Critical properties of 1D spin-gapped fermions at the onset of magnetization

We develop an effective field theory for finding critical properties of 1D spin gapped fermions at the onset of magnetization. It is shown how the spin-charge interaction leads to a linear critical behavior and finite susceptibility for a wide range of models. We also discuss possible manifestations of spin-charge coupling in cold atomic gases.

Theory of subgap interchain tunneling in quasi one-dimensional conductors

We suggest a theory of internal coherent tunneling in the pseudogap region, when the applied voltage U is below the free electron gap 2Delta_0. We address quasi 1D systems, where the gap is originated by spontaneous lattice distortions of the Incommensurate Charge Density Wave (ICDW) type. Results can be adjusted also to quasi-1D superconductors. The instanton approach allows to calculate the interchain tunneling current both in single electron (amplitude solitons, i.e. spinons) and bi-electron (phase slips) channels. Transition rates are governed by a dissipative dynamics originated by emission of gapless phase excitations in the course of the instanton process. We find that the single-electron tunneling is allowed below the nominal gap 2Delta_0 down to the true pair-breaking threshold at 2W_as<2Delta, where W_as=2Delta/pi is the amplitude soliton energy. Most importantly, the bi-electronic tunneling stretches down to U=0 (in the 1D regime). In both cases, the threshold behavior is given by power laws J (U-U_c)^beta, where the exponent beta v_F/u is large as the ratio of the Fermi velocity v_F and the phase one u. In the 2D or 3D ordered phases, at temperature T<T_c, the one-electron tunneling current does not vanish at the threshold U_c anymore, but saturates above it at U-U_c T_c<<Delta. Also the bi-particle channel acquires a finite threshold U_c=W_ph T_c<<Delta at the energy W_ph of the 2πphase soliton.

Subgap tunneling through channels of polarons and bipolarons in chain conductors

We suggest a theory of internal coherent tunneling in the pseudogap region where the applied voltage is below the free electron gap. We consider quasi 1D systems where the gap is originated by a lattice dimerization like in polyacethylene, as well as low symmetry 1D semiconductors. Results may be applied to several types of conjugated polymers, to semiconducting nanotubes and to quantum wires of semiconductors. The approach may be generalized to tunneling in strongly correlated systems showing the pseudogap effect, like the family of High Tc materials in the undoped limit. We demonstrate the evolution of tunneling current-voltage characteristics from smearing the free electron gap down to threshold for tunneling of polarons and further down to the region of bi-electronic tunneling via bipolarons or kink pairs.

Stripe phase: analytical results for weakly coupled repulsive Hubbard model

Motivated by the stripe developments in cuprates, we review some analytical results of our studies of the charge- and spin density modulations (CDW and SDW) in a weakly coupled one dimensional repulsive electron system on a lattice. It is shown that close to half filling, in the high temperature regime above the mean field transition temperature, short range repulsions favor charge density fluctuations with wave vectors bearing special relations with those of the spin density fluctuations. In the low temperature regime, not only the wave vectors, but also the mutual phases of the CDW and SDW become coupled due to a quantum interference phenomenon, leading to the stripe phase instability in a quasi one-dimensional repulsive electron system. It is shown that away from half filling periodic lattice potential causes cooperative condensation of the spin and charge superlattices. "Switching off" this potential causes vanishing of the stripe order. The leading spin-charge coupling term in the effective Landau functional is derived microscopically. Results of the 1D renormalization group (parquet) analysis away from half filling are also presented, which indicate transient-scale correlations resembling the mean-field pattern. Farther, the self-consistent solution for the spin-charge solitonic superstructure in a quasi-one-dimensional electron system is obtained in the framework of the Hubbard model as a function of hole doping and temperature. Possible relationship with the stripe phase correlations observed in high T_c cuprates is discussed.

Stripes and superconductivity in one-dimensional self-consistent model

We show that many observable properties of high temperature superconductors can be obtained in the frameworks of one-dimensional self-consistent model with included superconducting correlations. Analytical solutions for spin, charge and superconductivity order parameters are found. The ground state of the model at low hole doping is a spin-charge solitonic superstructure. Increasing of doping leads to the phase transition to superconducting phase. There is a region of doping where superconductivity, spin density wave and charged stripe structure coexist. The charge density modulation presents in the vicinity of vortices (kinks in the 1D model) in the superconducting state.

Theory of pseudogaps in charge density waves in application to photo electron or tunneling spectroscopy

For a one-dimensional electron-phonon system we consider the photon absorption involving electronic excitations within the pseudogap energy range. In the framework of the adiabatic approximation for the electron - phonon interactions these processes are described by nonlinear configurations of an instanton type. We calculate the subgap absorption as it can be observed by means of photo electron or tunneling spectroscopies. In details we consider systems with gapless modes: 1D semiconductors with acoustic phonons and incommensurate charge density waves. We find that below the free particle edge the pseudogap starts with the exponential decrease of transition rates changing to a power law deeply within the pseudogap, near the absolute edge.

Pseudogaps due to sound modes: from incommensurate charge density waves to semiconducting wires

We consider pseudogap effects for electrons interacting with gapless modes. We study both generic 1D semiconductors with acoustic phonons and incommensurate charge density waves. We calculate the subgap absorption as it can be observed by means of the photo electron or tunneling spectroscopy. Within the formalism of functional integration and the adiabatic approximation, the probabilities are described by nonlinear configurations of an instanton type. Particularities of both cases are determined by the topological nature of stationary excited states (acoustic polarons or amplitude solitons) and by presence of gapless phonons which change the usual dynamics to the regime of the quantum dissipation. Below the free particle edge the pseudogap starts with the exponential (stretched exponential for gapful phonons) decrease of transition rates. Deeply within the pseudogap they are dominated by a power law, in contrast with nearly exponential law for gapful modes.

A theory of the subgap photoemission in one - dimensional electron - phonon systems. An instanton approach to pseudogaps

For a one-dimensional electron-phonon system we consider the photon absorption involving electronic excitations within the pseudogap energy range. Within the adiabatic approximation for the electron - phonon interactions these processes are described by nonlinear configurations of an instanton type. We calculate intensities of the photoelectron spectroscopy PES including the momentum resolved one ARPES and supplement to known results for the optical subgap absorption. We start with the generic case of a one dimensional semiconductor with pronounced polaronic effect. In details we consider the Peierls model for a half-filled band of electrons coupled to the lattice which describes the polyacethylene and some commensurate Charge Density Waves. Particular attention was required for studies of momentum dependencies for the ARPES where we face an intriguing interference between the time evolution and the translational motion of the instantons.

Analytical stripe phase solution for the Hubbard model

The self-consistent solution for the spin-charge solitonic superstructure in quasi-one-dimensional electron system is obtained in the framework of the Hubbard model as a function of a hole doping. Effects of interchain interactions on the ground state are discussed. Results are used for the interpretation of the observed stripe phases in doped antiferromagnets.

Dynamical Properties of Quantum Hall Edge States

We consider the dynamical properties of simple edge states in integer ($ν= 1$) and fractional ($ ν= 1/2m+1$) quantum Hall (QH) liquids. The influence of a time-dependent local perturbation on the ground state is investigated. It is shown that the orthogonality catastrophe occurs for the initial and final state overlap $| | \sim L^{-{1\over{2ν}}({δ\overπ})^2}$ with the phase shift $δ$. The transition probability for the x-ray problem is also found with the index, dependent on $ν$. Optical experiments that measure the x-ray response of the QH edge are discussed. We also consider electrons tunneling from one dimensional Fermi liquid into a QH fluid. It is argued that for any filling fraction the tunneling from a Fermi liquid to the QH edge is suppressed at low temperatures and we find the nonlinear $I-V$ characteristics $I\sim V^{1/ν}$.

Superconductivity Fluctuations in a One-dimensional Two Band Electron-Phonon Model with Strong Repulsive Interactions

We study a one-dimensional, two band model with short range electron-electron repulsions (onsite $U$ and nearest-neighbour $V$ terms) and electron-phonon coupling. We show that there is a region of $U$,$V$ and band filling in which singlet superconductivity fluctuations are dominant. This region is absent without electron-phonon interactions and includes large values of $U$,$V$.

Exact solution of new integrable nineteen-vertex models and quantum spin-1 chains

New exactly solvable nineteen vertex models and related quantum spin-1 chains are solved. Partition functions, excitation energies, correlation lengths, and critical exponents are calculated. It is argued that one of the non-critical Hamiltonians is a realization of an integrable Haldane system. The finite-size spectra of the critical Hamiltonians deviate in their structure from standard predictions by conformal invariance.
