Complete Glauber calculations for proton-nucleus inelastic cross sections

We perform a parameter-free calculation for the high-energy proton-nucleus scattering based on the Glauber theory. A complete evaluation of the so-called Glauber amplitude is made by using the factorization of the single-particle wave functions. The multiple-scattering or multistep processes are fully taken into account within the Glauber theory. We demonstrate that proton- $^{12}$C, $^{20}$Ne, and $^{28}$Si elastic and inelastic scattering ($J^π=0^+ \to 2^+$ and $0^+ \to 4^+$) processes are very well described in a wide range of the incident energies from $\sim$50 MeV to $\sim$ 1 GeV. We evaluate the validity of a simple one-step approximation andfind that the approximation works fairly well for the inelastic $0^+ \to 2^+$ processes but not for $0^+ \to 4^+$ where the multistep processes become more important. As an application, we quantify the difference between the total reaction and interaction cross sections of proton-$^{12}$C, $^{20}$Ne, and $^{28}$Si collisions.

Nuclear surface diffuseness revealed in nucleon-nucleus diffraction

Nuclear surface provides useful information on nuclear radius, nuclear structure as well as properties of nuclear matter. We discuss the relationship between the nuclear surface diffuseness and elastic scattering differential cross section at the first diffraction peak of high-energy nucleon-nucleus scattering as an efficient tool in order to extract the nuclear surface information from limited experimental data involving short-lived unstable nuclei. The high-energy reaction is described by a reliable microscopic reaction theory, the Glauber model. Extending the idea of the black sphere model, we find one-to-one correspondence between the nuclear bulk structure information and proton elastic scattering diffraction peak. This implies that we can extract both the nuclear radius and diffuseness simultaneously, using the position of the first diffraction peak and its magnitude of the elastic scattering differential cross section. We confirm the reliability of this approach by using realistic density distributions obtained by a mean-field model.

Low-lying electric-dipole strengths of Ca, Ni, and Sn isotopes imprinted on total reaction cross sections

Low-lying electric-dipole ($E1$) strength of a neutron-rich nucleus contains information on neutron-skin thickness, deformation, and shell evolution. We discuss the possibility of making use of total reaction cross sections on $^{40}$Ca, $^{120}$Sn, and $^{208}$Pb targets to probe the $E1$ strength of neutron-rich Ca, Ni, and Sn isotopes. They exhibit large enhancement of the $E1$ strength at neutron number $N > 28$, $50$, and $82$, respectively, due to a change of the single-particle orbits near the Fermi surface participating in the transitions. The density distributions and the electric-multipole strength functions of those isotopes are calculated by the Hartree-Fock+BCS and the canonical-basis-time-dependent-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov methods, respectively, using three kinds of Skyrme-type effective interaction. The nuclear and Coulomb breakup processes are respectively described with the Glauber model and the equivalent photon method in which the effect of finite-charge distribution is taken into account. The three Skyrme interactions give different results for the total reaction cross sections because of different Coulomb breakup contributions. The contribution of the low-lying $E1$ strength is amplified when the low-incident energy is chosen. With an appropriate choice of the incident energy and target nucleus, the total reaction cross section can be complementary to the Coulomb excitation for analysing the low-lying $E1$ strength of unstable nuclei.

Search for n-nbar oscillation in Super-Kamiokande

A search for neutron-antineutron ($n-\bar{n}$) oscillation was undertaken in Super-Kamiokande using the 1489 live-day or $2.45 \times 10^{34}$ neutron-year exposure data. This process violates both baryon and baryon minus lepton numbers by an absolute value of two units and is predicted by a large class of hypothetical models where the seesaw mechanism is incorporated to explain the observed tiny neutrino masses and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. No evidence for $n-\bar{n}$ oscillation was found, the lower limit of the lifetime for neutrons bound in ${}^{16}$O, in an analysis that included all of the significant sources of experimental uncertainties, was determined to be $1.9 \times 10^{32}$~years at the 90\% confidence level. The corresponding lower limit for the oscillation time of free neutrons was calculated to be $2.7 \times 10^8$~s using a theoretical value of the nuclear suppression factor of $0.517 \times 10^{23}$~s$^{-1}$ and its uncertainty.

Laboratory Studies on the Removal of Radon-Born Lead from KamLAND's Organic Liquid Scintillator

The removal of radioactivity from liquid scintillator has been studied in preparation of a low background phase of KamLAND. This paper describes the methods and techniques developed to measure and efficiently extract radon decay products from liquid scintillator. We report the radio-isotope reduction factors obtained when applying various extraction methods. During this study, distillation was identified as the most efficient method for removing radon daughters from liquid scintillator.

Search for Dark Matter WIMPs using Upward Through-going Muons in Super-Kamiokande

We present the results of indirect searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with 1679.6 live days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector using neutrino-induced upward through-going muons. The search is performed by looking for an excess of high energy muon neutrinos from WIMP annihilations in the Sun, the core of the Earth, and the Galactic Center, as compared to the number expected from the atmospheric neutrino background. No statistically significant excess was seen. We calculate flux limits in various angular cones around each of the above celestial objects. We obtain conservative model-independent upper limits on WIMP-nucleon cross-section as a function of WIMP mass and compare these results with the corresponding results from direct dark matter detection experiments.

High Sensitivity Anti-Neutrino Detection by KamLAND

Electron anti-neutrinos from nuclear power reactors have been observed by KamLAND. Data from 0.16 kton-year exposure (145.1 live days) indicates disappearance of electron anti-neutrinos at 99.95% C.L. in the energy range 2.6 MeV < E < 8.0 MeV. Considering two-flavor neutrino oscillation with CPT invariance, the only remaining solution to the solar neutrino problem is the Large Mixing Angle (LMA) solution. In addition a 0.28kton-year exposure (185.5 live days) was searched for electron anti-neutrinos in the energy range 8.3 MeV < E < 14.8 MeV. No candidate events were found with expected background of 1.1 +- 0.4 events. Assuming that the origin of electron anti-neutrinos in this energy region comes from 8B solar electron neutrinos, we find an upper limit of neutrino to anti-neutrino conversion probability of 0.00028.

Measurement of the flux and zenith-angle distribution of upward through-going muons in Kamiokande II+III

The flux of upward through-going muons of minimum (mean) threshold energy > 1.6 (3.0) GeV is measured, based on a total of 372 events observed by the Kamiokande II+III detector during 2456 detector live days. The observed muon flux was (1.94+-0.10(stat.)+0.07-0.06(sys.))*10^-13 /cm^2/s/sr, which is compared to an expected value of (2.46+-0.54(theo.))*10^-13/cm^2/s/sr. The observation is in agreement with the prediction within the errors. The zenith angle dependence of the observed upward through-going muons supports the previous indication of neutrino oscillations made by Kamiokande using sub- and multi-GeV atmospheric neutrino events.
