Molecular spin-orbit excitations in the J_eff = 1/2 frustrated spinel GeCo$_2$O$_4$

We describe powder and single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering experiments on a spinel-type antiferromagnet GeCo$_2$O$_4$, represented by an effective total angular momentum J_eff = 1/2. Several types of non-dispersive short-range magnetic excitations were discovered. The scattering intensity maps in $\vec{Q}$ space are well reproduced by dynamical structure factor analyses using molecular model Hamiltonians. The results of analyses strongly suggest that the molecular excitations below T_N arise from a hidden molecular-singlet ground state, in which ferromagnetic subunits are antiferromagnetically coupled. The quasielastic excitations above T_N are interpreted as its precursor. A combination of frustration and J_eff = 1/2 might induce these quantum phenomena.

Electron correlation in FeSe superconductor studied by bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy

We have investigated the electronic structures of recently discovered superconductor FeSe by soft-x-ray and hard-x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with high bulk sensitivity. The large Fe 3d spectral weight is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level (EF), which is demonstrated to be a coherent quasi-particle peak. Compared with the results of the band structure calculation with local-density approximation, Fe 3d band narrowing and the energy shift of the band toward EF are found, suggesting an importance of the electron correlation effect in FeSe. The self energy correction provides the larger mass enhancement value (Z^-1=3.6) than in Fe-As superconductors and enables us to separate a incoherent part from the spectrum. These features are quite consistent with the results of recent dynamical mean-field calculations, in which the incoherent part is attributed to the lower Hubbard band.

Itinerancy and Electron Correlation in FeSe 1-x Superconductor Studied by Bulk-Sensitive Photoemission Spectroscopy

We have investigated the electronic structures of newly discovered superconductor FeSe1-x by bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The large Fe 3d spectral weight is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level (EF) and it decreases steeply toward EF . Compared with results of band structure calculations, narrowing the Fe 3d band width and the energy shift of the band toward EF are found, suggesting a mass enhancement due to the weak electron correlation effect. Meanwhile, Fe 2p core-level PES reveals a strong itinerant character of Fe 3d electrons. These features are very similar to those in other Fe-based high-Tc superconductors.

Local Tunneling Spectroscopy across a Metamagnetic Critical Point in the Bi-layer Ruthenate Sr3Ru2O7

The local spectroscopic signatures of metamagnetic criticality in Sr3Ru2O7 were explored using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Singular features in the tunneling spectrum were found close to the Fermi level, as would be expected in a Stoner picture of itinerant electron metamagnetism. These features showed a pronounced magnetic field dependence across the metamagnetic critical point, which cannot be understood in terms of a naive Stoner theory. In addition, a pseudo-gap structure was observed over several tens of meV, accompanied by a c(2x2) superstructure in STM images. This result represents a new electronic ordering at the surface in the absence of any measurable surface reconstruction.

Spin-charge-lattice coupling near the metal-insulator transition in Ca3Ru2O7

We report x-ray scattering studies of the c-axis lattice parameter in Ca3Ru2O7 as a function of temperature and magnetic field. These structural studies complement published transport and magnetization data, and therefore elucidate the spin-charge-lattice coupling near the metal-insulator transition. Strong anisotropy of the structural change for field applied along orthogonal in-plane directions is observed. Competition between a spin-polarized phase that does not couple to the lattice, and an antiferromagnetic metallic phase, which does, gives rise to rich behavior for B $\parallel$ b.

Electronic structures of layered perovskite Sr2MO4 (M=Ru, Rh, and Ir)

We investigated the electronic structures of the two-dimensional layered perovskite Sr$_{2}$\textit{M}O$_{4}$ (\textit{M}=4\textit{d} Ru, 4\textit{d} Rh, and 5\textit{d} Ir) using optical spectroscopy and polarization-dependent O 1\textit{s} x-ray absorption spectroscopy. While the ground states of the series of compounds are rather different, their optical conductivity spectra $σ(ω)$ exhibit similar interband transitions, indicative of the common electronic structures of the 4\textit{d} and 5\textit{d} layered oxides. The energy splittings between the two $e_{g}$ orbitals, $i.e.$, $d_{3z^{2}-r^{2}}$ and $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$, are about 2 eV, which is much larger than those in the pseudocubic and 3\textit{d} layered perovskite oxides. The electronic properties of the Sr$_{2}$\textit{M}O$_{4}$ compounds are discussed in terms of the crystal structure and the extended character of the 4\textit{d} and 5\textit{d} orbitals.

Orbital selectivity of the kink in the dispersion of Sr2RuO4

We present detailed energy dispersions near the Fermi level on the monolayer perovskite ruthenate Sr2RuO4, determined by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. An orbital selectivity of the kink in the dispersion of Sr2RuO4 has been found: A kink for the Ru 4d_xy orbital is clearly observed, but not for the Ru 4d_yz and 4d_zx ones. The result provides insight into the origin of the kink.
