Josephson vortex motion as a source for dissipation of superflow of e-h pairs in bilayers

IIt is shown that in a bilayer excitonic superconductor dissipative losses emerge under transmission of the current from the source to the load. These losses are proportional to the square of the interlayer tunneling amplitude and independent on the value of the input current. The case of quantum Hall bilayer is considered. The bilayer may work as a transmission line if the input current exceeds certain critical value. The input current higher than critical one induces Josephson vortices in the bilayer. The difference of electrochemical potentials is required to feed the load and it forces Josephson vortices to move. The state becomes non-stationary that leads to dissipation.

Bose-Einstein condensation in a decorated lattice: an application to supersolid

The Bose-Einstein condensation of vacancies in a three-dimensional decorated lattice is considered. The model describes possible scenario of superfluidity of solid helium, caused by the presence of zero-point vacancies in a dislocation network. It is shown that the temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation decreases under increase of the length of the segments of the network, and the law of decrease depends essentially on the properties of the vertexes of the network. If the vertexes correspond to barriers with a small transparency, the critical temperature is inversely as the square of the length of the segment. On the contrary, if the vertexes correspond to traps for the vacancies (it is energetically preferable for the vacancies to localize at the vertexes), an exponential lowering of the temperature of transition takes place. The highest temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation is reached in the intermediate case of vertexes with large transparency, but in the absence of tendency of localization in them. In the latter case the critical temperature is inversely as the length of the segment.

Dynamic equation for quantum Hall bilayers with spontaneous interlayer coherence: The low-density limit

The bilayer systems exhibit the Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons that emerge due to Coulomb pairing of electrons belonging to one layer with the holes belonging to the other layer. Here we present the microscopic derivation of the dynamic equation for the condensate wave function at a low density of electron-hole ($e-h$) pairs in a strong magnetic field perpendicular to the layers and an electric field directed along the layers. From this equation we obtain the dispersion law for collective excitations of the condensate and calculate the electric charge of the vortex in the exciton condensate. The critical interlayer spacing, the excess of which leads to a collapse of the superfluid state, is estimated. In bilayer systems with curved conducting layers, the effective mass of the $e-h$ pair becomes the function of the $e-h$ pair coordinates, the regions arise, where the energy of the $e-h$ pair is lowered (exciton traps), and lastly $e-h$ pairs can gain the polarization in the basal plane. This polarization leads to the appearance of quantized vortices even at zero temperature.

Non-dissipative drag of superflow in a two-component Bose gas

A microscopic theory of a non-dissipative drag in a two-component superfluid Bose gas is developed. The expression for the drag current in the system with the components of different atomic masses, densities and scattering lengths is derived. It is shown that the drag current is proportional to the square root of the gas parameter. The temperature dependence of the drag current is studied and it is shown that at temperature of order or smaller than the interaction energy the temperature reduction of the drag current is rather small. A possible way of measuring the drag factor is proposed. A toroidal system with the drag component confined in two half-ring wells separated by two Josephson barriers is considered. Under certain condition such a system can be treated as a Bose-Einstein counterpart of the Josephson charge qubit in an external magnetic field. It is shown that the measurement of the difference of number of atoms in two wells under a controlled evolution of the state of the qubit allows to determine the drag factor.

Order parameter phase locking as a cause of a zero bias peak in the differential tunneling conductance of bilayers with electron-hole pairing

In n-p bilayer systems an exotic phase-coherent state emerges due to Coulomb pairing of n-layer electrons with p-layer holes. Unlike Josephson junctions, the order parameter phase may be locked by matrix elements of interlayer tunneling in n-p bilayers. Here we show how the phase locking phenomenon specifies the response of the electron-hole condensate to interlayer voltages. In the absence of an applied magnetic field, the phase is steady-state (locked) at low interlayer voltages, V V_c. The change in the system dynamics at V=V_c gives rise to a peak in the differential tunneling conductance. The peak width V_c is proportional to the absolute value of the tunneling matrix element |T_{12}|, but its height does not depend on |T_{12}|; thus the peak is sharp for small |T_{12}|. A sufficiently strong in-plane magnetic field reduces considerably the peak height. The present results are in qualitative agreement with the zero bias peak behavior that has recently been observed in bilayer quantum Hall ferromagnets with spontaneous interlayer phase coherence.

Drag of superfluid current in bilayer Bose systems

An effect of nondissipative drag of a superfluid flow in a system of two Bose gases confined in two parallel quasi two-dimensional traps is studied. Using an approach based on introduction of density and phase operators we compute the drag current at zero and finite temperatures for arbitrary ratio of densities of the particles in the adjacent layers. We demonstrate that in a system of two ring-shape traps the "drag force" influences on the drag trap in the same way as an external magnetic flux influences on a superconducting ring. It allows to use the drag effect to control persistent current states in superfluids and opens a possibility for implementing a Bose analog of the superconducting Josephson flux qubit.

Charge ordering and interlayer phase coherence in quantum Hall superlattices

The possibility of the existence of states with a spontaneous interlayer phase coherence in multilayer electron systems in a high perpendicular to the layers magnetic field is investigated. It is shown that phase coherence can be established in such systems only within individual pairs of adjacent layers, while such coherence does not exist between layers of different pairs. The conditions for stability of the state with interlayer phase coherence against transition to a charge-ordered state are determined. It is shown that in the system with the number of layers N\leq 10 these conditions are satisfied at any value of the interlayer distance d. For N>10 there are two intervals of stability: at sufficiently large and at sufficiently small d. For N\to \infty the stability interval in the region of small d vanishes

Metastable bound state of a pair of two-dimensional spatially separated electrons in anti-parallel magnetic fields

We propose a new mechanism for binding of two equally charged carriers in a double-layer system subjected by a magnetic field of a special form. A field configuration for which the magnetic fields in adjacent layers are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction is considered. In such a field an additional integral of motion - the momentum of the pair P arises. For the case when in one layer the carrier is in the zero (n=0) Landau level while in the other layer - in the first (n=1) Landau level the dependence of the energy of the pair on its momentum E(P} is found. This dependence turns out to be nonmonotonic one : a local maximum and a local minimum appears, indicating the emergence of a metastable bound state of two carrier with the same sign of electrical charge.

Charged vortices in superfluid systems with pairing of spatially separated carriers

It is shown that in a magnetic field the vortices in superfluid electron-hole systems carry a real electrical charge. The charge value depends on the relation between the magnetic length and the Bohr radiuses of electrons and holes. In double layer systems at equal electron and hole filling factors in the case of the electron and hole Bohr radiuses much larger than the magnetic length the vortex charge is equal to the universal value (electron charge times the filling factor).

Coupling of spatially separated carriers in crossed electric and magnetic fields and a possibility of a metastable superconducting state in bilayer systems

It is shown that in bilayer conducting structures in crossed electric and magnetic fields of a special configuration (the fields should have opposite signs in the adjacent layers) the dependence of the energy of a pair of equally charged carriers on the momentum of the pair has a local minimum. This minimum corresponds to a bound state of the pair. The local minimum is separated from the absolute minimum by a large energy barrier. That provides the stability of the bound state with respect to different scattering processes. If the number of the pairs is macroscopic, a phase transition into a metastable superconducting state may take place.

Collective excitations of a two-dimensional interacting Bose gas in anti-trap and linear external potentials

We present a method of finding approximate analytical solutions for the spectra and eigenvectors of collective modes in a two-dimensional system of interacting bosons subjected to a linear external potential or the potential of a special form $u(x,y)=μ-u \cosh^2 x/l$, where $μ$ is the chemical potential. The eigenvalue problem is solved analytically for an artificial model allowing the unbounded density of the particles. The spectra of collective modes are calculated numerically for the stripe, the rare density valley and the edge geometry and compared with the analytical results. It is shown that the energies of the modes localized at the rare density region and at the edge are well approximated by the analytical expressions. We discuss Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in the systems under investigations at $T\ne 0$ and find that in case of a finite number of the particles the regime of BEC can be realized, whereas the condensate disappears in the thermodynamic limit.
