Light-Front Hadron Dynamics and AdS/CFT Correspondence

A remarkable consequence of the AdS/CFT correspondence is the nonperturbative derivation of dimensional counting rules for hard scattering processes. Using string/gauge duality we derive the QCD power behavior of light-front Fock-state hadronic wavefunctions for hard scattering in the large-$r$ region of the AdS space from the conformal isometries which determine the scaling of string states as we approach the boundary from the interior of AdS space. The nonperturbative scaling results are obtained for spin-zero and spin-$\half$ hadrons and are extended to include the orbital angular momentum dependence of the constituents in the light-front Fock-expansion. The correspondence with string states is considered for hadronic states of arbitrary orbital angular momentum for a given hadron of spin $\leq 2$. We examine the implications of the color configuration of hadronic Fock-states for the QCD structure of scattering amplitudes at large $N_C$. Quark interchange amplitudes emerge as the dominant large $N_C$ scattering mechanisms for conformal QCD.

QCD Physics Opportunities in Low-Energy Electron-Positron Annihilation

I survey a number of interesting tests of quantum chromodynamics at the amplitude level which can be carried out in electron-positron annihilation and in photon-photon collisions at low energy, including measurements of fundamental processes such as timelike form factors and transition amplitudes, timelike Compton scattering, timelike photon to meson transition amplitudes, and two-photon exclusive processes. Many of these reactions test basic principles of QCD such as hadronization at the amplitude level, factorization, and hadron helicity conservation, tools also used in the analysis of exclusive $B$ and $D$ decays. Measurements of the final-state polarization in hadron pair production determine the relative phase of the timelike form factors. The role of two-photon exchange amplitudes can be tested using the charge asymmetry of the $e^+ e^- \to B \bar B$ processes. Precision measurements of the electron-positron annihilation cross section can test the generalized Crewther relation and determine whether the effective couplings defined from physical measurements show infrared fixed-point and near conformal behavior. I also discuss a number of tests of novel QCD phenomena accessible in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation, including near-threshold reactions, the production of baryonium, gluonium states, and pentaquarks.

The covariant structure of light-front wave functions and the behavior of hadronic form factors

We study the analytic structure of light-front wave functions (LFWFs) and its consequences for hadron form factors using an explicitly Lorentz-invariant formulation of the front form. The normal to the light front is specified by a general null vector $ω^μ.$ The LFWFs with definite total angular momentum are eigenstates of a {\it kinematic} angular momentum operator and satisfy all Lorentz symmetries. They are analytic functions of the invariant mass squared of the constituents $M^2_0= (\sum k^μ)^2$ and the light-cone momentum fractions $x_i= {k_i\cd ω/ p \cd ω}$ multiplied by invariants constructed from the spin matrices, polarization vectors, and $ω^μ.$ These properties are illustrated using known nonperturbative eigensolutions of the Wick--Cutkosky model. We analyze the LFWFs introduced by Chung and Coester to describe static and low momentum properties of the nucleons. They correspond to the spin-locking of a quark with the spin of its parent nucleon, together with a positive-energy projection constraint. These extra constraints lead to anomalous dependence of form factors on $Q$ rather than $Q^2.$ In contrast, the dependence of LFWFs on $M^2_0$ implies that hadron form factors are analytic functions of $Q^2$ in agreement with dispersion theory and perturbative QCD. We show that a model incorporating the leading-twist perturbative QCD prediction is consistent with recent data for the ratio of proton Pauli and Dirac form factors.

Light-Front Quantization and QCD Phenomena

The light-front quantization of QCD provides an alternative to lattice gauge theory for computing the mass spectrum, scattering amplitudes, and other physical properties of hadrons directly in Minkowski space. Nonperturbative light-front methods for solving gauge theory and obtaining light-front wavefunctions, such as discretized light-front quantization, the transverse lattice, and light-front resolvents are reviewed. The resulting light-front wavefunctions give a frame-independent interpolation between hadrons and their quark and gluon degrees of freedom, including an exact representation of spacelike form factors, transition form factors such as $B \to \ell \bar νπ,$ and generalized parton distributions. In the case of hard inclusive reactions, the effects of final-state interactions must be included in order to interpret leading-twist diffractive contributions, nuclear shadowing, and single-spin asymmetries. I also discuss how the AdS/CFT correspondence between string theory and conformal gauge theory can be used to constrain the form and power-law fall-off of the light-front wavefunctions. In the case of electroweak theory, light-front quantization leads to a unitary and renormalizable theory of massive gauge particles, automatically incorporating the Lorentz and 't Hooft conditions as well as the Goldstone boson equivalence theorem. Spontaneous symmetry breaking is represented by the appearance of zero modes of the Higgs field, leaving the light-front vacuum equal to the perturbative vacuum.

New Perspectives for QCD: The Novel Effects of Final-State Interactions and Near-Conformal Effective Couplings

The effective QCD charge extracted from $τ$ decay is remarkably constant at small momenta, implying the near-conformal behavior of hadronic interactions at small momentum transfer. The correspondence of large-$N_C$ supergravity theory in higher-dimensional anti-de Sitter spaces with gauge theory in physical space-time also has interesting implications for hadron phenomenology in the conformal limit, such as constituent counting rules for hard exclusive processes. The utility of light-front quantization and light-front Fock wavefunctions for analyzing such phenomena and representing the dynamics of QCD bound states is reviewed. I also discuss the novel effects of initial- and final-state interactions in hard QCD inclusive processes, including Bjorken scaling single-spin asymmetries and the leading-twist diffractive and shadowing contributions to deep inelastic lepton-proton scattering.

Single-Spin Polarization Effects and the Determination of Timelike Proton Form Factors

We show that measurements of the proton's polarization in electron-positron annihilation to a proton-antiproton pair $e^+ e^- \to p \bar p$ strongly discriminate between the analytic forms of models which fit the proton form factors in the spacelike region. In particular, the single-spin asymmetry normal to the scattering plane measures the relative phase difference between the timelike $G_E$ and $G_M$ form factors. The expected proton polarization in the timelike region is large, of order of several tens of percent.

Hard probes in heavy ion collisions at the LHC: PDFs, shadowing and $pA$ collisions

This manuscript is the outcome of the subgroup ``PDFs, shadowing and $pA$ collisions'' from the CERN workshop ``Hard Probes in Heavy Ion Collisions at the LHC''. In addition to the experimental parameters for $pA$ collisions at the LHC, the issues discussed are factorization in nuclear collisions, nuclear parton distributions (nPDFs), hard probes as the benchmark tests of factorization in $pA$ collisions at the LHC, and semi-hard probes as observables with potentially large nuclear effects. Also, novel QCD phenomena in $pA$ collisions at the LHC are considered. The importance of the $pA$ program at the LHC is emphasized.

Hard Photodisintegration of a Proton Pair in 3He

Hard photodisintegration of the deuteron has been extensively studied in order to understand the dynamics of the transition from hadronic to quark-gluon descriptions of the strong interaction. In this work, we discuss the extension of this program to hard photodisintegration of a $pp$ pair in the $^3$He nucleus. Experimental confirmation of new features predicted here for the suggested reaction would advance our understanding of hard nuclear reactions. A main prediction, in contrast with low-energy observations, is that the $pp$ breakup cross section is not much smaller than the one for $pn$ break up.In some models, the energy-dependent oscillations observed for $pp$ scattering are predicted to appear in the $γ^3{\rm He} \to p p + n$ reaction. Such an observation would open up a completely new field in studies of color coherence phenomena in hard nuclear reactions. We also demonstrate that, in addition to the energy dependence, the measurement of the light-cone momentum distribution of the recoil neutron provides an independent test of the underlying dynamics of hard disintegration.

Light-Front Quantization of Gauge Theories

Light-front wavefunctions provide a frame-independent representation of hadrons in terms of their physical quark and gluon degrees of freedom. The light-front Hamiltonian formalism provides new nonperturbative methods for obtaining the QCD spectrum and eigensolutions, including resolvant methods, variational techniques, and discretized light-front quantization. A new method for quantizing gauge theories in light-cone gauge using Dirac brackets to implement constraints is presented. In the case of the electroweak theory, this method of light-front quantization leads to a unitary and renormalizable theory of massive gauge particles, automatically incorporating the Lorentz and 't Hooft conditions as well as the Goldstone boson equivalence theorem. Spontaneous symmetry breaking is represented by the appearance of zero modes of the Higgs field leaving the light-front vacuum equal to the perturbative vacuum. I also discuss an "event amplitude generator" for automatically computing renormalized amplitudes in perturbation theory. The importance of final-state interactions for the interpretation of diffraction, shadowing, and single-spin asymmetries in inclusive reactions such as deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering is emphasized

The mass renormalization of nonperturbative light-front Hamiltonian theory: An illustration using truncated, Pauli-Villars-regulated Yukawa interactions

We obtain analytic, nonperturbative, approximate solutions of Yukawa theory in the one-fermion sector using light-front quantization. The theory is regulated in the ultraviolet by the introduction of heavy Pauli-Villars scalar and fermion fields, each with negative norm. In order to obtain a directly soluble problem, fermion-pair creation and annihilation are neglected, and the number of bosonic constituents is limited to one of either type. We discuss some of the features of the wave function of the eigensolution, including its endpoint behavior and spin and orbital angular momentum content. The limit of infinite Pauli-Villars mass receives special scrutiny.

High-Energy QCD Asymptotics of Photon-Photon Collisions

The high-energy behaviour of the total cross section for highly virtual photons, as predicted by the BFKL equation at next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD, is discussed. The NLO BFKL predictions, improved by the BLM optimal scale setting, are in good agreement with recent OPAL and L3 data at CERN LEP2. NLO BFKL predictions for future linear colliders are presented.

Evading the CKM Hierarchy: Intrinsic Charm in B Decays

We show that the presence of intrinsic charm in the hadrons' light-cone wave functions, even at a few percent level, provides new, competitive decay mechanisms for B decays which are nominally CKM-suppressed. For example, the weak decays of the B-meson to two-body exclusive states consisting of strange plus light hadrons, such as B\toπK, are expected to be dominated by penguin contributions since the tree-level b\to s u\bar u decay is CKM suppressed. However, higher Fock states in the B wave function containing charm quark pairs can mediate the decay via a CKM-favored b\to s c\bar c tree-level transition. Such intrinsic charm contributions can be phenomenologically significant. Since they mimic the amplitude structure of ``charming'' penguin contributions, charming penguins need not be penguins at all.

Perspectives and Challenges for QCD Phenomenology

A fundamental understanding of quantum chromodynamics, particularly at the amplitude level, is essential for progress in high energy physics. For example, the measurement and interpretation of the basic parameters of the electroweak theory and CP violation depends on an understanding of the dynamics and phase structure of exclusive B-meson decay amplitudes. In this review, I discuss a number of ways in which the required hadron wavefunctions can be measured (such as two-photon reactions and diffractive dissociation) or calculated from first principles. An important tool for describing relativistic composite systems in quantum field theory is the light-front Fock expansion, which encodes the properties of a hadrons in terms of a set of frame-independent n-particle wavefunctions. Evolution in light-cone time allows the construction of an "event amplitude generator" in which only non-ghost physical degrees of freedom and integration over physical phase appear. The diffractive dissociation of a hadron at high energies, by either Coulomb or Pomeron exchange, has a natural description in QCD as the materialization of the projectile's light-cone wavefunctions; in particular, the diffractive dissociation of a meson, baryon, or photon into high transverse momentum jets measures the shape and other features of the projectile's distribution amplitude. I also review recent work which shows that the structure functions measured in deep inelastic lepton scattering are affected by final-state rescattering, thus modifying their connection with the light-cone probability distributions. In particular, the shadowing of nuclear structure functions is due to destructive interference effects from leading-twist diffraction of the virtual photon, physics not included in the nuclear light-cone wavefunctions.

Exact solutions to Pauli-Villars-regulated field theories

We present a new class of quantum field theories which are exactly solvable. The theories are generated by introducing Pauli-Villars fermionic and bosonic fields with masses degenerate with the physical positive metric fields. An algorithm is given to compute the spectrum and corresponding eigensolutions. We also give the operator solution for a particular case and use it to illustrate some of the tenets of light-cone quantization. Since the solutions of the solvable theory contain ghost quanta, these theories are unphysical. However, we also discuss how perturbation theory in the difference between the masses of the physical and Pauli-Villars particles could be developed, thus generating physical theories. The existence of explicit solutions of the solvable theory also allows one to study the relationship between the equal-time and light-cone vacua and eigensolutions.

Application of Pauli-Villars regularization and discretized light-cone quantization to a single-fermion truncation of Yukawa theory

We apply Pauli-Villars regularization and discretized light-cone quantization to the nonperturbative solution of (3+1)-dimensional Yukawa theory in a single-fermion truncation. Three heavy scalars, including two with negative norm, are used to regulate the theory. The matrix eigenvalue problem is solved for the lowest-mass state with use of a new, indefinite-metric Lanczos algorithm. Various observables are extracted from the wave functions, including average multiplicities and average momenta of constituents, structure functions, and a form factor slope.

Perturbative QCD and factorization of coherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron

We analyze the predictions of perturbative QCD for pion photoproduction on the deuteron, gamma D -> pi^0 D, at large momentum transfer using the reduced amplitude formalism. The cluster decomposition of the deuteron wave function at small binding only allows the nuclear coherent process to proceed if each nucleon absorbs an equal fraction of the overall momentum transfer. Furthermore, each nucleon must scatter while remaining close to its mass shell. Thus the nuclear photoproduction amplitude, M_{gamma D -> pi^0 D}(u,t), factorizes as a product of three factors: (1) the nucleon photoproduction amplitude, M_{gamma N_1 -> pi^0 N_1}(u/4,t/4), at half of the overall momentum transfer, (2) a nucleon form factor, F_{N_2}(t/4), at half the overall momentum transfer, and (3) the reduced deuteron form factor, f_d(t), which according to perturbative QCD, has the same monopole falloff as a meson form factor. A comparison with the recent JLAB data for gamma D -> pi^0 D of Meekins et al. [Phys. Rev. C 60, 052201 (1999)] and the available gamma p -> pi^0 p data shows good agreement between the perturbative QCD prediction and experiment over a large range of momentum transfers and center of mass angles. The reduced amplitude prediction is consistent with the constituent counting rule, p^11_T M_{gamma D -> pi^0 D} -> F(theta_cm), at large momentum transfer. This is found to be consistent with measurements for photon lab energies E_gamma > 3 GeV at theta_cm=90 degrees and $\elab > 10$ GeV at 136 degrees.

Two-Photon Processes at Intermediate Energies

Exclusive hadron production processes in photon-photon collisions provide important tests of QCD at the amplitude level, particularly as measures of hadron distribution amplitudes and skewed parton distributions. The determination of the shape and normalization of the distribution amplitudes has become particularly important in view of their importance in the analysis of exclusive semi-leptonic and two-body hadronic B-decays. Interesting two-photon physics, including doubly-tagged $γ^* γ^*$ reactions, will be accessible at low energy, high luminosity $e^+ e^-$ colliders, including measurements of channels important in the light-by-light contribution to the muon $g$--2 and the study of the transition between threshold production controlled by low-energy effective chiral theories and the domain where leading-twist perturbative QCD becomes applicable. The threshold regime of hadron production in photon-photon and $e^+ e^-$ annihilation, where hadrons are formed at small relative velocity, is particularly interesting as a test of low energy theorems, soliton models, and new types of resonance production. Such studies will be particularly valuable in double-tagged reactions where polarization correlations, as well as the photon virtuality dependence, can be studied.
