Critical misalignments in climate pledges reveal imbalanced sustainable development pathways

We explore the integration of climate action and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in nationally determined contributions (NDCs), revealing persistent synergies and trade-offs across income groups. While high-income countries emphasize systemic challenges like health (SDG3) and inequality (SDG10), low-income nations prioritize the water-energy-food nexus (SDGs 6-7-12) and natural resource management (SDG15) due to vulnerabilities to climate impacts. Harnessing an innovative artificial intelligence routine, we discuss what these diverging development trajectories imply for the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development in terms of global inequality, the climate and sustainable finance flows and multilateral governance.

Assessment of non-intrusive sensing in wall-bounded turbulence through explainable deep learning

In this work we present a framework to explain the prediction of the velocity fluctuation at a certain wall-normal distance from wall measurements with a deep-learning model. For this purpose, we apply the deep-SHAP method to explain the velocity fluctuation prediction in wall-parallel planes in a turbulent open channel at a friction Reynolds number ${\rm{Re}}_\tau=180$. The explainable-deep-learning methodology comprises two stages. The first stage consists of training the estimator. In this case, the velocity fluctuation at a wall-normal distance of 15 wall units is predicted from the wall-shear stress and wall-pressure. In the second stage, the deep-SHAP algorithm is applied to estimate the impact each single grid point has on the output. This analysis calculates an importance field, and then, correlates the high-importance regions calculated through the deep-SHAP algorithm with the wall-pressure and wall-shear stress distributions. The grid points are then clustered to define structures according to their importance. We find that the high-importance clusters exhibit large pressure and shear-stress fluctuations, although generally not corresponding to the highest intensities in the input datasets. Their typical values averaged among these clusters are equal to one to two times their standard deviation and are associated with streak-like regions. These high-importance clusters present a size between 20 and 120 wall units, corresponding to approximately 100 and 600${\rm\mu m}$ for the case of a commercial aircraft.

Thermal convection in a cylindrical annulus heated laterally

In this paper we study thermoconvective instabilities appearing in a fluid within a cylindrical annulus heated laterally. As soon as a horizontal temperature gradient is applied a convective state appears. As the temperature gradient reaches a critical value a stationary or oscillatory bifurcation may take place. The problem is modelled with a novel method which extends the one described in (numerico). The Navier Stokes equations are solved in the primitive variable formulation, with appropriate boundary conditions for pressure. This is a low order formulation which in cylindrical coordinates introduces lower order singularities. The problem is discretized with a Chebyshev collocation method easily implemented and its convergence has been checked. The results obtained are not only in very good agreement with those obtained in experiments, but also provide a deeper insight into important physical parameters developing the instability, which has not been reported before.
