Case Study of Decoherence Times of Transmon Qubit

In the past two decades, one of the fascinating subjects in quantum physics has been quantum bits (qubits). Thanks to the superposition principle, the qubits can perform many calculations simultaneously, which will significantly increase the speed and capacity of the calculations. The time when a qubit lives in an excited state is called decoherence time. The decoherence time varies considerably depending on the qubit type and materials. Today, short decoherence times are one of the bottlenecks in implementing quantum computers based on superconducting qubits. In this research, the topology of the transmon qubit is investigated, and the decoherence time caused by noise, flux, and critical current noise is calculated by numerical method.

Bistability in a Mesoscopic Josephson Junction Array Resonator

We present an experimental investigation of stochastic switching of a bistable Josephson junctions array resonator with a resonance frequency in the GHz range. As the device is in the regime where the anharmonicity is on the order of the linewidth, the bistability appears for a pump strength of only a few photons. We measure the dynamics of the bistability by continuously observing the jumps between the two metastable states, which occur with a rate ranging from a few Hz down to a few mHz. The switching rate strongly depends on the pump strength, readout strength and the temperature, following Kramer's law. The interplay between nonlinearity and coupling, in this little explored regime, could provide a new resource for nondemolition measurements, single photon switches or even elements for autonomous quantum error correction.

Evidence for a Fermi liquid in the pseudogap phase of high-Tc cuprates

Cuprate high-T_c superconductors on the Mott-insulating side of "optimal doping" (with respect to the highest T_c's) exhibit enigmatic behavior in the non-superconducting state. Near optimal doping the transport and spectroscopic properties are unlike those of a Landau-Fermi liquid. For carrier concentrations below optimal doping a pseudogap removes quasi-particle spectral weight from parts of the Fermi surface, and causes a break-up of the Fermi surface into disconnected nodal and anti-nodal sectors. Here we show that the near-nodal excitations of underdoped cuprates obey Fermi liquid behavior. Our optical measurements reveal that the dynamical relaxation rate 1/tau(omega,T) collapses on a universal function proportional to (hbar omega)^2+(1.5 pi k_B T)^2. Hints at possible Fermi liquid behavior came from the recent discovery of quantum oscillations at low temperature and high magnetic field in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+d and YBa2Cu4O8, from the observed T^2-dependence of the DC (ω=0) resistivity for both overdoped and underdoped cuprates, and from the two-fluid analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance data. However, the direct spectroscopic determination of the energy dependence of the life-time of the excitations -provided by our measurements- has been elusive up to now. This observation defies the standard lore of non-Fermi liquid physics in high T_c cuprates on the underdoped side of the phase diagram.

Strong coupling to magnetic fluctuations in the charge dynamics of Fe-based superconductors

We present a comprehensive comparison of the infrared charge response of two systems, characteristic of classes of the 122 pnictide (SrFe2As2) and 11 chalcogenide (Fe_1.087Te) Fe compounds with magnetically-ordered ground states. In the 122 system, the magnetic phase shows a decreased plasma frequency and scattering, and associated appearance of strong mid-infrared features. The 11 system, with a different magnetic ordering pattern, also shows decreased scattering, but an increase in the plasma frequency, while no clear mid-infrared features appear below the ordering temperature. We suggest how this marked contrast can be understood in terms of the diverse magnetic ordering patterns of the ground state, and conclude that while the high temperature phases of these systems are similar, the magnetic ordering strongly affects the charge dynamical response. In addition, we propose an optical absorption mechanism which appears to be consistent with information gained from several different experiments.

Far-infrared probe of superconductivity in SmO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs}

We report far-infrared reflectance measurements on polycrystalline superconducting samples of SmO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs ($x$ = 0.12, 0.15 and 0.2). We clearly observe superconductivity induced changes of reflectivity in a broad range of energies, which resembles earlier optical measurements on high $T_{c}$ cuprates. The superconducting-to-normal reflectivity ratio $R_{s}/R_{n}$ grows for the photon energies below 18 meV and shows a complicated structure due to the presence of a strong infrared-active phonon at about 10 meV.
