intensity of pump and effective temperature of the crystal lattice. The theory, which was extended to allow for treating incoherent excitation in a stochastic frame, matches the experimental data with good qualitative and quantitative agreement. This allows us to verify the prediction that the decay of the off-diagonal long range order can be almost fully suppressed in one-dimensional condensate systems.

Dynamically Controlled Resonance Fluorescence from a Doubly Dressed Solid-State Single Emitter

We report the first experimental demonstration of interference-induced spectral line elimination predicted by Zhu and Scully [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 388 (1996)] and Ficek and Rudolph [Phys. Rev. A 60, 4245 (1999)]. We drive an exciton transition of a self-assembled quantum dot in order to realize a two-level system exposed to bichromatic laser field and observe nearly complete elimination of the resonance fluorescence spectral line at the driving laser frequency. This is caused by quantum interference between coupled transitions among the doubly dressed excitonic states, without population trapping. We also demonstrate multiphoton ac Stark effect with shifted subharmonic resonances and dynamical modifications of resonance fluorescence spectra by using double dressing.

Waveguide photon-number-resolving detectors for quantum photonic integrated circuits

Quantum photonic integration circuits are a promising approach to scalable quantum processing with photons. Waveguide single-photon-detectors (WSPDs) based on superconducting nanowires have been recently shown to be compatible with single-photon sources for a monolithic integration. While standard WSPDs offer single-photon sensitivity, more complex superconducting nanowire structures can be configured to have photon-number-resolving capability. In this work, we present waveguide photon-number-resolving detectors (WPNRDs) on GaAs/Al0.75Ga0.25As ridge waveguides based on a series connection of nanowires. The detection of 0-4 photons has been demonstrated with a four-wire WPNRD, having a single electrical read-out. A device quantum efficiency ~24 % is reported at 1310 nm for the TE polarization.

Coherence expansion and polariton condensate formation in a semiconductor microcavity

The dynamics of the expansion of the first order spatial coherence g(1) for a polariton system in a high-Q GaAs microcavity was investigated on the basis of Young's double slit experiment under 3 ps pulse excitation at the conditions of polariton Bose-Einstein condensation. It was found that in the process of condensate formation the coherence expands with a constant velocity of about 10^8 cm/s. The measured coherence is smaller than that in thermally equilibrium system during the growth of condensate density and well exceeds it at the end of condensate decay. The onset of spatial coherence is governed by polariton relaxation while condensate amplitude and phase fluctuations are not suppressed.

Spin multistability of cavity polaritons in a magnetic field

Spin transitions are studied theoretically and experimentally in a resonantly excited system of cavity polaritons in a magnetic field. Weak pair interactions in this boson system make possible fast and massive spin flips occurring at critical amplitudes due to the interplay between amplitude dependent shifts of eigenstates and the Zeeman splitting. Dominant spin of a condensate can be toggled forth and back by tuning of the pump intensity only, which opens the way for ultra-fast spin switchings of polariton condensates on a picosecond timescale.

Intensity fluctuations in bimodal micropillar lasers enhanced by quantum-dot gain competition

We investigate correlations between orthogonally polarized cavity modes of a bimodal micropillar laser with a single layer of self-assembled quantum dots in the active region. While one emission mode of the microlaser demonstrates a characteristic s-shaped input-output curve, the output intensity of the second mode saturates and even decreases with increasing injection current above threshold. Measuring the photon auto-correlation function g^{(2)}(τ) of the light emission confirms the onset of lasing in the first mode with g^{(2)}(0) approaching unity above threshold. In contrast, strong photon bunching associated with super-thermal values of g^{(2)}(0) is detected for the other mode for currents above threshold. This behavior is attributed to gain competition of the two modes induced by the common gain material, which is confirmed by photon crosscorrelation measurements revealing a clear anti-correlation between emission events of the two modes. The experimental studies are in excellent qualitative agreement with theoretical studies based on a microscopic semiconductor theory, which we extend to the case of two modes interacting with the common gain medium. Moreover, we treat the problem by an extended birth-death model for two interacting modes, which reveals, that the photon probability distribution of each mode has a double peak structure, indicating switching behavior of the modes for the pump rates around threshold.
