Locally Homogeneous Kundt Triples and CSI Metrics

A pseudo-Riemannian manifold is called CSI if all scalar polynomial invariants constructed from the curvature tensor and its covariant derivatives are constant. In the Lorentzian case, the CSI spacetimes have been studied extensively due to their application to gravity theories. It is conjectured that a CSI spacetime is either locally homogeneous or belongs to the subclass of degenerate Kundt metrics. Independent of this conjecture, any CSI spacetime can be related to a particular locally homogeneous degenerate Kundt metric sharing the same scalar polynomial curvature invariants. In this paper we will invariantly classify the entire subclass of locally homogeneous CSI Kundt spacetimes which are of alignment type {\bf D} to all orders and show that any other CSI Kundt metric can be constructed from them.

Locally Boost Isotropic Spacetimes and the Type ${\bf D}^k$ Condition

We consider the class of locally boost isotropic spacetimes in arbitrary dimension. For any spacetime with boost isotropy, the corresponding curvature tensor and all of its covariant derivatives must be simultaneously of alignment type ${\bf D}$ relative to some common null frame. Such spacetimes are known as type ${\bf D}^k$ spacetimes and are contained within the subclass of degenerate Kundt spacetimes. Although, these spacetimes are $\mathcal{I}$-degenerate, it is possible to distinguish any two type ${\bf D}^k$ spacetimes, as the curvature tensor and its covariant derivatives can be characterized by the set of scalar polynomial curvature invariants for any type ${\bf D}^k$ spacetime. In this paper we find all type ${\bf D}^k$ spacetimes by identifying degenerate Kundt metrics that are of type ${\bf D}^k$ and determining the precise conditions on the metric functions.

Algebraic classification of five-dimensional spacetimes using scalar invariants

There are a number of algebraic classifications of spacetimes in higher dimensions utilizing alignment theory, bivectors and discriminants. Previous work gave a set of necessary conditions in terms of discriminants for a spacetime to be of a particular algebraic type. We demonstrate the discriminant approach by applying the techniques to the Sorkin-Gross-Perry soliton, the supersymmetric and doubly-spinning black rings and some other higher dimensional spacetimes. We show that even in the case of some very complicated metrics it is possible to compute the relevant discriminants and extract useful information from them.

4D neutral signature VSI and CSI spaces

In this paper we present a number of four-dimensional neutral signature exact solutions for which all of the polynomial scalar curvature invariants vanish (VSI spaces) or are all constant (CSI spaces), which are of relevence in current theoretical physics.

Curvature operators and scalar curvature invariants

We continue the study of the question of when a pseudo-Riemannain manifold can be locally characterised by its scalar polynomial curvature invariants (constructed from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives). We make further use of alignment theory and the bivector form of the Weyl operator in higher dimensions, and introduce the important notions of diagonalisability and (complex) analytic metric extension. We show that if there exists an analytic metric extension of an arbitrary dimensional space of any signature to a Riemannian space (of Euclidean signature), then that space is characterised by its scalar curvature invariants. In particular, we discuss the Lorentzian case and the neutral signature case in four dimensions in more detail.

Simple Types of Anisotropic Inflation

We display some simple cosmological solutions of gravity theories with quadratic Ricci curvature terms added to the Einstein-Hilbert lagrangian which exhibit anisotropic inflation. The Hubble expansion rates are constant and unequal in three orthogonal directions. We describe the evolution of the simplest of these homogeneous and anisotropic cosmological models from its natural initial state and evaluate the deviations they will create from statistical isotropy in the fluctuations produced during a period of anisotropic inflation. The anisotropic inflation is not a late-time attractor in these models but the rate of approach to a final isotropic de Sitter state is slow and is conducive to the creation of observable anisotropic statistical effects in the microwave background. The statistical anisotropy would not be scale invariant and the level of statistical anisotropy will grow with scale.

Properties of kinematic singularities

The locally rotationally symmetric tilted perfect fluid Bianchi type V cosmological model provides examples of future geodesically complete spacetimes that admit a `kinematic singularity' at which the fluid congruence is inextendible but all frame components of the Weyl and Ricci tensors remain bounded. We show that for any positive integer n there are examples of Bianchi type V spacetimes admitting a kinematic singularity such that the covariant derivatives of the Weyl and Ricci tensors up to the n-th order also stay bounded. We briefly discuss singularities in classical spacetimes.

Kundt Spacetimes

Kundt spacetimes are of great importance in general relativity in 4 dimensions and have a number of topical applications in higher dimensions in the context of string theory. The degenerate Kundt spacetimes have many special and unique mathematical properties, including their invariant curvature structure and their holonomy structure. We provide a rigorous geometrical kinematical definition of the general Kundt spacetime in 4 dimensions; essentially a Kundt spacetime is defined as one admitting a null vector that is geodesic, expansion-free, shear-free and twist-free. A Kundt spacetime is said to be degenerate if the preferred kinematic and curvature null frames are all aligned. The degenerate Kundt spacetimes are the only spacetimes in 4 dimensions that are not $\mathcal{I}$-non-degenerate, so that they are not determined by their scalar polynomial curvature invariants. We first discuss the non-aligned Kundt spacetimes, and then turn our attention to the degenerate Kundt spacetimes. The degenerate Kundt spacetimes are classified algebraically by the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives in the aligned kinematic frame; as an example, we classify Riemann type D degenerate Kundt spacetimes in which $\nabla(Riem),\nabla^{(2)}(Riem)$ are also of type D. We discuss other local characteristics of the degenerate Kundt spacetimes. Finally, we discuss degenerate Kundt spacetimes in higher dimensions.

Supergravity solutions with constant scalar invariants

We study a class of constant scalar invariant (CSI) spacetimes, which belong to the higher-dimensional Kundt class, that are solutions of supergravity. We review the known CSI supergravity solutions in this class and we explicitly present a number of new exact CSI supergravity solutions, some of which are Einstein.

Metrics With Vanishing Quantum Corrections

We investigate solutions of the classical Einstein or supergravity equations that solve any set of quantum corrected Einstein equations in which the Einstein tensor plus a multiple of the metric is equated to a symmetric conserved tensor $T_{μν}$ constructed from sums of terms the involving contractions of the metric and powers of arbitrary covariant derivatives of the curvature tensor. A classical solution, such as an Einstein metric, is called {\it universal} if, when evaluated on that Einstein metric, $T_{μν}$ is a multiple of the metric. A Ricci flat classical solution is called {\it strongly universal} if, when evaluated on that Ricci flat metric, $T_{μν}$ vanishes. It is well known that pp-waves in four spacetime dimensions are strongly universal. We focus attention on a natural generalisation; Einstein metrics with holonomy ${\rm Sim} (n-2)$ in which all scalar invariants are zero or constant. In four dimensions we demonstrate that the generalised Ghanam-Thompson metric is weakly universal and that the Goldberg-Kerr metric is strongly universal; indeed, we show that universality extends to all 4-dimensional ${\rm Sim}(2)$ Einstein metrics. We also discuss generalizations to higher dimensions.

Bianchi models with vorticity: The type III bifurcation

We study the late-time behaviour of tilted perfect fluid Bianchi type III models using a dynamical systems approach. We consider models with dust, and perfect fluids stiffer than dust, and eludicate the late-time behaviour by studying the centre manifold which dominates the behaviour of the model at late times. In the dust case, this centre manifold is 3-dimensional and can be considered as a double bifurcation as the 2 parameters ($h$ and $γ$) of the type VI$_h$ model are varied. We calculate the decay rates and show that for dust or stiffer the models approach a vacuum spacetime, however, it does so rather slowly: $ρ/H^2\sim 1/\ln t$.

Vanishing Scalar Invariant Spacetimes in Supergravity

We show that the higher-dimensional vanishing scalar invariant (VSI) spacetimes with fluxes and dilaton are solutions of type IIB supergravity, and we argue that they are exact solutions in string theory. We also discuss the supersymmetry properties of VSI spacetimes.

Kinematic and Weyl singularities

We study the properties of a future singularity encountered by a perfect fluid observer in tilting spatially homogeneous Bianchi cosmologies. We derive the boost formulae for the Weyl tensor to establish that, for two observers that are asymptotically null with respect to each other, their respective Weyl parameters generally both tend to zero, constant, or infinity together. We examine three classes of typical examples and one exceptional class. Given the behaviour of the Weyl parameter, we can predict that the singularity encountered is a Weyl singularity or a kinematic singularity. The analysis suggests that the kinematic variables are also useful in indicating a singularity in these models.

Higher dimensional VSI spacetimes

We present the explicit metric forms for higher dimensional vanishing scalar invariant (VSI) Lorentzian spacetimes. We note that all of the VSI spacetimes belong to the higher dimensional Kundt class. We determine all of the VSI spacetimes which admit a covariantly constant null vector, and we note that in general in higher dimensions these spacetimes are of Ricci type III and Weyl type III. The Ricci type N subclass is related to the chiral null models and includes the relativistic gyratons and the higher dimensional pp-wave spacetimes. The spacetimes under investigation are of particular interest since they are solutions of supergravity or superstring theory.

Tilt and phantom cosmology

We show that in tilting perfect fluid cosmological models with an ultra-radiative equation of state, generically the tilt becomes extreme at late times and, as the tilt instability sets in, observers moving with the tilting fluid will experience singular behaviour in which infinite expansion is reached within a finite proper time, similar to that of phantom cosmology (but without the need for exotic forms of matter).

Fluid observers and tilting cosmology

We study perfect fluid cosmological models with a constant equation of state parameter $γ$ in which there are two naturally defined time-like congruences, a geometrically defined geodesic congruence and a non-geodesic fluid congruence. We establish an appropriate set of boost formulae relating the physical variables, and consequently the observed quantities, in the two frames. We study expanding spatially homogeneous tilted perfect fluid models, with an emphasis on future evolution with extreme tilt. We show that for ultra-radiative equations of state (i.e., $γ>4/3$), generically the tilt becomes extreme at late times and the fluid observers will reach infinite expansion within a finite proper time and experience a singularity similar to that of the big rip. In addition, we show that for sub-radiative equations of state (i.e., $γ< 4/3$), the tilt can become extreme at late times and give rise to an effective quintessential equation of state. To establish the connection with phantom cosmology and quintessence, we calculate the effective equation of state in the models under consideration and we determine the future asymptotic behaviour of the tilting models in the fluid frame variables using the boost formulae. We also discuss spatially inhomogeneous models and tilting spatially homogeneous models with a cosmological constant.

On the Viability of Bianchi Type VIIh Models with Dark Energy

We generalize the predictions for the CMB anisotropy patterns arising in Bianchi type VIIh universes to include a dark energy component. We consider these models in light of the result of Jaffe et al. (2005a,b) in which a correlation was found on large angular scales between the WMAP data and the anisotropy structure in a low density Bianchi universe. We find that by including a term Omega_L > 0, the same best-fit anisotropy pattern is reproduced by several combinations of cosmological parameters. This sub-set of models can then be further constrained by current observations that limit the values of various cosmological parameters. In particular, we consider the so-called geometric degeneracy in these parameters imposed by the peak structure of the WMAP data itself. Apparently, despite the additional freedom allowed by the dark energy component, the modified Bianchi models are ruled out at high significance.
