Time domain optical manipulation of exciton and nuclear spin in a single self-assembled quantum dot

We have demonstrated experimentally the manipulation of exciton and nuclear spins in a single self-assembled In$_{0.75}$Al$_{0.25}$As/Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As quantum dot. The oscillation of exciton and nuclear spin polarizations were clearly observed. The switching of the emissions in Zeeman split pair indicates that the exciton pair with opposite spins was created coherently via the continuum states and that we can control the electron and nuclear spin polarizations only by changing the delay time of the cross-linearly-polarized pulses. These suggest the high potentiality of electron and nuclear spin manipulation in a single QD via the continuum state.

Magnetic pressure support and accretion disk spectra

Stellar atmosphere models of ionized accretion disks have generally neglected the contribution of magnetic fields to the vertical hydrostatic support, although magnetic fields are widely believed to play a critical role in the transport of angular momentum. Simulations of magnetorotational turbulence in a vertically stratified shearing box geometry show that magnetic pressure support can be dominant in the upper layers of the disk. We present calculations of accretion disk spectra that include this magnetic pressure support, as well as a vertical dissipation profile based on simulation. Magnetic pressure support generically produces a more vertically extended disk atmosphere with a larger density scale height. This acts to harden the spectrum compared to models that neglect magnetic pressure support. We estimate the significance of this effect on disk-integrated spectra by calculating an illustrative disk model for a stellar mass black hole, assuming that similar magnetic pressure support exists at all radii.

The search for optical emission on and before the GRB trigger with the WIDGET telescope

WIDGET is a robotic telescope for monitoring the HETE-2 field-of-view to detect Gamma-ray Burst optical flashes or possible optical precursors. The system has 62degx62deg wide field-of-view which covers about 80% of HETE-2 one with a 2kx2k Apogee U10 CCD camera and a Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 wide-angle lens without a bandpass filter. WIDGET has been in operation since June 2004 at Akeno observing site where is about 200 km apart from Tokyo. Typical limiting magnitude with S/N=3 at the site is V=10mag for 5 seconds exposure and V=11mag for 30 seconds exposure. We had already six coincident observations with HETE-2 position alerts. It was, however, cloudy for all cases due to rainy season in Japan. Expected number of coincident observations under clear sky is about 5 events per year. We will extend the system in early 2005 for Swift era to monitor optical transients in wider field-of-view, multi-color or polarization modes.

Polarization-dependent shift in excitonic Zeeman splitting of self-assembled InAlAs quantum dots

We report the optical spectroscopic results of a single self-assembled InAlAs/Al GaAs quantum dot. The polarization-dependent shift of the Zeeman splitting in a single InAlAs QD has been observed. The induced Overhauser field is estimated to be 0.16 T in this InAlAs QD and the magnitude is shown to be controllable by the degree of circular polarization of excitation light.

Numerical Examination of the Stability of an Exact Two-dimensional Solution for Flux Pile-up Magnetic Reconnection

The Kelvin--Helmholtz (KH) and tearing instabilities are likely to be important for the process of fast magnetic reconnection that is believed to explain the observed explosive energy release in solar flares. Theoretical studies of the instabilities, however, typically invoke simplified initial magnetic and velocity fields that are not solutions of the governing magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations. In the present study, the stability of a reconnecting current sheet is examined using a class of exact global MHD solutions for steady state incompressible magnetic reconnection, discovered by Craig & Henton. Numerical simulation indicates that the outflow solutions where the current sheet is formed by strong shearing flows are subject to the KH instability. The inflow solutions where the current sheet is formed by a fast and weakly sheared inflow are shown to be tearing unstable. Although the observed instability of the solutions can be interpreted qualitatively by applying standard linear results for the KH and tearing instabilities, the magnetic field and plasma flow, specified by the Craig--Henton solution, lead to the stabilization of the current sheet in some cases. The sensitivity of the instability growth rate to the global geometry of magnetic reconnection may help in solving the trigger problem in solar flare research.

General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations of Black Hole Accretion Disks: Results and Observational Implications

A selection of results from the general relativistic MHD accretion simulations described in the previous talk are presented. We find that the magnetic field strength increases sharply with decreasing radius and is also enhanced near rapidly-spinning black holes. The greater magnetic field strength associated with rapid black hole rotation leads to a large outward electromagnetic angular momentum flux that substantially reduces both the mean accretion rate and the net accreted angular momentum per unit rest-mass. This electromagnetic stress strongly violates the traditional guess that the accretion stress vanishes at and inside the marginally stable orbit. Possible observational consequences include a constraint on the maximum spin of black holes, enhancement to the radiative efficiency, and concentration of fluorescent Fe Kalpha to the innermost part of the accretion disk.

Distribution of Faraday Rotation Measure in Jets from Active Galactic Nuclei II. Prediction from our Sweeping Magnetic Twist Model for the Wiggled Parts of AGN Jets and Tails

Distributions of Faraday rotation measure (FRM) and the projected magnetic field derived by a 3-dimensional simulation of MHD jets are investigated based on our "sweeping magnetic twist model". FRM and Stokes parameters were calculated to be compared with radio observations of large scale wiggled AGN jets on kpc scales. We propose that the FRM distribution can be used to discuss the 3-dimensional structure of magnetic field around jets and the validity of existing theoretical models, together with the projected magnetic field derived from Stokes parameters. In the previous paper, we investigated the basic straight part of AGN jets by using the result of a 2-dimensional axisymmetric simulation. The derived FRM distribution has a general tendency to have a gradient across the jet axis, which is due to the toroidal component of the magnetic field generated by the rotation of the accretion disk. In this paper, we consider the wiggled structure of the AGN jets by using the result of a 3-dimensional simulation. Our numerical results show that the distributions of FRM and the projected magnetic field have a clear correlation with the large scale structure of the jet itself, namely, 3-dimensional helix. Distributions, seeing the jet from a certain direction, show a good matching with those in a part of 3C449 jet. This suggests that the jet has a helical structure and that the magnetic field (especially the toroidal component) plays an important role in the dynamics of the wiggle formation because it is due to a current-driven helical kink instability in our model.

Distribution of Faraday Rotation Measure in Jets from Active Galactic Nuclei I. Prediction from our Sweeping Magnetic Twist Model

Using the numerical data of MHD simulation for AGN jets based on our ``sweeping magnetic twist model'', we calculated the Faraday rotation measure (FRM) and the Stokes parameters to compare with observations. We propose that the FRM distribution can be used to discuss the 3-dimensional structure of magnetic field around jets, together with the projected magnetic field derived from the Stokes parameters. In the present paper, we supposed the basic straight part of AGN jet, and used the data of axisymmetric simulation. The FRM distribution we derived has a general tendency to have gradient across the jet axis, which is due to the toroidal component of the helical magnetic field generated by the rotation of the accretion disk. This kind of gradient in the FRM distribution is actually observed in some AGN jets (e.g. Asada et al. 2002), which suggests helical magnetic field around the jets and thus supports our MHD model. Following this success, we are now extending our numerical observation to the wiggled part of the jets using the data of 3-dimensional simulation based on our model in the following paper.

Triaxial deformation in 10Be

The triaxial deformation in $^{10}$Be is investigated using a microscopic $α+α+n+n$ model. The states of two valence neutrons are classified based on the molecular-orbit (MO) model, and the $π$-orbit is introduced about the axis connecting the two $α$-clusters for the description of the rotational bands. There appear two rotational bands comprised mainly of $K^π= 0^+$ and $K^π= 2^+$, respectively, at low excitation energy, where the two valence neutrons occupy $K^π= 3/2^-$ or $K^π= 1/2^-$ orbits. The triaxiality and the $K$-mixing are discussed in connection to the molecular structure, particularly, to the spin-orbit splitting. The extent of the triaxial deformation is evaluated in terms of the electro-magnetic transition matrix elements (Davydov-Filippov model, Q-invariant model), and density distribution in the intrinsic frame. The obtained values turned out to be $γ= 15^o \sim 20^o$.
