Novel hydrodynamic cumulation mechanism caused by quantum shell effects

The computational and theoretical analysis carried out in this article demonstrates the existence of a nontrivial mechanism for the compression of a submicron-sized gas bubble formed by a gas of classical ions and a gas of degenerate electrons. This mechanism fundamentally differs from conventional compression mechanisms. It is shown that taking into account the quantum effect of a large spatial scale in the distribution of electrons qualitatively changes the character of cumulative processes. Because of a large-scale electric field caused by quantum shell effects, the compression process is characterized by the formation of multiple shock waves. The values of gas temperature and pressure achieved during compression occur higher by two orders of magnitude as compared with the classical adiabatic regime. The analysis is carried out within the framework of the following model: the dynamics of the electron subsystem is described by equations of a quantum electron fluid, while the hydrodynamic approximation is adopted for the ionic subsystem. The large scale effect is taken into account by means of effective external field acting on electrons. The theoretical analysis carried out within this approach clarifies the nature of the cumulative process in the system under consideration; some quantitative characteristics obtained with numerical simulation are presented. The possibility of experimental observation of this cumulative mechanism is analyzed. It is suggested that the manifestation of the effect can be observed during laser compression of a system of submicron targets by measuring the neutron yield.

Dynamics of supernova bounce in laboratory

We draw attention to recent high explosive (HE) experiments which provide compression of macroscopic amount of matter to high, even record, values of pressure in comparison with other HE experiments. The observed bounce after the compression corresponds to processes in core-collapse supernova explosions after neutrino trapping. Conditions provided in the experiments resemble those in core-collapse supernovae, permitting their use for laboratory astrophysics. A unique feature of the experiments is compression at low entropy. The values of specific entropy are close to those obtained in numerical simulations during the process of collapse in supernova explosions, and much lower than those obtained at laser ignition facilities, another type of high-compression experiment. Both in supernovae and HE experiments the bounce occurs at low entropy, so the HE experiments provide a new platform to realize some supernova collapse effects in laboratory, especially to study hydrodynamics of collapsing flows and the bounce. Due to the good resolution of diagnostics in the compression of macroscopic amounts of material with essential effects of nonideal plasma in EOS, and observed development of 3D instabilities, these experiments may serve as a useful benchmark for astrophysical hydrodynamic codes.

Spatial structure of the modified Coulomb potential in a superstrong magnetic field

The modification of the Coulomb potential due to the enhancement of loop corrections in a superstrong magnetic field is studied numerically. We calculate the modified potential with high precision and obtain the pattern of equipotential lines. The results confirm the general features known from previous studies, however we emphasize some differences in potential structure that can be important for problems with spatially distributed charges.

On physical and numerical instabilities arising in simulations of non-stationary radiatively cooling shocks

We describe our modelling of the radiatively cooling shocks and their thin shells with various numerical tools in different physical and calculational setups. We inspect structure of the dense shell, its formation and evolution, pointing out physical and numerical factors that sustain its shape and also may lead to instabilities. We have found that under certain physical conditions, the circular shaped shells show a strong bending instability and successive fragmentation on Cartesian grids soon after their formation, while remain almost unperturbed when simulated on polar meshes. We explain this by physical Rayleigh--Taylor like instabilities triggered by corrugation of the dense shell surfaces by numerical noise. Conditions for these instabilities follow from both the shell structure itself and from episodes of transient acceleration during re-establishing of dynamical pressure balance after sudden radiative cooling onset. They are also easily excited by physical perturbations of the ambient medium. The widely mentioned Non-linear Thin Shell Instability, in contrast, in tests with physical perturbations is shown to have only limited chances to develop in real radiative shocks, as it seems to require a special spatial arrangement of fluctuations to be excited efficiently. The described phenomena also set new requirements on further simulations of the radiatively cooling shocks in order to be physically correct and free of numerical artefacts.

Cosmological dinosaurs

The hypothesis of existence of primordial black holes with large masses (\geq 10^6 M\odot), formed at the earliest stages of the Universe evolution, is considered in the paper. The possibility does not contradict some theories, see e.g. Barkana & Loeb (2001), and may match new observational data. In particular, this scenario of evolution could describe some peculiarities in distant galaxies and quasars. Calculations of evolution of central body mass in protogalaxies for different initial conditions are presented. It is shown that the sufficient rate of BH mass growth is not achieved in the standard scheme without complex additional assumptions. Moreover, the appearance of a primordial black hole in the epoch of primordial nucleosynthesis could significantly change the chemical composition around it. This can lead to different exotic stars with low mass and nonstandart metals enrichment. The proposed scheme is not considered as universal. On the other hand, if only tiny part of existed objects have the considered nature, it gives a unique possibility to study extremal stages of matter and fields evolution in our Universe.

Flame fronts in Supernovae Ia and their pulsational stability

The structure of the deflagration burning front in type Ia supernovae is considered. The parameters of the flame are obtained: its normal velocity and thickness. The results are in good agreement with the previous works of different authors. The problem of pulsation instability of the flame, subject to plane perturbations, is studied. First, with the artificial system with switched-off hydrodynamics the possibility of secondary reactions to stabilize the front is shown. Second, with account of hydrodynamics, realistic EOS and thermal conduction we can obtain pulsations when Zeldovich number was artificially increased. The critical Zeldovich numbers are presented. These results show the stability of the flame in type Ia supernovae against pulsations because its effective Zeldovich number is small.

Simple Model of Propagating Flame Pulsations

A simple model which exhibits dynamical flame properties in 1D is presented. It is investigated analytically and numerically. The results are applicable to problems of flame propagation in supernovae Ia.

Coulomb corrections and thermo-conductivity of a dense plasma

We point out that confusion sometimes arises when using a chemical potential in plasma with Coulomb interactions. The results of our consideration are applied to the discussion of nuclear reactions screening. Finally, we present a transparent derivation of the thermal conductivity coefficient of a degenerate electron gas.
