Probing unexplored spin-dependent dark matter-proton coupling with few-photoelectron threshold in COSINE-100

We report new constraints on the spin-dependent scattering cross section between low-mass dark matter and protons using data collected by the COSINE-100 experiment. By implementing a specialized event selection process using a multi-layer perceptron and robust noise mitigation, this analysis pioneers a detection threshold of 3 and 4 isolated peaks, corresponding to the reconstructed photoelectrons, which are significantly lower than the 8 photoelectron threshold used in previous analyses. In this unstudied few-photoelectron regime, where instrumental noise and phosphorescence are prevalent, we utilize a phenomenological background model to search for the annual modulation signal expected from the Standard Halo Model. No statistically significant annual modulation is observed in our data. We derive new 90% confidence level (C.L.) upper limits for the spin-dependent DM-proton cross section, establishing the world's most stringent constraints in the 1.75-2.25 GeV/c$^2$ mass range. Furthermore, by incorporating the Migdal effect, we extend the experimental sensitivity to the sub-GeV/c$^2$ regime, setting world-leading limits in the 15-58 MeV/c$^2$ range. These results demonstrate the capability of NaI(Tl) target materials to probe previously unexplored regions of the dark matter parameter space.

Search for Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background with 956.2 days of Super-Kamiokande Gadolinium Dataset

We report the search result for the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background (DSNB) in neutrino energies beyond 9.3~MeV in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector with $22,500\times956.2$$~\rm m^3\cdot day$ exposure. %$22.5{\rm k}\times956.2$$~\rm m^3\cdot day$ exposure. Starting in the summer of 2020, SK introduced 0.01\% gadolinium (Gd) by mass into its ultra-pure water to enhance the neutron capture signal, termed the SK-VI phase. This was followed by a 0.03\% Gd-loading in 2022, a phase referred to as SK-VII. We then conducted a DSNB search using 552.2~days of SK-VI data and 404.0~days of SK-VII data through September 2023. This analysis includes several new features, such as two new machine-learning neutron detection algorithms with Gd, an improved atmospheric background reduction technique, and two parallel statistical approaches. No significant excess over background predictions was found in a DSNB spectrum-independent analysis, and 90\% C.L. upper limits on the astrophysical electron anti-neutrino flux were set. Additionally, a spectral fitting result exhibited a $\sim1.2σ$ disagreement with a null DSNB hypothesis, comparable to a previous result from 5823~days of all SK pure water phases.

Measurement of the solar neutrino interaction rate below 3.49 MeV in Super-Kamiokande-IV

Super-Kamiokande (SK) has observed $^{8}\text{B}$ solar neutrino elastic scattering at recoil electron kinetic energies ($E_{\text{kin}}$) as low as 3.49 MeV to study neutrino flavor conversion within the Sun. At SK-observable energies, these conversions are dominated by the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein (MSW) effect. An upturn in the electron neutrino survival probability in which vacuum neutrino oscillations become dominant is predicted to occur at lower energies, but radioactive background increases exponentially with decreasing energy. New machine learning approaches provide substantial background reduction below 3.49 MeV such that statistical extraction of solar neutrino interactions becomes feasible. This article presents an analysis of the solar neutrino interaction rate at $E_{\text{kin}}$ < 3.49 MeV with the full SK-IV period, using data from a wideband intelligent trigger when available and with a boosted decision tree for event selection. A solar neutrino signal is observed between 2.99 MeV < $E_{\text{kin}}$ < 3.49 MeV with $2.76σ$ significance and a data to unoscillated Monte Carlo ratio of $0.307^{+0.112}_{-0.111}$. These additional low-energy data have a negligible effect on the $1σ$ intervals of the fits to the solar neutrino energy spectrum but have a noticeable effect on the best fit when using the exponential parametrization.

Charge dynamics in the Weyl semimetals NbIrTe$_4$ and TaIrTe$_4$ under pressure: Signatures of an electronic phase transition

A high-pressure investigation of the Weyl semimetals NbIrTe$_4$ and TaIrTe$_4$ is presented, using infrared spectroscopy supplemented by density functional theory calculations. The experimental optical conductivity spectra as a function of pressure suggest the occurrence of a pressure-induced phase transition at a critical pressure $P_\text{c}=7\text{--}8$ GPa. This transition is most likely electronic in nature, as Raman scattering measurements provide no evidence of a significant structural phase transition. Above $P_\text{c}$ a significant redistribution of spectral weight occurs in the optical conductivity spectrum for both materials. A Drude-Lorentz analysis of the optical data indicates a sharp reduction in the free carrier concentration at $P_\text{c}$, concomitant with the appearance of a low-energy phonon, which was initially screened by free charge carriers. A predominantly electronic origin of the phase transition is supported by the calculated electronic band structure, Fermi surface, and interband optical conductivity as a function of pressure. Our findings provide collective evidence for a pressure-induced, most likely electronic phase transition in both van der Waals materials at $P_\text{c}=7\text{--}8$ GPa, highlighting the tunability of their electronic band structure by hydrostatic pressure.

Tuning the low-energy band structure in twisted bilayer WSe2

Tuning the electronic structures of two-dimensional (2D) material-based heterostructures is of crucial importance for their use in functional next-generation electronics. Here, through angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with nanoscale spatial resolution (nano-ARPES), we systematically track the evolution of the near-Fermi-level electronic structure of bilayer WSe2 over a large range of twist angle. While the momentum positioning of the valence band maxima is independent of twist angle, we find that the energetic separation between the hole bands at the K point of the Brillouin zone and the higher binding-energy hole band at Γ can be varied in excess of 100 meV. We explore the mechanisms underpinning this evolution and discuss the implications for tuning both the size of the band gaps, and the efficiency of the spin-dependent electron-phonon coupling channels in homobilayer transition metal dichalcogenide devices.

Search for proton decay via $p \to e^{+}π^{0}π^{0}$ and $p \to μ^{+}π^{0}π^{0}$ in 0.401 megaton-years exposure of Super-Kamiokande I-V

We searched for proton decay via $p \to e^{+}π^{0}π^{0}$ and $p \to μ^{+}π^{0}π^{0}$ in 0.401 megaton-years of data collected in all pure water detector phases of Super-Kamiokande (SK) I-V. A theoretical study predicts proton decay rates without assuming a particular grand unified theory and suggests that three-body proton decays involving two pions can have decay rates comparable to those of $p \to e^{+}π^{0}$ and $p \to μ^{+}π^{0}$. This is the first search for proton decay into a charged anti-lepton and two neutral pions in SK. One data candidate event was found for each of the two decay modes, which is consistent with the expected atmospheric neutrino background. We set lower limits on the lifetime of $τ/B(p \to e^{+}π^{0}π^{0}) > 7.2 \times 10^{33}$ years and $τ/B(p \to μ^{+}π^{0}π^{0}) > 4.5 \times 10^{33}$ years at 90 $\%$ confidence level. These limits are more than one order of magnitude higher than those of the previous experiment.

Development of Faster and More Accurate Supernova Localization at Super-Kamiokande

The next nearby core-collapse supernova (SN) promises to yield a treasure of scientific information through multi-messenger astronomy. Early observations of the shock breakout (SBO) emissions are especially critical to understand the SN explosive mechanism as well as the properties of the progenitor star. Neutrino observatories are able to provide an early alert of a SN before the arrival of the SBO radiation. Super-Kamiokande (SK) has the unique capability to independently reconstruct an accurate SN pointing direction as part of its real-time monitoring system, ``SNWATCH.'' Recent upgrades to SK by adding gadolinium (Gd) to the detection volume have been accompanied by efforts to improve the speed and accuracy of SN direction reconstruction. A new, novel HEALPix-based approach (``HP-Fitter'') can calculate the SN direction from the reconstructed burst event directions in less than one second. As well, the previous maximum-likelihood direction fitter (``ML-Fitter'') was upgraded by incorporating event information from Gd neutron-capture as well as using the HP-Fitter for the initial fit parameters and from code refactoring and optimization. The improved ML-Fitter has better angular resolution but direction reconstruction time is $\mathcal{O}$(sec). Together with improvements in burst detection and event reconstruction times, SNWATCH is now able to generate an SN alert with pointing information in about 90 seconds. These upgrades have been implemented at SK and integrated into a new automated system to provide GCN notices.

Constraints on sub-GeV dark matter scattering on electrons with COSINE-100

We present results of the search for sub-GeV dark matter interaction with electrons in the NaI(Tl) crystals of the COSINE-100 experiment. The two benchmark scenarios of a heavy and a light vector boson as mediator of the interaction were studied. We found no excess events over the expected background in a data-set of 2.82 years, with a total exposure of 172.9 kg-year. The derived 90% confidence level upper limits exclude a DM-electron scattering cross section above 6.4 $\times$ 10$^{-33}$ cm$^2$ for a DM mass of 0.25 GeV, assuming a light mediator; and above 3.4 $\times$ 10$^{-37}$ cm$^2$ for a 0.4 GeV DM, assuming a heavy mediator, and represent the most stringent constraints for a NaI(Tl) target to date. We also briefly discuss a planned analysis using an annual modulation method below the current 0.7 keV threshold of COSINE-100, down to few photoelectrons yield.

LiFE-SNS: LiF Experiment for keV-scale Sterile Neutrino Search

The LiF Experiment for keV-scale Sterile Neutrino Search (LiFE-SNS) aims to probe sterile neutrinos through precision measurements of the tritium $β$ spectrum. Tritium nuclei are produced and embedded in LiF crystals via the ${}^{6}\mathrm{Li}(n,α){}^{3}\mathrm{H}$ reaction, allowing thermal calorimetric detection of $β$ decays with magnetic microcalorimeters (MMCs) operated at millikelvin temperatures. We present the detector configuration, background studies, and calibration method, including modeling of position-dependent response and characterization of detector nonlinearity. We also discuss potential sources of systematic uncertainty relevant to the sterile-neutrino search. While the first phase of LiFE-SNS has been completed, this paper focuses on calibration and detector characterization. The achieved performance enables precision $β$-spectrum measurements, and projected sensitivities indicate competitive reach in the keV mass region.

Search for nucleon decay via $p\rightarrowνπ^{+}$ and $n\rightarrowνπ^{0}$ in 0.484 Mton-year of Super-Kamiokande data

We present the results of searches for nucleon decays via $p\rightarrowνπ^{+}$ and $n\rightarrowνπ^{0}$ using a 0.484 Mt$\cdot$yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande I-V data covering the entire pure water phase of the experiment. Various improvements on the previous 2014 nucleon decay search, which used an exposure of 0.173 Mt$\cdot$yr, are incorporated. The physics models related to pion production and nuclear interaction are refined with external data, and a more comprehensive set of systematic uncertainties, now including those associated with the atmospheric neutrino flux and pion production channels is considered. Also, the fiducial volume has been expanded by 21\%. No significant indication of a nucleon decay signal is found beyond the expected background. Lower bounds on the nucleon partial lifetimes are determined to be $3.5\times10^{32}$~yr for $p\rightarrowνπ^{+}$ and $1.4\times10^{33}$~yr for $n\rightarrowνπ^{0}$ at 90\% confidence level.

Neutron multiplicity measurement in muon capture on oxygen nuclei in the Gd-loaded Super-Kamiokande detector

In recent neutrino detectors, neutrons produced in neutrino reactions play an important role. Muon capture on oxygen nuclei is one of the processes that produce neutrons in water Cherenkov detectors. We measured neutron multiplicity in the process using cosmic ray muons that stop in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande detector. For this measurement, neutron detection efficiency is obtained with the muon capture events followed by gamma rays to be $50.2^{+2.0}_{-2.1}\%$. By fitting the observed multiplicity considering the detection efficiency, we measure neutron multiplicity in muon capture as $P(0)=24\pm3\%$, $P(1)=70^{+3}_{-2}\%$, $P(2)=6.1\pm0.5\%$, $P(3)=0.38\pm0.09\%$. This is the first measurement of the multiplicity of neutrons associated with muon capture on oxygen without neutron energy threshold.

Measurement of the branching ratio of $\mathrm{^{16}N}$, $\mathrm{^{15}C}$, $\mathrm{^{12}B}$, and $\mathrm{^{13}B}$ isotopes through the nuclear muon capture reaction in the Super-Kamiokande detector

The Super-Kamiokande detector has measured solar neutrinos for more than $25$ years. The sensitivity for solar neutrino measurement is limited by the uncertainties of energy scale and background modeling. Decays of unstable isotopes with relatively long half-lives through nuclear muon capture, such as $\mathrm{^{16}N}$, $\mathrm{^{15}C}$, $\mathrm{^{12}B}$ and $\mathrm{^{13}B}$, are detected as background events for solar neutrino observations. In this study, we developed a method to form a pair of stopping muon and decay candidate events and evaluated the production rates of such unstable isotopes. We then measured their branching ratios considering both their production rates and the estimated number of nuclear muon capture processes as $Br(\mathrm{^{16}N})=(9.0 \pm 0.1)\%$, $Br(\mathrm{^{15}C})=(0.6\pm0.1)\%$, $Br(\mathrm{^{12}B})=(0.98 \pm 0.18)\%$, $Br(\mathrm{^{13}B})=(0.14 \pm 0.12)\%$, respectively. The result for $\mathrm{^{16}N}$ has world-leading precision at present and the results for $\mathrm{^{15}C}$, $\mathrm{^{12}B}$, and $\mathrm{^{13}B}$ are the first branching ratio measurements for those isotopes.

First Associated Neutrino Search for a Failed Supernova Candidate with Super-Kamiokande

In 2024, a failed supernova candidate, M31-2014-DS1, was reported in the Andromeda galaxy (M31), located at a distance of approximately 770 kpc. In this paper, we search for neutrinos from this failed supernova using data from Super-Kamiokande (SK). Based on the estimated time of black hole formation inferred from optical and infrared observations, we define a search window for neutrino events in the SK data. Using this window, we develop a dedicated analysis method for failed supernovae and apply it to M31-2014-DS1, by conducting a cluster search using the timing and energy information of candidate events. No significant neutrino excess is observed within the search region. Consequently, we place an upper limit on the electron antineutrino luminosity from M31-2014-DS1 and discuss its implications for various failed SN models and their neutrino emission characteristics. Despite the 18 MeV threshold adopted to suppress backgrounds, the search remains sufficiently sensitive to constrain the Shen-TM1 EOS, yielding a 90% confidence level upper limit of 1.76 \times 10^{53} erg on the electron antineutrino luminosity, slightly above the expected value of 1.35 \times 10^{53} erg.

Limits on WIMP dark matter with NaI(Tl) crystals in three years of COSINE-100 data

We report limits on WIMP dark matter derived from three years of data collected by the COSINE-100 experiment with NaI(Tl) crystals, achieving an improved energy threshold of 0.7 keV. This lowered threshold enhances sensitivity in the sub-GeV mass range, extending the reach for direct detection of low-mass dark matter. Although no excess of WIMP-like events was observed, the increased sensitivity enabled a model-insensitive comparison between the expected WIMP signal rate-based on mass limits from our data-and DAMA's reported modulation amplitude. Our findings strongly disfavor the DAMA signal as originating from WIMP interactions, fully excluding DAMA/LIBRA 3$σ$ allowed regions and providing enhanced WIMP mass limits by an order of magnitude in the spin-independent model compared to previous results. In the spin-dependent model, cross-section upper limits were obtained in the mass range [0.1-5.0] GeV/c$^2$, with additional sensitivity to sub-GeV WIMPs through the inclusion of the Migdal effect. These results represent substantial progress in low-mass dark matter exploration and reinforce constraints on the longstanding DAMA claim.

Combined Annual Modulation Dark Matter Search with COSINE-100 and ANAIS-112

The annual modulation signal, claimed to be consistent with dark matter as observed by DAMA/LIBRA in a sodium-iodide based detector, has persisted for over two decades. COSINE-100 and ANAIS-112 were designed to test the claim directly using the same target material. COSINE-100, located at Yangyang Underground Laboratory in South Korea, and ANAIS-112, located at Canfranc Underground Laboratory in Spain, have been taking data since 2016 and 2017, respectively. Each experiment published its respective results independently. In this paper, we present the results of an annual modulation search as a test of the signal observed by DAMA/LIBRA with the first three respective years of data from COSINE-100 and ANAIS-112. Using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method, we find best fit values for modulation amplitude of $-0.0002 {\pm} 0.0026$ cpd/kg/keV in the 1-6 keV and $0.0021 {\pm} 0.0028$ cpd/kg/keV in the 2-6 keV energy regions. These results are not compatible with DAMA/LIBRA's assertion for their observation of annual modulation at $3.7σ$ and $2.6σ$, respectively. Performing a simple combination of the newly released 6-years datasets from both experiments find values consistent with no modulation at $0.0005 {\pm} 0.0019$ cpd/kg/keV in the 1-6 keV and $0.0027 {\pm} 0.0021$ cpd/kg/keV in the 2-6 keV energy regions with $4.68σ$ and $3.53σ$ respective exclusions of the DAMA/LIBRA signal.

COSINE-100 Full Dataset Challenges the Annual Modulation Signal of DAMA/LIBRA

For over 25 years, the DAMA/LIBRA collaboration has claimed to observe an annual modulation signal, suggesting the existence of dark matter interactions. However, no experiment employing different target materials has observed a dark matter signal consistent with their result. To address this puzzle, the COSINE-100 collaboration conducted a model-independent test using sodium iodide crystal detectors, the same target material as DAMA/LIBRA. Analyzing data collected over 6.4 years by the effective mass of 61.3 kg, with improved energy calibration and time-dependent background modeling, we found no evidence of an annual modulation signal, challenging the DAMA/LIBRA result with a confidence level greater than 3$σ$. This finding represents a substantial step toward resolving the long-standing debate surrounding DAMA/LIBRA's dark matter claim, indicating that the observed modulation is unlikely to be caused by dark matter interactions.

Radiopurity measurements of liquid scintillator for the COSINE-100 Upgrade

A new 2,400 L liquid scintillator has been produced for the COSINE-100 Upgrade, which is under construction at Yemilab for the next COSINE dark matter experiment phase. The linear-alkyl-benzene-based scintillator is designed to serve as a veto for NaI(Tl) crystal targets and a separate platform for rare event searches. We measured using a sample consisting of a custom-made 445 mL cylindrical Teflon container equipped with two 3-inch photomultiplier tubes. Analyses show activity levels of $0.091 \pm 0.042$ mBq/kg for $^{238}$U and $0.012 \pm 0.007$ mBq/kg for $^{232}$Th.

Measurement of neutron production in atmospheric neutrino interactions at Super-Kamiokande

We present measurements of total neutron production from atmospheric neutrino interactions in water, analyzed as a function of electron-equivalent visible energy over a range of 30 MeV to 10 GeV. These results are based on 4,270 days of data collected by Super-Kamiokande, including 564 days with 0.011 wt\% gadolinium added to enhance neutron detection. Neutron signal selection is based on a neural network trained on simulation, with its performance validated using an Am/Be neutron point source. The measurements are compared to predictions from neutrino event generators combined with various hadron-nucleus interaction models, which include an intranuclear cascade model and a nuclear de-excitation model. We observe significant variations in the predictions depending on the choice of hadron-nucleus interaction model. We discuss key factors that contribute to describing our data, such as in-medium effects in the intranuclear cascade and the accuracy of statistical evaporation modeling.
