Direct Measurement of Backgrounds using Reactor-Off Data in Double Chooz

Double Chooz is unique among modern reactor-based neutrino experiments studying $\bar ν_e$ disappearance in that data can be collected with all reactors off. In this paper, we present data from 7.53 days of reactor-off running. Applying the same selection criteria as used in the Double Chooz reactor-on oscillation analysis, a measured background rate of 1.0$\pm$0.4 events/day is obtained. The background model for accidentals, cosmogenic $β$-$n$-emitting isotopes, fast neutrons from cosmic muons, and stopped-$μ$ decays used in the oscillation analysis is demonstrated to be correct within the uncertainties. Kinematic distributions of the events, which are dominantly cosmic-ray-produced correlated-background events, are provided. The background rates are scaled to the shielding depths of two other reactor-based oscillation experiments, Daya Bay and RENO.

Letter of Intent: A new investigation of numu to nue oscillations with improved sensitivity in an enhanced MiniBooNE experiment

We propose adding 300 mg/l PPO to the existing MiniBooNE detector mineral oil to increase the scintillation response. This will allow the detection of associated neutrons and increase sensitivity to final-state nucleons in neutrino interactions. This increased capability will enable an independent test of whether the current excess seen in the MiniBooNE oscillation search is signal or background. In addition it will enable other neutrino interaction measurements to be made including a search for the strange-quark contribution to the nucleon spin Delta s and a low-energy measurement of charged-current quasielastic scattering.

Combined Analysis of all Three Phases of Solar Neutrino Data from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory

We report results from a combined analysis of solar neutrino data from all phases of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. By exploiting particle identification information obtained from the proportional counters installed during the third phase, this analysis improved background rejection in that phase of the experiment. The combined analysis resulted in a total flux of active neutrino flavors from 8B decays in the Sun of (5.25 \pm 0.16(stat.)+0.11-0.13(syst.))\times10^6 cm^{-2}s^{-1}. A two-flavor neutrino oscillation analysis yielded \Deltam^2_{21} = (5.6^{+1.9}_{-1.4})\times10^{-5} eV^2 and tan^2θ_{12}= 0.427^{+0.033}_{-0.029}. A three-flavor neutrino oscillation analysis combining this result with results of all other solar neutrino experiments and the KamLAND experiment yielded \Deltam^2_{21} = (7.41^{+0.21}_{-0.19})\times10^{-5} eV^2, tan^2θ_{12} = 0.446^{+0.030}_{-0.029}, and sin^2θ_{13} = (2.5^{+1.8}_{-1.5})\times10^{-2}. This implied an upper bound of sin^2θ_{13} < 0.053 at the 95% confidence level (C.L.).

Measurement of the $ν_e$ and Total $^{8}$B Solar Neutrino Fluxes with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Phase-III Data Set

This paper details the solar neutrino analysis of the 385.17-day Phase-III data set acquired by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). An array of $^3$He proportional counters was installed in the heavy-water target to measure precisely the rate of neutrino-deuteron neutral-current interactions. This technique to determine the total active $^8$B solar neutrino flux was largely independent of the methods employed in previous phases. The total flux of active neutrinos was measured to be $5.54^{+0.33}_{-0.31}(stat.)^{+0.36}_{-0.34}(syst.)\times 10^{6}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, consistent with previous measurements and standard solar models. A global analysis of solar and reactor neutrino mixing parameters yielded the best-fit values of $Δm^2 = 7.59^{+0.19}_{-0.21}\times 10^{-5}{eV}^2$ and $θ= 34.4^{+1.3}_{-1.2}$ degrees.

A Monte Carlo simulation of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory proportional counters

The third phase of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) experiment added an array of 3He proportional counters to the detector. The purpose of this Neutral Current Detection (NCD) array was to observe neutrons resulting from neutral-current solar neutrino-deuteron interactions. We have developed a detailed simulation of the current pulses from the NCD array proportional counters, from the primary neutron capture on 3He through the NCD array signal-processing electronics. This NCD array Monte Carlo simulation was used to model the alpha-decay background in SNO's third-phase 8B solar-neutrino measurement.

Galaxy Cluster Astrophysics and Cosmology: Questions and Opportunities for the Coming Decade

We are learning much about how structure forms, in particular how clusters as nodes in the cosmic web evolve and accrete matter, and about the physical processes within these objects. In the next decade, the study of clusters will enable us to tackle important questions regarding the nature of Dark Matter and Dark Energy, how clusters co-evolve with super-massive black holes at their centers, and to advance our knowledge about fundamental plasma astrophysics. This science white paper outlines the key questions and research opportunities in cluster astrophysics that are emerging in the coming decade and beyond, and serves as an overview to other cluster related white papers.

Fossil Systems in the 400d Cluster Catalog

We report the discovery of seven new fossil systems in the 400d cluster survey. Our search targets nearby, $z\le0.2$, and X-ray bright, $L_X\ge 10^{43}$ erg sec$^{-1}$, clusters of galaxies. Where available, we measure the optical luminosities from Sloan Digital Sky Survey images, thereby obtaining uniform sets of both X-ray and optical data. Our selection criteria identify 12 fossil systems, out of which five are known from previous studies. While in general agreement with earlier results, our larger sample size allows us to put tighter constraints on the number density of fossil clusters. It has been previously reported that fossil groups are more X-ray bright than other X-ray groups of galaxies for the same optical luminosity. We find, however, that the X-ray brightness of massive fossil systems is consistent with that of the general population of galaxy clusters and follows the same $L_X-L_{\rm opt}$ scaling relation.

Virial Scaling of Massive Dark Matter Halos: Why Clusters Prefer a High Normalization Cosmology

We present a precise estimate of the bulk virial scaling relation of halos formed via hierarchical clustering in an ensemble of simulated cold dark matter cosmologies. The result is insensitive to cosmological parameters, the presence of a trace, dissipationless gas component, and numerical resolution down to a limit of ~1000 particles. The dark matter velocity dispersion scales with total mass as log(sigma_{DM}(M,z)) = log(1082.9 +- 4.0 \kms) + (0.3361 +- 0.0026) log(h(z)M_{200}/10^{15} Msun), with h(z) the dimensionless Hubble parameter. At fixed mass, the velocity dispersion likelihood is nearly log-normal, with scatter sigma_{ln sigma} = 0.0426 +- 0.015, except for a tail to higher dispersions containing 10% of the population that are merger transients. We combine this relation with the halo mass function in LCDM models, and show that a low normalization condition, S_8 = sigma_8(Omega_m/0.3)^{0.35} \= 0.69, favored by recent WMAP and SDSS analysis requires that galaxy and gas specific energies in rich clusters be 50% larger than that of the underlying dark matter. Such large energetic biases are in conflict with the current generation of direct simulations of cluster formation. A higher normalization, S_8 = 0.80, alleviates this tension and implies that the hot gas fraction within r_{500} is (0.71 +- 0.09) h_{70}^{-3/2} Omega_b/Ω_m, a value consistent with recent Sunyaev-Zel'dovich observations.

Diffusion-Limited Reaction in One Dimension: Paired and Unpaired Nucleation

We consider the dynamics of diffusing particles in one space dimension with annihilation on collision and nucleation (creation of particles) with constant probability per unit time and length. The cases of nucleation of single particles and nucleation in pairs are considered. A new method of analysis permits exact calculation of the steady state density and its time evolution in terms of the three parameters describing the microscopic dynamics: the nucleation rate, the initial separation of nucleated pairs and the diffusivity of a particle. For paired nucleation at sufficiently small initial separation the nucleation rate is proportional to the square of the steady state density. For unpaired nucleation, and for paired nucleation at sufficiently large initial separation, the nucleation rate is proportional to the cube of the steady state density.

Periodic Instantons in SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs Theory

The properties of periodic instanton solutions of the classical SU(2) gauge theory with a Higgs doublet field are described analytically at low energies, and found numerically for all energies up to and beyond the sphaleron energy. Interesting new classes of bifurcating complex periodic instanton solutions to the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations are described.
