Light-Cone Quantized QCD and Novel Hadron Phenomenology

I review progress made in solving gauge theories such as collinear quantum chromodynamics using light-cone Hamiltonian methods. I also show how the light-cone Fock expansion for hadron wavefunctions can be used to compute operator matrix elements such as decay amplitudes, form factors, distribution amplitudes, and structure functions, and how it provides a tool for exploring novel features of QCD. I also review commensurate scale relations, leading-twist identities which relate physical observables to each other, thus eliminating renormalization scale and scheme ambiguities in perturbative QCD predictions.

Exclusive Photon-Photon Processes

Exclusive $γγ\to$ hadron pairs are among the most fundamental processes in QCD, providing a detailed examination of Compton scattering in the crossed channel. In the high momentum transfer domain $(s,t, {large},θ_{cm}$ for $t/s$ fixed), these processes can be computed from first principles in QCD, yielding important information on the nature of the QCD coupling $α_s$ and the form of hadron distribution amplitudes. Similarly, the transition form factors $γ^*γ$, $γ^*γ\to π^0, η^0,η^\prime,η_c ...$ provide rigorous tests of QCD and definitive determinations of the meson distribution amplitudes $ϕ_H(x,Q)$. We show that the assumption of a frozen coupling at low momentum transfers can explain the observed scaling of two-photon exclusive processes.

The Spin and Flavor Content of Intrinsic Sea Quarks

The intrinsic quark-antiquark pairs generated by the minimal energy nonperturbative meson-baryon fluctuations in the nucleon sea provide a consistent framework for understanding a number of empirical anomalies observed in the deep inelastic quark-parton structure of nucleons: the flavor asymmetry of the nucleon sea implied by the violation of Gottfried sum rule, the proton spin problem implied by the violation of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule, and the outstanding conflict between two different determinations of the strange quark sea in the nucleon.

Is J/psi-Nucleon Scattering Dominated by the Gluonic van der Waals Interaction?

The gluon-exchange contribution to $J/ψ$-nucleon scattering is shown to yield a sizeable scattering length of about -0.25 fm, which is consistent with the sparse available data. Hadronic corrections to gluon exchange which are generated by $ρπ$ and $D\bar D$ intermediate states of the $J/ψ$ are shown to be negligible. We also propose a new method to study $J/ψ$-nucleon elastic scattering in the reaction $π^+ d\to J/ψp p$.

Light-Cone Wavefunctions at Small $x$

There exist an infinite number of exact small momentum fraction-$x$ boundary conditions on light-cone wavefunctions of bound states in gauge theory. They are necessary for finite expectation values of the invariant mass operator and relate components of the wavefunction from different Fock sectors. We illustrate their consequences by analyzing the small-$x$ quark Regge behavior of a heavy large-$N$ meson, finding power-law rise of unpolarized distributions. The polarized distribution changes sign and then vanishes with minus the unpolarized Regge intercept.

Looking for Exotic Multiquark States in Nonleptonic B Decays

Recent data on inclusive B decays into charmonium states taken by the CLEO collaboration suggest that a sizeable fraction of the nonleptonic decays may consist of the $J/ψΛ\overline p$ three body final state, corresponding to a distinct enhancement in the inclusive $J/ψ$ momentum distribution. The kinematical boundary of this structure corresponds to the case where the $J/ψ$ recoils nearly monoenergetically in the B rest system against a partner having mass of $\simeq$ 2 GeV. This may allow the observation of a $Λ-\overline p $ bound state near or just below threshold; i.e., strange baryonium, even if the production rate is small. Using a phase space approach to the B meson decay, we study the $J/ψ$ momentum distribution and the effect of baryonium formation. We also discuss the possible observation of pentaquarks and hadronically-bound $J/ψ$ by the observation of monoenergetic baryons in these decays.

Asymmetric Quark/Antiquark Hadronization in e+e- Annihilation

We point out that the fragmentation of a strange quark into nucleons versus antinucleons is not necessarily identical $D_{p/s}(z,Q^2) \neq D_{\bar p/s}(z,Q^2)$, even though the perturbative contributions from gluon splitting and evolution are $p \leftrightarrow \bar p$ symmetric. The observation of such asymmetries in the hadronization of strange and other heavy quarks can provide insight into the nonperturbative mechanisms underlying jet fragmentation in QCD.

Novel QCD Effects in the Production and Decay of Quarkonium

There are many outstanding discrepancies comparing the predictions of perturbative QCD and measurements of the rate of production and decay of heavy quark systems. The problems include the $J/ψ\to ρπ$ puzzle, leading charmed particle effects, the anomalous behavior of the heavy quark sea components of structure functions, anomalous nuclear target effects, and the large rates observed for single and double quarkonium production at large $x_F$ and large $p_T$. I argue that these anomalies may be associated with nonperturbative effects in the higher Fock structure of hadron wavefunctions.

The Drell-Yan Process and Factorization in Impact Parameter Space

The cross section for Drell-Yan pair production in the limit of small $x$-target is derived in the rest frame of the target hadron. Our calculation is based on the fundamental quantity $σ(ρ)$, the cross section for the scattering of a $q\bar{q}$-pair with fixed transverse separation $ρ$ off a hadronic target. As in deep inelastic scattering the result can be given in terms of integrals of $σ(ρ)$. This is consistent with well known factorization theorems and also relates higher-twist terms in both processes. An analysis of the angular distribution of the produced lepton shows that additional integrals of $σ(ρ)$ can be obtained in the Drell-Yan process, which are not measurable in inclusive deep inelastic scattering.

Nonperturbative Renormalization of QED in Light-Cone Quantization

As a precursor to work on QCD, we study the dressed electron in QED nonperturbatively. The calculational scheme uses an invariant mass cutoff, discretized light-cone quantization, a Tamm--Dancoff truncation of the Fock space, and a small photon mass. Nonperturbative renormalization of the coupling and electron mass is developed.

Light-Cone Quantization and Hadron Structure

In this talk, I review the use of the light-cone Fock expansion as a tractable and consistent description of relativistic many-body systems and bound states in quantum field theory and as a frame-independent representation of the physics of the QCD parton model. Nonperturbative methods for computing the spectrum and LC wavefunctions are briefly discussed. The light-cone Fock state representation of hadrons also describes quantum fluctuations containing intrinsic gluons, strangeness, and charm, and, in the case of nuclei, "hidden color". Fock state components of hadrons with small transverse size, such as those which dominate hard exclusive reactions, have small color dipole moments and thus diminished hadronic interactions; i.e., "color transparency". The use of light-cone Fock methods to compute loop amplitudes is illustrated by the example of the electron anomalous moment in QED. In other applications, such as the computation of the axial, magnetic, and quadrupole moments of light nuclei, the QCD relativistic Fock state description provides new insights which go well beyond the usual assumptions of traditional hadronic and nuclear physics.

The Quark/Antiquark Asymmetry of the Nucleon Sea

Although the distributions of sea quarks and antiquarks generated by leading-twist QCD evolution through gluon splitting $g \rightarrow \bar q q$ are necessarily CP symmetric, the distributions of nonvalence quarks and antiquarks which are intrinsic to the nucleon's bound state wavefunction need not be identical. In this paper we investigate the sea quark/antiquark asymmetries in the nucleon wavefunction which are generated by a light-cone model of energetically-favored meson-baryon fluctuations. The model predicts striking quark/antiquark asymmetries in the momentum and helicity distributions for the down and strange contributions to the proton structure function: the intrinsic $d$ and $s$ quarks in the proton sea are predicted to be negatively polarized, whereas the intrinsic $\bar d$ and $\bar s$ antiquarks give zero contributions to the proton spin. Such a picture is supported by experimental phenomena related to the proton spin problem and the violation of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule. The light-cone meson-baryon fluctuation model also suggests a structured momentum distribution asymmetry for strange quarks and antiquarks which could be relevant to an outstanding conflict between two different determinations of the strange quark sea in the nucleon. The model predicts an excess of intrinsic $d \bar d$ pairs over $u \bar u$ pairs, as supported by the Gottfried sum rule violation. We also predict that the intrinsic charm and anticharm helicity and momentum distributions are not identical.

The Generalized Crewther Relation in QCD and its Experimental Consequences

We use the BLM scale-fixing prescription to derive a renormalization-scheme invariant relation between the coefficient function for the Bjorken sum rule for polarized deep inelastic scattering and the $R$-ratio for the $e^+e^-$ annihilation cross section. This relation provides a generalization of the Crewther relation to non-conformally invariant gauge theories. The derived relations allow one to calculate unambiguously without renormalization scale or scheme ambiguity the effective charges of the polarized Bjorken and the Gross-Llewellen Smith sum rules from the experimental value for the effective charge associated with $R$-ratio. Present data are consistent with the generalized Crewther relations, but measurements at higher precision and energies will be needed to decisively test these fundamental relations in QCD.

Charmed Hadron Asymmetries in the Intrinsic Charm Coalescence Model

Fermilab experiment E791, measuring charmed hadron production in $π^- A$ interactions at 500 GeV with high statistics, has observed a strong asymmetry between the hadroproduction cross sections for leading $D$ mesons which contain projectile valence quarks and the nonleading charmed mesons without projectile valence quarks. Such correlations of the charge of the $D$ meson with the quantum numbers of the beam hadron explicitly contradict the factorization theorem in perturbative QCD which predicts that heavy quarks hadronize through a jet fragmentation function that is independent of the initial state. The E791 experiment also measures $Λ_c/ \bar Λ_c$ and $D_s/\bar{D_s}$ production asymmetries as well as asymmetries in $D \bar D$ pair production. We examine these asymmetries and the fractional longitudinal momentum, $x_F$, distributions for single and pairs of charmed hadrons within a two-component model combining leading-twist $g g$ and $q \bar q$ fusion subprocesses with charm production from intrinsic heavy quark Fock states. A key feature of this analysis is intrinsic charm coalescence, the process by which a charmed quark in the projectile's Fock state wavefunction forms charmed hadrons by combining with valence quarks of similar rapidities.

Light-Cone Quantization and QCD Phenomenology

In principle, quantum chromodynamics provides a fundamental description of hadronic and nuclear structure and dynamics in terms of their elementary quark and gluon degrees of freedom. In practice, the direct application of QCD to reactions involving the structure of hadrons is complex because of the interplay of nonperturbative effects such as color confinement and multi-quark coherence. A crucial tool in analyzing such phenomena is the use of relativistic light-cone quantum mechanics and Fock state methods to provide tractable and consistent treatments of relativistic many-body systems. We begin with a brief introduction to light-cone field theory, stressing how it may allow the derivation of a constituent picture, analogous to the constituent quark model. The Fock state representation includes all quantum fluctuations of the hadron wavefunction, including far off-shell configurations such as intrinsic charm and, in the case of nuclei, hidden color. The Fock state components of the hadron with small transverse size, which dominate hard exclusive reactions, have small color dipole moments. Thus QCD predicts minimal absorptive corrections, i.e., color transparency for quasi-elastic exclusive reactions in nuclear targets at large momentum transfer. In other applications, such as the calculation of the axial, magnetic, and quadrupole moments of light nuclei, the QCD Fock state description provides new insights which go well beyond traditional hadronic and nuclear physics.

Angular Distributions of Massive Quarks and Leptons Close to Threshold

Predictions for the angular distribution of massive quarks and leptons are presented, including QCD and QED corrections. Recent results for the fermionic part of the two-loop corrections to the electromagnetic form factors are combined with the BLM scale fixing prescription. Two distinctly different scales arise as arguments of $α_s(μ^2)$ near threshold: the relative momentum of the quarks governing the soft gluon exchange responsible for the Coulomb potential, and a large momentum scale approximately equal to twice the quark mass for the corrections induced by transverse gluons. Numerical predictions for charmed, bottom, and top quarks are given. One obtains a direct determination of $α_V(Q^2)$, the coupling in the heavy quark potential, which can be compared with lattice gauge theory predictions. The corresponding QED results for $τ$ pair production allow for a measurement of the magnetic moment of the $τ$ and could be tested at a future $τ$-charm factory.

Intrinsic Charm Contribution to Double Quarkonium Hadroproduction

Double $J/ψ$ production has been observed by the NA3 collaboration in $πN$ and $p N$ collisions with a cross section of the order of 20-30 pb. The $ψψ$ pairs measured in $π^- $ nucleus interactions at 150 and 280 GeV$/c$ are observed to carry an anomalously large fraction of the projectile momentum in the laboratory frame, $x_{ψψ} \geq 0.6$ at 150 GeV$/c$ and $\geq 0.4$ at 280 GeV$/c$. We postulate that these forward $ψψ$ pairs are created by the materialization of Fock states in the projectile containing two pairs of intrinsic $c \overline c$ quarks. We calculate the overlap of the charmonium states with the $|\overline u d c \overline c c \overline c \rangle$ Fock state as described by the intrinsic charm model and find that the $π^- N \rightarrow ψψ$ longitudinal momentum and invariant mass distributions are both well reproduced. We also discuss double $J/ψ$ production in $pN$ interactions and the implications for other heavy quarkonium production channels in QCD.
