Reentrant anisotropic phases in a two-dimensional hole system

Anisotropic charge transport is observed in a two-dimensional (2D) hole system in a perpendicular magnetic field at filling factors nu=7/2 and nu=11/2 for temperatures below 150mK. In stark contrast, the transport at nu=9/2 is isotropic for all temperatures. Our results for a two-dimensional hole system differ substantially from 2D electron transport where no anisotropy has been observed at nu=7/2, the strongest anisotropy occurs at nu=9/2, and reentrant behavior is not evident. We attribute this difference to strong spin-orbit coupling in the hole system.

Topological Quantum Computing with Only One Mobile Quasiparticle

In a topological quantum computer, universal quantum computation is performed by dragging quasiparticle excitations of certain two dimensional systems around each other to form braids of their world lines in 2+1 dimensional space-time. In this paper we show that any such quantum computation that can be done by braiding $n$ identical quasiparticles can also be done by moving a single quasiparticle around n-1 other identical quasiparticles whose positions remain fixed.

Vortex Lattices in Rotating Atomic Bose Gases with Dipolar Interactions

We show that dipolar interactions have dramatic effects on the groundstates of rotating atomic Bose gases in the weak interaction limit. With increasing dipolar interaction (relative to the net contact interaction), the mean-field, or high filling fraction, groundstate undergoes a series of transitions between vortex lattices of different symmetries: triangular, square, ``stripe'', and ``bubble'' phases. We also study the effects of dipolar interactions on the quantum fluids at low filling fractions. We show that the incompressible Laughlin state at filling fraction $ν=1/2$ is replaced by compressible stripe and bubble phases.

Suppression of weak localization effects in low-density metallic 2D holes

We have measured the conductivity in a gated high-mobility GaAs two dimensional hole sample with densities in the range (7-17)x10^9 cm^-2 and at hole temperatures down to 5x10^-3 E_F. We measure the weak localization corrections to the conductivity g=G/(e^2/h) as a function of magnetic field (Delta g=0.019 +/- 0.006 at g=1.5 and T=9 mK) and temperature (d ln g/dT<0.0058 and 0.0084 at g=1.56 and 2.8). These values are less than a few percent of the value 1/pi predicted by standard weak localization theory for a disordered 2D Fermi liquid

Quasiparticle Spectrum of d-wave Superconductors in the Mixed State

The quasiparticle spectrum of a two-dimensional d-wave superconductor in the mixed state, H_{c1} << H << H_{c2}, is studied both analytically and numerically using the linearized Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. We consider various values of the "anisotropy ratio" v_F/v_Delta for the quasiparticle velocities at the Dirac points, and we examine the implications of symmetry. For a Bravais lattice of vortices, we find there is always an isolated energy-zero (Dirac point) at the center of the Brillouin zone, but for a non-Bravais lattice with two vortices per unit cell there is generally an energy gap. In both of these cases, the density of states should vanish at zero energy, in contrast with the semiclassical prediction of a constant density of states, though the latter may hold down to very low energies for large anisotropy ratios. This result is closely related to the particle-hole symmetry of the band structures in lattices with two vortices per unit cell. More complicated non-Bravais vortex lattice configurations with at least four vortices per unit cell can break the particle-hole symmetry of the linearized energy spectrum and lead to a finite density of states at zero energy.

Half-filled Landau level as a Fermi liquid of dipolar quasiparticles

In this paper we study the relation between the conventional Fermion-Chern-Simons (FCS) theory of the half-filled Landau level (nu=1/2), and alternate descriptions that are based on the notion of neutral quasi-particles that carry electric dipole moments. We have previously argued that these two approaches are equivalent, and that e.g., the finite compressibility obtained in the FCS approach is also obtained from the alternate approach, provided that one properly takes into account a peculiar symmetry of the dipolar quasiparticles --- the invariance of their energy to a shift of their center of mass momentum. Here, we demonstrate the equivalence of these two approaches in detail. We first study a model where the charge and flux of each fermion is smeared over a radius Q^{-1} where results can be calculated to leading order in the small parameter Q/k_f. We study two dipolar-quasiparticle descriptions of the nu=1/2 state in the small-Q model and confirm that they yield the same density response function as in the FCS approach. We also study the single-particle Green's function and the effective mass, for one form of dipolar quasiparticles, and find the effective mass to be infra-red divergent, exactly as in the FCS approach. Finally, we propose a form for a Fermi-liquid theory for the dipolar quasiparticles, which should be valid in the physical case where Q is infinite.

Observation of Collective Excitations of the Dilute 2D Electron System

We report inelastic light scattering measurements of dispersive spin and charge density excitations in dilute 2D electron systems reaching densities less than 10^{10} cm^{-2}. In the quantum Hall state at nu=2, roton critical points in the spin inter--Landau level mode show a pronounced softening as r_s is increased. Instead of a soft mode instability predicted by Hartree--Fock calculations for r_s ~ 3.3, we find evidence of multiple rotons in the dispersion of the softening spin excitations. Extrapolation of the data indicates the possibility of an instability for r_s >~ 11.
