Open loci of ideals with applications to Birational maps

In this work we show that the loci of ideals in principal class, ideals of grade at least two, and ideals of maximal analytic spread are Zariski open sets in the parameter space. As an application, we show that the set of birational maps of {\it clear polynomial degree} $d$ over an arbitrary projective variety $X$, denoted by $\Bir(X)_{d}$, is a constructible set. This extends a previous result by Blanc and Furter.

Bounds for the degree and Betti sequences along a graded resolution

The main goal of this paper is to size up the minimal graded free resolution of a homogeneous ideal in terms of its generating degrees. By and large, this is too ambitious an objective. As understood, sizing up means looking closely at the two available parameters: the shifts and the Betti numbers. Since, in general, bounds for the shifts can behave quite steeply, we filter the difficulty by the subadditivity of the syzygies. The method we applied is hopefully new and sheds additional light on the structure of the minimal free resolution. We use the Boij-Söderberg techniques for the Betti numbers to get polynomial upper bounds for them. It is expected that the landscape of hypersurface singularities already contains most of the difficult corners of the arbitrary case. In this regard, we treat some facets of this case, including an improvement of one of the basic results of a recent work by Busé--Dimca--Schenck--Sticlaru.

Degree of Rational Maps versus Syzygies

One proves a far-reaching upper bound for the degree of a generically finite rational map between projective varieties over a base field of arbitrary characteristic. The bound is expressed as a product of certain degrees that appear naturally by considering the Rees algebra (blowup) of the base ideal defining the map. Several special cases are obtained as consequences, some of which cover and extend previous results in the literature.

Residual Intersections and the Annihilator of Koszul Homologies

Cohen-Macaulayness, unmixedness, the structure of the canonical module and the stability of the Hilbert function of algebraic residual intersections are studied in this paper. Some conjectures about these properties are established for large classes of residual intersections without restricting local number of generators of the ideals involved. A family of approximation complexes for residual intersections is constructed to determine the above properties. Moreover some general properties of the symmetric powers of quotient ideals are determined which were not known even for special ideals with a small number of generators. Acyclicity of a prime case of these complexes is shown to be equivalent to find a common annihilator for higher Koszul homologies. So that, a tight relation between residual intersections and the uniform annihilator of positive Koszul homologies is unveiled that sheds some light on their structure.

Plane Cremona maps: saturation and regularity of the base ideal

One studies plane Cremona maps by focusing on the ideal theoretic and homological properties of its homogeneous base ideal ("indeterminacy locus"). The {\em leitmotiv} driving a good deal of the work is the relation between the base ideal and its saturation. As a preliminary one deals with the homological features of arbitrary codimension 2 homogeneous ideals in a polynomial ring in three variables over a field which are generated by three forms of the same degree. The results become sharp when the saturation is not generated in low degrees, a condition to be given a precise meaning. An implicit goal, illustrated in low degrees, is a homological classification of plane Cremona maps according to the respective homaloidal types. An additional piece of this work relates the base ideal of a rational map to a few additional homogeneous "companion" ideals, such as the integral closure, the $\boldsymbolμ$-fat ideal and a seemingly novel ideal defined in terms of valuations.

A characteristic free criterion of birationality

One develops {\em ab initio} the theory of rational/birational maps over reduced, but not necessarily irreducible, projective varieties in arbitrary characteristic. A numerical invariant of a rational map is introduced, called the Jacobian dual rank. It is proved that a rational map in this general setup is birational if and only if the Jacobian dual rank attains its maximal possible value. Even in the "classical" case where the source variety is irreducible there is some gain for this invariant over the degree of the map as it is, on one hand, intrinsically related to natural constructions in commutative algebra and, on the other hand, is effectively straightforwardly computable. Applications are given to results so far only known in characteristic zero. In particular, the surprising result of Dolgachev concerning the degree of a plane polar Cremona map is given an alternative conceptual angle.

Linkage of modules over Cohen-Macaulay rings

Inspired by the works in linkage theory of ideals, the concept of sliding depth of extension modules is defined to prove the Cohen-Macaulyness of linked module if the base ring is merely Cohen-Macaulay. Some relations between this new condition and other module-theory conditions such as G-dimension and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay are established. By the way several already known theorems in linkage theory are improved or recovered by new approaches.

Ideals Whose First Two Betti Numbers are Close

For an ideal $I$ of a Noetherian local ring $(R,\fm,k)$ we show that $\bt_1^R(I)-\bt_0^R(I)\geq -1$. It is demonstrated that some residual intersections of an ideal $I$ for which $\bt_1^R(I)-\bt_0^R(I)= -1\;\text{or}\;0$ are perfect. Some relations between Betti numbers and Bass numbers of the canonical module are studied.

Asymptotic Behaviour and Artinian Property of Graded Local Cohomology Modules

In this paper, considering the difference between the finiteness dimension and cohomological dimension for a finitely generated module, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of grades of components of graded local cohomology modules with respect to irrelevant ideal; as long as we study some artinian and tameness property of such modules.

On Vanishing and Cofiniteness of Generalized Local Cohomology Modules

In this paper, some results on vanishing and non-vanishing of generalized local cohomology modules are presented and some relations between those modules and, Ext and ordinary local cohomology modules are studied. Also, several cofiniteness propositions for generalized local cohomology modules are established which, among other things, provide an alternative answer to a question in [Y2].

A note on quasi-Gorenstein rings

In this paper, after giving a criterion for a Noetherian local ring to be quasi-Gorenstein, we obtain some sufficient conditions for a quasi- Gorenstein ring to be Gorenstein. In the course, we provide a slight generalization of a theorem of Evans and Griffith.
