Identification of young nearby runaway stars based on Gaia data and the lithium test

Young nearby runaway stars are suitable to search for their place of origin and possibly associated objects, for example neutron stars. Tetzlaff, Neuh\"auser & Hohle (2011) selected young ($\le 50$ Myr) runaway star candidates from Hipparcos, for which they had estimated the ages from the location in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and evolutionary models. Here, we redetermine or constrain their young ages more precisely not only by using the new Gaia DR2 data, but also by measuring lithium, which is a youth indicator. For 308 stars, we took spectra to search for the strong resonance doublet of the lithium-7 isotope at 6708 $\unicode{xC5}$. The spectra were taken with the \'Echelle spectrograph FLECHAS at the University Observatory Jena between February 2015 and June 2018 and with TRES between April 2011 and June 2017 at the Fred L. Whipple Observatory. We found 208 stars with significant occurrence of lithium in their spectra, and five possess a possible age younger or about 50 Myr. Three of these targets are even closer than GJ 182, the nearest known runaway star at about 24 pc. Theses stars are young runaway stars suitable for further investigation of their origin from either a dynamical or supernova ejection.

Gaia 18dvy: a new FUor in the Cygnus OB3 association

We present optical-infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations of Gaia18dvy, located in the Cygnus OB3 association at a distance of 1.88 kpc. The object was noted by the Gaia alerts system when its lightcurve exhibited a $\gtrsim$4 mag rise in 2018-2019. The brightening was also observable at mid-infared wavelengths. The infrared colors of Gaia18dvy became bluer as the outburst progressed. Its optical and near-infrared spectroscopic characteristics in the outburst phase are consistent with those of bona fide FU Orionis-type young eruptive stars. The progenitor of the outburst is probably a low-mass K-type star with an optical extinction of $\sim$3 mag. A radiative transfer modeling of the circumstellar structure, based on the quiescent spectral energy distribution, indicates a disk with a mass of $4{\times}10^{-3}\,M_{\odot}$. Our simple accretion disk modeling implies that the accretion rate had been exponentially increasing for more than 3 years until mid-2019, when it reached a peak value of $6.9 \times 10^{-6}\,M_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$. In many respects, Gaia18dvy is similar to the FU Ori-type object HBC 722

Spectroscopic characterization of nine binary star systems as well as HIP107136 and HIP107533

We present the results of our 2nd radial velocity monitoring campaign, carried out with the \'Echelle spectrograph FLECHAS at the University Observatory Jena in the course of the Gro{\ss}schwabhausen binary survey between December 2016 and June 2018. The aim of this project is to obtain precise radial velocity measurements for spectroscopic binary stars in order to redetermine, verify, improve and constrain their Keplerian orbital solutions. In this paper we describe the observations, data reduction and analysis and present the results of this project. In total, we have taken 721 RV measurements of 11 stars and derived well determined orbital solutions for 9 systems (7 single-, and 2 double-lined spectroscopic binaries) with periods in the range between 2 and 70 days. In addition, we could rule out the orbital solutions for the previously classified spectroscopic binary systems HIP107136 and HIP107533, whose radial velocities are found to be constant on the km/s-level over a span of time of more than 500 days. In the case of HIP2225 a significant change of its systematic velocity is detected between our individual observing epochs, indicating the presence of an additional companion, which is located on a wider orbit in this system.

Magnon dispersion in Ca2RuO4: impact of spin-orbit coupling and oxygen moments

The magnon dispersion of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ has been studied by polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering experiments on crystals containing 0, 1 and 10 % of Ti. The entire dispersion of transverse magnons can be well described by a conventional spin-wave model with interaction and anisotropy parameters that agree with density functional theory calculations. Spin-orbit coupling strongly influences the magnetic excitations, which is most visible in large energies of the magnetic zone-center modes arising from magnetic anisotropy. We find evidence for a low-lying additional mode that exhibits strongest scattering intensity near the antiferromagnetic zone center. This extra signal can be explained by a sizable magnetic moment of 0.11 Bohr magnetons on the apical oxygens parallel to the Ru moment, which is found in the density functional theory calculations. The energy and the signal strength of the additional branch are well described by taking into account this oxygen moment with weak ferromagnetic coupling between Ru and O moments.

Structure and magnetism of Cr2BP3O12: Towards the quantum-classical crossover in a spin-3/2 alternating chain

Magnetic properties of the spin-3/2 Heisenberg system Cr2BP3O12 are investigated by magnetic susceptibility chi(T) measurements, electron spin resonance, neutron diffraction, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, as well as classical and quantum Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The broad maximum of chi(T) at 85K and the antiferromagnetic Weiss temperature of 139 K indicate low-dimensional magnetic behavior. Below TN = 28 K, Cr2BP3O12 is antiferromagnetically ordered with the k = 0 propagation vector and an ordered moment of 2.5 muB/Cr. DFT calculations, including DFT+U and hybrid functionals, yield a microscopic model of spin chains with alternating nearest-neighbor couplings J1 and J1' . The chains are coupled by two inequivalent interchain exchanges of similar strength (~1-2 K), but different sign (antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic). The resulting spin lattice is quasi-one-dimensional and not frustrated. Quantum MC simulations show excellent agreement with the experimental data for the parameters J1 ~= 50 K and J1'/J1 ~= 0.5. Therefore, Cr2BP3O12 is close to the gapless critical point (J1'/J1 = 0.41) of the spin-3/2 bond-alternating Heisenberg chain. The applicability limits of the classical approximation are addressed by quantum and classical MC simulations. Implications for a wide range of low-dimensional S = 3/2 materials are discussed.

Quantum noise in three-dimensional BEC interferometry

We develop a theory of quantum fluctuations and squeezing in a three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate atom interferometer with nonlinear losses. We use stochastic equations in a truncated Wigner representation to treat quantum noise. Our approach includes the multi-mode spatial evolution of spinor components and describes the many-body dynamics of a mesoscopic quantum system.

Crystal water induced switching of magnetically active orbitals in CuCl2

The dehydration of CuCl2*2(H2O) to CuCl2 leads to a dramatic change in magnetic behavior and ground state. Combining density functional electronic structure and model calculations with thermodynamical measurements we reveal the microscopic origin of this unexpected incident -- a crystal water driven switching of the magnetically active orbitals. This switching results in a fundamental change of the coupling regime from a three-dimensional antiferromagnet to a quasi one-dimensional behavior. CuCl2 can be well described as a frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic exchange J1 and J2/J1 ~ -1.5 for which a helical ground state is predicted.

Fracture strength and Young's modulus of ZnO nanowires

The fracture strength of ZnO nanowires vertically grown on sapphire substrates was measured in tensile and bending experiments. Nanowires with diameters between 60 and 310 nm and a typical length of 2 um were manipulated with an atomic force microscopy tip mounted on a nanomanipulator inside a scanning electron microscope. The fracture strain of (7.7 +- 0.8)% measured in the bending test was found close to the theoretical limit of 10% and revealed a strength about twice as high as in the tensile test. From the tensile experiments the Young's modulus could be measured to be within 30% of that of bulk ZnO, contrary to the lower values found in literature.
